2017 Suzuki V-Strom 650 Review - In this video I test ride the newly updated Suzuki V-Strom 650 in it's slightly more off-road variant the XT. I had fairly low expectations of this all-rounder bike which usually to me mean unexciting and boring, but in this case I was pleasantly surprised...stay tuned to find out why!
Thanks to the guys at Ford & Ellis, the Suzuki dealer for Chesham and the surrounding areas, for making this ride possible.

Regret selling my '12 650 a couple of years ago but looking forward to getting a replacement. I'm 71 and have been riding for many decades and the V-Strom in my opinion is the most versatile bike I've ever owned.

The V-Strom 650 has no right being as good as it is. Ridiculously good all rounder. Turbine smooth, refined v-twin, handles well, good screen, good on motorways, quick enough to blat off cars on twisties, love the instruments, comes with a useful power socket in the control binnacle and it even has a practical, solid rear rack. Maybe the one bike that could do it all.

What about when you put a pillion onto it? Still? I am looking for a bike which I could take onto easy off-road parts of the world (alone) while also be able to tour comfortably with a pillion around Italian and Swiss Alps while also getting good mileage for commuting. Is that even possible? I currently own a Yamaha TDM900 and it's perfect for pretty much everything except off-road. On paper, the V-strom looks really similar but I think its off-road capabilities are superior.

@@RonaiHenrik for your purpose I would said Vstrom 1000 if you like to go fast in twisties with your pillon, if you like riding cool I would say the vstrom 650 no doubt

A truly great bike without all the TFT display none sense and without all the electronic doo-dahs to interfere. I don’t think the dash is old fashioned at all, it has everything that you need at a glance. Do we really want or need to spend time looking at a TFT screen to try and change the temperature of your heated grips or to make phone calls for God’s sake? Motorcycling is dangerous enough without all the computer monitor crap that manufacturers think we need! Thank goodness for Suzuki!

Forgive me Mr Missended Flyer (as i know you like the Triumph) I have just traded in my Triumph Street Triple R 675 for one of these fine motorcycles. 20 years of plastering and Thrashing Heavy Metal on a Guitar has left my wrists a little worst for wear! Although the Triumph was not a really sporty bike i still had a lot of weight on my wrists, but after test riding the V-Strom 650 it was like riding a cloud (A cloud with massive mirrors where i could see pretty much everything happening behind me without tucking my elbows in) and as soon as i got back to the dealers i said sign me up! Also i'm surprised at how nimble the bike is and you can really throw it around if you want to. Great bike.

I owned an earlier version, but it had exactly he qualities TMF reports. Absolutely fault free in any weather in Oz, both freezing and over 40C no problem to start or run. Fantastic fuel economy, I got 500 kms with careful use of the throttle - brilliant long distance tourer! Of all the bikes I have owned this, the Suzuki 650 V-Strom is the best of all, inc. BMW, Moto Guzzi and other Japanese brands.

another great review! I actually bought this bike a month ago after test riding both the 650 and 1000. I found that with my riding style, and where I like to ride here in Nova Scotia that I was using more of the motor on the 650. The 1000 was great, but I didn't need all the extra torque, and horsepower as I don't do a lot of motorway riding. Once again a great review...happy biking, and thanks for a great channel!

I had an early version DL650 and what a great bike, I ragged it around Mallory Park embarrassing a few sports bikes and toured France two up overloaded. What spoilt it was the rear footrests are so spread apart my pillion with short legs sat with legs splayed and with the panniers fitted it was as wide as a small car. I replaced it with a BMW 650GS (800 twin) but preferred the Suzuki a much underrated bike.

Over time I’ve owned three DL650’s, all bought new, then used well. Because of this I’ve come to meet many ‘Strom riders from all over the planet. If there’s a common theme in our conversations I’d say it’s this: If, time and money wise, you can only afford one bike, you can’t go wrong with the ‘Strom. However, if your fortunate enough to have a few bikes in the garage, the ‘Strom is the best bike to mix with the others.

@@georgeblumenthal7938 I have a '15 Adv model, which is largely the same bike. TheMissendenFlyer review is spot on -- competent do-everything bike for very modest money. And yes, it can do 70-75 mph on the highway for as many hours as you like. The engine is not working especially hard at 70-80 in 6th. Surprising comfort. (I've had 5 BMWs in the course of my riding life, and the Wee-strom is no slouch.)

Excellent review, thanks. While you are correct in pointing out the basic (though complete) instrumentation and features, you must remember that the V-Strom/DL650 is targeted for a modest price point. It's a lot of bike for the money. I bought my '15 "Adventure" ABS version, panniers & mounts, engine guards, added center stand, heated grips, hand guards, and factory tail mounting plate for $7100 out the door. (It's not uncommon to find brand new 1-2 year old dealer stock.) Functional upgrades: top case, LED lighting, digital speedo correction, and braided-SS brake lines. Incredible value for a durable, comfortable all purpose machine. I found your channel only a few weeks back, and have already enjoyed many of your reviews. Good basic info for everyday riders.

Great review! I have that exact bike, same year, same color, XT model. I've had other bikes, but this is my favorite so far, and probably my last - I just turned 72. In the hills of southwestern Colorado I have to ride miles in any direction to hit pavement and the Strom does very well (I plan to upgrade to either Mitas E07 tires or Dunlop Trailmax Missions. Everything here is hilly and twisty (I'm at 7550 ft. elevation / 2301 meters). County roads and highways are a piece of cake for this bike. (I have a dirt bike - Husaberg FE390 - for the rough stuff, but ride the Strom FAR more these days. I've ridden but never owned a true sport bike, but at 6'3' and a 34 inch inseam, I don't like the position of sport bikes. This 650 has more than enough torque to keep me happy at any speed. Thanks for a great review - I just subbed to you channel. - Ray, near Durango, CO, 7 inches of new snow and 5 degrees F this week.

Thanks for making this video. Heard of you from the guys at NLMT so watched a few of your videos after taking the Direct Access course with them. After watching this video I spent a day on Autotrader and eBay and impulsively ended up with a superb 1yo DL650 XT in black/red with bars, grips, a Scotoiler, luggage and LED indicators- spotted, seen and bought within a day and have to agree with every point you made. This bike does everything well and for the money it’s unbelievable value. Compared against the TigerSport 660 - fantastic but £4kmore for the same spec and rare second hand, the Versys - lovely but didn’t feel as easy/nice to ride and the Tracer - brilliant looks, very comfy but needs a lot more riding than someone of my advanced years and limited skills can give. Learned on a SV650, this is better for going places, love it, thanks for your wise words/time, keep going please….

I've got the Honda NC700X which I think falls into the same category. It's successor/improvement, the NC750X, is an equally capable all-rounder, not much fun but VERY practical and useful. It looks a bit "too" fancy compared to mine if you ask me, but it's a bike you might want to have a look at one day. Keep up the good videos, thanks!

you and those white vans! LOL I did like the tail rack on the back of my old 2013 VStrom 650. The Kawi Versys 650 (which I have now) does not have the rack. and not easy to find aftermarket. BLAH! Great video, keep em coming!

About a month back I did a short demo ride on the street version of the DL1000. Like you on the 650, I wasn't expecting much as most of the magazines gave it somewhat lackluster reviews. I think subconsciously they always compare bikes like these to the BMW GS series. Well like you I was very pleasantly surprised at what a great bike it was. I'm 6'1" and 220 lbs. (yes, my doctor tells me to lose weight) and found it roomy and easy to handle. It had power, handling, comfort and the brakes were very good. If I was in the market for a new bike, it would be on my short list.

Thanks for the great review Andy. I Was looking to upgrade my NC750x to a late model GS (which I'd had back in 2012-16) or a V-Strom 1050. However, having seen a nearly new 650 V-Strom XT with almost every conveivable extra on it at the dealer, and considering the majority of my riding is in into London, I came back and had a look at your review. Having ridden the 1050 and 650, there is obviously a clear difference, but based on where and how I'd be riding, I decided to have a punt on the 650 saving myself almost £5k into the bargain. Now I'm the proud owner of said 650, I feel a lot more satisfied than I did with the very utilitarian NC and feel I have a good compromise between fun and commuting practicality. Thanks again. ;-)

What about when you put a pillion onto it? Still great? I am looking for a bike which I could take onto easy off-road parts of the world (alone) while also be able to tour comfortably with a pillion around Italian and Swiss Alps while also getting good mileage for commuting. Is that even possible? I currently own a Yamaha TDM900 and it's perfect for pretty much everything except off-road. On paper, the V-strom looks really similar but I think its off-road capabilities are superior. I like how the TDM900 is basically uneffected when with pillion (as to when without). It has great power (86 HP and 88 Nm) while getting great economy (around 4,5 L/100km when there are no traffic lights or traffic jams), although commuting gets me up to 5,5 L/100km. Thanks for this review and any additional input!

I own a 2012 650 v storm it makes me feel good you like it. Though I did like the Triumph tiger 800 as it felt less top heavy. But as you say this is a excellent bike. For multiple disciplines. Great vid as always M Flyer. Superb!!!

Perfect review for this bike TMF, you hit the nail on the head with your summing up at the end of the video on all points. This was my choice for a first bike, I use it for commuting everyday but also living locally to the Brecons regular spirited rides with a few friends are always on the cards and it holds its own. Now with nearly 10k on the clock it's proven to be reliable and very cheap to run. Was actually looking through your playlists for a review on a BMW s1000xr as your my go to reviewer and i have a test ride coming up couldn't find one so watched a review on a bike I already own instead as we all do ; )

Couldn’t agree more about riding modes. I’ve only ridden one bike where I thought I’d ever need any modes other than sports mode and that was a Tiger Sport 1050 which had a dreadful throttle which was either on or off so it was constantly either trying to wheelie or trying to lock up the rear wheel. I love vTwins so I think I may need to check our the vstroms. Great review as ever TMS. Thanks

I just picked up the same model today. I had a 1200 Explorer but even though the 650 vstrom only has about half the hp and torque of the Triumph it goes much better than those figures would suggest. The vstrom is the 35th bike I have owned but I did start at 15 years old and I am almost 60. I've previously owned two 650 vstrom's a 2008 and a 2012 and they just get better every generation. This 2017 vstrom is a cracking bike so I am pleased I bought it. It's about 43kg lighter than the Triumph so it feels like a push bike in comparison especially moving it out of the garage. Mr MF you do interesting and informative bike reviews, I look forward to getting notifications from your channel all the way from Queensland Australia so keep them coming. PS just for interest I dropped about $10k on the Triumph today after just over 2 years and 34,000km. When I sold the 2012 Vstrom at 4 years old and close to 80,000km I only did a bit over $4k. Go figure even taking original purchase price of both into consideration?

@newscootgoofin 3 жыл бұрын
Dave Co I loved my Himalayan it was simple, lightweight and had a unique style that had a lot of people stopping to ask about it. But, the V strom is just a better bike in almost every way but price. More power, proven reliability and way more comfortable on a long trip. Just being able to keep up with US highway traffic is a huge plus too. However, If the Himalayan had 10 more horsepower and a 6th gear I still might have it. The enfield is just way too underpowered.
