Today's unboxing review is of one of our favorite mid-size sedans of all time, the 2017 Mazda 6. Currently in its third generation, the Mazda 6 represents the ideal combination of great styling inside and out, fantastic driving dynamics, and overall solid reliability. In fact, it may even be our top pick among mid-size family sedans. Yes, it's that good. Our tester is the fully loaded Grand Touring model, but all Mazda 6s come powered by the same engine, a 2.5-liter inline-four with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque.
The base Sport and mid-range Touring trims are offered with either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual, which send power to the front wheels. The Grand Touring comes with the automatic only. Bummer. Anyway, Mazda has also equipped the 6 with some pretty cool in-house developed technologies, such as G-Vectoring Control, which makes turning corners even easier, and the I-ELOOP Regenerative Braking, which continuously recovers kinetic energy as the car decelerates and reuses it as electricity. Pretty cool, huh? But the best part is pricing, with prices starting off at ust $21,945. Like we said, the Mazda 6 is often considered to be perfect. Enjoy the review!

Beautiful car. You will never see a V6 in this car. Most car companies are phasing out the V6 except for larger vehicles. This car is fine with the 184 hp engine because it's not a heavy vehicle, plus it gets great gas mileage.

I have a 2016 Mazda 6, six speed manual, what a blast to drive! No problems so far, still sticks to the road amazingly with good rubber. Power's plenty unless loaded down. Best car so far for me! I would like to see a turbo wagon 6 like in Europe.

Dato Temi I have the 2016 and I love it! People worrying about power do not know Mazda. It's quick and nimble :) it can handle a curve. Nothing sadder than being in a Mazda on a curvy road and getting stuck behind one of those power compacts that have to brake every 2s..... I also get compliments on its looks all the time! I also love the interior.

I'll take my 3.6 litre 6 cylinder any day of the week over this. Mazda had a sweet 6 cylinder in the 929 which was a beautiful car that looked like a Jaguar. They have never managed to repeat the quality of that vehicle. Even had solar air conditioning to keep the car cool when nobody was in it. It was far and away a nicer car years ago that what this mazda is.

Back in the day I had a 1966 GTO convertible and it went from 0-60 in 6 seconds flat. It had a 6.6 liter engine and 335HP. The Mazda 6 does it in 7.0. So there is that. Yeah, you won't have any macho bragging rights with a 2.5 liter four, but it gets the job done for 99% of today's drivers and conditions. I have a 2017 Mazda Grand Touring and I can say it handles like a dream and it is pretty sharp in and out. The wheels are crazy great. It is Midnight blue with light almost white Nappa Leather. Mazda calls it deep mica or something like that, but to me it is Midnight Blue! Not sure what my old GTO got in the way of MPG, because gas was only a quarter a gallon back then so no one was interested in gas mileage. The Mazda sips gas and at over $2.00 a gallon I guess it is a little important. The car had a $3000 rebate and the dealer deducted another $1200 so I paid a little less than $28,000 which is considered a bargain these days. Oh, yeah. My GTO was $3100 out the door. Times have change....

I have a 2016 GT. Surprisingly, the quick-shifting transmission makes up for the 184hp engine. Geared just right to hit that 3200rpm peak torque at every upshift, throttle blips on downshifts.

The car will easily get into the triple digits, which is lose your license territory. How fast does one need to go? In the week before I bought my 2017 6 I needed a car to drive around and the only one available (of course in January) was a 300 horsepower Mustang GT. That was a fun car to drive around - first time I drove a Mustang - but I really don't feel too hard done by with my 6. It definitely has adequate horsepower and it's a hoot to drive. The Mustang just didn't seem very civilized to drive every day. Maybe it's the way I drive, but I sense people's behavior change when I fly through in my 6. I've already had one person try to run me off the interstate, simply because I dared pass them. It's strange. The 6 is definitely attention grabbing no matter how you look at it.

I like how he says "again,". Lol I think a GT version of this sedan in awd with their turbo 2.5 and regenerative braking system would be awesome. Too bad they can't let the regenerative system power the rear wheels independently. ?? Lastly, are the brakes grippy? Just wondering.

are skyactiv engines with direct injection as prone to carbon build up as others? i was looking into getting the mazda6 until i found out it was a gdi.. makes me hesitant. i want a car that wont have to be in the shop every 50k miles to remove the build up... toyotas dont interest me, honda accord is my other choice however the newer models are also gdi engines.

My 2008 Mazda6 made it to 115,000 miles before the engine blew. It wasn't in the shop every 50,000 miles either. It was in the shop for fluid changes and tire rotations. And a brake job after 5 years.... I drove the hell out of it too. I'm taking my chances again with a 2017 Mazda6. If it lasts 8-1/2 years like the last one, I won't complain.

Yes and that one has a Turbo, like all diesels since 2000, so if the US got it 90% of the comments 'they should put a turbo on it' would stop. I test drove a 150hp diesel and it was seriously not, I repeat not, underpowered. Fantastic smooth engine with torque in every range. I still need to test the petrol 2 liter version with 145hp or 165hp to hear what all these 65mph max ;-) people are complaining about. I still don't get it now.

They will end up offering it when they have no choice. Once Kia starts releasing the cars such as the Stinger GT built on the Hyundai Genesis platform the Mazda is going to look like a very poor choice. That is happening this year too. They offer Rear wheel drive and All Wheel drive up to 6 cylinder twin turbo 0-100 in 5.1 seconds 270 + KW and 510 Torque with 5 setting Adjustable suspension from ex BMW Msport team member. Something the Mazda just can't offer as far as driving enjoyment as it's only front wheel drive with a paltry 4 cylinder engine and ordinary suspension. I never thought i would see a day where Korea would offer so much better than Japan. These GT sedans are also far more stylish than the Mazda, it makes the Mazda look ancient by comparison. IT's not just Mazda though , Subaru need to really lift their game too and Hurry up and release all cars on the new Global platform except of course the BRZ though that needs a Turbo engine badly.

Everyone is in love with Mazda , you can have it. The car is behind the times, lack of HP, and only one Engine choice. I’ll take the fully loaded 2017 Chevy Malibu premier with its 2.0 turbo- 9 speed automatic and top of the line Technology. 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds in the quarter mile 14.3 at almost 100 mph along with good gas mileage. Also top speed is drag Limited at 156 mph, curb weight 3,380pounds. So yes, a pretty car ( Mazda) that’s all it is.

Little things.... mostly cosmetic. Mazda just upgraded things in '16 and then continued that into '17 and now '18 too. There is a turbo for '18. The thing you really notice on the '17 model (compared to previous models) is all the safety features they started adding (to the Touring and Grand Touring trims).

The Sport is the basic 6. It's a very decent trim in its own right. The Touring has a few more options (sunroof, leatherette, BOSE system, larger wheels, LED lighting, more safety features, etc). The Grand Touring has more features still like heated mirrors, heated seats, a few more chrome touches, and HUD, and a few safety features that Touring doesn't have. I have the Touring. I got it for thousands off. I love it. I have a power moonroof, leatherette seats (which look/appear to be like real leather really), larger 19" wheels, and some cool safety features like blind spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert + BOSE system with 11 speakers. Honestly, the only things I wish I had were heated seats and LED headlights. But, I bought a 2017 6 with 11,000 miles on it for only $19k.... so that's good enough for me. I love the car. Had a 2008 Mazda6 for 8-1/2 years. Loved that car too. It's amazing how much further they've came in 10 years....

A lot of 40-50k+ cars don't have that so it's not bad! Things like heated rear seats and 360 degree cameras are becoming more common in cheaper cars, but even expensive luxury cars don't have them standard yet so it's still a good feature.

Daniel Draghici I know right! Some of these MB, BMW, AUDI etc, make you pay for heated rear seats. A 2017 Elantra Limited can have heated rear seats. Let alone my 2017 Elantra SE with a tech pack has heated seats as well. Crazy
@iSOBigD
@iSOBigD 7 жыл бұрын
Xavier Urbina Yeah Hyundai and other companies threw those in there and things like memory steering wheel, seat and mirrors years ago while a 50k BMW SUV has only optional memory seats and you have to hold down the button until your seat is in place. It's pretty dumb, but people actually pay for those badges.

I currently own a 2006 Mazda3 and it has been a great car and it is really fun to drive. Is the Mazda6 worth the extra money over a Mazda3 and does it really have that much more room inside? I have the small engine in my *3* but would probably buy a new *3* with the 2.5
@fhm4
@fhm4 6 жыл бұрын
I haven't checked out the interior for the 3, but the main difference is sound deadening and highway comfort, I think. If you love the 3, go for another 3. I think 6 won't be an upgrade for you since it's also longer.. Personally, I want a mazda6 though. Hopefully, I can buy one soon.
@buchajo
@buchajo 6 жыл бұрын
There is a lot more room in the 6 than 3. Had a '10 Mazda3 in celestial blue for a few years and although that car was a hoot to drive it had no back seat. I mean literally... no space. The new 6.... lots of legroom in the back seat. Much roomier car.

Own the car for a few years and you can tell where they cut corners to be able to sell it for so cheap. Not enough sound deadening material, paint quality isn't holding up too well and certain things like my center console lid keeps coming loose so I have to keep taking the thing apart and readjusting the pins. Good looking car but it has it's short comings.

Great review! Your analysis of this vehicle is mostly spot-on. It looks FANTASTIC, however, having driven (2) examples of this vehicle there are a couple areas where the driving experience pales with the competition: interior noise and engine responsiveness. For this class of vehicle the interior sound insulation is lacking. To have such a great sporty-luxury interior and but then have to be subjected to the degree of road and guttural engine noise is out of character with the vehicle appearance. And again, given the sporty/luxury appearance of this vehicle the engine is far too unresponsive to throttle toe-in and sounds very unrefined as well. The turbo 4's in both the Malibu and the Fusion (2.0 turbo) are far more responsive, faster AND sound more refined than the 6. With a little better acoustical insulation and more oomph under the hood the 6 would outshine all the competition you noted. As much as I appreciated the look and feel of the Mazda 6 I chose the 2.0 Turbo Fusion SE over it and have no regrets.

Top trim is not a bargain. $34k is what a BMW 325i cost in 2006. I know that this was 10 years ago, and I know that this car is nearly equal to a 2006 325i. BUT, this is a mainstream Japanese vehicle, and the purchasing power of the average person has not kept pace with this cost increase. I would suggest that the Touring model at ~27k is a far better value, albeit, still out of reach of many people. I currently own 3 BMWS. A 2000 528, a 2003 Z4, and a 2006 325i. I cannot afford this car.

One word: Inflation. Welcome to 2016 (almost 17), not 2006. By the way, the average new car price in the US right now is around $33,000. The Mazda6 Grand Touring's price tag is directly in line with its top trim rivals. But you bring up an interesting point...are mainstream cars getting too expensive? Perhaps.
@TheJeffcurran
@TheJeffcurran 7 жыл бұрын
@ Chris, You missed the point peckerhead. I'm coming from the school of a practical and sensible debt to income ratio of 28/36. $34k is a large amount of money for a mainstream (not premium brand) car. Assuming 20% down (cash or trade), you're financing ~29k after adding in taxes, fees, and titling. Assuming an average interest rate of 6% and term length of 72 months, that's $477.00 per month. Assuming an average gross income of $50k per year, you're looking at a debt to income ratio for the car alone at 11%. In case you're not familiar with the 28/36 rule, the 28/36 Rule states that a household should spend a maximum of 28% of its gross monthly income on total housing expenses and no more than 36% on total debt service, including housing and other debt such as car loans. Hence, my comment that the purchasing power of the average person has not kept pace with the ridiculous inflation in car prices. In this scenario, the Touring model at ~$27k is a far better value, and all you are sacrificing is a bunch of tech options that will be obsolete far before the car reaches it's life expectancy of 11.5 years.
