2017 Yamaha TMax DX Scooter Review
In this video I take a first look at the Yamaha flagship "Maxiscoot" the TMax DX. This luxuriously appointed 500cc machine is a scooter that has more in common with a conventional motorcycle in terms of its engine architecture. In this review I look at its riding characteristics as well as it's unique motorcycle like features. STay tuned!

I`ve been riding scooters since a got my licence in 2000. Started with a yamaha majesty 125 and that thing made enjoy scooters much more than any Motorcycle I`ve owned. Its just so much simpler: No gears, no chain, your whole body is protected from the wind and you can ride it like a boss with your feet forward. And the japanese modding scene with t-maxes are just awesome:)

I have always had big bikes, and never even looked towards scooters. It was until a week ago, when my wife and I went to Amalfi coast and rented a villa in a small village called Praiano. I have quickly realised, the only parking space for a car is my own driveway, it was next to impossible to find parking elsewhere. Then walking around I have noticed a scooter hire shop, and got 125cc Honda. This thing is so great in local road conditions. I can go anywhere and park on the doorstep :)) and it is faster, as roads are extra narrow, cars have to wait to let each other through. Also this area is on a mountain slope, and two up this thing easily going up stop hill doing 35-40 mph. It is impressive. Definitely considering of buying a maxi on return home, to use as handy run around. There is quite substantial under seat storage, enough to fit two helmets and gloves, or a shopping bag... I would say, I am impressed by this type of machine :)

This review has totally changed my mind about buying a BMW RT1200 touring bike. After a spell from bikes for about 5 years I’ve noticed how popular these are in London. With your knowledge of riding all kinds of bikes, I think I’ll definitely get one of these after such a wonderfully informative review. Many thanks.

While I'm US based, I just got back from a 1000 mile trip on a Maxiscoot. A burgman 650 to be precise. It's not got as many bells and whistles as the new DX being 10 years older. But they handle 70-90 mph cruising all day with no trouble. Stretched out in the feet forward bagger lounge position. Straight up and down like a standard. Or you can put your toes on the back of the boards and get a slightly sportier position where you can attack backroad curves more aggressively.

As always, an excellent review. I've owned several big scooters over the years. First was a mark 1 Burgman 250' then two majesty 400s and currently I have a Burgman 650. They really are the most practical do-it-all machines. The big Burgman has the best luggage capacity and fairing for touring and is supremely comfortable.

These maxiscooters are a legit style of *motorcycle*. When I sold bikes the dealership hardly let any of their employees ride the inventory so although I've sold a fair number of scooters (Piaggio & Vespa) it was some years before I actually rode one. That was at a Suzuki demo days event, and that day I rode a Bergman 650 Executive and a Gixxer 1000. Both made me smile! 2 wheels good!

I enjoyed your review of the Suzuki Burgman 650 I think it is the benchmark for maxi scooters. These are big powerful scooters that are meant to be taken out on the highways/motorways/freeways and the backroads for a day spent enjoying the scenery. The T Max looks like the next best thing. I am particularly impressed with the vertical movement of the screen. It seems there is more movement than with the Burgman. Although in fairness my Burgman has an after market screen which is wider than the stock screen and therefore gives better wind protection. I think this machine could do with a wider screen. I like the upswept exhaust it gives it a nice look and helps with the lean. Among the more advanced features of this bike which I hope are now available on the Burgman are cruise control, traction control and the ability to access maps. I saw a recent review of the Kymco AK 550 and I not it has built in sat nav you have to be able to hear directions as well as see the turns - I'm not sure how the Kymco deals with this. Does the T Max have some built in speakers so you can hear directions? I am confused by the cruise control on the left handle bar - the throttle/twist grip is on the right. I have a Kawasaki Voyager 1700 with cruise control - it is on the right handle bar. As you note the under seat storage is not big enough for 2 full face helmets a feature of the Burgman. I fitted a top box to my Burgman - it replaces the passenger back rest and cowl. Both these bikes appear plenty powerful and have good transmission. I don't need to fiddle with buttons so I don't use the manual mode or the power button on the Burgman. You mention the mirrors, I like the electrically fold in mirrors on the Burgman - good for lane splitting and also for parking. Thanks for the review.

Mike. I had a 650 Burgman about 10 years ago and it was fantastically comfortable and off the line was pretty spritely, which the Yam seems even better at. I've also got an MT10, but don't go thinking it'll have that sort of acceleration, as it just won't, but these big scooters are real fun and so practical.

Really enjoying your tour vlogs, I stayed up until 3am Saturday watched Wind River, then the North Coast 500 or 7?? enjoyed them both. As I mentioned a while ago, the Welsh one is in my old home ground so its a bit special for me. I did some of the A82, 4 years ago, stayed at Loch Lomond, did the run through Glencoe up to Fort William, brilliant ! I was on a newish GSF 1250n, there was an 08 Blade and an older but mint GSF 1250s, spent a few meal times in the Green Welly. PLEASE keep up the good work, Friday’s don’t come quick enough now. Looks like a good alternative to a touring bike like an R1200RT because of its comfort levels, luggage carrying capacity and decent adjustable windscreen. In most countries you can only travel at 100-120Km/h on freeways or open roads, so for touring duty, this bike would do it nicely.

TMF; Excellent review, intelligent and non bias. My own feeling is there is some long standing bad feeling towards scooter riders. The service costs for these machines is a factor (as for any other). I live in rural Wales so dealer accessibility (for service support is an additional consideration); As I approach 60 years old and a lifelong biker and these past 14 years daily rider, the weather protection, luggage capacity and ease of use appeal. 2018 will see me switching to either the TMAX or XADV.

Just teated my self to a pre loved Tmax530 and loving it. The effect of the airflow when the screen is fully extended reminds me of the way an aeroplane wing generates lift: Bernoulli's Pinciple.

Hi TMF, Great review, I ride a Vespa 300 GTS as my second bike, me and the misses went over to the IOW scooter rally, 2 up plus luggage no problem, 75 mph all day long, cost me around £10 to get there from the Midlands, Toured Europe many a time on my 1st choice bike R1200GS, scooters are equally if not more comfortable and practical. Onto the BMW 650 GT now.

It's interesting hearing you say how you struggle to find something negative to say about any given bike you are reviewing. What I personally see is that though there are some occasional issues most of the negative things to say about them are either very minor annoyances or just personal preferences. I think this speaks volumes for the state of motorcycling today that the vast majority of bikes are really quite good and while you will find things that could be better, realistically the manufacturers have got things dialed in. My first "bike" was a Honda Spree scooter (way back in the 80's LOL) and while I personally don't like them and wouldn't have another scooter I can see how valuable they are for some people. The practical features they provide just can't be argued with and it's great to see you giving treatment on scooters for those folks who are interested in them.

Had a three wheel Gilera Fuoco 500 for a while between my Blackbird and my HD. Great fun to ride. I'd say very similar to the Tmax. On a GS now so sticking for now. Will go back to a maxi scooter when I can't get my leg over any more...

Been a biker for almost 21 years, and after a test ride, I have just picked up a 2006 Majesty 400. So far I have been very impressed, and I am not really sure why I didn't get one years ago (other than the stigma surrounding them), as it has everything a normal bike has. Mine has 90% of the T-Max performance, but weighs so much less. Has more room under the seat, too!

I know the brakes are good as a guy in greece hit his hard and done a 180 rear wheel swung right round how he didn't come off I'm surprised ... mpg I would guess is a lot lower than the xmax 300 and 400

I'll probably buy tmax this month but I haven't had the chance to ride it yet. I'm 1.70 height. Do you believe I'll have problems reaching the road or it's good center of gravity makes up for this? Thanks :-)

I'm wondering if you can get a hold of the 400 to see if there's enough of a difference between the 300 and 400cc XMax to justify the thousand pound price difference. By the way if you lose your "fob" key, I think you can type in a secret code that allows you to start the bike.

Hi, as an old school non-scooter type, I assume this fireball has some kind of twist & go, one speed 'treacle drive' - in which case, why the rev counter? Also, as I couldn't see any pedals anywhere (Bader would have loved it), is it just one brake lever for each wheel (as it seems) or are any of the discs linked? Now; if the 1960's Triumph Tigress had been like this - who knows eh . . .
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it is one brake lever for each wheel, I'm not sure if they are linked brakes (they maybe) - this bike has an auto gearbox a bit like the DCT in the honda XC750, rather than a CVT set up like a "conventional" scooter....

Good grief that scooter is rapid on the motorway!! easily holding it's own with the cars. Looks pretty slick too and has just about everything on it except the kitchen sink!!!. Lovely review TMF. I think these bikes and electric bikes could be the future for urban commutes and attracting more people into motorcycling. Lower maintenance cost, lower fuel cost, lower learning curve, lower license req and less intimidating all make for motorcycling becoming more and more viable to first timers / commuters.

@@TheMissendenFlyer For all but the less Learning and lower licensing requirements. In British Columbia I was going to write you don't even need a MC License to ride a scooter, though I just looked it up, they have finally cracked down, now if the machine is over 51CC's you must get a MC (class 6) license. Very good, used to really bother me, people buying them and not knowing how to ride one, get out on the rights of way and.... Still a problem with the weekend warriors who go rent the small ones and ride around town---Very Much a Tourist town here especially the Spring, Summer, and Fall---and ride like escaped Lunatics. I read your review of the XMAX 300 and for the price it seemed to tick a lot of boxes. Now having seen this review it just cements my opinion of the versatility of a maxi-style scooter. I've recently ordered an XMAX (sadly the TMax was just too expensive for me). You're reviews of these 2 mid-sized scooters has left me feeling that you are truly impressed with them as a practical and enjoyable means of transport. This begs a question for you. Would you consider replacing one of your current bikes from your garage with a maxi-style scooter (not necessarily a Yamaha, but maybe the BMW C400GT or something similar)? If so, which bike would have to go? :-)
