Stunning, in every way. Who wouldn't love Rita? Her vocal style...her trombone solos...her presentation. And this was 3 years ago!!! Just watch the faces of Joel and Joan, as well as members of the band. For that matter, watch Rita's face as she steps up for her solo. She listens...and appreciates. And there was certainly plenty to appreciate in Joel's great solo. As I've said before, no wonder Joan can't wipe the smile off his face! What a band!

What a privilege must be for these young people to play with a monster saxofonist as Joel Frahm! I really enjoyed every note of his solo, and you can see in their faces that they did it too.

Just perfect. MUSICAL! Yeah Joel! Rita feels the song both vocally and instrumentally, sings from the heart and plays from the heart. She sings the lyrics like she believes them and plays the same way. Joel is just a super star that's all I can say. The band treats this with care and sensitivity. Miles said music is 20% notes and 80% feeling, the way it's performed. Joan you have to be thrilled with what you have accomplished here. These young people have been given the chance to develop the magical gift of music that will be with them the rest of their lives and the chance to contribute and leave something of importance to the world.

"She sings the lyrics like she believes them and plays the same way" This is her consistent distinction among the great SAJB vocalists, who only occasionally manage to forget they are singers (albeit brilliant singers). It surely came from the folk/fado side of her education at home. Its like having a pact with the truth. Compare and contrast "Blame it on my youth" by Andrea and by Rita. Andrea the consummate singer and Rita the young woman hurt in love.

The huge story here is in the faces and demeanor of the kids behind Joel during his solo. Especially Alba E as she obviously finds the humor in what she's hearing. And----during Rita's vocal and trombone solos to watch Joel's total enjoyment of what he is hearing and seeing. I just now listened to Joe Williams sing this with the Ellington band and then this video. SAJB and Rita do not take a back seat here at all. The band and everyone in it look the professionals right in the eye here. Mr. C: Great teaching and inspiration for these kids. I truly can't get enough. Congrats from the state of Washington.

Wonderful Rita Payés in this immortal classic by Duke Ellington and Bob Russell (1944). So as not to repeat myself, I leave the link to another version of the same theme, from the same dates, also sung by Rita with the SAJB, but with Jon-Erik Kellso as guest trumpet. Very similar, both extraordinary, but I like this one a bit more, because Joel Frahm is in an absolutely incredible genius mode (in fact, it's the first time in my life that I hear an instrument laughing, literally: 2:29). kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZsVmZtaXttDDdpc.html And I ask myself a question, which obviously can never be answered: would Ella Fitgerald and Billie Holiday have been able to sing this song like this, as Rita does, when they were 15/16 years old? There are no recordings of them at that age, of course, but let me put it seriously in doubt ... (Listen carefully to what Rita does between 1:18 and 1:25, or between 3:42 and 3:54, as examples ... and tell me if I'm exaggerating).
@fliprim

Good call. I now think the three versions show RP's increasing mastery of the material. She takes more risks and pulls them off with this last version. Her own enjoyment is clear and connects. Her delighted smile at the end of Frahm's solo and the start of her own, signal complete ease. Kellso is a great entertainer but Frahm is an artist.

/me, too, likes the other version more, especially for Rita's relaxed stance and that freakin' muted trumpet solo! Alas, I wouldn't vote this one down. It's a different situation, leading to a significantly higher tempo: The kids play in the Holy Grail, the Palau de la Música Catalana! Rita, aged just 16, gave the tempo, probably with some adrenalin. Then she adapted her singing, played a hot&genuine solo, and found a new culmination in her vocal expression @3:45 that really explodes, compared to before (talk about adrenalin)! Joel Frahm, to me, proved in this concert to be a reliable and versatile companion to SAJB and all and any of the soloists - a phantastic collaboration! He's quite original in his solo, giving new colours to the piece. And, at the end, Rita takes three seconds of applause before walking back to her seat - that's SAJB's modesty!
