This is my ownership review of the 2017 KTM Duke 390. This bike costed me INR 2.68 Lakhs on-road (Navi Mumbai) and is a partner to my 2014 Bullet Std 500.
My review focuses on the factors that I find important on a bike, like pick-up, handling, comfort, looks, tech - not always in that order. I've tried to keep the video as precise as possible, without omitting any important pointers.
Please leave your questions/comments/suggestions as I would love to hear from you fellow-motorcyclists.

Nice video.. is this a good upgrade from the mojo

pav_s2003 pavan Thanks mate. So I'll tell you where it's better that the Mojo - Looks, lightweight, better handling, ABS, better handling, better at cornering and offroading minus the dual exhausts, more reliable overall. The Mojo excels over the Duke on some areas - costs lesser than the Duke, bigger tank range, better fuel efficiency, better exhaust note and company provided touring accessories. So yes, the Duke does excel over the Mojo in most departments.

Loved the video. My take on the bike (I have completed 3000 kms, so obviously have finished the 1st service): 1) The bike is amazing for long touring. The seat is much better than what was on the earlier Duke and this goes for the pillion seat as well. Its wider, provides ample support, is soft enough (too soft is not good for touring opposed to popular opinion). 2) As there is no windscreen (only downside to naked bikes), the windblast at 110+ kmph is huge, almost uncomfortable. Only solution is to lean forward while riding at high speeds since there are no after market windscreens available for now. Leaning forward is extremely comfortable on this bike, no back and shoulder pain whatsoever even after I rode for 4hrs straight. 3) The natural riding posture is not aggressive as many people say (mostly because they have never taken a ride on this bike). It obviously is not as good as a RE, but still better than most bikes 4) There are slight vibrations only in the 3500-4000 RPM range (I can feel it through the handlebar) but on the highway you won't even notice as the time you spend in that band is negligible. The vibrations are noticeable during city riding though. Otherwise, the engine is smooth. 5) The gearing on this bike is better than the earlier Duke. Its not too short. I can sustain 3rd gear at 18kmph, so you need not always shift into 2nd gear while riding in city traffic. I have even maintained 5th gear at around 40 kmph, something which was impossible on the earlier Duke which would vibrate like hell. 6) Mileage is a problem in stop-go traffic. I barely get 20 kmpl in heavy traffic, which is always the case at least where I live (Bangalore). On the highways, it can give 33-34 kmpl if riding in the 80-100 kmph range on 6th gear. Anything more than 100, the mileage drops slightly. I get 29kmpl at 120kmph. This actually is amazing considering the power the engine generates. 7) Build quality is mostly good. Only problem is the plastic used at the ignition key area. Its cheap and sometimes feels like it would come off if pulled. Otherwise, no complaints. 7) People who often go on long rides usually buy a saddle bag. Any 36-40 ltr saddle bag would fit on this bike. Anything more than that is an issue due to the exhaust. Also, it would interfere with the wheel otherwise.

mahesh4561 I wouldn't compare the Classic 500. I would rather compare the Std 500 with the Duke, simply because it has a more reliable, easy to maintain and cost efficient engine. Between the Std 500 and the Duke 390, both are good tourers. Here are the points to consider. 1. Both bikes in their stock form and not touring ready and require basic mods/accessories. The Bullet needs a better seat, handlebars, crashguards, lights, luggage options etc. The Duke would need frame sliders, fog lamps, luggage options etc. 2. Budget. If you fancy riding a little faster, better handling and cornering, and better safety features, then the Duke wins hands down. The ABS is really effective and comes handy when riding on the road. The Super moto mode on the Duke also allows you to have fun while Off-roading. The brakes on the Duke and much superior when compared to any Enfield bike. The brakes on the Bullet are simply not as good. 4. The Bullet however is a very simple bike that has been around for a very long time. You have mechanics in every book and corner of the country, who can help you out in case of a breakdown. From a touring perspective, you will not think twice before putting the Bullet into any terrain, simply because it is rugged heavy duty machine. However, you will definiteky think twice before throwing your 2.7 lacs Duke 390 into slushy trail. Th sum it up, if budget is not a constraint, and you want a really quick bike with loads of tech and safety features, then go for the Duke 390. If you are looking for a heavy duty machine that will keep going day and night and handle any terrain you throw at it, and be economical on tour pocket, go for the Bullet 500. Twizy Monga Thanks Bro.. Nothing yet for the Pillion seat bro. I am going to get a carrier backrest made very soon. Apart from that, I might use a strap on gel seat to add more cushion. But yea, the Pillion seat is not very comfortable. The Dominar definitely has a more comfortable rear seat. The main reason is the cushioning and secondly the seat is not upward sloping like the Duke. But I think the modifications should make it a lot more bearable on longer rides..

Very nicely done video. We have a few things in common - we ride Enfields, are attracted to fast bikes, and both say 'you know' a lot. :) I am in two minds about buying KTM or the Himalayan. After having toured extensively since last few years (from Delhi to Ladakh, Spiti, Gujrat, Rajasthan, Goa, Uttrakhand) extensively, I am looking at something more refined. I love the riding position, clearance, and the price of the Himalayan but worry about the reliability (thought in FI version they have improved). I love the tech in the KTM along with the positives you have mentioned regarding engine, brakes, LED's etc but not too enamoured with the looks (BMW GS310 is more to my liking). Still, after your review, I am leaning towards KTM (your enthusiasm is infectious :) ). I am taking the Himalayan for a day-long test-ride and will be riding KTM soon (hopefully for a long ride). Thanks for your inputs. Rajesh Dhawan

Objective man Thank you for the encouraging words man.. 🙂 Yes, I am absolutely in love with the Duke! It can outperform my Enfield in most scenarios, except a few. It's not the bike you want to ride around in bumper to bumper traffic- the constant gearshift will kill you! Secondly, I have not done hard core off roading on the Duke yet, but she has responded very well when ever I have tried to push it, and with the ABS off she is so much fun!!! Now, I have ridden the Himalayan and can vouch that it is an excellent tourer. I love the riding stance on that bike. It can literally kill any terrain. But then it's not a reliable bike. My friend owns one and he has had to shell out some money to keep her running. I think if you are looking for a out n out tourer, you should wait for the adventure versions of the Duke and the BMW GS310, whixh are also in the pipeline. Another bike you should consider is the Hero Xpulse. The Impulse itself was a beast of a tourer and this new one is supposed to be even better! Spend as much time as you can with all these bikes before you take a decision, because atleast for me when it comes to bikes - it is heart before the mind.. 🙂 All the best and keep me posted..

Ian Henderson Thanks a lot Ian 🙂.. Yes the fan comes on a lot in traffic and you can hear it really well. But then my other bike is an Enfield, and I am pretty much used to the noise 😉. Also, the engine temp drops pretty soon once the fan kicks in..

Did you had any issues with the TFT screen after the rainy days?, some complaint that they had some moisture issues behind the glass. Any heating issues in the hot days? Is it twitchy rider in slow moving traffic?
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 6 жыл бұрын
ripmax333 The TFT did collect some moisture a couole of times, during the rains, but dried up without a trace too. The KTM engineers were ready to get it changed but this was a universal issue with most TFTs, so I just stuck with it. No problems now. No major heating issues, the fan kicks in on time. I have ridden short distances wearing three-fourths without burning my legs 😅 Twitchy in traffic? Not at all! You can dissect your way through traffic without any problems. The handling and torque make this super delightful. The only little concern is that you may have to downshift more than you may like, because this bike just lives to be revved hard!

But I doubt if it is too much more fun to ride than the older duke in terms of raw power. If budget is not a constraint, you must look at the Ninjas, the CBR 650, the Benelli etc.. I see myself going in for an upgrade in another couple of years time.. All the best man!

Wow! For a very steep uphill climb, which will pull more easily? The Duke 390 or the std 500?
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 6 жыл бұрын
Priyanka Patranabish Hi. They will both pull just fine as they are both high on torque. However, the Std 500 has a slight edge for the following reasons: 1. The power delivery is more relaxed as compared to the duke, so you can climb will be more refined. Also, you will not have to downshift too often, as you get a good amount of torque at lower speeds even on the third gear. 2. If you are going with a Pillion, the Bullet is simply a lot more comfortable than the Duke.l, due to the wider and straight seats and the option of fixing a backrest. However, if you are riding single, you are adventurous enough to have some fun on the mountainous curves, then take the Duke. 🙂

The video is very good and provides an honest & detailed perspective of the vehicle. Have you done any modification on pillion seat? Is the backrest fitted? I ride 2015 model of Royal Enfield Bullet Electra. It is my second Electra. It is fitted with backrest and my better half loves it just because of the comfort the pillion seat provides. As such, I have no trouble from my bike. I do the servicing myself, except for some special job like replacement of fork seals, steering head races & bearings, and clutch plate set. Yet then, I am interested to replace my machine with a something which provides liquid cooled engine, fuel injection, dual disc brakes with dual channel ABS, and excellent comfort of pillion seat along with back rest. Till now, I am not able to find any machine which has the above mentioned attributes.
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 6 жыл бұрын
Hey!! No, I hadn't fit the backrest yet, because there was none available in the market. But now Lluvia Industries has launched one and it looks neat. But even then, the Duke 390 is not really a pillion bike..The seat is pretty hard and the upward incline makes it really difficult for the pillion. I'm anyway planning to buy the backrest. I'll share my feedback on it.
@a.k.mukherjee3873
@a.k.mukherjee3873 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reply. The incline that you mentioned is really detrimental feature. In past, I also use to ride Apache RTR 180 (1st. generation model). It used to have incline in pillion seat and my better half complained about it so much that I was compelled to sell it. Nonetheless, I liked riding the bike for long distances. So, how about putting a wedge shaped piece of foam on rear seat. People who do seat modification might be able to do it.
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 6 жыл бұрын
A. K. Mukherjee Foam inserts can be put, but the pillion would still be sitting higher up compared to the rider, and that wouldn't be comfortable. Secondly, the pillion seat is not very wide either. My wife hates sitting on my Duke. 😆 I'm hoping the backrest improves the situation. I think a completely remodelled rear cowl and rear seat is required to make things comfortable. But that will kill the look of the bike...

Nithesh Shetty Hi Nithesh. So there is no issue in upgrading from 13 bhp to 44 bhp if you are a seasoned rider. However, for a beginner, it is not recommended at all. I was planning to buy a bike. I shortlisted dominar, ninja 300, jawa and Duke. Dominar coz value for money. Jawa only for style, ninja 300 just for sake of owning a baby superbike as this would be last time I would be buying a bike and duke for performance. What is your take?
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 4 жыл бұрын
If you want a bike that performs well in terms of power, features and looks - it has to be the Duke! Dominar is a more economical option, but performs really well, and looks good too. Ninja 300 honestly is a waste of money because it isn't close to as quick as the Duke. Likewise for the Jawa, if you want performance and fun in the road, I'm not sure the Jawa can provide it. If this is going to be your last bike, might as well go for the best of the lot!

Shersha Basheer Hey there.. The riding posture on the Duke 390 is pretty much the same as the 200 you are referring to, with the same bars and reat set footpegs. No major difference in the seat as well. So if you didn't find the 200 comfortable, I doubt you'd find the 390 any better. I think the fact that you have better leg posture on the CL500 makes it comfortable. I think you would find the Himalayan or a similar enduro bike comfortable..

MotoScope I was currently watching your Fego Air cushion video. So does that compensate the issue I mentioned? On my Duke 200, I had installed a custom gel seat by Redline Plus (similar kind of installation like the fego) and honestly that too didn't go too well. So I am totally confused and equally in love with the machine.
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 6 жыл бұрын
Shersha Basheer The Fego Air Cushion is really good. I have used it on long rides and I find it very comfortable. However, I think your lower back pain is not really because of the cushioning. It's because of your posture. What you need is a lot more saddle height. The air cushion can help to some extent in raising the saddle height, but not completely. You may still need to adjust the preload on the suspensions to further raise the height. But all that will affect the quality of your ride. I suggest you take a good long test drive first.. And also check out the BMW 310 GS

@MotoScope
@MotoScope 3 жыл бұрын
The KTM Adv 390 falls in the Adventure segment, where all such bikes look very similar. You need to look at your requirement, and not the looks to start with. If you are looking for a proper tourer that can do a bit of off road, the ADV 390 is a great option. You get a higher stance and a better posture as well compared to the Duke. It also comes with traction control and cornering abs. If you are looking for a street bike mainly for the city rides and for touring, then the Duke 390 is a great option. What it lacks is the high stance for tall riders, and a plush suspenion for offroading. If the capabilities of the Adv 390 excite you then go for it. You can work on the looks by wrapping it, adding decals etc..

It has the more reliable engine, is more fun to ride, is lighter and has enormous amount of power, and comes loaded with best in class tech. You may need a few accessories like panniers, bash-plates, gel seat etc. The Dominar is a good bike too, but the Duke is just better. For the city rides, I would say Dominar, because of the better mileage it would give you. But if you are not worried about the mileage, then the Duke is your bike!

Since you are from Navi Mumbai. How's the delivery and booking experience at the Vashi showroom and also the service quality at the Seawoods service center? Also, is the bike usable in Mumbai traffic daily commute. Heating is fine as long as it doesn't malfunction. Do let me know. Thanks!

jararacain The deliveru was pretty quick, within a week. Just that my RC is still stuck since Aug, but that's an RTO issue. The seawoods service centre is good too. I've heard its one of the better ones in Mumbai. But it would always help to do your own research and not buy everything the service guys tell you. Yes the bike is usable in traffic. I have used it and though it does heat up a little bit in bumper to bumper traffic, the heat dissipation is good and it shouldn't give you an issue. I have also don't about 45 mins of moderate ofroading on my duke, and it didn't heat up or malfunction at all. Overall it is a real fun bike both in the city and on longer rides.

Hi. Go ahead with the upgrade - you will face no problems whatsoever! The Duke has a spacious seat with enough space for a man your size to move about. Plus, the foot pegs are rear set, whixh means that your legs are resting in a comfortable position. In Fact, with your height, you would be able to take perfect benefit of the contours on the sides of the fuel tank. It is a very comfortable and fun to ride. Go for it!

Am planning for this. I am 193 cms tall and that's the issue. Once had a Duke 200 2 years before and that gave me Coccyx pain post 50 kms ride. So is this the same kind of seating or is better than that?

For backrest during touring get a tail plate and top box.
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 7 жыл бұрын
Vykier Yes, that would make perfect sense for touring. However, I do a lot of city riding as well, and a top box would make it really bulky while riding in traffic. I'm looking out for a removable backrest that can be fitted to the same tail-plate as the top box.

What the price of ktm 390 or it is less than bullet 350?
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 6 жыл бұрын
Lawang Tamang No bro it's not less than the 350cc. The Duke 390 costs 2.68 on road at Mumbai. The Dominar would be closer to the Classic 350 in terms of cost.

Anandhu Ram krish Bro, the Duke 390 is an excellent update from the Classic 350. Here are the points to consider. 1. Both bikes in their stock form are not touring ready and require basic mods/accessories. The Bullet needs a better seat, handlebars, crashguards, lights, luggage options etc. The Duke would need frame sliders, fog lamps, luggage options etc. 2. Budget. There is an approx difference of around 1.3 lacs in their costs. For its cost, the Bullet is an excellent tourer that has been tried and tested. The Duke however comes with a lot of features and tech that justifies its price tag. 3. Both these bikes are excellent tourers.. Hope this helps you decide..

On a full tank, you should be able to get 330 - 350 kms per liter? 😂 when you say depends on how you ride, I think we should tow the vehicle to get that sort of mileage 😂😂
@MotoScope
@MotoScope 6 жыл бұрын
Abhilash Hari Lol.. But on a serious note, between 24 and 30 is what this bike gives you on a litre of fuel, depending on whether you are in traffic or on the highway. 330 - 350 would be the tank range.

Yes, it is fine. I am 5'6''. You won't be able to plant both your feet flat on the road at the same time, but the bike is pretty lightweight so its not that big an issue.

Let your wife ride this bike and you be pillion 😁 , But don't customise bucket seat on this . Or Use ktm for Solo ride or short ride and when going for long ride with pillion use RE. see oggf he uses something called as airseat on his rc390.

@MotoScope
@MotoScope 6 жыл бұрын
Rishabh Sharma Good ques bro.. A long ride on both the Dukes will not be very comfortable for the Pillion for a couple of reasons - 1. The seat has very less cushion. 2. The seat is on a slight incline, and when accelerating the Pillion will feel like they'll be thrown off the bike 😉. But then there are mods that can be made on the bike to make it more bearable, like I'm.getting a backrest made for my Duke 390. You may also need to add a gel seat for more cushion. Bottom line is that the Dukes are more of a riders bike. If Pillion comfort is more important, then the Dominar is a better option..

Hrishikesh Dipash For city rides, the RE 500 is definitely the more comfortable bike all round. But when it comes to touring, the Duke 390 is a more fun bike to ride. The Duke has a comfortable riding position, lots of usable torque and it is loaded with technology. The ABS and dual disc brakes are some thing that will be very handy on a long ride. Overall it is a great touring bike. The only downside I see is if you were to face breakdown issues in the middle of a ride, as you will need definitely need a KTM svc centre around. The RE on the other hand is not as much fun to ride, lacks safety features snd tech, but it is a more reliable and easy to maintain bike.
