2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - Fuel Pump Replacement (Fix long cranking start / ESS Light)

2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee
3.6L Pentastar V6 w/ ESS 2WD
At the time I replaced it, the Jeep had 102k miles and was around 5-1/2 years old.
I had problems with long crank times after the vehicle had sat for a number of hours. Sometimes it would fail to start and require a second attempt.
Narrowed problem down to Fuel pump, so in the video I talk about replacing the fuel pump, and try to point out what all needs to be done to replace the fuel pump.
Its too bad Jeep didn't include a hatch to access the fuel pump from inside the vehicle.

THANK YOU for describing the "auxiliary fuel pump" module. Having dealer replace my primary fuel pump and they wanted another $900 to replace the auxiliary (of which, 90% of that cost is the auxiliary pickup itself and apparently on backorder). Hearing that there's no actual pump in that side confirms my fears that I don't need to replace that unless that hose or pickup cracks.

Great video buddy! Just wanted to let you know that my dealership said you could access the fuel pump (2015 grand Cherokee high altitude) by removing the back seat and using an access panel to the top of the tank. Hope you didn’t go through all that work for nothing. Thank you for explaining why it always starts right off with the remote start! Makes sends and helps diagnose the problem.

2011 here. Had this problem for years. FP relay and ASD relay failures. Recall has been done. Ug. 🙄

There is an access to the fuel pump underneath the rear seat. It has to be taken out

My Jeep has started to do this as well. I wonder if there is something that can be added to the fuel to "clear" or "flush" the fuel pump? That seems like a bigger job I want to tackle when the vehicle still runs. Dealer quoted me $2200 for this job.

Did you by any chance have check engine on or any misfires? Iam having a rough start on my 2016 Grand jeep Cherokee Iam thinking on changing the fuel pump just not sure.

I have not have any misfires. I had a check engine code maybe 20k miles ago about I think it was a bad crank sensor, and that caused some weird engine feedback. Was a very easy fix, but the check engine code told me exactly what it was, and after swapping with a new one, been running solid.

I just started having this same issue on my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Altitude package. Every morning it kind of struggles to turn on same happen on my way back from work. When the engine is hot it will start up like it normally would but if its been sitting for a while it cranks more than usual. I have warranty at the dealership i purchased it and hope its covered if not im screwed lol.

Powertrain won't cover it... there's a lot of people having the same issue. Seems like a seal or something Chrysler decided to go cheap on. If they were a good company they would recall this but they don't have to because it's not a safety concern yet.

Ok Everyone. I'm back for an update. My 2014 3.6L V6 Jeep Grand Cherokee fixed itself!! No kidding. it seems about three weeks ago I realized my jeep never cranks long to start. Fires right up like a new car. Hot or cold. Even if I've been out and about city driving doing errands. Stopping and starting. We haven't touched a thing. I'm about to hit 90K miles. Starts right up!! Strange Strange Strange. Go figure!!!

So it wasn't an issue with check valve bleeding fuel back down towards the pumps? If the vehicle isn't having issues while running I find it hard to believe that only replacing the pump and aux pump would fix the issue. Seems like the Jeep should call for pumps to pressurize the lines when you get into the car and not when the button is pressed. My Jeep is at the dealer right now for this same issue and it's not having any fuel issues while running just firing up every once in awhile. Seems like it's a bad seal somewhere hence the loss in pressure.

@@ayexcite5324 No I have a lift at home but didn;t have time to check it out. Had dealer replace both pumps. Should've just been a bad check valve or seal. I told them I wasn't paying the whole $1900 they wanted because I troubleshot it myself and they were getting more out of me than they needed to

I just bought one of these second hand. Ive been fixing some issues and happened to see this video. Mine was very low mileage (30k miles) and fuel pump seems to do fine. Im curious as to how long was the cranking time for that fuel pump issue you had? More than 2 seconds? I want to know to easily identify the issue if it happens to me.

I have the push button start and mine would occasionally fail to start on its own and require a second push. I doubt its a "common" problem, but I really tend to overthink issues like this when they come up.

My 2014 is doing the same thing. When the car sits around 3to4 hours the Jeep GC long cranks anywhere around 2 to 5 seconds. Sometimes it won’t start, but a second try it starts right up. Question, if you don’t replace the fuel pump and the car occasionally long starts, does it damage the engine or main components? Or is this just an inconvenience?

There is none. It’s part of the pump.

I have a 2014 GC with 3.6L V6 Pentastar and oddly enough I have a long crank to start about every 10th time I start the car. It always starts after about a 2 to 3 sec. long crank. Other times it fires right up instantly. Even Cold starts it starts fine. I'm thinking relay. I took it to the dealer and they said it was fuel pump. i balked at the $1600.00 quote to replace it and still driving the car. I'm thinking it might be the relay. This has been going on now for about 4 months. Your thoughts.

I have the same year as you and having exact same problem. You do anything w/ the relay yet? Jeep isn't throwing codes so shops aren't able to tell me how to fix it. Super frustrating.

@@colinbalas2201 Hey Buddy. No...I haven't fixed a thing and it's still going along just fine with a long crank to start about every tenth crank to start or so. The irony is my brother has been an auto mechanic for 45+ yrs and just as this problem was cropping up, he was retiring and moving to Virginia. ( Nooo dont go TREY!! LOL ) When I did take it in to the shop at the dealer after my brother was gone, my brother said not to do the fuel pump replacement yet. He suspects it might be the relay. Now....this all took place last month. My brother is coming back into town and is going to check it out. But in the meantime....I'm still getting around in it.

Anyone else find a remedy with the delay? I have 2014 GC same issues long start very intermittently. But works completely fine with push to start without brake pressed. Once it primes step on break fires fine Everytime. Any help would be greatly appreciated

@@colinbalas2201 Hey whats up. Just came back to check on anyone with their jeep long crank. I have not done a thing to mine yet. Still driving it. it's the same as before. Always fires right up from a cold start in the morning. When I get out and about start and stop a few times, then come home, I go back out about 2-3 hrs later and thats when I get a long crank. So strange. Still driving it.

@@hudekhoustonartist - Yeah I was never able to get to the bottom of it. Largely seems undiagnosable until it starts throwing codes. Whatever it is, it seems costly and I didn't want to get into throwing money at an old vehicle. I traded it in and bought a new truck.

...usually when there's no video or procedure to be found or posted there is an access point the dealers don't want you to know about until later on when a body style is changing ~ in my opinion

Sorry about that. Turns out the fuel sensor level in the pump I got freaks out when the tank is full, so at some point I'm gonna have to drop the tank again and figure that out. I'll try to take a better video when I do. When I shot this, there wasn't any other videos out there, so I was hoping this would be better then nothing. I'll take your suggestion though! Thank you!
