2016 Jeep Wrangler Stall in Reverse, Surge Low Power Code P050B pt. 1

This Wrangler experiences a stall when selecting reverse usually when cold and first thing in the morning. It reported code P050B which does not exist is the service information related to this vehicle. It also surges slightly at steady state cruise. I believe the two issues are related to the torque converter both not releasing in reverse causing the stall and slipping under light load. Here is a link to the Wrangler Forum where this is discussed at length. www.wranglerforum.com/threads...
I will post a follow-up when I get authorization to repair this.

Unfortunately this is a temperature related issue and seems to only occur if you put it in drive on a cold start. I've found if you select reverse it won't stall. I'd suggest to video the problem. Be sure to show the vehicle, odometer and date in the video. Include the start up temperature. Good luck with warranty. Keep us posted...

Thanks for the detailed video describing my 2016 wrangler (80k miles) problem exactly. I also got the P050B code. So far, I replaced the plugs and both cam position sensors. Problem persists but maybe slightly better or just being inconsistent? It is out of warranty. Wondering if I should try changing the trans fluid before just replacing the torque converter entirely?

well the transmission fluid is cheap but I highly doubt it will fix it. I never got to repair this as the customer traded it in. Keep us posted.

I've got this on my 2012 with 295,000km's on it when it's below 0C About $4000 to do the converter and shift kit was the quote. Cheaper than buying a new vehicle that's for sure.

I've done some more research over the weekend. I'm thinking of running a cleaner thru the system and having it flushed as to my understanding there's a piston that pushes the clutches in the torque converter that gums up. Possibly a cleaner and flush may free this piston up. Couple hundred bucks vs $4000 so I'll try it.@@PhillipBailey

This is exactly my issue as well. Although, I've brought it to the dealership several times and they haven't found any issues or been able to replicate but this happens to me every time I start and put into reverse, especially if they Jeep has sat for a day or two. Is it time to get a new mechanic?
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey 2 жыл бұрын
On this on it only happened on a cold start and only if you selected reverse before anything else. I found if you put it in drive first and then reverse it would not stumble or stall. This one also surged in lockup which I believe is related to the torque converter issue. I never got to fix it as the customer traded it in. Good luck.

My customer decided to trade it in. I didn't get to fix it. I'm positive it was the torque converter staying locked up on a cold start. It was also slipping at cruise speeds. Good luck.

I'm having the same issues with my '17 wrangler w/16k miles. The dealership keeps calling me crazy. My brother in law suggested the same thing. Torque converter. Have you found a solution? Are any of the options you had covered under the power train or extended warranty?
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey 3 жыл бұрын
I never got to fix this as the customer didn't want to spend the money and traded it in. If you have the TCC problem I would think that would be covered under power train warranty but they have to experience the condition which you know requires just tge right circumstances to occur. If yours stalls on a cold start when put in drive first time in tge morning you have to convince the dealer to leave it sit overnight to experience the issue. Possibly you could demonstrate the problem to them yourself. This one would not stall in reverse or after selecting reverse first. Good luck with the warranty. Hope this helps.

I have a 08 jeep wrangler 3.8 an it's been overheating but in spurts an blows cold air with heat on decreasing some power as well but when gets warm again not long after the cold air it gains power back we've replaced thermostat temp sensor radiator an cap an the water pump an still having issues any idea of what causes this an the coolant is boiling to the reservoir seems like had pressure as well we've bleed lines multiple an burped it
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you could have a head gasket leak which can cause combustion gasses to enter the cooling system. This causes air to be pushed into the heater core and results in no or poor heater performance. This is often followed by significant temperature swings on the temp gage as well as overheating. Find a shop that has combustion gas detection tools or if you're doing this yourself the tool is not that expensive. I'll post a link to a video I made using mine. HTH

@PhillipBailey

I changed tge throttle body for another used one on this vehicle but it made no difference. I think because of the randomness of the issue especially if you don't drive it exactly the way required to duplicate the problem some shops change a part and think its fixed cause it doesn't act up the next day. Hope this helps you.

So, I see this was posted a few years ago now and that you never had the chance to repair the vehicle. I now have a customer's 2016 wrangler with the similar issue however his main concern/complaint is the vehicle randomly has a no start issue on top of randomly stalling on him at a traffic light or when going into reverse. Do you think the no start could be related to the torque convertor issue, or do you think i am looking at 2 separate issues? Truly appreciate your feedback.
@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey Жыл бұрын
If by no start you mean no crank, I seriously doubt its related to the torque converter problem since the vehicle would be in park. I'd think you're dealing with two separate issues.

@@PhillipBailey My apologies, cranks but no start randomly. it will just do the extended autocrank and not start for the customer. i have yet do duplicate his no start at this time but he complains about it stalling at traffic lights/stop signs occasionally also and mentioned the lugging when it is put into reverse.

Somewhere deep in the internet I found information about that Mercedes transmission. Apparently there is some sort of issue (and excuse my ignorance - I am not a mechanic) in which when the transmission is not in operation (over night or something), there is an issue with the torque converter getting fluid based on a design flaw. Some sort of air-logged issue. I saw a video in which some sort of plate was modified to allow proper fluid flow which solves the sticking issue during cold operation. Again, I know nothing about transmissions, and what I am saying might not even make sense. All I know for sure is this particular torque converter has a design flaw. I think this is why even after owners have the TC replaced, this issue returns in short order. If I can find the website with the information K will post the link here. @@PhillipBailey No problem. I just had my first stall on my 2016 this morning in 35F degree weather. I also noticed after a cold start, the first few stop signs I stop at bring my RPMs down too low when I am at a dead stop. Only 56,000 miles, and the trans had its fluid changed at 45k. Always babied. Very upsetting.

@PhillipBailey
@PhillipBailey 3 жыл бұрын
Scan it or have it scanned for any codes especially in the ECM and TCM. Try to establish if there is a pattern to the stall. IE only when below a certain temp, only on cold, warm or hot start, only when selecting drive or reverse. I gather you have no warranty on this so you would be paying to fix it... unfortunately there are other possibilities for a stall when put into gear other than a torque converter hanging on problem. Monitor data in the engine computer on a cold start. Be sure the temperature sensors are reading accurately as well as the barometric pressure. You could also clean the throttle body and do a throttle relearn. Good luck
