+WRB I had an ecoboost f150 ford over 3 years and never had a problem with it. It was a great motor and liked more than a V8

+Frank Mischler I prefered the 3.5 because of the torque and made towing really easy and helped get up to speed. The 5.0 is a great motor from what I've heard and I think the new ones get the same mpg as the 3.5 but I'm not sure but the 3.5 has terrible mpg while towing. I did have a turbo intercooler go out on mine and it was a pretty costly repair. Ford deffinitly did something right with the ecoboost. I would test drive one to see how you like it. I hope you find the one you want

+Trevor Prueitt I thought those don't go out, but end up full of oil/condensation blowby building up due to the Ford engineers not coming out with a fix.... the backs of the valves end up effected as well. all because of shitty direct injection. I would go v8 all day long because it's a better starting point for making more power in the end, as well as many of the cops have ecoboosts and are always replacing the turbos. make sure you check the gaps on your plugs from the factory. Also keep a good eye on your turbo oil lines. Lastly invest in a proper catch can setup.

These things had better be reliable and have good longevity and be durable. When President Obama came in, fuel prices rose, and He has mandated fuel economy requirement that are unbelievably HI, along with unproven EPA requirements. We will now see overtaxed small Turbocharged Engine's. Transmissions with to many gears, and transmissions with metal rubberbands called CVT's as well as car bodies lightened at any cost. Also smaller suspension control arms and components with more aluminum used. These will lessen the reliability and durability of your new expensive car or truck.

Hey Ron have you ever been to Europe? I made my first trip there in October and feel more than ever that we don't realize how nice it is here at times. They are super supposedly "green" countries and if you are walking in the cities your like why does it smell like smog a lot of times. Well the diesels are making it smell horrible. I don't want to live in a diesel smell either. And yes I do remember when the number fudgers were exposed. But just as recent as the sotu address last week. He claims " the debate is over" it's real. Any weather pattern change and they say see we need to drive an electric car instead of your work truck. Oh and pay more. And China, India, Africa, middle east, you pretty much can pollute as much as you want because your as he said not as developed as a nation. What do you think?

Always stick with the V8...no replacement for displacement. The smaller engines are nice for MPG but I dont think they would hold up durability wise

+Joshua Fuentes I went with the 5.0, as far as mpg goes around here the v6's don't actually get any more miles per gallon as I live in the mountains and the v6 has to drop a gear while climbing hills and the v8 seems to stay in overdrive more. If I take it easy in my 5.0 I can get 17-18 mpg. On the highway it'll go all the way up to 21 mpg.

Not dogging your decision on the V8, I wish I had gotten the V8 over the Ecoboost as well because of the sound but, did you even try driving the 3.5TT other than just around the block? 3 years ago when I visited my folks back in Arizona, my '12 screw with 3.5tt had no problems driving in the mountains, and the July temps were over 115 degrees. If you ever seen the Davis Dam towing tests with F150s in the past, that's not even 20 miles from where I grew up and have driven up that hwy many times. I hauled a 3500 lb trailer up that in 6th gear. I manually bumped it down to 5th to keep the engine from getting hot but it never bogged down or downshifted automatically when i had it in 6th. The 3.5 is a low-rpm torque monster where as the 5.0 is a high rpm high horsepower screamer.

We rented one and drove it about 190 miles for a concert and it was unreliable junk. It seemed so cheap. It wasn't even fast and it sounded like a bad 4 cylinder

You do have to get the boost up before launching if you're drag racing and doing 0-60 times. Otherwise you'll have a turbo lag. It will beat a 5.0 even if you launched the 5.0 at the same 1500rpm.

I would have to personally disagree with this comment, my 2011 3.5 ecoboost just turned over 150k, pulls a 7k lb work trailer all over almost every day, repairs done since new: ... 2 sets of spark plugs, and 1 coil, front brake rotors, power window switch, and the resistor pack that controls heater fan speed... not bad at all I must say.

+Dustin Burton There are obviously different driving styles, and equipment is not always exactly the same. have you heard of the 5.4 cam issues? probably 50% of trucks required major engine work at around 150.. others never even knew there was a problem. I've owned several supercharged and turbo'd engines. they ALL require additional maintenance. I guess you're just one of the lucky ones.. - until next week

+Joshua Stilwell I had a 3v 5.4 with big cams, beehive springs and cam phaser limiters, 3000 RPM stall, 4.56 gears, shorty headers and true dual exhaust....Never had any issues out of the engine for the 6 years I drove it... And I drove it HARD. It would do 152 MPH. The only issue I had was the radiator hose cracking and breaking the driveshaft in half twice, but it did have some pep to it.

I agree, I timed the runs several times each and continuously got the eco boost at 1/2 second faster. Would still choose the 5.0 over the v6 if I were to buy a new one. Just my preference.

I prefer the sound of whistling turbos to a big, heavy V8 any day. You can hear that V8 really well while it's screaming to 4800 RPMs to reach peak torque. GM needs to evolve past the formula for power that was used in the '60's. There's better ways to achieve big power other than a big engine. Ford proved it.

+CajunRulez the video is comparing the 5.0L V8 to the ecoboost. The 5.0L makes its peak torque quite high compared to most V8s as it has DOHC and Ti-VCT. You may like the whistle of a turbine driven compressor, but they don't make the harmonic sounds a V8 does. The V6 sounds fine and works fine, it is the 4 cylinder ecoboosts I don't like as they sound like crap as all 4 cylinders do. The other problem with the turbo'ed engines is that they have to work hard to come close to the advertised power as they rely on boost.

More torque in more places? LOL No. Look at the torque curves on the 3.5. It's pushing full torque WAY before the 5.0 even thinks about torque. Once the NA 5.0 winds up, it's a beast. It takes a bit though. The 3.5 just rockets from idle. I used to be from the v8 school, but dang... I love driving a diesel too. Can't justify a diesel, but the 3.5/2.7? Amazing machines.

Actually that's only true when a 2.7 has 3.55 gears and the 3.5 has 3.31 gears... But in a 1/4 mile race with that gearing, the 3.5 wins. Now put the same gear in both and the 3.5 wins. The thing is, a 0-60 test really doesn't show power, mainly torque and gearing. Both engines make peak tq so early they are both very quick in terms of 0-60. Do a 0-100 and the 3.5 has a clear advantage over the 2.7.

It seemed to me there was some initial lag upon take off for the Eco-boost, usually they're a little faster than the 5.0, even so I'll take the 5.0 V8 any day of the week, LOL!

Long time since you asked, but it could be a few things. A lot of work f150s come with a NA 3.3 or 3.5L. Could also be a 3.31 ratio

ezekiel198 they actually cancel out the bad sound quality to make it sound better. If you sit in one and rev it and then open the door which cancels the sound augmentation you'll hear the difference

Space Cowboy straight piped eco boost sounds like my garbage disposal when metal is stuck in the blades. Aka, it sounds like shit! There is no replacement for displacement. Get a properly tuned 5.0 or throw a super charger and it’ll absolutely scream by any 3.5 ecoboost
