Serena Williams announces she will 'evolve away from tennis' after upcoming US Open

Serena Williams has announced that she will "evolve away from tennis" after this year's US Open to focus on "other things that are important to me."
In an article in Vogue, the 23-time grand slam winner said that, although she will try to win at the US Open, it is time for her to move "in a different direction."
"There comes a time in life when we have to decide to move in a different direction," Williams posted on Instagram with a picture of herself on the cover of Vogue with the title: 'Serena's Farewell...I'm terrible at goodbyes.'
"That time is always hard when you love something so much. My goodness do I enjoy tennis. But now, the countdown has begun. I have to focus on being a mom, my spiritual goals and finally discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. I'm gonna relish these next few weeks."
The announcement comes a day after the 40-year-old won her first singles match in 430 days.
She played her first singles match in over a year at Wimbledon in June, losing to France's Harmony Tan. Afterwards, she hinted that she could play on home soil at the US Open, which begins August 29.

Novak Djokovic targets Pete Sampras' year-end world No. 1 record in Vienna

While unable to edge closer to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the grand slam leaderboard in the second half of the tennis season, Novak Djokovic is chasing one record that could see him outstrip his rivals.
Djokovic needs to win just two matches at this week's Vienna Open to end the year as world No. 1 for the sixth time, equaling Pete Sampras' record set between 1993 and 1998.
The Serb is currently tied with Federer, Nadal -- whom he lost to in the final of the French Open earlier this month -- and Jimmy Connors on five year-ending No. 1 accolades, securing them in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2018.

i think it also has to do with the fact that pete retired early and tbh,players at that time do retired early because it was difficult to maintain the same level for longer periods.

@@rayadisurya7343 there are various reasons for that. nowadays athletes have personal trainers with really advanced health care systems which helps them in their longeivity and also they have become more concious about extending their careers. for eg- rafa missed the wimbledon and olympics keeping in mind the longeivity of his career, earlier players used to play every tournament and their body ultimately got exhausted both mentally and physically and also the various analysis helps. with the help of analysis you can change your ways of play a bit to shorten your time spent on court, various biomechanical analysis helps to avoid career ending injuries.

I met Sampras through a friend at a country club in Los Angeles that his kids play at, around 3-4 years ago. I (25 y.o at the time) would drive up in the afternoons or evenings and play an hour with my friend (X) who was a trainer at the club. X has no tennis or sport history, never watches sports, he just works out and has a very high level of charisma. X had a few famous clients and everyone at this club knew X, yet X had no idea who these people were. I would say.."X, that's so and so from this movie and that movie and this movie." X would replies "Bro Who? Him? Bro.....I train him sometimes... he is in bad shape bro but he drives nice car." Well one day, X was talking to someone through the screen and X turned and asked me. "Bro, my friend Pete is going to hit with us ok...he plays tennis too". Most of the time, an older member joined us and we'd just play for fun, these guys were all loaded I was just a guest so I was not in a position to say anything but "Sure!". So in comes walking Pete Sampras! X mentioned after we hit that Pete would come up to the club regularly to drop or pick his kids up who had lessons there. I was not prepared for the moment but I remember thinking *what do I do? what do I say?* as we walked to one another to shake hands. (I used to play a little in college & had a fair ranking in juniors in USTA so I was more than star struck and I could produce some good rallies). It was odd but I felt small around him, it might have been bc of his accomplishments and legendary status, but I am 6'5" and idk how to describe it.....he had a presence and I was in his shadow. As he was lacing up, X was telling him this nsfw last weekend story, and I was biting my tongue bc this was Sampras and my friend has no boundaries, but Pete was laughing and as he got up I said " you know....we aren't very good" and Pete said "hey I appreciate you letting me jump in. No pressure, we just hit until I have to go". I had one of the best hitting sessions, even though it was for 5 min, in a long time. There was so much power and net clearance and he was reading our shots so well he barely needed to run, he was always positioned perfectly. We hit with Pete a few more times after that, he is an all around friendly and nice guy. I met his kids and his wife too. His family was super humble and everyone seemed so happy, his kids were always smiling when they ran to their dad after their lesson. He asked what I did and what my parents did for a living and we talked about how our parents emigrated to the US, it was very easy to carry on a conversation with him. I learned a lot just speaking to him and we had great conversations on the evolution and history of tennis and we exchanged some crazy life stories (I have no social media so I believed there was some level of trust there). It seemed like he had no stress at all, I didn't see ego or pride, he was just a dad picking up his kids and getting to hit for a few minutes before his kids were done. His life was on cruise control, didn't matter who he played with, and he was just focused on being a good family man.

No. Greatest second serve in tennis. Ivanisavic had a better first serve. Second serves matter, and so he won alot. His biomechanics f9r serving are the best in history. As an overall server, only Federer comes close. Federer is a better spot server. Sampras would struggle today with the much slower courts, including Wimbledon. Even when they slowed down Wimbledon in 2004, 2005, Federer hit 50 aces in the final against Roddick. In 2018, 2019 Wimbledon is green clay. Sad really. They use bigger heavier balls as well.

still remember watching him play as an 8 year old. his calmness, modesty and character on the court, along with his incredible touch and beautiful gamestyle were a joy to watch. 20 years later im so grateful to have witnessed one of the greatest sportmans who made me fall in love with this game and pick up a racket in the first place.

Parents of pro tennis players need to be wealthy to afford coaches, tournaments, driving, equipment, club subscriptions and all the other costs when the player is a junior. My parents could not afford individual coaching for me and my tennis level quickly fell behind my peers whose parents could. Anyway, my point is this wealth also gets the kids into better schools. It’s only in the soviet bloc countries that you got poorer kids doing well, as the government paid all their costs. Also some of the best tennis players I know are thick as bricks. Intelligence is not a prerequisite.

hitting water bottles is easy. I'm suprised more players dont locate their serves better. thats the main thing that seperated pete from the crowd.. serving big mph with the accuracy of a. great mlb pitcher like Kershaw. as they say in pitching he had gas and he could paint. Pete understood that concept of command . most pros still try to get it in somewhere close but pete understood a few inches either way meant an ace a service winner a weak return or some one shitting on your serve. compounded over the course of a match this mentality and focus of his was lethal. i don't know if it was by design or instinct.

He was the best overall server. Hitting average close to 130mph serves. Federer is the best spot server though, and his stats prove it. Sampras had the best second serve in history. That won him alot of titles. Great clutch server as well.

Not even close to best server. On faster courts he still made less aces per match than some other players. He also served and volleyed which means he will make more aces since players have to guess which side he's going to serve since they can't rely on hitting a deep slice to the middle as is common nowadays.

Watched Pete burst onto the scene and I agree Pete had a very heavy serve. One of the best if not the best. I'm talking in his prime. He kind of changed the game with the big serve. This was when the giants like McEnroe, and Connors were on the down slope of their careers. Definitely a clutch server when it counted.

Sampras is really likeable guy here. Completely at ease and having a good time. One of the greatest of all time. If he had kept playing he probably would have picked up two more Slams. He didn't care. He set out to accomplish his goal and he got it done. He didn't have anything to prove after that. What a career!

i think if there were more competition to really push him, he'd have been motivated to play a couple more years and extend his slam lead. Andre was a great player and a nice rival, but he didn't *really* bother Pete at slams too much aside from Australia.

There's injury, mental and physical fatigue in slam finals, etc. We can already see how several players have the potential to beat Alcaraz - Medvedev, Sinner, Rune, on their day could beat anyone. Alcaraz will need his immense talent along with a crap ton of luck along the way in order to get to that 24 number

2015 was the dark ages of Rafa....he had struggled with injuries and struggled to find his game again...people forget he had near career ending knee injuries and that's why he was so bad in that year. But when he's healthy, he's better than Roger, and arguably better than Novak, certainly the most dominant display of tennis when he's at RG.

Love this man. King of his Era and GOAT contender. Coaching might not be the right fit for him since hes a dad and more about the home life but Pete would make a hell of a mentor for an up and Comer, or a champion like Novak when he first became #1 (which he sort of was). Hail the King of Swing!
