The Niro hybrid is the first in an oncoming barrage of high efficiency vehicles from Kia. With combined fuel economy numbers ranging from 43 to 50 MPG, the Niro is the most efficient vehicle in it's class whether you want to call it a crossover or an upright hatchback. Inside you'll find passenger room comparable to the RAV4 and a cargo area similarly sized to a full-size sedan and enough head and legroom for four adults to sit comfortably. Sadly Kia sacrificed AWD on the altar of efficiency, so if all-wheel traction is a must have for you, you'll need to shop elsewhere. For the rest of us the Niro is a well-priced and fun to drive vehicle with a compelling price tag and a long warranty.

Kia is a game changer. Finally a hybrid without a CVT. The base model will sell like hot cakes.

Looks like another good car from Kia. Definitely the most improved car brand of the last 10 years.

They are most improved because they use to be very bad. In that light, yes most improved. However, if you are top of your game most of the time, the improvement would be small. I'm not saying KIA is not high quality, by all counts yes, but it took the Consumer giving them a black eye on sales and reputation to get them in this direction.

Hyundai are Kia's parent company. They bought Kia in 1998 as Kia were just about to go under. Since then they've been sharing many parts and drive trains. But the design and styling teams are very separate and "claim" to be in genuine competition with each other. Kia's master stroke was to hire ex-Audi designer Peter Scheyer in about 2006. Since then their styling has changed dramatically for the better.

I purchased the 2017 Niro EX on President's Day. I traded my Soul, and I'm really happy with this so far. I love that it has a much higher fuel efficiency. I drive 70 miles for work /day and I was filling my Soul every 4 days. The Niro is getting me about a week and a half :)

I have bought one of these. OMG I love this car. I have owned 17 cars in my life and this is number 2 (No. 1 was a Subaru). The fuel efficiency is ridiculous, 50 mpg - yes that's what I get. I am saving so much money with this car, fuel cost down 70%, no road tax in the UK. I have not seen another one on the roads here in the UK - I am looking - come on people this is an amazing car - Oh and Kia as always gives 7 year warranty.

Yeah I am looking at this car as my daily main car since my Subaru turned into a full race car and is very impractical. This is the best bang for your buck car and the prices are actually even lower at Kia dealerships, they have 2020 models with 5 miles or so selling for $22,000 instead of the msrp of $25,000 or more. I think this all has to do with peoples stigma of Kia but people need to realize Korea is a very tech savvy country and where most electronics come from so this inter transfers to their vehicles now a days compared to the past cars. During covid you can get even better deals on these vehicles.

I think it's a terrible way to describe things because it leaves the door open to subjectivity and abuse. 10 different people can see the same thing and define it in 10 different ways. If a term doesn't have any discernible definition, then the term also doesn't have any discernible relevance imo. That being said, when i look at it, I see a crossover ;)

Roman O Niro's design isn’t revolutionary. It's only decent in my opinion. However, having driven Kia Soul for over 90,000 miles and only thing I had to do on it was change a couple of brake pads. I'm considering another kia for it's build quality, reliability and of course now the Fuel Efficiency and overall economy.

I just bought a 2018 Niro Touring, and your excellent reviews played a part in the decision. Thank you for your excellent, informative reviews. On the subject of classification, I consider it a large hatchback car rather than a CUV. I really don't care about classification, though. I only care about how it suites my needs. I wanted something bigger than a standard hatchback, but didn't want to get as big as even a crossover SUV. The Niro is perfect. Smaller size, but huge space inside. I've had it for a couple weeks and it is easily my favorite car I've ever owned, even if you don't consider the excellent gas mileage.

Customer service? I am also trading my Soul which is fun to drive with all the bells and whistles for the Niro what will give me everything I'm looking for in one vehicle (economy, space, technology and appearance). Topic NOISE - Great review. I admire Alex and these in-depth reviews, too. Thanks! What I care more about than the Niro's exact fuel economy is cabin NOISE. My questions are: 1.) Is it worth it to pay more for the Touring model to get a quieter cabin? Does it even make a difference in the Niro? 2.) Would it be possible to put sound-proofing material somewhere in/under the cargo area, around where you might put a spare tire? Do you think that would have a significant effect on road noise? 3.) What about tires? If a model comes with 18-inch wide tires, can a person ask for 17-inch more narrow tires? I would appreciate hearing what Alex or anybody else thinks (or knows!) about how to achieve as quiet a cabin as possible in the Kira Niro. Is there a website or other source of information on this general topic? Again, thanks Alex...not only for the review, but also for this forum.

The public needs to get over AWD. 95% think it makes a big difference in winter (snow/ice/slush), but in reality it doesn't. The percentage of AWD vehicles I see in the ditch or divider in the winter here in MI is worth noting. Put good snow tires on a FWD car and it will run circles around the AWD with "all season" tires. The lateral handling and braking of winter vs all season tires isn't even close. Of course AWD with winter tires is a beast combination, especially for climbing hills. Keep up the great work.

I sat in a Niro and liked it. Were I buying a car now this would be at the top of my list. Compared to the Prius (we have a 2015 Prius) there are things I like. 1) no white bathroom colored accents. 2) gauges right in front of the driver. 3) built in room for a spare tire. 4) taller sitting position. Now let's see what the real world MPG is.
@davetravels9273
@davetravels9273 7 жыл бұрын
Definitely a crossover, gives you a lot more interior space in a much shorter vehicle. From my experience, most people who think they need AWD don't. They would be much better served with a good set of winter tires, especially if you are going to keep all-seasons on your AWD vehicle. From what I have read, the top-end model with the larger tires handles much better, but doesn't take as large of a fuel economy hit as the EPA numbers claim. I think 45 mpg is more than enough and probably worth the trade-off for better handling and breaking performance.

I was looking into getting a Kia Sportage this year (EX or LX, not sure yet) when I started hearing about this coming out. So I want to look at it in comparison with that. I don't do a lot of hauling, but I like the sitting a little higher and because I live in northern Indiana and we get a fair share of snow, I like the higher ground clearance. The 2 biggest worries for me are my size (6ft, 200#) and I fit fine in Sportage size, but not the HRV/CX3/Juke sizes; also, the lack of AWD and its lightness gives me concern for slipping & sliding on roads (especially black ice). However, the features are great (matching Sportage) and the MPG of the Sportage is pretty far down the compact SUV scale so this could save me about 1/2 of my gas bill. Do you think this could be a viable option for my area? Maybe sacrificing some mileage for a more grippy set of winter tires?
@milattx

with AWD, you will still need winter/all weather tires (not all seasons). All AWD does it you to move faster from a stop, but offers no help in stopping.

Yes but no. Yes if you could add them you'd get 234, however peak torque doesn't happen for the motor at the same time as the engine, so when you get to the point that they cross, probably around 3,000-4,000 RPM then the total end up lower than 234

This would be a great upgrade from my Saturn vie hybrid. A whopping 23 mpg average lol. What a hybrid. ... and with gas hitting 1.25 a litre efff

Can the wheels and tires in the Touring be swapped with the FE? If so, should the MPG increase to the FE model?

Trevor S yes you can, and it will add 3-4 mpg to the Touring; the Touring will still be heavier than the FE. I’m basing this on some info from other reports on the Niro. However, if you factor the cost of the swap (wheels & tires), it’s probably not worth it. I doubt it if you can do a swap by the dealer for free.

I would say that a general guideline is... anything that's under 60" tall is a hatchback or wagon. Anything that's over 65" tall is a SUV, crossover, or van (depending on what it actually is). It's the in between area that's confusing. This is 60.4" tall without the roof rails, 60.8" tall with them. So, barely in the in between area.
