The 2017 Street Glide with a Milwaukee 8 engine could use a little pick me up, just like all Harley-Davidsons from the factory.
Today's video is Part 1 of a 3 part series on performance. In this video I'm installing an HD branded, stage 1 air filter.
I'm also going to break down performance differences between various air filters. If you don't already know there is a breather system in all 1992 and later HD's. I'll break down how that works, while we're talking air filters.
Don't miss the other videos in this series.
Part 2 is on Exhaust: • 2017 Street Glide gets...
Part 3 is on Dyno tuning: Coming soon

Not that I ever had an oil in the air cleaner problem but, on my '17 Sportster I routed the breathers out the back of the SE Stage 1 air cleaner and down under the bike. No oil on the filter, no internal carbon buildup, and no hot oily mist being fed back into the intake.

Love your videos as always John the only reason the oil breather tubes are in the intake is for emissions they should really drain back into the crankcase with vapor being released into the atmosphere damn that EPA!!! Resulting in dirty throttle bodies carbon buildup on your Pistons and exhaust valves.

Then peeps take that as gospel,,, and spread the wrong shit around ,, so thumbs up to you brother,,, maybe ill jump on my scoot someday and visit on my way threw ...

John Maxwell I got started with HD when I was 15 I was born and raised in NYC .. I was about 13 and was with my dad in the car and a large group of HA from the 3rd street crew came flying past the car on the Long Island expressway ,, about 80mph and just shook the car all drag pipes loud as hell .. and that was it I was hooked,, the sound was like amazing to me... so I got a 1969 XLCR basket case missing many a pieces and just started piecing it together .. took 2 1/2 years to get running ...and back then (I’m 52) the old school bikers would show you how to do something but not do it for you , so that you would learn to wrench your own bike... so I slowly started learning and working in different bike shops all over the country ,, independent shops of course threw out my life whenever I needed a job,, learning new skills here and there from different folks.. then back in 2004 I was at my local dealership ( the owner and I were real good friends ) he had a pro mod race team with the now extinct AHDRA and we used to race together .. he couldn’t find good help .. so he asks me hey wanna work in my shop so I said sure lol .. and I had to go on HD net and take all the test I think there was 74 of them .. and the 2 week school and that was that ... I already knew what I needed to know to pass all the test so was a easy process.. except the dam how to spoke a wheel test that sucked lol had to take that one 2 times failed first time around.. but yea man that was how I did it ... bikes have kept food in my belly and wheels under my ass my whole life .... Basically HD gave me my life ... my wife of 25 years has her own bike also ... I have 3 now hers is a total custom 2003 1200C ,, and I have a 2010 streetglide which I took out of crate and took all apart and did 103 stage 4 ,, and I have a 2002 FXDWG3 black and gold CVO, only 700 made , 103ci stage 3 with 9,000 miles in mint condition ,, and that’s my story brother ...

Love the heavy breather. The 3 hp difference adds up, a performance build is the sum of it's parts. When you're squeezing every last drop of hp and tq out of a build and spending thousands on parts might as well pick the best performing components. Cool video though. Happy Thanksgiving.
@TheHarleyTech
@TheHarleyTech 6 жыл бұрын
When you're looking for numbers it is absolutely important to not skip a 3HP upgrade. I just wanted to make sure people understand that the difference is not huge like exhaust. When you're talking about stage 1 builds, it may not be worth it to everyone to pay double for an air filter that doesn't even give double the increased power.

I'm interested in everything mechanical, make videos on every aspect of everything as far as I'm concerned. After watching a lot of your videos I would let an unprofessional like you wrench on my bike. A shop isn't a surgery room. A mechanic or tech isn't a doctor with spotless equipment. The work is dirty (part of the reason people pay to have it done!) and as long as the steps are followed with the next maintenance in mind, dirty or clean make little difference. There's guys who have a messy work space but know exactly where the tool they need is. Others need organization. As long as the end product is done right, does it matter? Nope. Good work, great persistence, it's appreciated.

John, great work and can you tell what your opinion on Kurakyn Blood Grove air filter? Have you had anyone come into Chattahoochee HD with one? I had one on my 2007 Street Glide and really did not like the performance and yes I did tune it after I installed it. Rawhide HD here in Kansas where I live said they have had issues with them in the past. So not only did I put a new stage 1, I installed all new Full dual 3" Rinehart exhaust and its been a total change for the better in the performance of my bike once it was dyno'd.

Great videos and explanation John. If at all possible, please, please explain how to find vibration issues felt thru the floorboards if possible. It would really be appreciated. I have installed some fairly aggressive pipes (Tab Performance) so I’m guessing some vibes are being caused by the pipes sound waves? I’m just not sure how much vibration is considered normal. I have a 17 Road King and Harley said that they had eliminated 75% of the vibration on the M8. Is there some kind of meter that is able to register the actual vibration intensity level? I really preferred the smooth ride prior to the new exhaust install. I torqued everything to spec btw.
@TheHarleyTech
@TheHarleyTech 6 жыл бұрын
most times vibration through the floorboards like you're describing is because the pipe is actually touching the floorboard. It is also common for a bolt or something that was dropped to be wedged between the engine and frame. Those are the two most common excessive vibration situations I find. especially after having new parts installed!

It’s awesome that you posted this Cause I️ installed a alren ness big sucker stage1 in my m8 streetglide and it does leak oil it’s very annoying it hits the rear exhaust pipe and my saddle bag the only difference between it and the screaming eagle one you installed is it doesn’t have the little hoses the re directs into the throttle body which would be nice to have to keep the bike clean but I️ don’t want my bike drinking all that oil

Hi John, thanks for the video! So are you saying if i spend the extra money to get an extreme air filter that pulls up to 40% more airflow in to the intake versus a heavy breather the base map will be essentially the same since as you say, "HI FLOW" for air filter type is selected when dyno tuning the ECM? Can you clarify this for me?

Is some sort of an oil catch can out of the question? Just a thought.

I bought a bike that sat for a few years I checked everything but the air cleaner, once I took the air cleaner cover off the bike had eaten half the filter & the rest of it crumbled when I touched it.

John is it necessary to upgrade the oem 114 intake or can you replace the paper filter with k&n?

What’s your thoughts on the 2017 Street Glide with Milwaukee 8? It’s 2021 and im looking at buying a used 2017 mint condition with 10k miles. Just wanted your opinion.

An FNG Question... Does the M8 engine starve for air like a V twin? I get that the goal is to increase air flow in and out, but does the stock epa regulated bike (EPA regulated) really need this to sound better and performance better? Thx for taking the time to do these vids

I’m not 100% sure what you’re asking. I’m going to answer what I think you’re saying, though. A stock bike is starved for fuel. To sound better it needs mufflers. To perform better it needs a air filter with less resistance than stock. To maximize the air flow produced by adding these parts, the bike needs to be tuned. Thanks for watching, and I hope this answered your question.

How long should it take a Master Tech to install air cleaner and tuner on a 19 SGS Stage 1? Slip on would be installed by me.

+twomontess it’s definitely coming up! It’d be great to have a bike with the issue, but I may just bust out a cam plate and oil pump and do some talking.

Hey John have you guys ran the new Smart Tune wide-band sensors on any bikes yet? If so, how were the results? I've got a FLHR with slip ons, high flow AC and stage 2 torque cam running the torque cam base calibration. I want to throw some aftermarket headers on next which may throw that base calibration off a bit and wondering if the new auto tune module might be the ticket.

We have not used the smart tune wide band O2s, yet. Anytime I do an autotune, I still use the dyno and AFR readings from the dyno. I like to be able to double check everything, and make any manual adjustments I want to. Since I haven't used it at all, though. I can't speak to its success or failures.

Hey John, you know that M8 takes 4.5 quarts of oil. What can happen long term if you put all 5 qts in vice the 4.5?

Oil burn caused by blow by going back into the intake and leaking externally from the air breather making your bike look like snit
