This is no ordinary head2head. This particular version pits electricity against petrol. The Tesla Models S vs the Nissan GT-R, in no ordinary challenge either. In this video I measure acceleration between the two cars, but how I hear you cry! Well, I put together two very special tests to demonstrate just how quick these two cars are off the mark. One involves plenty of broken glass, the other features some core strength. So which one of these cars will reign supreme? Will the electric charged Tesla Model S take the crown, or will good old fashion fossil fuels reign supreme? Let’s find out.
TESLA FANBOYS TAKE NOTE: In this video we have compared the standard GT-R against the Model S 90D as they are the SAME price. We haven't used the more powerful P100D as it costs half as much again and this video is about which gives you the most acceleration for your money: Gasoline or Electric - so the cars MUST be compared on price! Not power. Otherwise we could have just got a tuned GT-R with 1000hp for the same money as the P100D!

carwow it also doesn't have only 400 odd hp like the 90D. Just because the two cars cost roughly the same doesn't make them comparable performance wise. The 570hp GTR was always doing to take a dump on the less powerful, heavier car. You should have used the P90D even though it's 10-15k more expensive :) in fact if you can arrange that test it would be awesome!

You really have not read the description of the video, have you? They wanted to compare cars which cost the same as it was a comparison of "bang per buck". So obviously they chose the Tesla which costs the same as the GT-R. It has less power than the GT-R even though it costs the same? Well, it was the *whole point* of this video to find out if you get the same power on an electric car *for the same money*.

freibier If the point was determine whether you could buy the same performance from electricity for the money then you only need to look at the numbers. Even a simpleton should be able to determine that the heavier, less powerful car was going to lose before a wheel turned. You can pick up a low mileage highly specced P90D for just over £90k and a highly specced GTR MY17 is going to cost that. It would have been a more realistic comparison from a power to weight aspect and more fun :)

Michael McNamara We already have had "fake sound" for some time now...Your Tesla, someone no doubt has an app for your Tesla to sound like anything you want thru the stereo, V6, V12, V16...jet turbine...Starship Enterprise for that matter.. also in case of an emergency, disaster or black out, a gas tank can be filled in a matter of seconds or minutes, an electric car takes hours to charge ..... and might not always have the availability to charge, that is why gas cars will not die out anytime soon ....at least not Toyotas

the Tesla is a junk full with apps and monitors. this is not a car, this is a cell phone with and electric motor. the only thing Tesla can offer is speed from 0-100. No real road handling, no feedback steering, just a toy for gadgets fans. For the price of this car, you can afford to buy a real one.

Both are the same thing. Petrol, from petrolium is derived from latin words for oil and rock - Where it comes from. Gasoline is the name for the grade of refinement of that oil. Just the same as Kersoene is a lower refined and more suitable for use in lamps. In the UK, we love to simplify things. An american might say this pen is made from Polystyrene, Polypropylene, or Polycarbonate. In the UK we say it's plasic. We tend to use the umbrealla terminology more often. Same can be said for our news channels: In the US, hearing the reporter say "A train car carrying 10,000lbs of sodium hydroxide has spilled." In the UK it would more likely be like "A train crash has spilled lots of scary chemicals.".

martin whats your point, Tesla runs on electricity that is stored in flammable lithium ion liquid, with the battery also containing heavy metals that will easily desecrate the landfill. Its of course, the future, but going crazy for electric cars is a bit absurd. I love Tesla's and would consider myself moderate. I don't think it has much to do with the lovers of the cars, but how polar opposite they are. Tesla owners don't care for speed, although acceleration is nice and something we can brag about as it has the most, just extra. The big thing for a Tesla driver is eco-friendly and in second is self driving. While a Car like the GTR is a gas guzzling power machine. If you want raw power and the sound of it then a GTR is for you.

PolarDarkness wouldn't matter. I raced a P90d in my 2015 gtr and beat it. They are only quick off the line for the first 60-80 ft. After that they suck for speed.

Fun test. But having a tesla without performance pack, should not be compared to a performance vehicle. Try doing Tesla 90d vs mercedes e class. That would be more fair. This is equivalent to comparing nissan qashqai with a seat ibiza cupra.

This was 2016.i just saw him pull a better time in a Model 3 performance than this Tesla. The GTR is pretty impressive for now. I do love the sound of an engine revving but I like a million miles without oil changes better. This decade battery energy density doubles and electric runs away. Kinda crazy to ponder.

Otto Sixpack if I'm not mistaken the batteries come with a ten year Tesla warranty. Chances are you wouldn't have a 90D for ten years anyway.

It is 8 year warranty on the batteries, so after that the car is likely to be worthless. But yes the GTR will drop to and the Tesla gets free electricity. So maybe even?

***** The Launch Control in the GTR allows it to launch at 4,000+rpms in it's power band. Ludicrous mode in the Tesla just allows full power and the Tesla still launches at 0rpms. Then again the electric motor makes full torque at 1rpm. lol

Ludicrous mode is technically tuning and will destroy the electronics in no time. A highly tuned GTR would last longer before the engine is rebuilt... and destroy the Telsa

I happen to know thay electric motors, by design, are good at rapidly building rpm, and with their simplicity, few connecting rods, low reciprocating motion, light-weight, and no contact (magnetism only) in key places, the electic motor can endure rapid changes in rpm better and longer, generally, than a complex petrol engine that works by turning a series of jerky explosions in smooth motion through a laybrinth of pipes and connecting rods.

Jagan Joseph That was for the performance (P90D) model that Tesla claims hits 0-60mph in 2.8 secs. That is not the model tested in this video. Also, the face-lift version of the P90D (which is visually similar to the one in the video) did 0-60 in 2.6 seconds, in an acceleration test drive by DragTimes.

Jagan Joseph That's no denying that both machines deliver great performance for the money. We all know that the GTR delivers the BEST bang-for-the-buck. But a 1/4 mile time of 12.2 seconds is not bad at all for a 417 hp sedan that weighs 2 tons. Sure, the Tesla shines only in a straight line, while the Nissan GTR is also pretty good around the track. But, then, no one would really expect a sedan that weighs nealy 5000 lbs to perform great around a track.

Worth noting - before declaring a winner - that the Model S is a full size family saloon with 5 doors, 5 seats and two boots. The GTR has 3 doors, 4 (cramped) seats and a small single boot. Bang for buck must include these variables, surely?

Never let actual facts get in the way of a good rant. The GTR doesn't have anywhere near the same level of practicality as the Telsla. With its horrendous fuel economy, it doesn't even beat it on range per full tank. So it refills 25 minutes quicker from Empty - the Tesla has a full tank every morning, making "refilling it" on actual journeys a rare occurance whereas using the GTR as a daily driver would make refilling with Petrol an expensive twice-thrice-weekly chore.

Turn the wheel and you'll see how the GTR will corner. Stomp on the brakes too. The Tesla is a family sedan and the GTR is a sports car, comparing them is stupid.

My point still stands. As a performance car the Tesla only one ups it in the quarter mile. Have you seen how low the trap speeds are compared to other performance cars? The Tesla also can't corner, it's heavy, it's brakes are going to be mediocre, and it can't go very fast very long because the car will enter limp mode. The point is that the GT-R is a very good performance car and the Tesla is a very good family sedan that also happens to get to 60 really fast.

I liked this. An honest test for the most part. Only additional thing I'd like to have seen is the overtake test done in manual mode for the GTR. Both cars examples of excellent engineering. Tesla not shamed, Nissan shown to be wizards. If I had the money, I'd have the Tesla for normal road driving, and the GTR for the track. I value quiet and smoothness, I don't mind engine noise but any noise can be tedious if prolonged

one thing you forgot in your cost comparison is the cost difference of the fuel !! where I live (Ontario) electricity is a lot cheaper than gasoline and the gtr is a huge bitch on gas, each equal acceleration will cost a lot less in the Tesla than it does in the gtr !!

Having watched a ton of Tesla Model S drag races and how they can match supercar times, I can probably imagine Tesla making another sportscar or an updated Roadster. But also probably not because they're not interested in that market, yet.
