Previously limited edition only, the Renaultsport Clio Trophy 220 is now available as a full production model, complete with some racy-looking alloys, super stick tyres, plus the same chequered flag DRLs and carbon-tipped Akrapovich exhaust as the RS 16 concept car.
With 217bhp on tap and a dual-clutch gearbox it's brilliant fun in the right situation and we reckon it’d make a proper little track monster, but it’s a car that really only comes alive on maximum attack. You’ll either really like that, or you really won’t.

Not pretty? WTF!? I've never heard anyone say that about this Clio. I understand there's differing opinions, but most people agree this is one of, if not THE best looking hatch/compact.

I have bought a black 220 about three months back and I have to say that the car is great.Was a little bit woried about the gear box,but for normal use and city cruising no problem with a benefit of good fuel economy.In sport and race mode very quick and much better than a manual,when you use the pads of course.In race you even dont have another possibility.The corner speed are fantastic and the sound of Akrapovic is insane,but not sow loud you cant commut on normal daily basis.The car suprised me in every aspect and two months after buying I sold my very loved Civic Type R FN2 championship White edition..Sow I can fully recommend this little beast..:-)

Whar sort of real world mpg you getting, even with the wife driving it like miss daisy, mine only ever showing 26 on the average mpg clock on the car

I've gone one, in white. It really does have a split personality. Very easy to drive in normal mode but switch to 'Sport' and 'Race' and it really comes alive. My precious car was a Fiesta ST which I loved. However, the Clio RS Trophy is noticeably quicker with a far better ride. Also, I think it has the better chassis for UK roads - a greater degree of flexibility. Check Chris Harris's review, albeit not in Trophy form. If anyone has any questions please feel free to comment and I'll do my best to answer them.

what i love about the rs clio is the exclusivity of them. you dont see many of them about its why im debating on buying one. have you got any pointers for me to look out for when purchasing one ?

To add on this, if you want daily it on bad roads more, just go with the 17" rims and tires, it will help out a lot on bumps!

@@_J4CK4L_ Very late response, but yes you need premium 98+ petrol. 99/100+ most of the time. Car doesn't have a fuel filter.

I had one of these for 15 months and getting rid of it is a massive regret. It's gorgeous and is the only modern car to look to have been designed by someone with a pulse. The gearbox is fantastic, I don't care what anybody says. Drive to work chilled out in auto, put it in sport or race if you want to shake a leg. Steering is pointy and precise, I don't know where we got "dead" from. Easily better ride quality than the Fiesta ST I had before it. If you can ony have one car and are a driving enthusiast, it's highly recommended.

I have the red one and I love it. I've read a lot of criticisms about the dtc transmission but there is actually no way to compare the performance of the car against a fully manual version that doesn't even exist. And even if there was a manual version would there be a dramatic difference in performance between the two... I don't think so. The chassis is great and the corner speed just amazing. I love the sound of the exhaust and it's actually exciting to drive with the paddles in race mode. The built quality is for me extremely good. Of course it's not an Audi but we are not on the same budget. Great car, amazing performances for a reasonable price.

You went Flame Red? mate... It's an RS needs to be Liquid Yellow. I'm just kidding :P I totally agree with you, it's a huge step up from my RS 197. And if I'm being honest, the engine start-stop system probably took more time getting used to than the missing clutch pedal. In terms of build quality: I thought the Clio was actually better than the base model A1 ha!

I test drove it today... Its freaking fast and chasis(handling) is amazing! I still dont think I will get one, because it makes me drive too fast hahaa.

I mean, i understand it goes to being your opinion, but in a review saying that this car is not pretty is downright BS. Everyone can agree on the fact that it's one of the best looking hot hatches, it's not dull, it looks mature and fun from outside. Also, pull up your pants :)

As an owner of the original (ph1?) 220 Trophy I'd say you were pretty fair with this review. I did mainly purchase it for track days at which it does brilliantly as well as serving me as the daily driver and at that it can sometimes be a bit naff especially on my Australian roads, and even though the Trophy version of the car came with Renault's 'sports exhaust' it was still piss quiet so I had fitted the Clio 200T Remus Sports Exhaust and now it sings! I have no idea what the Akra's sounds like, but I'd imagine that would be epic - like practically all of their products (I'm a huge fan of there's, if it wasn't already obvious). Not a fan of the ph2's front seats, with that adjustable headrest it just looks weird now. Should probably have mentioned- this was my upgrade from my modded (for track days and b-roads) Clio 197.

Akra is perfect. It's loud in sport/race mode. And the carbon exhaust tips do look very very good.

Having owned a Clio 172 a few years ago but never having driven this car, I wonder how the two compare. I have the opportunity to buy one of these at a good price so any comments would be appreciated.

This car is very good, amazing chassis balance and fast dual clutch gearbox. The automatic offers complete control which is a very good touch. Problem is that it did not give me the same level of enjoyment as the Megane RS. That beautiful manual gearbox, front differential, and insane induction noise really made that car special. Clio also lacks power for me.

Gotta agree with you, it's awesome! Pretty yet tough looking. I absolutely love the chequered flag lights amongst lots of other things. I'd love one of these.

Manual gearbox is old hat. Twin clutch auto with paddles the way to go. Ask Mclaren Lambo Ferrari Bugatti Nissan GTR TTrs RS3 A45 etc etc.all twin cluch auto.

Dual clutch auto with paddles are the way to go. Manual box is old hat from the stone age. Look at Ferrari lambo Bugatti McLaren Nissan gtr etc etc etc, all paddle shift auto. the final evo x 440 paddle only Have a look on the race tracks of the world, manuals are in the old classic races.

Well 6 years now and I’m sure you didn’t delete this video only because you make some money off it ….. the Clio mk4 RS are currently in 2022 sold for more than the new price here in Portugal. And is an icon car now days

I love the look of this, much prefer it to it's competitors, having owned a 182 cup I know Renault make a fantastic hot hatch. However I just can't look passed that DCT. The Fiesta ST is almost as good dynamically, but offers a crisp 6 speed manual.

I love DCT in sporty cars. Used to own only manuals but am now converted. It’s just faster if you go all out and more comfortable in the city when you’re cruising from red light to red light.

The DCT is the facelifted Clio RS Trophy is quite quick, almost DSG levels and the paddles are metal and very clicky, so real sportscar feel to them!

Josh Bacon last year I went to a conference held by Lorence van Den haker (Renault head of design) and he said that only since the fourth generation clio has Renault made profit on it with different strategies such as 5 doors only and auto only for the RS model Cheers

Hi guys The interior looks very cheap and nasty but as I you say it's all about the power and fun on the track. What they should do is make another one like the Renault 19 which my friend had many years ago a good engine married to a six speed gearbox so much more fun cheers Phil

Believe me when I say the interior does look a bit OK(?) but it's clear they at least made an effort unlike the Fiesta ST, which was really my whole reason for not buying that car. Build quality is great for a Renault- there's no shakes or rattles with mine and that was quite a feat for Renault of old. And upon closer inspection the materials are really nice to touch with soft touch plastics everywhere except down below with no one really touches

At 217bhp that is the same as the Ford Fiesta ST Mountune. Would you have a Renault with flappy paddle gearbox or a proper manual?

Unfair comparison, since the 217bhp in Trophy is not an ECU tune, but rather intake/exhaust and injection upgrade. Stage 1 just ECU tuning on an Trophy will get you to 240bhp. So the comparison would be a 217bhp Mountune vs 240bhp ECU remaped Clio Trophy.

No manual! Instant no unfortunately! The whole idea of a hot hatch is to have maximum control and fun, and you just don't get that with an auto!

You do eventually get used to it. I use the brake pedal to modulate the rolling back and forth because it still does that with the DCT. Ultimately, I agree and would much prefer a third pedal, but as a track day car it's undeniably a much faster car and I used to own a clio 197 before this. And the car is still bucket loads of fun, the only problem is that it's usually well past the speed limit... :D

Jayson Hammond Sorry mate but that is absolute rubbish. I drive this exact car and the gearbox is phenomenal. In fact if this was a manual it would spoil the performance and race feel of it. There is absolutely no way I would want this car as a manual. The gear shifts are fast and aggressive and if you learn to brake with your left foot it totally immerses you with the race car feel.

MattSimRacing Dont take it personally mate, just my opinion! A true hatch should always be manual, you are merely steering the car in an auto! The 2018 Megane RS comes in a manual, and even Matt from Carbuyer.co.uk said a true hatch hatch should come in manual! Just my opinion, and many others!

GassedUpUK As I said before, it is purely my opinion! The new Polo GTI will be coming in a manual, so that shows that purist hot hatch drivers appreciate an ancient device! As you drive an auto, I suppose it gives you more time to apply your lip stick, text your friends and eat a cheeseburger at the same time. At the end of the day, auto equals lazy, and demonstrates the real lack of ability to really drive a car, as opposed to being a mere accessory in a machine that does everything for you!

Jayson Hammond Sorry but couldn't disagree more. There is no rule book that says hot hatches should be manual. A manual would spoil the fun of this car and you don't just simply steer the car. I nearly always drive this car in sport or race mode using the paddles. You have to think about what gear you need to shift too just like a manual. In fact in a manual you can go from 6th to 1st in one go..in a EDC you have to go through all the gears and it needs timing perfectly other wise you can shift down too early and over rev the engine. It's a totally different experience but if you use these gearboxes correctly you definitely don't just simply steer it.
