Well the upshot was that all seven of his selections lost and if that wasn`t bad enough, he also gave the winner; Almandin, "no chance" ! His friend; Bob Gardiner, gave the favourite and it lost too. Well they are out there Barry. Interestingly, I am possibly the biggest fan of Barry Browne. Barry is two wins from two since coming back from an injury @ 7/1 and 5/1. I will send you the link. Not as good as collecting on him last year Crier ! I tipped him on youtube and he was my only selection ! Mr Fastnet gave seven selections and all lost. He still hasn`t paid Jimmy the five hundred Oz he owes.

He's not without a chance but I can't see him winning it again with 56.5kg or 57kg, which I think he'll probably get. The handicapper probably missed him last year as he was only lightly raced. He still is but I don't think the handicapper will miss him this year. Was a nice first up run though Barry.

AnotherFastnet70..Yes your right about Almandin,it will be tough to win again..Im still thinking about Makybe Diva..Think Big..Rain Lover who able were able to do it,not that Almandin is as good a stayer as that elite lot,and the fact that hes an 8years old..But that he did beat Hartnell by a good space and the rest of the field a long way behind him gives me some hope..plus i dont think this years field will be that strong..Anyway ive already taken a big price many many months ago,,so i live in hope....I dont discount the 3 New Zealand contenders either,they could shape up..

I think Hartnell is just about the horse to beat in the Caulfield Cup. You would imagine he goes that way as it's pointless going to the Cox Plate again where he would be facing Winx and besides if he were to win he could then run in the Melbourne Cup and not get a weight penalty

Oh yes Barry I'm quite certain of that with regards to the goose. Gingernuts would be a good show, as is Bonneval. Waller has stated Egg Tart is not on a Cups campaign, which is strange. I liked her to run very well in a race like the Caulfield Cup. Her form is slightly superior to Bonneval's form in my opinion. I see Almandin got 56.5kg, which is about right. He's a lot closer to some class horses now. Hartnell meets him 3kg's better than last year and he's within 1.5kg's of Order of St George, if he makes the trip.

I agree with everything. Melbourne Cup is overrated because weighting system discourages best stayers from coming over and competing. The Arc is arguably the best staying race in the world. To attract a big field MC won't ever become WFA. But horses like OSG should be weighted to attract them to MC. Otherwise, those good horses will stay in Europe to run in Arc.

Unfortunately, the aussie battler or underdog image has been a part of the MC myth since Archer won the Cup after supposedly walking overland from Nowra (south coast of New South Wales) to compete in the 1861 Melbourne Cup. In fact he travelled on the steam ship City of Sydney. Aussies love it when a 100-1 chance wins or first female jockey or a jockey wins the race just days after his brother dies in a race fall. These unlikely events keep feeding the MC myth. That's why the MC is more loved than the Cox Plate which is Australia's best WFA event. So, good horses are weighted out of the cup so more unlikely horses win the race.

The people who know anything about horseracing value the Cox Plate MUCH higher than the Melbourne Cup. The Melbourne Cup will NEVER change from a handicap. Why tamper with Australia's most successful race ? If it aint broke don't fix it. There's been talk of the Caulfield Cup becoming WFA but most don't want it to change either. If the Caulfield Cup was changed to WFA you would need to change around the dates of the whole spring carnival. You couldn't run the WFA Championship race, the 2040m WS Cox Plate, a week after a 2400m WFA Caulfield Cup. That's in the too hard basket. We already have a 2400m WFA Grp1 anyway, the $2 million BMW/Tancred Stks at Rosehill. It's run in the autumn too which only helps 3yo's and 4yo's compete against the more seasoned older horses

In his previous prep Tarzino was a Grp1 winner at 10f. He also had a very nice turn of foot at the end of his races. He appeared to race more "dour" in the Turnbull Stks and his start prior (Underwood Stks) ie he didn't have the same turn of foot at the end of the race and was thus exhibiting tendencies like he was looking for further, like the 2 miles of the Melbourne Cup !!!
