This Ford Explorer came into the shop for a simple rear wheel hubs job, but it turned into a 2 day ordeal. The quality of alloys that most manufacturers use nowadays is really poor. That combined with Canadian salty roads and humid climate creates many issues like seized up bolt, nuts, other mechnisms, etc...
I really think that on every vehicle sold in canadian market there should be additional corrosion protection applied at the factory to avoid all the grief that mechanics have to go through in order to complete the work on the vehicles. I hope this message goes through to the manufacturers and maybe one day the engineers will start designing the vehicles again...

I am happy that people find it interesting and entertaining. When I stumble upon this kind of problems in the future I will definitely make some videos again :)

2 days? It would have been cheaper to replace the whole knuckle/stub assembly.

That's why the customer pays the book rate.

grease on that flange from the factory would have prevented this. too bad the manufacture doesn't care

The cause of the problem is the road salt gets in between the knuckle assembly and the bearing. The bearing gets siezed into hub.

Excellent video except that kid in the beginning sucking on that vape like he was some sort of junkie. Can't he go 2 minutes without vaping?

i think you need hydraulic press to remove that. You pull the whole assembly out and press out the bearing...After watching you put torch to it you need to replace whole assembly... get a manual Chiltons should cover that oh they don't make it anymore too bad...

We appreciate the feedback, but allow me to explain a few things. Here is how it would go in reality: You try to remove the knuckle off the vehicle and break most of the suspension components as they are also seized, then you spend tremendous amount of additional time (and money) replacing those components and possibly ruining the knuckle as well (keep in mind that the time it would take to do both sides would greatly exceed the time it took us to do it the way we did it). About torch: all the non metal components were constantly cooled with water. The only thing that was heated was the actual wheel hub to be replaced. The knuckle did not get excessive heat as the plastic ABS sensor that was also seized in it did not melt and worked fine after the repair. So it can be assumed that the alloy knuckle did not get the heat required to compromise its integrity.

I think the proper tool is called "Hydraulic Shop Press"

Unfortunately, that would mean breaking a lot more suspension components.

It costs number of hours multiplied by the shop rate

Customer pays the book rate. That's the reason why book rates are published. You don't want shops to charge you 3 hours for a 1 hour job. While he was busy talking away and drinking coffee the rest of the other 2 hours or working on his own crap.

@2nickles647 Yes, the book rate at Ford dilership would be about 4-5 hours, but it would include replacing all the suspension components, and you would have to pay for the additional parts extra, of course. So, in the end, it will actually cost much more. And about the mechanics that drink coffee instead of working. Those kinds of shops dont stay in business for long😏
