UPDATE FIXED:
I have replaced both rear axles with Yukon gear pieces and installed new rear Raybestos LE rotors and pads. Taking it on a 1200 mile @75mph trip and all the vibrations are gone. I just hear tire to road noise now. I did have the driveshaft balanced and the shop noted that the marks I made were exactly where a the out of round and imbalance was coming from. Weight was added to both sides of the shaft and took care of a slight vibration 70-73 mph. That was not noticed before as the oblong axles shook the entire truck.
The factory rotors develop runout as a result of the axle being out of round.
So glad this is over...
End UPDATE:
Taking runout measurements on the driveshaft of a 2015 Chevy Silverado. This may help identify the source of a highway speed related vibration or shake. Tires have been RFB four times, so I doubt it's the tires...

I read most of the comments here and I am amazed at how manyof you are having similar problems, I have a 1995 Chevy Silverado 5.7l and it starts to shake at 45-60+ haven't driven too fast thinking something is going fly off. Today I replaced the rear shaft housing bushin and seems to help a little but still have the shake, redid the rear gears, new tires, balanced and all, new front end, new brakes all around, new u-joints, still no avail. Next I think I will try checking the fron disc brakes to see if they are sticking, maybe a new drive shaft, a new ignition module, and lastly take the transmission apart/torque coverter...ah the shake does go away when accelerating and in neutral so maybe it is not the TC. Hell I'm beating my head against the steering.

It's sad that you have to perform these tests yourself and not the dealership. GM doesn't have a very good reputation of standing behind their product after the sale.

You should be turning the shaft by turning the tires so that you aren't putting any type of pressure on the shaft in order to get a exact accurate reading. Good video.

I had same vibration from 70 mph and up on my 2017 LT Silverado DC. I replaced the junk factory tires with Hancook P tires and all my vibration has disappeared. Truck is smooth as butter all the way to 100mph. A lot of AT tires are heavier and some manufacturers seem to have issues with tires being out of round which a RFB will not ever fix!

I've got a vibration issue in my 09 Sierra crew cab. it is only noticable between 45-75 miles per hour. this only started after the trucks wheels and tires where stolen and left my truck on blocks. I've had the wheels and tires balanced 3 times. alignment done and still have vibration. could that of caused the angle of my rear differential to change​ if they put a block under it?

I have a slight shake on my 2015 GMC Sierra 4.3 double cab i have 20 in Denali wheels with bfg all terrian tires, it happens at highway speeds i dont want to spend a fortune. Im first gonna make sure tires are balanced properly and see if a little bit of higher tire pressure helps, then i just might plug in the range technology to cut off the damm AFM maybe on a flat highway it cant decide on what to keep it in 6 or 4. My truck is a base model so it doesn't tell me on the dash when it goes down to 4 the book just says that your battery meter drops?

I got a vibration on my 98 GMC K 1500 at 65 mph and above I've had multiple ppl look at it and I keep getting the runaround most of them say the front ends in excellent condition new tires and balanced multiple times in a 3 day period some say it's in the driveway line or maybe transmission motor and transmission rebuild 7 years ago I don't put very many miles on it my profile picture is my truck does anybody have a clue what this could be ??????????

My 2015 Silverado 2500HD 6.0 has a vibration. But it comes and goes. I have taken it to the dealer many times. They have replaced several parts on the truck trying to solve the problem. And it still does it. Tho mine is not nearly as bad as some, its still there. And I feel that this truck should not have any noticeable vibrations at any speed. Tires have been changed several times, balanced several times as well. Wheels have been changed, rear springs, shackles, U-bolts, several alignments. And the front suspension has been adjusted as well. Still have a vibration, and my truck seams to be dog tracking to the right.

Cliff let me know if you find the problem. Is your truck a Z71? I think I am going to replace the shocks and see if that helps. These Rancho shocks suck!

BadmunkyWRX I'm thinking it's going to be tricky to fix. I just got it out of the shop today and they say they're unable to reproduce the problem. My next step is to video and document the issue as it occurs.

I hear you man. I have done the same. And if I find the problem I will post it. As of right now I have not been able to reliably reproduce the vibration. Longest time it has gone without it was about 1,200 miles. Seems to work its self out at times. But it always comes back.

My 2014 has a steel driveshaft I had it straightened and re balanced today Huge huge difference now. Glad i dont have the aluminum one As they said they couldn't straighten it

I just test drove a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 All Terain and was surprised that there was vibration in the steering wheel during acceleration. I actually really liked the truck but now I'm hesitant to pull the trigger based on all of these vibration complaints.

I wish I had shopped around more. There is no perfect truck, but I would rather have bought something that didn't have serious design/manufacturing flaws like this model.

Burrito Boy did you figure out the issue yet? Did you take the driveshaft to a shop to get checked or balanced? I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 2x4 and have a similar issue but at around 80-90mph when getting on the gas though. Balanced and rotating my tires did help for me when cruising at 70-80mph, that vibration did went away but the issue I'm having is when hard acceleration I can feel the rear end vibrate at higher speeds 80-90mph. Also I installed a RC 2.5" leveling lift kit but I don't think a lift kit has anything to do with the leaf spring block or the leveling lift kit in front.

I bought a used 2015 Duramax, driving around in town for the test drive and loved it. Got on the highway to take it home after buying it and figured out immediately why they were selling it. Dealership says there's nothing wrong with it and it's normal. I said well in that case can't wait to drive my new Ford truck

Road force balancing is only as good as the technician that is doing the work. Road force readings MUST be 15LB and under and in the green when on the machine otherwise you will need to rotate the tire until it does come in under 15, otherwise if you do have a 2014+ GM truck or 2015+ GM suv it will still vibrate. If you have a number higher than 15 green no matter how many times its balanced it will still shake the truck.

like i say 5 min fix .had drive shaft unbolted asked wife to put tran in neutral so i could but drive shaft in roll to line up to rear end and out i came ..i said put it back in park she looked at me and said well you have to put in the driveshaft ....I SAID ITS DONE ....5 MIN 2- 15 mil hanger bolts ...2 - 10 mil U joint bolts

I had the same problem in my 14 Silverado. They tried everything and ended up being the torque converter. problem solved. apparently they have a lot of problems with them in the later years.

Do you know if there is a TSB for the issue? Maybe there are so many things wrong with this model that they can't pin it down to any one specific problem.

i had the same problem i took it to inland truck service in irving tx found out the drive shaft was out of balance and they fixed the problem it only cost 140 to repair it i took them the drive shaft

William Raedle. Well the problem was the torque converter the bill was 2500 drive shaft helped but once the transmission got repaired no vibration

i read this PDF bulletin for various vibrations and causes in the GM trucks www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM508457/SB-10059132-8827.pdf the document says the drive shaft runout spec is listed at .050" !!! that seems like a big tolerance for something that could cause major vibration issues at high speeds... its noted in the PDF that "*For the best results, the maximum runout should be under .200", if over replace the drive shaft" but everywhere else i have read on the internet most places say .005 and no more then .010, if its .020 or more then it cant be fixed and you need a new one... maybe that PDF has typos? from your measurements, according to the document its technically within tolerance... i wonder if the dealership will do the measurements again to confirm? either way, i hope you find the issues with the vibration of your truck

You do realize there is play in that Yoke?? Where is that Magbase Attached? Should be on a fixed point on the Vehicle.

I lifted my truck in the rear with 2.5in add-a-leafs and larger 33in tires on 20x12 and about 50% of the shake is gone. My next step will have to be this. How much did everything cost?

My 18 has the vibrations after adding a 2” add a leaf and 33s, what did you figure out? I’m thinking of adding degree shims to straighten out the pinion angle or taking out the add a leaf and getting an angled 2” block. Mine shakes between 75-85mph never noticed it before the AAL

@@trey8543 I did nothing else. The larger tires helped immensely. Also mount and balancing every time I do my alignment helps remove nearly 95% of shaking. I've also considered adding the shims like you mentioned. I've heard people swapped out the driveshaft and made major improvements to the issue. Some replaced the axles as well.

TC is usually problem at light on gas between 42/55 mph..If fluid change does not work its then a TC needs replaced..If that does not work its in the programming ..Some are buying aftermarket tune for truck..If it starts when truck is warm on fluid its your TC.Driving at 45 mph shaking if you put it in neutral and shaking stops its your TC not drivesahaft ..

i added a friction additive to mine the problem when away, skunk oil or ford differential friction additive, it keeps the torque converter clutch from glazing which causes a bad shake vibration shimmy feeling in truck

Check for axial play in your u-joints maybe they are not centered i had the same problem took it to an old mechanic and he told that the driveshaft was not centered on the transmission and in the differential u- joints he changed the clips for bigger ones in the u- joints but before that he checked the u joint play yoked shaft end

I have a vibration at about 40-50mph it's going into the shop tomorrow. I think what bothers me about this it the amount the indicator moves when you put pressure on the drive shaft even without turning it. do you think maybe the U-joints are bad?

+zero260asap I pulled the shaft out and had it checked at a local shop. The high and low spots we exactly where I marked them. The driveline tech said a rebalance or even new shaft may not get rid of the vibration entirely. I may have it done at a later time, but I am still wanting to limit what GM can use as an excuse to not perform repairs under warranty,, rejecting warranty work seems to be a sport for some. The movement may be from putting pressure on it and the truck moving up and down as a result.

+Burrito Boy so I've been driving around a 2016 double cab. it shifts a lot better than my crew cab. crew cab is kind of clunky shifting. any way the 2016 has the vibration also. not nearly as bad, and you'd never notice it if you didn't know about it. i can barely feel it. the double cab is a 4x4 and my crew cab has the Z71 package. I'm wondering if he different shocks might have something to do with how it dampens the vibration. I'll let you know if by some miracle they find a fix.

+Burrito Boy Got a call back. they said they are replacing the drive shaft, and that they tried to road force balance two tires and they couldn't. they want to replace 2 tires and GM will only pay for half of the tire cost since it's a wear item. I said that's bullshit, because I've had the issue and told them about it at 5000 miles. I called GM and said I'm not paying anything for tires because it's been an ongoing and documented issue from low miles. we will see what happens.

That's not telling you anything. It is all in how the driveshaft is weighted. That runout isn't that bad. If you took the same measurements on any other vehicle, wouldn't be any better.

I have same vibration issues in my first 2016 Silverado. I went through BBB (lemon law) and I'm set to receive a new 2017 LTZ Silverado. lets see what happens with the second one...

Fixing the Chevy Shakes! Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP 124715 My 2016 Silverado with 82,000 miles has had the shaking issue for a couple years or the 30,000-40,000 miles. This issue for me occurs around the 70mph-80mph range. The center console would shake so bad that I would have to dial back the speed to below 72mph. Measures I have taken to resolve the “Chevy Shakes” None of these worked. 1) Rebalance old tires Free 2) Purchased new tires $1,200 3) Alignment $84 4) Rebalance Drive Line $160 5) Roadmaster Shock Absorber $500 (This did help some of the shakes,\ mostly the handling and ride) Fixed the issue!! 1) Transmission flush with the correct transmission fluid $200 (Whish does not come in transmission from factory) Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP 124715 I was able to flush the transmission myself. There are guides online that can walk you through it if you have the time and skill. Here is a Link: 4L60E Transmission Flush Guide www.newgmparts.com/4l60e-transmission-flush-guide Took me 4 hours and I was able to flush the transmission and change motor oil as well. The dealership wanted $140 for diagnostic and $750 for flush. Since the transmission was my last hope. I purchased the fluid from Summit Racing for $160 and flushed it myself. Amateur tips: If you decide to do the flush yourself, do not pull ½” line on the cooler or the top one You’ll be changing your motor oil too! Do not ask me how I know this. A quick overview of how I flushed my transmission. 1) Pulled 3/8” transmission line out the cooler on the passenger side. I did the by pulling the black keeper down and removing the E-Retaining clip. I then pushed a 3/8” hose in the cooler and a 3/8” hose over the trans line and fastened them into a 4-quart bucket. a. If you are doing this by yourself make sure to be careful. If the hoses are not fastened or held down into the bucket, you could make a big mess. 2) You or your helper (Preferably a helper) turn the vehicle on. Fluid came out of the transmission hose and not out of the cooler. I am not a mechanic but, in some videos, I watched, I have seen fluid pushed out of the cooler. There is a lot of pressure from the pump in the transmission, if a hose pops off, you are going to want someone to turn the vehicle off. 3) With both hoses placed inside a bucket with measurements on it, have your helped turn the vehicle over until there are four quarts or you start seeing bubbles. Kill the truck and do your pan drop. a. Pan drop pro tip. The pan is extremely difficult to get out because the exhaust is right under the pan. If you place a jack on a board and a strap under the board wrapped around the exhaust. Pump the jack up to the frame and tighten down on the strap, slightly pulling the exhaust down (1/4”-1/2”). It does not take much. b. Second pro tip. Purchase a handheld pump from the part store or Walmart. They range from $7-$20. Use it to pump the fluid out of the pan when drop. It will prevent you from making one big mess and covering you and the flor with transmission fluid. Trust me, its worth it! 4) Pull the pan and clean it. The gasket is reusable. You can purchase just a filter from the part store for less than $40 or both for less than $50. 5) Tighten bolts in a cross pattern and refill the transmission with either 8 quarts or however much you were able to get out. I measured exactly 4 quarts in the pan. 6) Once its filled, have your partner drain another 4.5-5 quarts out while shifting through P, N, and Drive. This way you get out as much as you can in the transmission. The fluid should be clean and pink. 7) Fill the transmission back up with however many quarts you pull out MINUS ONE! This way you can put one or two bottles of Lucas Transmission Non-Slip. This is also supposed to help with the shuddering issue and allowing your seals to swell. This is to prevent leaks. a. I was able to put two bottles in. 8) Do not add Lucas additive until the transmission is at operating temperature. You will need to fasten the trans line back to the cooler making sure the E-Clip is fastened securely. 9) The transmission should hold somewhere around 12.5 quarts. I purchased 14 from Summit Racing to make sure I had enough to flush out the old (Fluid comes out clean and pink) 10) DO NOT OVERFILL TRANSMISSION. Watch tons of KZfaq until you are comfortable. Add a half a quart at a time and allow it to run down the tube (where the dipstick goes, 10-15minutes) before you check it again. @@ctb2814 It did actually come back this weekend. The first time i flushed I only got about half the fluid out due to the thermostat. I deleted it by flipping it upside down and flushed it again. Amazon has a really good deal, $100.00 for 12qts. I flushed it yesterday and so far so good.

@@josechase it has. I had drunk college kid back into my passenger side fender. He hit the tire too. The vibration has stopped. I’m scared to get it realigned as it did knock it out of alignment.

Sorry for the noise. I plan on doing it over because the focus is not that great. I'll be sure to wear gloves to prevent the sound. If I get enough views, I will buy a new custom driveshaft and see if it improves the ride.

If you haven't already, check your flange runout as well...just to be sure. Also, check the centering of your U-joint at the input shaft. There is a video here on how to check axial play.

Just had mine done 2015 escalade they reflush transmission and flushed transmission fluid problem solved so far.

Why don't you take the drive shaft out then test drive it in 4 wheel drive see if it still shakes !! You can drive a 4x4 with just the front drive shaft !!

This was about a waste of your time seeing at the front you were picking up imperfections in the materials itself and at the middle .015 is nothing. It could be .200 as long as its balanced the r/o is not a factor! Not sure what you were looking for

It was out of balance. The local driveshaft shop said the marks I made lined up exactly where it would cause the most vibration because weights had to be added at both ends.

i had the same problem changed U joints and hanger then it really shook ..took to a friend ..expert tranny guy .he found the tail stock was bent .. changed drive shaft ..that take 5 min by your self ....4 bolts ...$810 .fixed ..to check pull drive shaft off at dif put tran in neutral get under roll drivshaft by hand see if tail goes up down if it dose thats your fix ,...new drive shaft ,,,,PS BLOCK YOUR TIRES

Course it has run-out, Its a Chevy. Look at all the slop in that driveline. I would buy a Dodge before I bought a Chevy.

The driveshafts are made by AAM. GM isn't the only one putting these in their trucks.

???????? I got a vibration on my 98 GMC K 1500 at 65 mph and above I've had multiple ppl look at it and I keep getting the runaround most of them say the front ends in excellent condition new tires and balanced multiple times in a 3 day period some say it's in the driveway line or maybe transmission motor and transmission rebuild 7 years ago I don't put very many miles on it my profile picture is my truck does anybody have a clue what this could be ??????????

i have the same problem .. i increase the tires pressure to 36 37 psi .. the problem fixed
