Volkswagen’s top seller, the Jetta compact sedan, ends its sixth generation in 2017 with a simpler lineup, more standard and optional safety features, and a standard reversing camera. The Jetta will take 2018 off before coming back in seventh-generation form for the 2019 model year, but while our reviewer finds the lineup’s pricing range wide enough to include great deals and overpriced ones, he calls this year’s car the best of the sixth generation.
Three engines are offered in the 2017 Jetta. A 1.4-liter turbo 4-cylinder with 150 hp and 184 lb-ft gets EPA estimates of 28 mpg city, 38 highway, 32 combined. A 1.8-liter turbo four with 170 hp and 184 lb-ft meets the highway-passing challenge, but returns 3 fewer miles per gallon across the board. The GLI puts a 2.0-liter turbo with 210 hp and 207 lb-ft under its hood, returning 23 mpg city, 33 highway, 27 combined. Read more on CarGurus: cargur.us/knPK2
