MotoMan drives the G30 BMW 5 Series for the first time in Napa, California. He starts with the most powerful variant currently on offer, the 2017 BMW 540 with 335 HP from a BMW Twin Power Turbo inline 6 cylinder engine. While he does eventually get to the Ultimate Driving Machine part of this BMW, he starts out with a party trick that is new to this country and ends with a second one - this one a world first - but tests it out just steps away from most world operating systems were developed - crossing the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco . . .

I truly believe in the 5 Series and I can highly recommend this vehicle since I own a 2018 BMW 540i. It’s very high tech and roomy plus all the safe features that BMW is famous for in this sedan. My BMW technician told me that the six cylinder / eight speed transmission is the best combination and reliable, set up that he has ever seen in his 20 years with BMW as a technician. It makes me feel very happy with my purchase of owning a pre-certified BMW, which was a lease vehicle but I decided to just purchase at the end of my lease. I highly recommend (G30/B58) 5 Series !

Having been an Audi owner for some time while my wife has owned a 3 series, the debate has raged in our house for a few years (never considered MB). More recently I bought a CPO 2014 328xi Wagon and have been impressed with all of driving manners, ride, handling braking, etc. Last week it went in for service and I was handed the keys to a 2017 330i. Having driven it for a couple of days now I am absolutely convinced that BMW may have actually reached perfection with the sports sedan. In every regard, that car is near as perfect as an be. NVH, suspension tuning, power, interior design, infotainment, ALL of it PERFECT! So to answer your question, if the 2017 5 series is anything like the 3 series then the answer can only be BMW and not either of Audi or MB. PS, I live in N. California and have owned Quattro and now xDrive cars. So my choice would be a 540i xDrive.

MotoMan!! Nice review amigo. Coming to your final question, I havent experienced a V8 5 series but i drove a glorious 1989 535i with a cheeky straight-pipe exhaust and lord o lord, did I find jesus. That I-6 sound so damn amazing. Keep it up!

I used to own a 2003 540i with the M-Sport package and I've regretted selling it for years. She was a money pit for sure, but when she was right she was so so right! I'm currently in the market for a G30 540i, hence why I watched the video so to hear you compare the G30 to the legendary E39 lets me know it's definitely worth getting.

you´ll be disappointed. Because it looks like they are moving what we know as the 6 to a new more luxurious 8 series to compete with the S class coupe and the 6 will be what it was the 5gt

Wrong, it is likely the 6 series will be a smaller sports car and the 8 series coupe will be the mid/full size coupe

That was the initial rumor but from what I have have read lately it seems that it will be as a I said. Because spy photographers have said that the new 5gt actually has designation 6 also the f12 6 series debuted on 2011 and bmw´s life cyle is of 7 years so the new 6 is due to the next year. By this time we should have already seen an early prototype of that "new lightweight smaller 6 platform" if it was true but all we have seen is that gt atrocity. Im not speaking from what I want it to be but from the information I have seen about the subject, of course I would much preffer a smaller lightweight 6 to compete with porsche, a true drivers car, but sadly that doesnt seem to be the case anymore.

The new 6 will just be a new 6. The 8 is just a 7 coupe in the same way a 6 is a 5 coupe

The new Ls 500 is going to do that remote parking thing and more from what I have read up. That's a cool feature especially when parked in tight spots or from a garage. I won't though Park my expensive bmw or Lexus in a tight spot before one lunatic messes up the paint job. So I guess it'll only be used by most from garages

Thank you for an exellent review! I am living in Sweden and ordered the 530D with the M-sport package. I did discard the Mercedes E350D due to the lack of space for the legs (sideways). The midconsole is to wide. The Volvo S90 D5 is a 4 cylinder and to expansive for that engine. You could think that the 4 cylinder concept is for Volvo and not for the customer and the environment. The downsizing is more a way to make the production process more efficient and to cut costs for Volvo.

Texting while driving is actually quite safe compared to messing with all these multimedia features in cars nowadays. I think this all went out of control already. I mean you cannot use your phone while driving but you can use your tablet wich is built in dash and your phone at the same time.

10:13 Nice 01 E39 540i6 Sport same here but I saw a 99-00 540i6 Sport blast down my main street chirping 1st to 2nd hard It was moving out. This was before Bmwfilms with Clive Owen.

Any Idea, when the diesel will be arriving? Also would like to see you explaining the complex hybrid mechanism in 530e and how that translates to driving feel in a BMW, which has to be the ultimate driving machine in every class it competes.

Great review. I am actually shopping for a pre owned low miles 2015 750li and then... I stepped a foot into a BMW dealership and took the fully loaded 540i for a drive. What an incredible car!!! I like the 2015 750li price tag and spacious interior, but I love the new 540i's technology gadgets and power. Decisions 🤔

Motoman, everyone is waiting for the 530e this summer so you have to do a review of that asap. That is the game changer and volume car here. 70mpg, same hp/lb-ft as 530i all at a $200 premium. The avg BMW lease is 36 months with a 10k mile allocation annually. If the 530i averages 26/mpg combined and you max out your lease miles that is $1200 in gasoline (93 octane) annually. The 530e will cost $442 in gasoline annually maxing out the same lease miles. That is almost $2300 in gasoline savings over the 36 month lease. And that assumes that oil prices stay depressed at

Wow! Just wow! M, this is episode is just stunning … a work of art! The videography, the editing, the music & the scenery are just perfect. Bravo, Bravo! (stands up & claps) #Masterpiece. Is having to stand that close to the car while it parks itself is part of the NHTSA deal? From what I have seen, you don’t have to stand near the car in the European models. My closest encounter to a midsize V8 sports sedan was my father's BMW E38. Not only I saw Jesus, I got hooked into V8s & got my ass grounded! I'd do it all over again if I could… totally worth it. think I mentioned that story before . . . :) Of that bunch I'd definitely get the 540i! However I prefer to wait & see the new 540GT ... Or if the rumors are true 640GT. That said I really want a 550i, M! Can't you make an exception & hook a brother up? Just this one time . . . :). #SaveTheV8 You know me, I'm a Cadillac guy & 5 months ago I would've told you I'll have to break that rule & pick a 3.6 CTS Instead. But the 540i is just sooooo good I'm not sure I can pass it for the current CTS. What would you choose, M? Ooh and speaking of the E-class. An E400 with a V6 is available outside the US. We get it here.

As a BMW enthusiast and 5 series owner, I will always choose a Bimmer over any Volvo. I've owned an inline 6 cylinder 330 and an 8 cylinder 5 series. The 8 cylinder was a joyous experience with power that was reminiscent of a jet with its smooth power delivery. I have yet to drive the turbocharged 4, but I'm sure it's nothing like the 6 or the 8 cylinders for obvious reasons. Although, it's still a BMW and it would be a good bet that it is more than capable even with its small displacement. The hybrid is where the smart money will be spent (I'm considering that model) but my heart is saying "stick with the turbocharged 6". We'll see!

Ian Bailey I drove the 4 cylinder turbo and it's nothing like the naturally aspirated 6. It's good but it doesn't deliver the power gracefully like the 6. I had to keep looking down at the logo on the steering wheel to remind me that I am driving a BMW.

Ian Bailey the turbo 4’s are fine. Reliable good gas mileage and fast. The 4 cylinders 330, 328, 528 and 530 are always bmws most sold cars and most reliable. I’m doing 60 in my 2013 f10 528 and the car revs under 2000 rpm year under that at a steady speed it’s extremely quiet. I would never recommend a turbo 4 in a x series

Enjoy your reviews. I've driven the AMG E43 and the 540 xDrive. I preferred the BMW. I've decided to trade my 2016 Dinan stage 2 M3 for a 2018 M550i xDrive. Yeah, it's a sign of aging. Mid-NJ

Juan, the AMG E43 is a good car and was nice to drive. I am just more familiar with BMW and Audi so all Mercedes vehicles feel a little weird to me. That's the beauty of cars and taste, preference is subjective, there's a car for everyone.

Id choose the BMW because I like BMWs and because I find their combination of HUD + iDrive + safety tech to be the best in the business. The fact that its a turbo 6 doesn't really bother me. Id rather have the V8 but you said to not include that. I don't like touch interface for driving so that rules out the Volvo and the Mercedes is nice but their interface is behind BMW and its just not quite my style, though both it and the Volvo are great cars and would be great choices so long as they fit you best.

Dad used to have an M Z3 Roadster, an e36 328 and an E39 M5. He's got the new 7 series now and he loves the technology, but he misses the rawness of the manual ///M vehicles.

Currently have an older E320 Benz, but in the market and I definitely plan to go back to a Bimmer. I loved my E34 5-Series. I certainly think V8s are overrated given the smoothness of BMW's straight 6's - and given the power everyone's getting out of such engines, they seem to perform quite well. (The G30 540 is about as fast as the E39 M5 was!)

Really good for underground car parks on the continent. Owning a Coupe with long doors, it hard work getting in/out once parked. I always ditch the kids and wife before I reverse in, but still hard work to get out. The is would be actually useful.

I just did the BMW driving experience today and drove all the M cars. I have a 335i F30 and with a tune the car is super fast. Driving the M5 the car literally has too much power you are just fighting it. Would love to step into the new 540i and throw a mild tune on it, lol maybe Im just getting old.

got a 2013 530d xdrive touring mpack. amazing car. about to replace with a 2014 Alpina B3 touring (410bhp) now that kids have grown out of buggys (space requirement). find the 5 series is a very big car for european cities...

Just seeing this now, but I can answer your question about what I'd choose because it's a decision I had to make. I had ruled out Volvo because they're simply too touch screen based (I hate trying to click the right thing on a touch screen at 70 mph on Massachusetts roads as my arm moves like I'm a bad symphony conductor.) To be honest, it was a pretty easy choice. I sat in an E300 first, and drove it. Beautiful car, but the seats really hurt my back, and of course, it was pretty anemic with that 4 cylinder engine (I'm not saying it's the joy killer that 80's 4 cylinders were, just that it wasn't my thing.) So I looked at an E43 AMG. I was suspicious. 6 cylinder engine? In an AMG? I went to a local dealer that had one. The uber-smooth salesman warned me that, "Once you drive this, you're done... you're going to buy it on the spot." Hrmmm... I drove it, and somehow managed to not buy it. The seats, again, hurt my back, but more concerning was that the engine just felt like it was underqualified to be on a car with AMG badges on it. AMC would have been fine, but AMG, not so much. The shifts were jerky, the engine strained. Although the infotainment was nice, I was disappointed. A couple of days later, I test drove an M550i. Not picturing myself as a BMW kind of guy, I expected to be underwhelmed. I wasn't. I really enjoyed it. It felt much larger than the E43, but due to having gobs more capability under the hood, it was much faster and capable than the E43. The biggest con for me was the piped in engine sound, but I know it's everywhere these days. I configured mine online and started shopping around. My M550i, in the same colors you have here, is being delivered in November.

after watching this review I'd have a way tougher time choosing between the 5 series and e class. I like the interior of the e class a little better but I like the exterior of the 5 series alot better.

Gotta say, as much as I don't like how similar the Mercedes sedans resemble one another... It would still be a tough call. Friend of mine has a C450 AMG, and it's got a sweet engine. Applying that to the E-Class sounds like a winner. However, the inline six in the BMW is undeniably a great one, too. I'd probably lean on the 5-series side of the equation since it is newer, and prettier to my eye. No S90 for me - I kinda need to have the sportier driving feel (hence my current choice of transportation).

I would pick the 540i over the E43 even though I'm a Mercedes fan I hate that you have to get an AMG to get a v6 in the e-class, as a result you also have to get a stiffer suspension and sportier design on the side which is kinda bland compared to the e300.

I can't decide if it's a combination of shadows and camera position but the car looked as if it had flat tires on the drivers side at roughly 4:00 on the straight ahead shot...clearly it didn't have flat tires but just weird, the car looked like it was leaning over a bit

The BMW is my choice I simply can not live will the double display in the e43 - love the sound in the Merc but inside I prefer the way they did the c class I am told this BMW engine is pretty good with fuel consumption Is that true? and how did you find the sound in this G30? In the M240i it sounds great and I think that this kind of car should be quite in comfort mode and sporty ( both the drive and the sound) in sports mode Btw I live in Sweden 🇸🇪 and I have driven the BMW 540i 4.4 V8 E39 a long time ago - great sound 🔊

That parking with the huge key is such an expensive gimmick that will be fascinating for 5 minutes...then it becomes a useless feature that you will never use. That key is a very expensive option, and adds another thing that needs charging (like people don't have enough things to charge already...), not to mention the limited pocket space most people have. BMW could've put it into an app on the phone (like Tesla), but they just want to make that extra $750.

A smart buyer for this car would also skip the $190 gesture control...like the giant optional key, it will be interesting and used for a couple times then become a useless feature (buttons on steering wheel or knob on dash definitely get job done faster). Definitely spend the money saved from those useless feature on equipping the car with Apple CarPlay for $300.

I'd choose this very car with the cross spoke 20 inch rims on the 530e displayed at the launch during the NAIAS in Detroit, because nothing works as well as a BMW Straight Six. By the way, I'm getting one later this year.(Pretoria East, South Africa)

In Russia there is this stereotype that BMWs have week chassis (hope I got the translation right). Basically the idea is that it starts to break down very quickly if you are driving on bad roads. So I'll take E43 if I'm in Russia but BMW with smaller turbocharged engine if I'm in SF My two cents

The only thing thats bad with turbos is that they lack the finesse of throttle control compared to natural aspirated engines and no more LSD unless you get an M car, if anyone has driven a 1990 535 e34 with LSD remembers how controllable that car was .

I'd go for the e43, kinda like what Mercedes is doing these days! Currently drive a 3 series E91 325i 6 cylinderTouring. Does a 2009 4,2l V8 Quattroporte with 420hp qualify :-D? I love it, is my weekends family car. Oh and btw, greetings from Luxembourg Europe (best place in the world, only 100 miles away from both N'ring ans SPA). Great content, and this years (and especially this videos @4:00min and 6:20min) shots look sweet, great improvement. Pit

Can you get the new 5er with a different ambient light color instead of getting blue? BMW's ambient orange looked so much better in their previous cars....And I thought that BMW had done extensive research on light colors and choose orange to be their signature interior lighting color not simply just for looks, but because their research suggested that orange ambient lighting was more soothing, and less harsh on the eyes. Blue is kind of on the opposite spectrum of wave lengths....

There should be several choices of color. I believe one is the standard BMW orange. Another is a slightly lighter bronze color, then there is blue and I think purple also. Also note this is just the accent color for the trim not the color for the instruments which remains BMW orange.

People seem to get awfully emotional over the number of cylinders a car has. In some cases, you'd think the suggestion of a 4- or 6-cylinder engine in a car like this is somehow impugning their manhood. Personally, I couldn't care less how many cylinders a car has, if it performs well. It's 2017... engines are more efficient than they were even 10 years ago. I'm wondering if some of the angst over fewer cylinders is based on experiences from a decade or more ago. This video asks specifically about the 540i vs the E43 vs the S90 T6... in point of fact, I'll be leasing a new car next month, and it's currently between the 5 series and the E class. The E43 is out, because I simply can't justify the price. So it comes down to the E300 vs the 530i or 540i for me. I haven't test driven any of them, but if the 530i or the E300 don't feel underpowered *to me* then I'll have no qualms about getting a $65k car with a four-cylinder engine. My deciding factor is about 75% looks and features and 25% performance, anyway.

I presently own both, BMWs 2.0 and the 3.0 (B58). They are both fantastic but the 3.0 un-freaking believable! If performance isn't a major priority, don't even test drive it. And if it is, don't test drive if you don't want to pay for it because you won't want to live without it.

Why is it the 5 series always has been more desiresble than the 7 series? Whereas A8 is superior to A6 and S-klass to the E-klasse aswell for me that is. Am I the only one who thinks so? And the anwser to your question Motoman is E43, silver coloured to be exact, Tony Soprano inspired color choice. ;) Mercedes like a boss.
