2016 BMW Z4 UNBOXING Review - A Proper Porsche 718 Boxster Fighter?

Today we bring you the 2016 BMW Z4 unboxing review, and it'll probably be one of the last reviews of this car. Ever. How come? Because Z4 production has already ended. But no worries, there will be a Z5 successor, although not right away. In the meantime, we wanted to get a better look at the Z4 in order to see whether or not BMW managed to make it a Porsche 718 Boxster competitor. The quick and short answer: no. However, the Z4 is more of a Mercedes SLC fighter, and that's not at all a bad thing. Power comes courtesy of twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.
Our tester was the mid-level sDrive35i, meaning the base Z4 engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four with 240 ponies and 260 lb-ft of twist. Suggestion: go for the inline-six. Performance is also decent, with a 0-60 mph time of 5 seconds and an electronically controlled top speed of 155 mph. Unlike the first generation Z4, this outgoing second-gen features a folding hard top setup, which is fine only that it adds weight. Our car also came with the optional M Sport Package and Estoril Blue Metallic exterior paint. So, is the 2016 Z4 a good BMW roadster? Is it a proper "Ultimate Driving Machine"? All cars have their good & less good sides. I recently bought a 2014 20i Z4. For me the plus points: 1. Overall design. Looks beautiful, topless AND roof up. 2. Folding hardtop. Versatile. 3. Interior unique and stylish (I have the Valencia Orange Pure Traction version). 4. 2 Litre engine reasonably economical especially where I am there are annual taxes based on engine size which can run into 4 figures (in $) for larger engines. Even though a 2 litre it’s strong enough for my purpose and still sounds good. 5. It gives a feeling of overall quality and sturdiness. 6. Still has useable boot space, even though limited. (Found some made to measure luggage). 7. No longer produced & not too many around so quite a rare sight which makes a change from most cars that seem to look like each other now, especially different models from the same manufacturer e.g. Audis, BMWs, Mercs. 8. A sense of occasion whenever I drive it. (not my daily). 9. Modern enough to have what you want without it being a computer on wheels with LEDs and digital everything. I still love the slightly now retro speed/tacho dials. Haven’t noticed any drawbacks yet as used as a second car and not daily. I guess Porsche would be a more performance oriented car and I personally like them but right now for me I prefer the Z4’s looks with that gorgeous shape and folding hardtop do it for me 😉

I own the 2016 35is M package vehicle. Black on black. Even in 2020 this vehicle turns heads. It looks elegant yet very sporty. Friends call it my Batmobile. It is a pleasure to drive, handles well, and MOVES !! BTW in 2020 they are still making a Z4, there are no more hard top BMWs in their line up anymore, so the newest version of this is a soft top. This IS my daily vehicle and i Love driving it.

I have a 2015 Z4 35is and love it! Like any car it has it's pluses and minuses. It doesn't handle like a Boxster but that's OK with me. It's much sexier than the Boxter. The Z4 is also one of the few convertibles that look as good with the top up as it does with the top down. I'm concerned 2016 is the last year. I'm wondering what effect that might have on the value of my car? Really like UNBOXED!

The value will obviously go down once a new model becomes available.. But then again, it is a roadster and last of the true BMW one's, so it will always retain more value then a regular car of the same age.. I got me a 2010 30i just a few weeks ago and I'm not worried at all it will lose value.. Since I bought it 2nd hand most of the depreciantion on it was already "suffered" by the previous owner(s).. I would never buy such cars new unless I really had money to burn..

Most reviews always cover the top of the range, or only those sold in the US. If the 23i was sold in the US it would probably have gone for $35k. Most Euro cars will be the 23i, the base model, mainly due to more economical mpg.

Love my Z4. Was thinking about the Porsche but too any horror stories regarding engine problems and unwillingness off dealers to help with said problems

Mark Rhoden Same I got a 2009 Z4 and I don’t understand why people are complaining about the handling.. I mean, it really feels like a go kart on the road. Mine has gone only 32000km and it’s a 10 year old car, so it is like new!

Why you don't compare the 35is to a boxter s I have no idea. The 35is is much faster and way better looking than the pedestrian looking boxter.

I still find it a bit funny that in the US they always only sell the bigger engine specs, I guess the smaller ones simply would not sell at all so they do not even bother.. In Europe we also have a 20i (184 hp) and even a 18i (156 hp).. All the same engine as the 28i, a 4-cylinder 2.0L turbo, just with different software etc resulting in less HP.. So a 35i is pretty high-end spec.. I cannot afford a new one (and if I could I would wait for the Z5 now) but I am looking into buying a 2nd hand one, with a straight six preferably because I'm not a big fan of turbo driven engines.. So my favorite engine for the Z4 E89 is the 30i 3.0L version with 258 HP, but they are a bit hard to find.. 23i's with the 204 HP 2.5L version of the straight six are on offer a lot and then some 35i's for just a few thousand more.. I really do not know what I will end up with right now tbh.. 23i's are the easiest to get but the 204 HP might be a bit lackluster, the 30i is my favorite but not that many on the market and the 35i has that turbo.. 1st world problems!

Finally made the decision, I got me a 2010 Sdrive 30i with the last of the classic BMW NA i6 engines.. I love it and believe me, 258HP is more then enough to still break the speedlimit and lose your license in seconds.. 35i is total overkill unless you live in Germany with limitless autobahns or you want even more huge acceleration in very short bursts.. And again, that classic NA i6 is something special..

I had a 2014 Z changed to a 2018 2 series Coupe had it 9 months and gone back to a 2016 Z M Sport 2-0 Auto - The 2 is boring.

I don't know about this car. I like it, but I'd rather have the Mercedes SLC. I don't like the interior of it very much, but I can see some other people really liking it. I really do like that fold up screen though, it's really cool.

Im not keen on the interior shown here- but if you get the Orange version with Orange Sport seats or the cream interior they look so much damn nicer

Dude you must be a little guy. I have a 2010 Z4 35I and it takes more effort for me to get in and out of that car at 6 ft tall. Everything I'm seeing in the 2016 is no different than my 2010.Oh and F a Boxster Boxsters have less features less horsepower and I kinda doubt they handle better. The Z4 is a better car than the Boxster and is much cheaper. I originally wanted a boxter but after doing my research I got my Z4 for far less money than a comparable boxster. I'm pretty sure this dude hasn't driven a boxster or Cayman because they're not any faster than this car.

BMW z5 will be called a z4 bmw changed it again and BMW is helping Toyota the next z4 will not have any Toyota on it.its going to be 100 percent bimmer the Toyota will have BMW parts
