20160130 "new" hens and "old" hens

Our existing flock was down to 3 hens and a rooster, so we had room for some new additions. These are 5 of 9 hens that were dropped off at the garden center as unwanted. Our neighbor brought these to us and kept the other 4. This is a bit of the "getting to know you" period, with some pecking order business. Unfortunately, we don't have a space to keep them separate during the initial introduction period.
The new hens look like an egg laying hybrid, very much like our Golden Comet hen. Unfortunately their beaks have been trimmed significantly and I don't think they're going to grow back much. Three of them are pretty small for their supposed age of 2-3yrs. Given the sad state of their back feathers, I'm guessing that they were pretty overcrowded previously.
Hopefully the new dynamic will settle quickly. The periods of calm are a decent length, so far. As a bonus, the new hens seems to understand the rat proof feeder that our old chickens found mystifying. Everyone's also enjoying a treat of bird seed and some chopped greens, so there are plenty of edible distractions.

Always the best way to introduce new members...is by night time...put them in the roost in the dark ....that way they will settle down all nite and by daylight.....an easier transition is yielded more friendly reactions. IF you do it in the daytime....the fights will break out... Keep them separated until nite time...But they have to establish PECKING order.....and they will get some battle wounds as long as it does not go on too long.... what I have always done is take the aggressor of the fight and soak them in a bucket of water to good and wet....and put them in a rabbit cage for a few hours...to calm them down...works every time. Does not hurt them at all. But they will forget all about their anger and concentrate on drying off and fluffing their feathers and so on. Sometimes a fight involving more than two aggressors and others....is to spray them with the water hose until it breaks up...if starts up again...spray them again...eventually the fight will be over...and a CALM will be all over the yard. SPrinkle some feed around give them some dandelions and clippings to scratch thru...VERY HAPPY brood. Trust me.....this works very well and safe for the birds.

They need mutch bigger space so they can find different food,and Get more exersise 😉

You need to add some patio blocks so those hens can bottom out that ratproof chicken feeder. Not designed for a bird to wobble around up in the air!

one question: I've had 5 hens and 1 rooster so far yesterday i introduced 1 more to the flock. there was some pecking fights but nothing crazy but the new hen is just hiding in a bush since then and only comes out when need to feed and drink, any idea on how to remedy that??
