Yup, fantastic motorcycles. I've had a 2003 for about 12 years now. One thing in your commentary caught my ear - the smoking on the decell. I replaced valve guide seals on mine twice to no affect. It turned out to be the piston rings. It turns out, unfortunately, that piston rings losing their temper and therefore tension are a "known issue" on these bikes. Pretty darn common. I wound up replacing the piston with the 10:1 compression JE to finally solve the problem. Added bonus is a nice little bump in power over the rather low (8:1?) stock compression ratio.

Yeah, right after this video, I overheated it and ended up doing a top end. Since then I have put another 4k on it and she runs like a top! Interesting about the temper on the rings. Cheers!

Love my XR650L. Love the simplicity, reliability and especially love the price. Yes you can get a bike with more HP and a little lighter but as you mentioned there is a lot that can go wrong and they are nearly double the price. Personally for me they aren't worth the added cost.

4502 ripstream tail trunk. My only minor complaint is that the zippers get a little crusty in the dust. Other than that it's been rock solid. It's been on thousands of miles of dirt roads and has even come off the bike at speed.

Not sure on the rack, but the bag is by Chase Harper, model 4502 RipStream Tail Trunk. Fits the bike perfectly!
