What is not mentioned here is that 10K also includes a lot more luxury features and the Audi comes with all-wheel-drive (AWD). The GTI doesn’t have an AWD option.

While you are all here arguing about which car Is better, VW is making all the money at the end. I personally own an A3 fully packaged and I love it, but I won't bag on someone because they own a GTI. It is a very nice car as well. Get what you like, every car no matter the brand is a give or take :).

I own a GTI personally and I can honestly say, if I could afford it I would have bought the audi, but hey man... Both are great cars in my opinion, getting a tune on mine very soon and I must say, would definitely buy another Volkswagen group vehicle in the future.

@@theoferrous4330 I had a Mk7 GTI and after my lease was up I bought a certified pre owned A3 2.0T Quattro. There are times I miss my GTI, but for the most part the A3 has been the perfect upgrade from the GTI. For the price I paid the A3 it kinda slotted in below the price which I could have got even a used Golf R.

Perception is everything. The GTI is the performance version of the Golf line. Audi isn't positioning the base A3 in the performance category -- that's what the S3 is for. So perhaps the question to ask is would you pay $13k more for the S3 over the GTI. The majority of people buying the base A3s aren't pushing a car in the corners to see how much body roll is there. The S3 buyer is certainly shopping with suspension tuning in mind, and the price for the extra kit reflects that.

Audi doesn't have anything compete with the GTI from within its own division. So a normal upper level non GTI Golf would be more appropriate here. Pretty sure that is over (or around) a 10k difference then. Like Khalid stated "that's where the Golf R comes in...." against the S3.

Drove both do not understand you at all. Hands down the Mk7 is quicker in all aspects lighter, faster, more tunable, better suspension, brakes, etc. Interior of a Mk7 is near Audi finish and tbh the performance superiority is what does it for me. You'd be a fool to get a 10k heavier slower crappier car all for a badge and different looking interior
@LazerBagel45
@LazerBagel45 6 жыл бұрын
The GTI is not more tunable, it has the same engine and transmission. And as far as straight line speed (both w/ stage 1 tune) the Audi would out accelerate from 0-60 because of the AWD and would be very similar in higher speed pulls. I agree with you elsewhere about handling and value though.

I missed the part where you compared the A3 to the GTI, all i saw there as a nice Golf. I drove both and was quated the same lease payments for both a Base A3 with the 2.0 and a GTI SE. I piked the GTI. for the same money you get a really fun car with tons of features. If you want to add anything to the A3 you will feel it in your pocket. Also the A3 feels a lot more cramped inside. I'm a big guy and the center console on the A3 kept rubbing against my leg. The GTI feels roomier and more open.

Interesting comparison, surprised to see there aren't more like it out there. Both offer compelling reasons to buy, the gti offers solid all-around practicality in a similar package. The audi puts on a tuxedo and offers a much more luxurious ride & feel associated with their brand (what's described as body roll really should be translated to luxury dampened ride a la bmw 7 series status but with a tighter wheelbase for maneuvering) Personally, I drove away in a 2015 audi a3 quattro 2.0t premium msrp 36,500+ for a little over 30k. Here's where it hits the value proposition, a full loaded mk7 gti retails for an inconsequential couple thousand less but suffers from fwd syndrome. Had an mk6 so I understand the shortcomings, while the a3 quattro brings to the table a great 4wd system and s-tronic (I know both dsg are double clutch similar transmission yada yada yada, but having driven all versions including porsche pdk, I will say there is a noticeable difference to the keen automotive enthusiast and the s-tronic lands just that much closer to lightning porsche pdk than the dsg end of the spectrum. I'll leave it at that) The a3 fits in nicely between the gti and the golf r which is a little harder to digest at nearly 40k. It is a great car, but that puts it practically right next door to the s3 which is a small bump up but didn't want to play in that car range. And we're back to the a3 that I got @ 2,500 under invoice, which when compared to a loaded fwd gti was pretty much a no brainner for this guy. Throw in a stage 1 tune, the a3 quattro puts it all to the ground with nearly 300 whp n spools up quicker than an s3 while costing much less. To reach these personal goals, it seemed to split the difference nicely between the gti and r. Gti doesn't offer awd and I suspect that if it did, it would make quite the killer combination. I didn't touch on interiors, as both are nice & comparable, for those that it matters to the audi feels like the petite audi and not the cheap audi. This is something other luxury brands struggle to reach as they make too many sacrifices in trying to be too much for what they are *cough* 320i & cla250 *cough*

Hi Matthew, my name is Gabriel. Sounds like you know your stuff and I need your opinion. I currently drive a Golf R 2013, love it. However, my lease is up in 7 months and I am at the point where I need to start thinking about trading it in. Audi has a lease special on the A3, $305 monthly. Gives me the AWD that I love but that I can't afford on a new 2015/16 Golf R which, on a lease, is still 600 bucks a month, way out of my budget. I test drove a manual GTI today, loved it, hate the FWD but loved everything else about it. I did not love or nor hate the interior of the Audi, but I fell in love with the AWD and its acceleration. I know tuned will boost me to 300 some HP on both cars which I feel the Audi A3 will handle better. GTI seems like it is hard to get a decent lease deal right now. I got lucky and got a 2013 Golf R with only paying 427 a month. In the long run, does Audi A3 2.0t hold its value more than a VW GTI?
@schmize5696
@schmize5696 9 жыл бұрын
smileygabe22 Hey Gabriel, I'd be glad to share some insight. This response may lead to more questions than answers, but it should at least get you started in the right direction. With only 7 months left on your lease, it could be a good idea to check the value both on trading-in or selling privately for higher than lease buyout. That model year Golf R's seem to hold value well so it's possible you might be able to pull equity out of it in switching into a new car! Moving forward, this is strong negotiating leverage when handling dealers. On your next vehicle, do you plan finance or lease? If you plan on buying, are you considering used cars also? There's a lot to said for having a manual transmission; an automatic is definitely not a perfect substitute. However, I did find the Audi S-Tronic to be the best of the bunch (read as dsg, pdk, etc.). If you're going to switch from a manual, I'd definitely recommend a dual-clutch transmission as it gives similar control to the manual but with the enhanced precision of perfect shifts every time! This is the one of the main reasons when choosing the A3, I found conventional 8-speed automatics to be much less desirable. So where does that leave you? When negotiating with dealers, they present a huge range of figures that can make it difficult to decide what's in your price range. If you are considering a lease, and it sounds like you are, then I wouldn't get caught too much in which car will hold the value better over 3 years. Other than calculating lease terms, the residual value at the end is practically a moot point. It's important to negotiate all the terms of a lease separately to ensure they're not pulling a fast one on you. They like to decide monthly and make the numbers fit, but it should be the other way around. Some cars have higher residuals than others, and it should be pretty easy to get those numbers online. It's important to negotiate the sale price of the new vehicle as well. The difference of these two prices will be the amount of the lease and that is the figure that matters. Despite msrp, it is possible to get a more expensive vehicle leased at a lower price than a cheaper car might be. Case in point, I secured a 2 year lease for a client that was @ 10kmiles/year on a new fully loaded 2015 Lexus RC-350 for a total of $14,500 over the term and had an msrp of $55,000 (averaged out to $604.17/month). Due to a high residual (73% at 2 years) and negotiated selling, it had a relatively low lease price for a car in that range. By contrast, that is less than I was able to get on a bare bones 2015 Ford Mustang GT with msrp of $31,000. Go figure! Right now the new Golf R's are difficult to find and are being snatched up quickly. I've read they have excellent residuals, so it should be possible to negotiate a favorable lease deal on those. The A3 and GTI are very different cars in terms of their cargo potential and capacity abilities. If you are in love with a hatch, you might find it difficult to transition into a smaller compact sedan. I fold the rear seats down for my 2 dogs, but it's not nearly as easy as the hatch was. I'm interested to see what kind of deals are available when the new Focus RS hits dealers. If you are considering financing, I would highly recommend looking into the pre-owned market. There should be some used MK7's around now with low miles that should lessen the depreciation hit. Sometimes when dealers and manufacturers list special lease prices they don't include taxes and all the fees so they'll raise the price. That is why it's important to negotiate and look at all the terms. This response may not have the exact answers, but it asks the right questions to get you on track! I just started selling Audis, and I have sold mostly A3s. The A3 is a better value than the CLA and the 2 series when you add options and the transmission is great. I think the MQB really allows Audi to make this a real luxury car unlike the Acura ILX (which I used to sell). And the 2.0 Quattro version is excellent.

Love your reviews because they are so refreshingly different, and interesting. And the explanation of platform sharing is good to a point, and i noticed you highlighted the [remote?] potential for a bad broadside if there was a problem. However I'd proffer if one platform is spread across numerous vehicles, for the obvious economies of scale, there is also the potential for further investment and improvement through engineering etc when it's only one platform. I certainly know about the options game, and all carmakers indulge, to screw another big handful of dollars from you, [with the possible exception of Lexus, when the LS400 came out there were NO options, everything was included, and it was simply what colour would you like], and the more expensive the car the worse it gets. BMW are absolute masters at it, and it begs the question "this is a premium [priced] car, half this stuff be on the car anyway shouldnt it?!" It was fine for the young guy from Wikipedia?? to simplistically blur the lines between two brands from one car maker, but there are many many sematics come into play in a new car choice. Joe Blow probably doesnt understand what platform sharing means, and is even less interested. And while it was fine to theoretically option up the A3, it was not fair to them say how many cars you could buy also buy for $39,000, and you omitted to mention if said alternative cars were similarly equipped. I've been seriously considering a new S1, $50 grand in my part of the world, available as a 4 door, and yet you cant get two adults in the rear. That car, with a few choice options could be nearer to $60,000 at which time you'd have to ask if it was worth $20,000 more than a GTI, with room in the back.

This is a very valid argument that many people have discussed, but that A3 clearly is not the Prestige trim level. A fully loaded Prestige trim level A3 is much more expensive than a GTI at nearly $50,000 even though they are basically the same thing. However, for me, I would get a loaded Mustang EcoBoost for $37,000.

I like all the extra bells and whistles like lane change assist but they are not something I want to spend extra money on. I'm shopping these two cars right now and the A3 2.0 feels, sounds and smells exactly the same as the GTI SE. The customizable powertrain settings are exactly the same. I like the hatchback, I wish the A3 wagon were already available. I'm going with the GTI because it's more practical without giving up any driving fun and feel. If money were no option I would be in the Golf R until the S3 wagon arrived.

So I’m just watching this because I’m looking for AWD because I’m too far north and winters are horrible. I like my GTI but wish it was AWD. Looking at it now, the used prices are nearly identical. I wish I had the hatch for the few times I’d have to use it, but I’d take the function of the AWD in Minnesota all day long. When I bought the GTI, it was because I wanted a standard transmission - well manual since I’m not sure how standard that is anymore. In hindsight I should’ve went with the A3 as the GTI has too much power to the front wheels, even with snow tires.

I know this is a couple of years old, but in Canada, a loaded A3 Quattro is about $7k more than the Golf. Beyond the fact that its a Quattro, you also get real leather seats, thigh Cushion, Sport suspension, plus the really sweet virtual cockpit which is a real game changer. The quattro on its own is easily worth the extra $7k, but once you add everything else, its a no brainer if you can afford the extra $$$'s. I don't see the negative in sharing the platform, as it brings the price down, and creates a lot of efficiency for the automaker. Its a proven platform, and as you can see from the video, two very different vehicles.

If I could've gotten a Golf with adaptive cruise control, pre-collision avoidance, active lane keeping assist, 4G LTE connectivity, Google Earth navigation, and an upgradeable infotainment computer, then I would've gotten a Golf. But I can't. No one can. So I dropped an extra $10k on an Audi A3 with all of the above. Worth it. Especially since I managed to get free car washes, oil changes, and tire rotations for three years. Don't think a VW dealer would've given me that.

Personally I chose to get the GTI S trim 4 door. Cheapest of the 4 doors GTIs, cost me 27.5k and I couldn't be happier with the car. I don't need folding gps, aluminum whatever trim, cold weather packages, etc. The car runs great, is very responsive, I didn't have to pay for the paint, and does everything performance wise, if not more, than that 38k audi. Unless you live somewhere where it snows heavily more than 6-7 times a year and the roads don't get cleaned relatively fast, you don't need all wheel drive. Don't get me wrong, I think that the Audi is a great car as well, I'm just not sure on that price tag.

It's not a bad comparison, except the part at the end about "there's a lot of cars to buy for this price" - no, there are not. "Low-spec" BMW and Lexus AWD sedans begin at much higher price for BARE models compared to "bare" A3 2.0T. Try to add leather seats for "low-spec" 328i xDrive, see the resulting price. Same goes for Lexus and Mercedes' smallest sedans. Actually, it's even worse with MB's CLA - in order to add Mercedes' own navigation system (not a Garmin's version) and rearview camera you will AUTOMATICALLY raise the CLA's price to $37k, this is not counting 4matic AWD system which adds extra $2k. Current MSRP price for A3 2.0T with Quattro AWD, leather interior, sunroof, rear-view camera with parking sensors and Audi's own navigation system is $36,750. You do the math.

Donny Rino Good question . . . However, this was interesting because it is a very different approach to building cars than the standard platform sharing of Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura or many others. In those case, there is one entire platform that is common . . . leaving major components and design very similar like the green house. MQB is unique because there are modular pieces like sub assemblies or other hard points but from there each brand is given more freedom in this approach to control big differences like where the firewall is or the C pillar thus giving individual derivations a unique design and resulting personality.

After sitting in the GTi and the A3, I could see where the extra money between them went. A3 nicer and more comfortable interior and a better place to spend time in. I've seen some promos for the A3 that makes the price diff only about $5k Omer the GTi which to me I'd pay if I'm buying or leasing

Yes the engine and transmission are the same. If that was the only thing that mattered, then there would be no such thing as trim levels or options. Plus the A3 has awd, which is important to some people.

37k? You are really squeezing me on this one M! - An ATS starts from 33k , but gotta get that Magnetic Ride Control ... So we are talking 42k minimum (Premium 2.0 without any options) ... Unless we are talking a used 3.6 ;) - A Challenger 392 scat pack is 39k and that Shaker is a must ... But then we are talking +40k - So that leaves me with a Chrysler 300C (Not because it looks like a Phantom ;) ... The messed up part is the Ghost II does look like a 300 but I digress) for 36k & then I'll swap the grille for the new 300S one ... Love the inserts on it ... Cadillac should've done that for the V cars instead of the cliché chrome mesh. Back on the MQB subject, modern & flexible platform sharing is a great way to cut redundancies, share parts, spread R&D costs on multiple models (bean counters love that) & maximize profit but at some point when enough is enough? VAG currently builds 7 cars on MQB & got 7 more coming ... Loved the interviews with the "civilians"! The Awards Show style was a nice touch M! And I agree, Audi people been hanging with Porsche people way too much. Excellent video M! Keep up the excellent work.

If your'e comparing the 1.8t FWD A3 to this golf, I do think the Audi seems a bit over priced as you can have a GTI for the same money that out performs in every way and you can spec it with leather and a sun roof. Although that being said the 2.0t Quattro model is superior. It has the luxury features, is quicker in a straight line than the GTI (AWD traction), and with just a set of coilovers would out perform it in every way. And i'm aware they can be pricey depending on how you spec them, but I bought my 2015 premium plus CPO for $20,000 even. That is half the price of a new Golf R, and with a tune its pushing better numbers than a stock Golf R/S3. In my opinion it is the MQB performance bargain.

You can get the a3 2.0t quattro for less than the GTI with no awd. I'd rather get a used audi than a vw for less or same price. Comparing 2015-16 models. The thing is the a3 has quattro. I would get the GTI if it had quattro.

I'll take the Audi. The interior quality of the Audi to me far surpasses that of VW, although VW has amazing quality as well. As a household of a VW Tiguan and an A3 I can say I'd take my A3 but not by much. However, I will say that I purchased my A3 as a certified car from the loaner program which brought the price down to a comparable point with a new GTI. Give that, I think the Audi was a no brainer!
