Time sure does fly.
I have now completed one month of the six month Dopey's Challenge training plan.
It's the ambitious, 48.6 mile - four day run through all four Walt Disney World theme parks.
Week four of 26 brings a 5.5 mile training run on the way to the Marathon distance of 26.2
I also go over where everyone should be if they're training for the Disneyland Half, Disneyland Paris Half, Wine & Dine Half Marathon and Superheroes Half Marathon. Training for the WDW Half and Princess Half Marathon Weekend begins later in the Fall.
I had to replace my broken Scosche Rhythm+ Heart Rate monitor.

This was a frustration week struggling with my visual impairment and Stargardt disease and the settings on my cameras. I use a GoPro Hero 4 silver and Feiyu Tech G4, Hero 5 Black and FyT G5 and Sony a6300 for my video journal and to help me "see" what I can't while I'm training and running races.

"Focus on the training, not the video." WORD. I'm digging the content, and the quality keeps getting better and better, but don't let it stop you from getting some good sessions in! ...You know we'd watch a whole video of just bloopers, right?

More bloopers please 😀. Way to keep a smile on even with the struggles of the week. I was thinking about following the Hal higdon's plan for dopey, but with all the excitement of everyone starting their Galloway training a month ago, I didn't look at how long the plan was and started right alongside the rest of you...but with the tougher plan....talk about mistakes haha.

Funny that when most people think of running, it;s put on a pair of shoes and go. They have no idea how much prep and gear goes into it. Love the video.

RezRuns it's funny, I have been working on the same thing in my life in a way...I get super defensive and anal about anything I am attached to not coming off perfect or with zero flaws (mainly with work stuff). And yes, my google name has changed 'perfectly' lol as I am working on launching a side business venture and my own vlog to go with it...and I am still stumbling through how all of this stuff works, hence my needing to let go of obsessing over the little things. I am working on a mash-up concept to be able to talk about some of my favorite things and incorporating the products with it instead of just the same old boring "ok now this is nice and this is what it does"... most of my friends and family think I'm quirky goofy enough to have my own reality show as it is, so maybe I can channel that into my own channel haha.

I really enjoy the videos. The fact that you can do the training and all the hours it takes to a 10+ minute quality video is so impressive! Some days I feel like I'm barely surviving my MCM/Dopey training life as a first timer. So I enjoy logging on to see what you are up to as a little distraction for myself! You rock!

Another fantastic video (bloopers are my favorite :) and my heart soared that you mentioned me!! Thank you beyond words. One bit of foodish advice, speaking of nutrition, that I give my students, is to drink coconut water after a run. It's incredibly hydrating, choked full of antioxidants, vitamins, electrolytes, low in the glycemic index AND it helps with swelling from the heat and the humidity (oh those lovely sausage hands we all get after the first two miles). My favorite brand is Harmless Harvest because it's cold press (unlike Zico and VitaCoco which are heat pressed) and it taste like you just cut the top off a coconut and drank it. Thanks again for another inspiring week and all the amazing work you do to get these videos out to us!!

You're most welcome. I know it's not easy to do work, family, friends, training AND a weekly video. I'm impressed with what you've accomplished on your smartphone. I started with a cheap ($299 ish) GoPro hero 4 Silver and have slowly built my arsenal over 3+ years. I'll be watching. Love the Yoga tips. And ... i WILL try the coconut water.

I just bought a cheap GoPro esq camera, so wahoo the sky's the limit. . .once I watch some video's on how to use it. (Bless you 20 somethings on KZfaq and your tech knowledge). Can't wait to figure it out once it arrives. Let me know what you think of Harmless Harvest (I'm almost certain they have it at the Publix). Pro-tip. . .put a bottle in the freezer, for a refreshing "icee" style drink for later.

Great job with your videos! I have been switching between your Goofy and Dopey training videos as I ride a stationary bike on non running days. I truly appreciate all the work you put into these videos. You help keep me motivated during my Goofy training. I also visually impaired and know the extra challenge with running. I am blind in my left eye, since birth. No depth perception makes it a challenge with sidewalk runs and a stigmatism when I am tired adds the challenge to everything jumping around. I have never let this stop me from my goals. I am glad to see you are not letting you vision stop you from your dreams! Keep up the awesome work!

I hear you on the struggles to get up early and out the door! Indiana heat and humidity is awful in the summers. I can't seem to get my teenagers to go to bed before 11:30 when school is out so I am often up way to late!! The Dopey runs aren't too demanding right now but things are going to have to change in the next month as runs get longer. My Frenchies don't like the humidity either so our walks are pretty short right now! Great video and running!

Ahhhhh ~ the joys of Summer running. LOL I am so far behind on my Virtual Running Shorts. I was (am) hoping to get the first two done for me and Spanky this coming week, but I totally agree with you about the heat and Frenchies. He is limited to 15 minutes. I can see him start to wobble with heat exhaustion 10 minutes into his morning walks. Poor babies. They just can't handle it.

Hi there- just discovered your channel after hearing your interview on athe Let's Run Disney Podcast!-- these are fantastic! thanx so much for all your work on these- wow- so well edited and I can tell you put in a lot of tie to make them! ! I've been running for about three years now - I am 90 percent blind in one eye- full vision in the other eye- so very different situation than yours, but still found your story inspiring and fascinating..I did Dopey this past January, training for Hartford Marathon this October --running it for time to get a good corral place for next years Dark Side at Disney in April :) Happy Training!

Thanks a lot. I still haven't heard the podcast.... but I guess I participated so I should remember how it went. Thanks for your kind words. It sounds like with the problem in your one eye ... you get it. Close one ... and you know it isn't easy. As I'm legally blind in both eyes... I have little depth perception ... so I'm sure it's a problem for you too. You need both eyes for depth and those darn 3D glasses. Good luck with the Hartford Marathon ... you know? you only need a 10K for PoT for the Half marathon Challenges. I wish I could find a good one near me ... I"m sure I could crush a 10K time better than a Half or Full. See you at Dark Side in April.

Were you a bit surprised they "found" more bibs too? A bit weird. Maybe, if they didn't put them on sale so early! LOL I know it's sometimes hard to find anyone in a corral or on the couse... Instead I've got to ease my way back to running for the rest of summer with the hope that I'll be back to running in time for the race. Congrats on the 1 month!! Considering the wine and dine half marathon, it's a bit of a splurge this late in the game but I really do want to try it. If not, there's always next year! I'm in week 3 for the trifecta of half marathons in Spring 2018 (the bittersweet back to back half marathons). The weather has been killer! If I don't do it by sunrise, it's not happening because of that rain hitting us! I've actually lost a couple of days and had to attempt treadmill runs, but those hours long runs on a treadmill bore me to death. My chest strap pooped out after a few years (I'd been using one that pairs with Garmin) and decided to borrow a friend's un-used apple watch and have been loving it so far! I didn't know about some of the wrist inaccuracies, maybe I'll split it up with an arm heart rate tracker and see which one is more accurate. Love the video as always! Especially the bloopers. We're only human! Good luck with the healthy eating as well!
@RezRuns

Thanks Sabrina. I wouldn't "Sweat" the outside versus treadmill. I've actually been thinking of buying one to beat the heat. I've become a slave to the app and tracker data... I think I like seeing the miles go up. There's no real distance tracking with a treadmill. OMG .. those 3 back-to-back Halfs! Ugh! Good luck with that my friend.

I made the same mistake and thought it was "Dumbo Double Dare" Disney got sneaky and changed it to "Disneyland Double Dare." In Fact didn't even notice until someone renamed a Facebook Group that I'm in. With that said I'm glad you're doing Wine and Dine, I've snagged bib for that one at the San Diego Half Marathon (Run Disney Booth Gilt me into signing up). Keep up the good work! You're already doing much better than some of us around here, I am struggling to get up before sunrise to run and end up using a treadmill (Yuck) Let's plan a meet up in Orlando for the Wine and Dine. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE INSPIRATION!

Crazy ... I didn't know runDisney put booths at other races. They usually sell out so quickly ... AND this one was "sold out" for for so long. Since, I'm only doing the Half ... my plan is to try to meet up at the After Party. Hopefully... you're staying an extra night. I think it's the easiest ... since we're all so busy with friends and family ... fueling and reunning over the long weekend. I agree. Sometimes I just hate mornings. I'm such a gadget geek though ... I am always weighing ... new camera (one hand) ... treadmill (other hand!) LOL

New subscriber, here! Your videos are fantastic, and reflect a LOT of time and effort in the editing studio. I came over from Derek Ralston's channel. I live outside D.C., and I'm training for my second Marine Corps marathon this fall, but I'm dealing with a few chronic injury issues (mostly plantar fasciitis) that keep me constantly humble :-) I'm a single-mom of 4 kids, so figuring out when/how to do the training (especially in summer when I can't leave the house early because my kids are all still asleep) is a big challenge--but one that I don't let stop me.
@RezRuns
@RezRuns 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ruth. I am flattered ... and I totally bow to you! I don't know how you do it. You're a Super-Mom and your kids need to know it. Balancing everything really is tough. The fact that you are tackling your second Marine Corp .. Wow! I've chatted with a few others doing the race. I may have to sign up one of these days. Do you have to be former or current military? As for PF ... I know it well. I was lucky my bout of Plantar only lasted abou t5 months. I ran several races through it all ... and now (permanently) wear PF inserts and heel cups out of fear it will return. The advice that helped me heal quickly ... walk around barefoot. The motion (in the house) allows your feet to stretch and flex naturally. Google "Toe Pose" stretch. It's basically where you sit on your knees/calves with your toes bent under and down. It's hard to hold ... but the stretch works. The ice bottles and tennis balls really work too. Good luck with your training.
@ruthwilliamson862
@ruthwilliamson862 7 жыл бұрын
And I also bow to you! I can't imagine running with a vision impairment. I just love to see other people overcoming whatever difficulties life has thrown their way! I agree that balancing everything is the big challenge. Near the height of my training for the last race, I told my kids, "I don't think I'm going to cook again until after the marathon,"......and it was still more than a month away! But everyone, including the kids, was totally supportive. I'm really blessed. The PF has proven to be my biggest challenge, by far, as I've had it for over 2 years now, and it's become "chronic." Even when I quit running for a year (and gained 15 pounds to prove it!) my other foot developed PF, so it's now bilateral. So, I've decided that I'm going to have PF no matter what, and I might as well keep running, keep my weight down, and enjoy running any way I can. This upcoming fall marathon is my first try back at the full length, in two years. During that time, I have tried the shoes off thing, and the minimalist shoes, and the maximalist shoes, and every other "shoe thing" possible, as well as the tennis balls and water bottles. This week, I'll start trying your Toe Pose stretch, and add it to my regimen! The Marine Corps marathon does not require that you have previous military service, as I do not. It's a great course that takes you past all the DC monuments, as well as through Georgetown, and the Pentagon, and finally winds up at the Iwo Jima memorial. The downside is that it's hard to get into (lottery.) But I got in this year, so it's not impossible. I think about 50% of the lottery registrants get a bib. Good luck training for the Dopey Challenge. I know my PF can't handle so many miles at this point, and I've never run a Disney race because of the $$$, but the Dopey looks like a BLAST!

... just getting back to the replies. (sorry for the delay) I will def .. have to look into the Marine Corps as I look for new adventures. Keep me up to date on the PF. It really sucks. (nuf said.)

I have a tendency to curl my toes and grip my shoes when I run and walk. My running shoes are a whole 1.5 sizes larger than my street shoes, which helps, but I still curl. The 5 and Dime was in Massachusetts. It used to be a Runners World event, but now is put on by another company.

RezRuns yes, I think PHM training does start in October (officially), but I'm trying to get it in gear before then. Keep up the great videos! It's inspiring my mom and me to keep with it. She just ran 11 miles for the first time in her life - now I've got to manage to catch up with her lol.

Your videos always give me such a surge of motivation!!! You're also the reason I'm running the Disney Princess Half Marathon in February (I really hope I see you there)! I'm at a time in my life where I really needed to get up and be excited about doing something. I was wondering if you could tell me what apps you use during your runs? I'm having trouble with my pacing and it's hard for me to keep looking at my watch to time myself once I'm in the "running zone". Keep up with the training! You always do such an amazing and inspirational job!

Love your videos, Gerald. I have that Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo challenge coming up in September, followed soon after by the Wine and Dine. (Might see you there.) The Castle to Chateau Challenge medal looks great and getting it in WDW is going to be sweet. Then I have the Dopey in January (Might see you there as well.) and the Princess in Feb. Then a break for a while.....maybe something in California for the Coast to Coast.....maybe... My training plan?.....just keep running. My electronic devices? I have an iPod shuffle and some headphones.....that's it. Training in the heat?....I'm Scottish anything over 65 F is getting hot and anything over 75 F and I'm walking :)

These Vlogs are great! I live in the UK and just got back from Disney Florida. While I was there it was the wine and dine weekend and I so wanted to do it but I couldn't. So now im looking at going back to try the Dopey challenge. Keep up the hard work ( as a viewer you don't realise some clips take 2 or more takes to get the right shot) Bloopers was a great idea. Are you going to come over to Paris and do the castle to chateau challenge?

Nice video! Thanks for all the perspective on training and preparation. These help keep me motivated. I am training for Wine and Dine, and WDW marathon (my first marathon, still questioning whether I can do it). The heat in the summer in the south is killer (FL and SC). Getting up at 5am to try and beat it. Glad to hear you got a bib for Wine and Dine half. Do you think you will be in corral B (like Dark Side) for that race? Really looking forward to cooler whether and being in better shape. I hope your training progresses well and that you keep making more videos!

I am so looking forward to Fall too. Wine and Dine should be fun. Based on my submitted time (02:19) my guess is .. I'll be in the same corral as 2016 ... "F." I think there are a lot of fast runners out there. Hopefully, I'll see you there Jeff. I've planned an extra night so I can do the After Party.

It would be really nice to run into you in person so I could shake your hand and thank you properly in person for your videos. My POT for Wine and Dine was a 10k race (time was a little less than an hour), so guessing I may be a corral or two in front of you for the half. I was injured for both the Dark Side 10k and the half, so my focus was entirely on finishing them. Because of this, I didn't stop for pictures during the races. I was stopping every mile and stretching as directed by my physical therapist. For Wine and Dine, I think I will probably run one of the races (probably the 10k), and take it easy and get pictures during the other (likely the half). How much I stop will depend on the characters. Again, good luck on your training, stay focused on your goals, manage and adjust your plan as needed, and keep sharing your challenges and successes with your videos!!! Hopefully I will run into you at Wine and Dine.

Absolutely Jeff! If you're staying for an extra night ... for the After Party ... that's really when I hope to say "hi" to a bunch of my new friends. Under an hour? Awesome! I would love to find a 10K... in the fall ... close to home... period! It's a struggle. There seems to be more Half's here. .. Most of the Disney races are Halfs ... so a 10K is all one needs. I don't sweat( figuratively) the Disney races any more... to much fun to be had. Kill the PoT races... enjoy Disney. See you at Wine&Dine.

I heard your app say that you had an 8 minute pace for your 6 mile run. It also appears that you are run/walk/run Galloway style. That is an impressive pace. Can you share more on your intervals if you do them, please? My long term goal is to get to an 8 minute pace but right now I'm right around 10 to 10-1/2.
@RezRuns
@RezRuns 7 жыл бұрын
LOL... you've got to love editing and video. That was the app spouting the run pace at the 6 mile mark. I think my average ways about 11:30. I stop to set the camera and walk slower when I'm chatting with the infernal box (teh GoPro.) My typical intervals are 2 run / 1 walk ... for the first 4 or 5. If I start to struggle 1 run / 30 walk. I can maintain a 9:30 in cooler (70-75 degree) temps with those intervals. My advice ... what I do: focus on your breathing in the short walk to lower your HR ~ pick it up during the run. Occasionally I will actuall sprint through a walk segment if I'm feeling good and slow to a jog for the run.

LMAO .. ... LOL ... I can't stop. Well ... at least that low humidity! 85 is still a bit toasty. The humidity is so high here right now ... 85 feels like 105 at High Noon. Ugh!

I wanted to ask you, I'm doing Coach Calloway's run walk and its great. In fact I could never do the distances I'm covering now without it. It's great for stamina. But I would like to get alittle faster. Are you doing any kind of speed training? Are you concerned about your finishing times or are you happy to just finish with a time that you are satisfied with. (I know you sacrifice ALOT of your race time with the video taping, and don't ever stop, cause your's is the best!)
@RezRuns
@RezRuns 7 жыл бұрын
I gigle at "real" runners who poo-poo the interval method. Speed is a tricky thing. You never think you're gettng faster... but if you work on it slowly. You'll see improvement. I can look at 3 years of data and see I've dramatically gotten better. Play with your intervals. I start my runs at 2 min run / 1 min walk ... I focus on my breathing and lowering my HR in that minute. Later in a lon run I may drop to a 1 min run / 30 sec walk. Video work rally slows me down. But on non video days ... I push the run. I am now hitting 8 min/mile and trying to keep my walk pace at 13-14 min/mile. It average out to ab out 10! Crazy ! but I've also found something as simple as an 8 min walk and 2 min ... ALL OUT Sprint can get me to a 11:30 or 12 pace for a Half... like the walk we're supposed to do during Goofy or Dopey. As for times .. I don't worry about times at Disney. I do worry about them during Proof of Time races.

@RezRuns
@RezRuns 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks. That's a tough-one. I struggle with the same thing. Sometimes, lately, I've even been getting calf cramps in my sleep. Definitely ... downward dogs... so some calf raises/lunge walks before you run. I have been extremely diligent with my stretching since I hurt myself in Feb. 2016. I don't rush it. I don't skip it. I've added 2 minutes of deep lunges... a minute of squats and even a minute of planks (and increasing.) Try foot circles (10 left/10right) and 10 pointing up/down. This helps to stretch out the shins. It's an old P90X technique.

Yet another great video! I've had to move my runs indoors due to the unbearable (and dangerous) central Texas heat. Heat indexes of greater than 110 and actual temps of 100+ make me despise living in the Lone Star State. How do you keep yourself from getting bored on your runs? Especially "dreadmill" runs?
@RezRuns
@RezRuns 7 жыл бұрын
Wow that is some crazy heat! Stay safe in TX. I may use your Question for next week's Q&A. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I don't have a tread (dead) mill. LOL When I'm on the elliptical ... I have a great playlist. I actually sing out loud (if no one else is in the house!) AS for on the street... it's tough. Same course9s) .. little vision. I think focusing on my breathing ~ which shots I want to get ~ what I want to say .. all helps me a lot.

Actually the worse part of not liking Bananas is finding good smoothies. My staples are no strawberries and peaches, but I did find an orange, mango mix which is really good. I get you on the heat. I do my maintenance runs at lunch so its 90+, thankfully its mostly a shaded path. But my weekend morning runs are so much easier.

Hey banana-man :P LOL I hear you. Most of the smoothie/Vitamix recipes include bananas. I leave 'em out sometimes too. 90! Lunchtime! You really are a glutton for punishment. Wow ! I don't know if I could handle that... Is that a lunch break/work thing. You must be dripping! Be careful.

I used to be in the army and I found the best time of day for me to workout was lunch. It would reset my day and give me something to look forward to midday...besides food of course. So work gives me an hour lunch, so I just use it for the 30 min runs.

Joe shall henceforth and always be known as banana man 😆 I think he's crazy for running in the heat, but I do think there's something to it because he breezes through the morning runs like it's nothing. I have been struggling to wake up early enough to run in the morning. I would have to wake up around 5ish to be out and back before Joe needs to leave for work so the girls aren't left alone. I have taken our almost 2 y/o out in our jogging stroller, but pushing that thing is brutal. So I run at night, usually 9-10 o'clock. Which has been working for me for now, but doesn't prepare me for early morning calls for the events. So I know that's gotta change soon, yuck. I'm a night owl by nature, so I'm not looking forward to it, haha. Have you considered doing your preparation shots the day before? That way you don't have to worry about the time in the mornings. And because it's what you'll do anyways I personally don't think that it would be inauthentic. I love how honest you are and open about your struggles :) And sorry I keep switching between these accounts and being all confusing... I'll try and stick with posting from just one piece of technology so I'm not showing up as several different accounts!
