The 2016 Olympics are set to begin in just over a month in Rio de Janeiro. As the city prepares to receive an influx of international visitors, it is building new infrastructure and transportation systems to accommodate the surge. But the city is also undergoing another major project: hiding and removing poor people from view of foreign onlookers. I went to Rio to see how the city is transforming to make way for the Olympics

This is how the entire world works. How things seem is always more important than how things are. Suppose you work on the bottom rung of the ladder in a retail job for a big company. Your supervisor is one rung above the bottom, with his own boss 2 rungs above bottom. All 3 of you are unimportant in the greater scheme of things. Think of the corners that get cut and the turds that get polished when your boss is preparing for a visit from his own supervisor. Think of the resources that are taken from places that aren't currently under the microscope in order to get a pass mark. Maybe extra staff are put on for that one day and your store runs on the bare minimum for the rest of the week, treading water. Now remember there's at least 20 more rungs of the ladder to climb before you're at the very top of the company. If there's that great of a blatant conflict of interest on the very bottom of the ladder, what kind of stunts are being pulled further up?

1.5 million people live in Rio’s favelas. The total spent on the rio Olympics and was $13 billion (A significant Portion was tax payer Money). So if they would’ve taken the money spent on the Olympics and gave it to every favela resident, they each receive a check of $8666.

And I definitely think it would have been far more economical to repair the broken North Zone communities. In the long run, this would give a greater return to the economy too as these people would be valuable contributors to the workforce.

None of those are a big problem in Rio, the real problem is corruption. Millions of dollars for building roads, bridges, funding the police force end up in a pockets of corrupt politicians. If Brazil tackles corruption and focused more on public infrastructure the country would be a better place. Also mafias rule the streets of Rio, they will kick you out of your own house if you don't pay them. Public works projects and calling the military to take care of crime could do the country good.

Can't really blame them most of the time. Those slum people aren't just poor, most are lazy bums, Rio been building buildings for them to live so they could get rid of the favelas, most of the time it works, they already got rid from a lot of them, but some people just ruin everything. Since they have to pay for water, energy and this kind of stuff, they turned the building into another slum, they started splitting the rooms with wood and selling them and would build more favelas around it.

That's a pretty scary thing that you amongst all the people who liked your comment are many actually think this way....sounds like y'all are broke in spirit, knowledge, wisdom, life...and many other meaningful everlasting qualities. I'm from the state of Rio de Janeiro - whose capital is the city of Rio - and our governor has recently asked the people to stop saying bad things about the state and the city on the internet. Instead he is advising us to post pictures of the beautiful parts of the city and say positive things to attract tourism. This is how bad our political class, our social justice, our public health and education are. So bad the government has to ask the people to stop spreading the news worldwide.

looking back at this, what really angers me (as a Greek, too) is how the Olympics have been completely transformed from something that merely had to do with sports to something that's directly linked to money, influence and an area's appearance. I adore Rio. I feel like it could even be my second home, if I ever chose to move out of my country. And it disgusts me how the country's own government doesn't care. That's nothing new, really; most countries worldwide favor money over actually helping their people but, in this case, they have enough audacity to disregard Brazilians so... obviously.

As a Brazilian I'm gonna tell you guys the truth, Rio is one of the most beautiful places in Brazil, however is one of the most dangerous too, Rio's police is the most violent *in the world* , a lot of hospitals were forgiven because of this stupid Olympics, don't even ask me about the world cup. I'm from São paulo, I love Brazil in all aspects, but the corrupt government of this country is letting Brazil into a hole. Sometime ago the brazilian people got FURIOUS, then the truckers from all the country stopped working, the country went into a caos, the markets were running out of supplies, animals from farms were dieing without food, all the prices were getting so high, president was trying to do a lot of deals, the gasoline prices increased from R$3,60 to R$4,80 (sometimes even R$5,00 a liter). As I said, I hate this country's government, and if it doesn't get better I'll get the f*ck out of this place.

Because its suppose to be an international game and having the host city change internationally goes a long way to drive home that point. Most of the Olympic games were hosted in the US or Europe and a lot of people in other country are already resentful of that fact. Another solution would be to make it so people won't make such a damn big deal about the games (at least financially) but there is just too much profit to be made by the rich and powerful. There's also no international regulatory entity that can do anything about it either and certainly not one where profit isn't one of the primary motive.
@abiikr4773
@abiikr4773 8 жыл бұрын
That's understandable, however it will still be unfair as that location only will benefit from the Olympics. The Olympics is bigger than just an international sporting event, it attracts tourists (while where there's tourists money is generated). So for instance if there's a permanent location in a place such as Paris, only the French benefit from it. That therefore causes conflicts, weakens unity in the world and etc. With all of that said perhaps a remote area with no governing body directing it is a better idea.

It's a recurrent problem all over the world. It has taken quite a grim turn in Latin America, but it also happens in the developed north. I have been doing some research on the matter and the majority of the authors from all areas (sociology, politics, art, architecture and even economy) point out that the phenomenon have existed since a long time a go, because it's the physical manifestation of inequalitywithin the built environment, and inequality is a characteristic of societies. Even the nordic countries have inequality, but not in the same degree as Latin America or even the USA. Going back to the topic at hand. The authors I have been studying, point out that inequality and illegal settlements got out of "control" since the 1980's, under the Reaganomics and Thatcherism policies that imposed the neoliberal agenda and therefore increasing inequality.

In a different way, the poor doesn't exactly live in the city, see if you can survive in beijing, you are guarenteed to be kinda well off. Instead of poor people, beijing covered up two things: air pollution and petitioners. They shut down factories in cities around beijing and pretty much jailed every petitioners. They also banned private cars in beijing during the olympics, and since factories were closed, the rural migrant workers went home so tourists won't see 'poor' people.

Hey we have this in our city as well! In Legazpi City they walled away a shanty town which was renamed Victory Village after the Embarcadero was made near it. Classic sweep under the rug and spray with cologne technique.

Brasil has always been like that, ever since europeans discovered our land everything that left to us were corruption, lies and racism, i live in recreio, that is the neighborhood beside recreio and the bus line is great for me, everything from living and moving around in public transports is great for me and thats upsetting because I'm the minority, and its only great for me because everything i need is around the area, these thing shown in the video, we learn this at school and not only the ways of taking poor people out were like that, there is one they use that is making reach people live where poor people live makes the place more expensive so that they are forced to get out, brazilian parents mostly want their children to get out of the country bcs there still has such a dense corruption in the government that we cant even predict when its going to be at least cleaner

If the government wasn't corrupt, sometimes acting to be better can actually make them better. If they act like a tourist spot, they get more tourists, they get more money and eventually it becomes a tourist spot.
