Thank you so much for this video, I bought my batterie from battdepot for €60, bought some acetone (to remove the glue) from a local diy store for €3.50 and changed my battery using this video to guide me with 0 electronics experience. For anyone not sure about whether they can do this, if you follow the video step by step it’s very simple!!

Thank you for the tutorial. Just replaced my MB Pro 2017 13in battery with your guide. I got a $33 generic battery off ebay and it was the same battery in the video!!! It came with the necessary screwdrivers, plastic putty knife , and spudger. Total capacity after install and calibration was 4758mah. Perfect match for OEM battery. All i needed was a guitar pick and bottle of acetone. Placement of the battery board is important. If not centered correctly, the battery wont be detected. I learned a really good trick. IF you have a glass scraper (with razor blade) moistened in some acetone, it is amazing at getting rid of the old adhesive and saving you a ton of time. Plus it does no damage to the aluminum. Its now a permanent tool in my macbook disassembly kit! The 2017 MB Pro 13 battery is definitely easier to talk off than a 2015-2017 MB12in. That battery and adhesive was nuts!

Thanks to this video I was empowered to replace the battery in my 2017 MacBook pro. While not the easiest thing I've ever done, it wasn't that hard either. I had to pry open the back of my laptop using a screwdriver near the hinges. Once off, the rest was just common sense and a bit of patience. No doubt, I saved a lot of money.

Is it normal that my battery is at 2.2v under the screw ? I got 7.68v when I test the pin 1 and 5, 2 and 4 (With the 5 pin on the left of the battery control board). If you could test it or tell me if its good or not. Let me know !

Can you please make an update video after one year. I have been having issues to find a reliable battery for my early 2013 MacBook Pro in the past two years and so far paid $300 for the batteries from OWC and Denaq. They all last for a few months plus. The previous battery from OWC lasted for 4 month and started having the same issue you have demonstrated in this video. I did all sort of magic, factory resets and nothing helps! Cannot anybody in the US build a good battery in the era of Tesla etc????

How is battery back after replacing a new battery

We use Li-ion batteries in our medical diagnostic ultrasound equipment, specifically the 18650GA cell which is used in Teslas. The life cycle specifications for this and most other Li-ion batteries are: Charging from 100% to 0% these batteries have a life span of 500 cycles. When charging from 80% to 20% these batteries have a life span of 50,000 cycles. I've been working with medical equipment since 1972 and have seen the progression of battery technology going from: Ni-cad to NiMH and now Li-ion. Just and FYI to get the longest life from your computer batteries.

I have the 2017 MacBook Pro 13" with the touch bar at the top just below the screen. Is it the A1708? Or are there different 2017 models which use different batteries? Just want to be sure before starting what I saw you do on your video...

I have the same model and the same issue. Apple would charge me around 400$ for this but I decided to replace it myself cuz I am into tech stuff. I’ll try and will let you know the result! It would be useful to mention in this guide that the battery connector is its own part. Using this guide I removed my battery a week before my new battery arrived, and knowing that my old battery was stuffed I threw it out (lesson learned for next time) along with the battery connector still attached as I didn’t know it was it’s own part. When my new battery arrived I started following your guide again only to realise that I didn’t have the battery connector part and have had to order a new one.

I have 2 a1708 MacBook pro's, one is completely dead with a good oem battery, the other is working great but has a battery that has over 1350 cycles and is going bad. does anyone know if transplanting the battery from one a1708 to another if careful to damage the cell is a bad idea?

My daughter got her MBP battery replaced at her college bookstore for $189, but I think I'll go this route for mine. However, with a bit more engineering (or perhaps a bit less), Apple could have made this process a ton easier.

Hi, I eliminated the mac and changed the accumulator. the old accumulator had blown itself up. Same mac and same accumulator (1708). this was not mechanically a problem. Unfortunately the mac drives up very slowly. the mouse pad and the keyboard do not work anymore, only still the BT Maus and keyboard work. The mac runs also super super slowly. The fan runs permanently. I explained the works very carefully. I installed the old accumulator again, unfortunately again that itself error situation. Have you an idea what I made wrong? BG Rudi

Don't try this without the adhesive remover. I read some guides that said you don't need it. They're wrong. It really sucked. Yes, I succeeded in replacing it, but it was no fun. Thank you Tech Round Up for the great guide.

I had the battery replaced on my MBP 2017 touchbar last week and for some reason when you look at the settings, my machine is still recognizing the details and capacity of the old battery that was removed (which was down to 2800mah and was all bloated when the technician showed it to me) and not the new one (4400mah). Other than that the battery cycle is now 3 and it’s normal, and it’s charging. Technician says it’s a bug on the OS, but I dunno. Paid $150 for the new battery.

apple's $500 fix is basically total lower case replacement, i had this done during warranty, they replace everything the touchbar, trackpad, keyboard and battery, basically everything except for the screen and motherboard.

Where did you get the tool pack to open the back cover?

do you need to add the adhesive from the new batteries? why not gently peel it off so the next battery is easier to replace.

Good vid, but there are so many bits and bobs in the laptop that I could hardly see or understand what specific parts you were referring to as I couldn’t see in the video, the camera was a bit too far away.

I got the same model as this and my battery wasn't charging at all. I was told by Apple store that it had died. The Apple store told me that I would need to replace the whole upper case, that I could not replace the battery. I thought that is complete bull crap because I am sure I could replace the battery. I had the same problem as your MacBook Pro. That battery warning came on and I could not charge it. I think apple was trying to just get money out of me by telling me that I needed to replace the whole upper case. Do you think Would need to do that or could I just repay the battery like you have. Because I had the same problem as you have with yours.

you need to take out the motherboard then the battery because some battery cables are routed under the motherboard.

Be careful when using adhesive removals or diluted isopropyl! Protect your screens with some cloth!!

Just for people to know, you do not need to remove all those screws as well as the track pad in other to take off the battery. Just a few specific ones and you're good to go.

***FOR ANYONE USING MOBILE SENTRIX PARTS*** They Adhesive the cable that goes over the connector. carefully peel it back and it should reach over just fine. I fought with this connector for 15 minutes before realizing it wasnt attached it was just adhesived in place.

Great video. I can definitely do this but I've got two systems in need of repair and I'm not sure I want to spend half a day fussing with keeping the screws in order, dealing with the toxic solvent and aligning the battery replacement. Talk me into or out of it.

Inherited an a1708 recently with a bad battery. I've replaced the battery on numerous MacBooks in the past, but this one makes me nervous. Probably the glue strips and trackpad removal. Apple's own website says it's $199 to replace the battery, it's crazy that people are being told $500 by Apple, something's not right with that. $150 for the iFixIt kit seems excessive, too. If I were inclined to go with the iFixIt price level, I think the extra $50 to have Apple do it and be responsible for any issues afterwards would be money well spent. I know iFixIt is top notch parts there, but I've purchased much cheaper batteries on Amazon that worked fine in previous MacBooks. The a1708 battery is only $50 or so on Amazon as of 02/2022. Any DIYers should consider those options, although they don't include tools other than the two screwdrivers called for. Thanks for this video.

If you already have the tools battery costs around 60 bucks, and the adhesive remover is just acetone.

Annoying that small ribbon is not supplied with battery nor is there enough detail about how to transfer & refit this from the old battery. Had to watch another video to cover this.

The kit is simply too high... $149.99 for kit? I can just take it to Apple and having them replace it for $199 if you're don't have AppleCare and you'll get the warranty from them as well.
