The Evolution of Specialty Geotechnical Construction Techniques: The “Great Leap” Theory
In historic literature, there is the “Great Man” theory, whereby history is reflected in the biographies of preeminent characters. In the more theoretical and academic branches of specialty geotechnical engineering, the theory holds true, with, of course, Professor Terzaghi one of the heroic great men - a researcher, problem solver, and inspiration sans pareil. In contrast, in the branch of specialty geotechnical construction, technological advances occur principally through “Great Leaps” as opposed to steady and progressive evolution.
Six criteria must be satisfied in support of awarding “Great Leap” status, beginning with a project-specific challenge of unprecedented scope or complexity, and ending with a legacy document detailing and codifying the leap. These steps are illustrated by reference to developments in drilling and grouting; cutoffs for dams; deep mixing; and micropiles, all techniques in which the author has been intimately involved throughout his professional career as a researcher, contractor, educator, and consultant.
For more than 50 years, the Karl Terzaghi Lecture has been given by
an individual honored for their exemplary contributions to the field of
geotechnical engineering.
Presented by Donald A. Bruce, Ph.D., D.GE, C.Eng., L.G., L.E.G., President, Geosystems, L.P.
Dr. Bruce has spent his career in the practice of geotechnical engineering and construction and has produced significant contributions to the profession that have helped advance our industry.
Dr. Bruce’s leadership in technologies such as Anchors, Micropiles, Grouting, Deep Mixing Methods and Diaphragm Walls has shaped the way geotechnical engineers solve practical problems.
He completed his formal education at Aberdeen University and then spent about a decade with Colcrete Ltd. rising to a seat on their Main Board.
In 1986 he joined Nicholson Construction in Pittsburgh, PA as their Technical Director. Since the late 1990s, he has maintained a technical consultancy, Geosystems, LP supporting consultants and contractors around the world.
Throughout this time, he has been actively engaged in numerous professional and trade organizations and code writing bodies; in fact, he may be one of the most prolific practitioner writers in our industry. With nearly 300 publications to his credit, he has shared his experiences throughout his career.
He has been recognized with the Martin S. Kapp Award and the Wallace Hayward Baker Award.
