Some caption in the video says the bike has semi-active suspension. It has not. Sorry, I did bad research work here. Its suspension is just electronically adjustable. But apparently not semi-active. Thanks to 'The Stonegate Roadrunner' for pointing it out.
***
Regarding the 'girls bike' statement: if you fail to see how this BMW could possibly be considered as 'girls bike', don't you worry. Because it really isn't. In reality it's a bike made for ANYONE who enjoys a well-handling and forgiving bike which makes it rather simple to go fast. But you'd still be amazed to find out that at least here in Austria not just a few gents out there still would laugh at it. And probably call it something like "not a proper bike". Especially people on +150bhp bikes who like to speed on straights and take corners with 3° of lean angle tend to do so. Simply because their egos can't tolerate the fact of owning a bike which doesn't make head turns just because of looks or showing impressive numbers on paper. And the fact that those kind of people tend to characterise a bike which is easy to ride as "a bike for girls" basically perfectly shows you what kind of primitive morons they must be. Oh how I would love to see those knobheads getting their ass kicked by a girl on a BMW F 800 R :)
---
I have to say in my eyes this bike hits a sweet spot. It has just the right amount of power to be massively entertaining on the open road. It doesn't immediately kick you into those completely bonkers realms of insane speeds where licenses are lost. But as long as the straight bits aren't too long still one would be very hard to catch. Similar to one of my all time favourites, the Street Triple R, the F 800 R offers this great compromise between power, weight and stability. It's powerful enough for street riding, it's lightweight enough to be thrown into corners, while still offering enough of confidence inspiring stability. I'd only need a decent Akrapovic pipe on it to be almost 100% satisfied. If you're looking for a modern bike which is good for proper hooning AND for touring around while remaining somewhat affordable at the same time this beemer might be a great option for you. Personally I'd still take the Street Triple though. Because I simply love the small three cylinder engine from Triumph way too much. Even more than parallel twins!

Yes but the problem of this bike is that shitty sound... Near an MT07 or a sv650 that sound like a Tmax Good video as always =)

Chrikd mine is arkaprovic without catalizer and no dB killer = quad-enduro sound @ low revs and typical boxer sound @ higher revs. and some fireworks when deaccelerating. with or without catalizer doesn’t make a difference to sound. just good for an extra 0.001 hp 😛 ( BMW F800s vs kawasaki Z750 - KZfaq )

F800 is a parallel twin rotax engine.... with the same fire cycling (360) of a boxer. The yamaha mt07 has a 270 degree firing cycle. The best sound to me is the triumph daytona 675 tripple and a moto guzzi V-twin engine.

Agree with the V Twin sound of the SV650, but the MT07??? Even with the Akrapovic titanium it sounds like a Mixer, imho the worst sounding bike in it´s class

I agree with your comments about 'girls bikes'. It is often better to ride a bike that is easy to handle as you can be relaxed and concentrate on the important things like getting your lines right. I had a Gladius for a while as a winter bike. Cheap as chips to buy as nobody wanted a 'girls bike' It handled brilliantly and the power was smooth and easy to manage. My mates took the piss of course… until they saw how quick it was. There was a guy in our group who had an F800R. Nobody could catch him! And he used less fuel than all of us!!
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The Gladius is just another proper fast option for standard roads. But people who prefer impressive specs sheets will never understand. All my skills and confidence is coming from riding a "girls bike" (CB500) for such a long time

The 800R is a mixture of comfort and power, it can go on the road and accelerate very well and at the same time be very docile in the city, this duality is its greatest attribute. If you compare it with other medium bikes like the monster 821, the street triple or the mt 09 clearly can not keep pace with them in acceleration, however my main use for this bike is the city everyday and for this is really agile and comfortable. So if you want a comfty ride in the city with a more than decent road behavior, this is the one.

Nice video, Schaaf! 🤘🏻 I test rode a F800R last year, and I liked it. Compared to the other 800cc motorcycles, the engine doesn't feel very powerful, but the handling, the brakes, and the build quality are amazing. It's a great bike for an everyday use. In France, it isn't considered as a "girls bike", the Suzuki Gladius has this "reputation", mainly because of its blue/white paint...

That was heaps of fun to watch. I did a 450km alpine region run recently with a mate of mine on my stock 2012 and had very little issue keeping close to his 121kw 2018 street triple rs. Straight line speed is no contest between the 2 bikes, his Triumph just has too much power to catch (almost double the kW of the BMW) but through the twisties the F800R with it's greater torque meant I was tight on his back wheel the entire time. Incredibly underrated bike and on a twisty road one of the most fun bikes I've owned (R1,ZX10R, 996, monster)

Great vid. I used to have a Husqvarna Nuda, very very similar, and now that the Nuda is no longer being made (a tragedy) I'm looking at the F800R as a next bike. I've had the fast Japanese 4 pots, had a Triumph Street Triple R, but the torque and upright riding position that these twins provide are just perfect for the real world. Can ride them all day, as fast as anything else out there on a rural road, comfortable and there isn't any frantic revving of the engine to get in the power band, it's the torque that does the work. They suit me, they would probably suit a lot more people if they gave them a try.

i got the exact same bike ! and i'm really enjoying it ! also, i went on a R1200R during the service of my F800R, and going back on it after makes me feel like the F800R is a little mosquito, extremely agile and powerful enough for it's weight. R1200R is a beast ! it push and push again, i love to say about the R1200R that "she's good in everything but doesnt' excell in any sides" meanwhile, my F800R is the queen of the city ! agile, light enough, poweful enough, certainly not good in everything, but she excell in this mid-range power class, and by the way in the "city roadster" class ! I use her everyday to go to work and back, and for some rides during the weekend, was never disappointed ! Even a friend of mine who's an owner of a Street Triple was impressed by the tempo i gave with the F800R, probably because this bike gives you enough confidence to push it far in her limits... Ride Safe !

My dad had one of these a few years back and I've enjoyed the passenger seat quite a few times. It surely is very stable but still "incredibly nimble" (at least compared to the R1100 R he had before). A good bike wich can do everything, including riding fast-ish with two fully grown men onboard :)

I got this bike a year ago as my first proper introduction to a bigger motorcycle from a 600 and I can say that this is a very quick bike if you know how to tame it, the engine doesn't like a lot of revs as it vibrates like a Californian earth quake above 5000rpm. The transmission I found was incredibly smooth and seems to like short shifting up unless you're on a straight. This is probably a bike that would lack power on a straight but has the torque and handling to make a supersport look like a sport tourer on a country road. Fuel wise it's alright but I'm not planning on travelling to the moon with it and the fuel tank being located at the back adds an interesting dynamic as a lot of the weight is over the rear wheel vs usually being centred like on a normal motorcycle so with cornering it tends to understeer a bit I have noticed, though this isn't the end of the world and you can correct this by changing you're throttle input and being more conservative with it on approach and in a corner. All in all I was impressed by the brakes on this bike as they seem to inspire confidence and they would need to be good considering most of the weight is rear ward on this bike. All in all this is a very good bike and in the right hands as with any motorcycle it can be very quick I just wish the right hands were my own 😃

Another great video. We are of the same mind on bike choice. I started riding on a CBR600f3 (2 years) then a cbr954rr then I bought a Suzuki Gs500 for $800. Riding the GS500 made me realize how much faster I could have become a better rider and for so much less money than riding a 1000cc sport bike. Not to mention that the 500 was fun to ride going the speed limit, while my 954 was only fun at +40 over the speed limit or while riding wheelies.

Some good points made here.It is easy to ride and you don't have to rev it hard[as in the video] as being a twin, it produces useful power from about 3000 rpm. A bit of buzz/vibration between 5-6000 rpm, but not too nasty. I have got 450km from a tank riding conservatively, which is useful in the south Island of NZ where Gas stations can be sparse.It is light, great brakes , and handling, flexible engine that has been used by several manufacturers and is well proven.I have encountered a bit of snobbery from BMW flat twin owners [It is a Rotax engine].There is a lot of fun to be had from a mid -sized engine in a light bike on twisty, hilly roads .Bigger is not always better on NZ roads.

I went to watch amateur races at Loudon NH USA. Walking around the pits one guy had an older f800s (I think), it had a belt drive. So I talked about it with him. He said he does loads of racing and he likes the 800 because it doesn't eat up the tires as much as the liter bikes so his costs for the season is much less. He's not a front of the pack guy so he didn't care being on a less powerful bike especially since the track doesn't have a long straight. He loved it he said and had a blast on it. I said "had" because after talking to him he binned it on his next session unfortunately. It happens.

Hello Schaaf! I'd like to ask you something. I had CB500 for 4 years, then FZS600 2 years, and now it's time for something new. I'm looking for a bike that is good for everyday commuting and could be good for sunday trips and some touring - once a year to Austrian Alps or Romanian Carpathian. Do you think that F800R is good for it? I thought of F800GS but I think it's a liitle bit too big and not handy in city. Other option is Yamaha FZ6, but there are plenty of them on the roads. So, what do you think about F800R as everyday comuter and holiday tourer?

Nice video and good driving. Even though I find your style a bit more aggressive than I would feel comfortable with. But I am still a beginner. I also noticed that you persistently stayed on high rpm. Was that on purpose (if you can still remember)? The F800R is my first bike. I wanted something that was loaded with safety systems (particularily the ASC) but still had power. Under these prerequisites, BMW is a no brainer actually. ABS, ASC, Tire Pressure feedback, adjustable suspension. I was not disappointed. 2 years and I am still around. I really enjoy its handling and I always have a feeling of safety riding it. You are right that it tends to rise when braking on an angle, but this is a unique opportunity to learn to apply counter-steering. If I were to complain about something, it would be a sense of dullness, especially the exhaust (mine is also stock and doesn't sound as cool) and above all the amount of vibrations, especially on high rpm. In long rides it can become an issue. I also got to tour with it with a second person on, using a high windscreen, 48lt and ~10kg luggage and a tank bag. The handling was barely impacted by the extra weight but the vibrations battered me. I understand starting low on a first bike, but I am convinced that the F800R is solid and safe choice for beginners, and with it's power it can also accompany you on the next level.

Nice ride dude! You do make all bikes seem better than they probably are :) From my chair the bike seemed really .... bouncy and unstable (not in a good way) ... certainly compared to your CB but also to the other test rides you've had this summer. Even the old Africa Twin looked more planted. I think the 800R only has it's rear suspension electronically controlled (ESA)? The front looks clasically analogue :)

Enjoyed another episode of 'how to schaaf a bike'. I too wouldn't mind riding a 'girly' bike if this is it, but there is something about the esthetics of all BMW models ending with 'R" - to me they look all kind of experimental and incomplete, as if someone had a decent design and then decided to take away most of it. However this is coming from a person that honestly believes that 1100GS is one of the most beautiful bikes ever made. :)
@Schaaf

Totally agree with you on what you wrote from 3:44 to 4:02! but I'd add that it doesn't matter as long as these people (that like to twist the throttle on pure straits and get scared as soon as a turn comes close, those who are a pain in the a** to overtake) don't get on our way mid-corner wise. When I'm enjoying some twisty road carrying some speed the things that scare me the most are: - gravel, oil spils, wet spots... - idiots on bikes who cut and invade my line usually those disrespectful, clueless idiots are the reason why "spirited" riders have such a bad reputation. Also, they are responsible for many accidents that could easily have been avoided. I have learned to ride fast and safe with a Suzuki GS500 and I'm so sad I have to sell it now, it's so fun and rewarding! I just love how light and agile it is, even with its wobbliness. Would have love to share some time with you and your Cb500. Keep the good videos coming, cheers man!
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 7 жыл бұрын
thanks a lot, great comment! Yes exactly. We all should have fun. But please not on MY side of the road when you're actually going in the opposite direction ;) Going round corners to 'discover' another rider on the wrong side of the road happens way too often, especially on mountain roads. These people don't know their machines. They don't know their limits. And therefore shouldn't try to ride hard. Like you are saying they are the ones who're responsible for the bad reputation. I can understand why. On the other hand unfortunately only very few folk realize that spirited riding indeed is possible and even responsible in certain situations as long as the rider knows exactly about his capabilities. In my case for instance it must be a couple of years ago that I made such a grave mistake to get carried into the opposite lane unintentionally. The moment I realize I'm not able to correctly judge my capabilities any longer I'll stop the spirited riding.

Do you think this bike can tour? Of course not for very long distances but for a trip now and then? Do you miss electronic aids? How is the riding position? I was between this and the f700gs, went for the gs but now I'm having second thoughts. Love your videos btw. keep up
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 6 жыл бұрын
yes you absolutely can do trips with it since the seating position is rather upright and relaxed. This bike had traction control. The 700GS surely is the better bike for touring but the f800r would be better for quick road riding. It has a very competitive suspension setup

Hey Schaaf, i have a question regarding gopro, when you use protune, do you use their color preset? Or do you fiddle around with colors in editing program? It looks so nice. PS: why not 60fps and rather 50? Thanks!
@Schaaf

because in Europe we film in PAL resolutions. I'm used to do so because it's almost part of "film ethics" in the professional film world. I use the FLAT Colors in ProTune and definitely fiddle around in post :)

Great Video. Really made me want one of these bikes. Im in the market for a middle weight bike that would be comfortable to do some decent distances every now and then but also, good for commuting and fun to ride. Would you consider this to be better for 400-600km rides than the average middle weight nakedish bike? Was also considering the new suzuki sv650 but now sure how it would go for longer distances.
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Angus! I'd actually say it feels a lot like your average middle weight naked bike because that's what it basically is. At least to my eyes. But it felt a lot more competitive than others. I'd recommend the BMW if you're looking for a sporty compromise.

Angus Irving I have one. I love it. I commute 120 miles round-trip per day on mine. mostly highway miles. It doesn't have quite the beans that a liter bike does but it makes up for it in handling. I meet up with all types of bikes on my ride and I have no issues keeping up with larger displacement bikes and I can out maneuver most others in traffic. Just a couple of days ago I was "aggressively negotiating" some heavy traffic with a guy on a CBR 1000rr and I was able to get ahead of him relatively easy because I was more nimble. On the strait away once traffic lightened up he pulled away from me....but I expected that and he should have with with about 80 more BHP than me.

I had one of these in the F800ST guise, it was my first bike and was incredibly quick in real world conditions. I had a mate with a gixxer600 that unless he kept it constantly at 10k when you made overtakes the instant torque would embarrass supersport bikes! By time they pulled up and went by you had made pass and were settling back in. I replaced it with a K1300s, and to some extent i miss not being able to wring the neck out of it and use every available horse power! The only let down was the suspension being too soft.

I'm a girl and I ride this bike, I really love it but the sound of the bike could be better🤔 I even did off road with the F800R! It's great when you start riding with this bike, you really feel comfortable and confident. I ride even if it's snowing or freezing outside and I never fall down. The system on this bike really saved my life a couple of times. As an owner of an F800R I can say that the bike is excellent on the road and the price is correct, but after you have to change something to repair something or something else on this bike...it costs a lot sometimes. Maybe it depends on the country. Again if you are starting riding, this bike is awesome and you will feel confident and safe riding it! Enjoy and be careful on the road.😊🏍

An aftermarket windscreen gets the job done. I have an F800R myself and I find it much more comforable with a higher windscreen. The high Wunderlich screen makes it comfortable even if you ride on the German Autobahn with 210 - 220 kph.

yeah it does. I owned a 2015 model for a year and the high frequency buzz on the bars at 80-95mph on motorways did my head in. even with with grip puppies on. Crap stock exhaust sound too. Good brakes, headlight, tyre pressure monitors, was stable, quite torquey, looked quite nice. Sold it for a V-twin Yam XV950R with only 52hp but I much prefer it.

You say it doesn't want to turn into the corners quite enough... Roll your bum across the seat slightly into the turn and you will find the F800R will take any corner in a perfectly balanced state. The F800R needs a very slight inside weight shift. It will turn in instantly and then maintain that cornering lean with no input from you until you turn out again and command it to stand up and go straight. All bikes want to stand up if you touch the brakes. My personal opinion .... with todays bikes, 800cc is the absolute sweet spot. Forget the litre plus bikes, they are just ego boosters. Ps. Go a little smoother on the throttle. ( 2013 F800R rider) M
