( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2016 Chevy Volt is a plugin hybrid that can go up to 53 miles on electricity only. But how far can it go in EV mode on the highway, and what sort of MPG does it get over TFLcar's 100 Mile real world MPG highway test loop? Watch this video to find out.

That's great that you do this! We own a 2014 Volt but the electron mileage changes significantly in the winter time, due a lot to using electricity to heat the car (if the gas engine comes on, it uses the heat generated by that). In the warmer months here in Massachusetts, we get 50-55 miles on a charge (Chevy says average around 39) and in the winter, it drops to 30-35 miles. We drive gently as it's fun trying to optimize mileage. We also get 38-42 mpg when the battery is used up, which is pretty good for any car. Also, driving @ 75 mph affects mileage a lot, electric or gasoline. I'd love to see your test in the summer and see what you get. And without the a/c if possible.

Andre is the best! Really enjoyed this test. It would be interesting to do another test on a perfectly calm day temp around 70 no accessories on and drive it on a 50 mph rd, completely stack the deck in favor of milage. I've done this with my F150 just to see what it's really ultimately capable of.

Two HUGE factors that got you under the 75mpg, one was the speed of 75mph... this car does outstanding at 55mph, the 75 really kills the mpg... second big factor is the cold temps, the battery will not do it's usual 52 mile range with that low 30's temp. Redo this durring the summer (or california tempuratures) and do 55-60mph and you might have hit 100mph.

This is true. My 2014 Volt has a meter on the right of the instrument cluster that stays green until you exceed 50 mph. The higher the speed the less the range. Putting the Volt in L on the transmission is ideal for stop and go traffic in LA. In L you rarely need to use the brake since the car reverted immediately after you lift your foot from the accelerator. I can get as high as 52 miles on a charge. The 2014 Volt is rated at 38 miles on a charge. I bet the 2016 Volt would get 65-67 miles on a charge in stop and go traffic and traffic less than 50 mph. The Volt so dominates.

I think the colder ambient may have affected the battery charge, but also hauling 2 people at 75 mph would also not get you the peak mpg numbers like 1 person at 65 mph. Also the gas engine will not do as well at elevation during the portion of the return loop.

It is a special car. I owned a base model 2013 for a few years and loved it. My wife then got into it with a high trim 2013. I set up level 2 chargers for both. Late 2021, I traded my base 2013 in on a 2019, the last year they were made. We love them. A great car, discontinued not for it's quality, but because they exceeded the number that qualified for federal tax rebates. They are one of GM's successes for quality and economy. Without the rebate, it's too costly for the size class for most folks.

The "apparent" mpg of around 42.3 at mostly 75mph for the last 61-or-so miles of the loop... that's very much in line with the EPA-estimated 43 mpg for gas only. I'm very curious to see how my new car might compare over a similar distance at that speed (and by the way... what was the temp?)... but I won't have a chance to do so for a couple of months. Cool! I think any review of the Chevy Volt should emphasize that if you drive less than about 50 miles per day you will use NO GAS at all since the Volt has an all-electric range of at least 50 miles -- after which, the gas generator kicks in automatically to take you another 350 miles at 42 MPG if you need it. But around 80% of Americans drive less than 50 miles a day. If they all drove Volts and charged up each night they would typically use NO gas at all. That would be a big plus for the environment.

@BlackCloud0351
@BlackCloud0351 7 жыл бұрын
Jianzhang Wu, my CT200h consistently averages 43 mpg, and that's driving "normally" w/o using any hypermiling techniques, be it around town and then, with my cruise set at 73 mph on the interstate (Florida, 70 mph limit). The highest I've ever recorded was 51 mpg, but that was under perfect conditions where all of my driving was done in town, dealing with lots of traffic lights, and with the vehicle frequently running in electric mode. Hope that helps you out some!
@tom1kahn
@tom1kahn 8 жыл бұрын
They never said if they had the heater running in Electric Mode. The Volt can heat the cabin from an electric heater (that can sap up to 50% of the electric range) or it can heat the cabin the same way gas cars do from the radiator and heat exchanger for "free" heat when running on gasoline. Rather than use up the electric range all at once, you can do better by alternating between Hold and Normal Modes and blasting the heat when in Hold Mode on gasoline. Also use the seat heaters and turn off the cabin heat when in Electric Mode. At least that is how the hypermilers would do it. The number they got in electric mode sounds like they were blasting the heat pretty good for the first electric miles. BTW... if the temperature is below 35 degrees, it alternates between gasoline mode and Electric Mode automatically to maximize the MPG based on your heat settings.

You can drive the Volt exclusively on gas if you wanted to. It's more fun on battery, but it'll run just fine on gas. A charge from empty takes anywhere from 13-19 hours if you're using a standard 110v outlet. On a 240v charger, it's around 4 and a half hours. But the upcoming 2019 Volt comes with a faster charger that can charge it to full in around 2 hours. Electricity for my Volt was around $45 a month on average. I drive it around 1000 miles a month, but sometimes I can go 1500 just doing joyrides around town on electric. 10 miles here, 25 miles there, adds up pretty fast lol. But it's really fun to drive it on electric.

Can you run the AC or Heater while charging? Can you run the AC or Heater while parked unplugged with lights off? I heard you can't and that it shuts off after 30 minutes. Does the front passenger seat fold flat?
@flipadavis
@flipadavis 8 жыл бұрын
Yes you can precondition the car whether it plugged in or not. In fact the Onstar app let's you remotely start and precondition from your mobile device. That's one good thing about an EV is that it can precondition in a closed space like a garage because there are no emissions. It will shut off after 30 minutes if you leave it running because if it continues to run forever then it will eventually turn on the gas generator which would be bad in a garage. But you can simply go back to your app and restart it. The front passenger seat almost lies flat. I easily can carry 9' 2x4s by running them up to the front to seat. In fact just the other day I was able to load 8 10' 2x4 light guage metal tracks diagonally by running them up to an on top of the dash to the back corner of the hatch.

Guys, using your battery as well as fuel to measure gas milage doesn’t make any sense. You could use up the battery, driving 45miles, then use an ounce of gas and claim it does 500mpg. An honest test means testing the battery range and gas milage separately without one supplementing the other.

The "FIRST" click method is MORE accurate, because it's when the gas FIRST touches the nozzle. The second click happens when the system realizes a second time that the gas is ABOVE the max line, which can be DIFFERENT EVERY TIME. Also, overfilling is bad for the car, emissions, and mpgs.

+Roman Bobrakov We don't overfill the fuel tank. We just let the gas settle into the tank to eliminate the air in the system as best as possible. Try the double click after 30 seconds yourself and you'll see what happens. Nothing is overfilled but the car is more accurately filled.
@Stuka87
@Stuka87 8 жыл бұрын
+Roman Bobrakov What they do is more accurate. Lets the air bubbles out, so you get a "more full" tank, but not overfilled by any means. Heck, some new cars require you to do this to actually get a full tank.
@Roman-uc3bs
@Roman-uc3bs 8 жыл бұрын
+The Fast Lane Car With all due respect, please research "Topping off" the gas tank. Every reputable car magazine says not to do it. Now put it in Hybrid mode to see what the real HWY mpg is. As with this test the further you drive the MPG would have done nothing but drop till you hit the gas engine efficiency. Still fun video but you can't put this number against other hybrids as the 1st 37.4 miles of this test were electric only miles. If you subtract out the 1st 37.4 electric miles and do the math at 98 - 37.4 = 60.6 gas/hybrid mode miles divided by the 1.436 gallons of gas = 42.20 gas/hybrid mpg. Unfortunately this car only wins when its driven at or below its electric mile range when compared with the Prius. That being said the majority of this vehicles miles are going to be driven at or below its electric range by most drivers. So I would still rather have it over a Prius. Plus it looks nicer than a Prius. Good video TFL!!

The 2014 Cadillac ELR in my garage has 75K Miles. However, other than a tweaked software program, the ELR and Volt Powertrains are identical. After all, they were built on parallel assembly lines in Hamtramck Michigan. From experience I can honestly tell you that you real world MPG Test is not the way I drive. The HV Battery is for City Traffic and the ICE Generator is for HWY Driving. I select HOLD when I'm going on the Interstate. That saves the HV Battery for the Stop and Go Driving in the City environment. All the other reviewers here are spot on in saying the same basic thing. Plug in Hybrids give you the CHOICE to select your energy source. I get 250mpge in the City and 35mpg HWY. Real World numbers. Max EV Miles for me has never been more than 42 (Older Powertrain and Smaller Battery). Also, I only use Premium per GM's Owner Manual. I have used 1.6 gallons of fuel in the past 1,100 miles of driving according to the CUE Energy Usage Page. Great Cars... However, in all fairness Thank You for a Real World MPG Job Well Done... JP

Well, in my area I pay roughly $0.16 per kwh, and it takes about 13kwh to charge the volt. That makes $2.08 to charge the battery and a total of about $4.80 for the loop (gas at $1.89). Making 40 mpg you get $4.72. It should be noted that if I do this again in the summer I'll see the volt win as electricity costs more in the winter here.

+Aric Tan The only reason that gasoline costs more than electricity is because electricity is not taxed. This is strictly a political calculation on the part of politicians -- basically to tax cars is OK, but taxing the way that people heat their homes is political suicide. This calculation could change at any time -- wiping out your savings. If you subtract out the taxes and look at the price per Kilowatt, you'll discover that the energy content costs about the same.

+jehl1963 Well, gas prices fluctuate like crazy due to supply and demand. At least with electric costs, it's pretty much a set rate, and not going to suddenly spike up because a Wall St speculator decided they wanted another mansion, or someone in the Middle East sneezed and caused oil prices to soar. If nothing else, at least the electric is produced locally, so in the US you're using American power. And if you put solar panels on your roof, then you're getting true zero emissions driving, and won't need to be dependent on a country whose people hate your guts, but love your money.

+electrictroy2010 That still doesn't change the facts that the average total commute for Americans is under 40 miles a day. Sure there is a fraction of a percent of Americans that commute from LA to San Diego or other ridiculously long commutes but that isn't a precedent to say this car is a failure because it only satisfies 95%+ of Americans' driving needs. You could make the same argument for the Prius not being a good car because it can't tow a horse trailer. in fact there are probably more light duty vehicles that need this capability out there than have your 200 mile daily commute.

For longer distance cruising, the Prius is still King. However if you're spending 90% of the time tooling around town or the suburbs, just like that gen.1 Volt this car is unbeatable.
@robertdoeden1677

Why is the Prius the King? First, the gas engine is on all the time, 2nd it does not have a heavy battery so the ride is much poorer, in fact my neighbor has a hybred Lexus SUV like the Prius and its ride is much poorer than my Volt, 3rd my cost per mile is much less than the Prius. I get about 125 miles a day for a cost of almost exactly $2 using only the battery. I rarely use the gas engine. 4th, After changing the crappy American tires that came on the car to Michlin's the car handles better than my BMW which now sits in the garage most of the time. Do yourself a favor and sell that Prius and buy a used Volt and you will be a happier man.

The Volt is not designed to get maximum long range mpg. It is designed for the typical driver that drives less than 50 miles per day. Ask yourself if you typically drive less than 50 miles per day. If so, but you could literally get over 2,000 mpg per year. 50 miles x 365 days = 18,250 miles / 8 (volt will burn one tank of gas per year to keep gas fresh even when it can use battery) = 2,281 mpg. My Volt averages 103 lifetime mpg after driving 48,000 miles in 26 months. I drive about 60 miles per day and it gets about 42 miles per charge. As high as 52.2 miles on a charge. Best conditions to achieve high battery miles is stop and go traffic on a freeway in L gear. Under 50 mph and 60 + degrees. That said I drive it like hate it. I blow away most cars at lights. I really takes off crazy from stop lights. I love this car. $22,195 after rebates and tax credits.

+Mark S ELECTRICITY IS NOT FREE. These guys ignore that fact when testing the Volt or other plugins. PRIUS == $1.90 gasoline per 50 miles. VOLT EV == $2.22 at 13cent/KWh. So in reality the Volt and other plugins are MORE expensive to run .. Also after the Volt battery drains empty, it is only averaging 41 mpg in pure gas mode (example: driving LA to Vegas). The Prius will average 50mpg and therefore still be the cheaper car. AND the Prius (or any standard gasoline/diesel car) costs 15,000 dollars less to buy than volt. These are the basic facts which car reviewers of the Volt or plugins never, ever mention to their audience .

Unless your route was hilly, the cabin heat probably ruined the MPG test. Do the test again when the ambient temp is 80 degrees or so, the batteries are more efficient and you won't be tempted to use the cabin heat. The seat heaters are more efficient and so is the cabin cooling when in "Eco" mode. On a 100 mile loop I can do better in my 2014 Volt. The 2016 should have blown mine away.

Here's my theoretical calculation: if I take the 100 mile test, minus the 53 miles that's ran on battery alone. That gives you 47 miles ran on gas. Divide the distance by 1.436 gallons will give you 32 miles per gallon. Wait, that's not the end of the calculation because the battery is somewhat charged. How much of the battery is charged? Andrea did not say. If after they filled up, they continue to drive on battery until the battery is exhausted. That would give you the "gas only"; mileage.

That was not a fair bet. Both of you should have said a number, not just one of you. I'd have taken that bet it wouldn't exceed 75 mpg knowing the chances were pretty slim. That said, I was expecting a lower number. Mid 50s was what I expected. Obviously, the longer the highway drive, the lower that number would go. 37 miles on battery at 75 mph is pretty good, I think. City dwellers ought to be able to avoid gas stations for very long stretches.

No MSRP of $33,150 minus a federal tax incentive of $7,500 for a starting price of around $26,000. Also since most people commute less than 40 miles a day and the new Volt has a 53 mile all electric range then you will hardly use the 42 mpg combined. Plus it will blow the doors off any hybrid that gets the same or better mpg whether it's running in hybrid or pure EV mode.

+Philip Davis Well, in this test, the Volt only got 37 miles in EV mode only. That's a 30 percent hit because of the cold weather. That seems to be too much of a hit just to blame it on the weather. 53 might be too optimistic in real world driving. Chevy might end up getting sued if it turns out people are regularly getting below 40 in EV mode.

+theexmann I've been driving a gen 1 Volt for over 3 years and I mostly get over the EPA rating most of the year. And I certainly don't hypermile because I like to just drive it how I would any car. I also do a good portion at highway speeds. When the temp drops into the 40s it begins to drop below the 38 mile EPA range. When it gets into the low 20s I get about 24 miles range. It doesn't get incredibly cold where I live so the worst range I ever got was 20 miles on the freeway going 55-65 when it was in the teens outside. Anyway most of the year I get over 38.
@flipadavis
@flipadavis 8 жыл бұрын
+theexmann It not only got less because of the temp but also because they were doing 75 mph. Any car will get under their mpg rating if driving at those speeds. This isn't unique to EVs. According to studies done at Oak Ridge National Laboratory gas cars also loose about 12% of their efficiency in 20 degree weather but people don't notice because they have over a 300 mile range normally.
