Surprisingly this isn't the worst version. They made one with the computer on top of the battery. You have to save the program on it or the whole ecm has to be reflashed.

No problem, glad the video helped. The GMC Terrain is basically the same suv with different trim parts. Mechanically it is pretty much the same as the Equinox. Thank you. I had to replace my daughter's Equinox battery this morning and this video was a huge time saver. Yes I would have figured out how to get that sucker out eventually but I probably would have broken something in the process. We need to stop buying vehicles that are designed this poorly for common service tasks. A battery swap should take about ten minutes, including cleaning the contacts. Her 2019 Equinox took me about 40 minutes (largely because there's nowhere to set parts in there and nobody though it would be a good idea to use a single size socket for the whole assembly (need a 10mm and a 12mm). It took my neighbor two days to change a headlight on his Nissan truck because he had to remove the entire front end to get to the screws holding it in. The service manual estimated 8 hours, took more like 12. To change a headlight!

I totally agree, i am all about the days you could climb into the engine compartment with the engine to work on it. Engineers seem to work towards more compact and harder to get to, instead of simpler and easier to fix. Sorry you had trouble. I'm glad our video could we have more videos on this, so remember to subscribe, but we did get rid of it this cars and there won't be more videos in the future.

This video was great! Changed it out no problem. Hardest thing was the little red wire to disconnect in the back. I must be stronger than you I only used my two hands to get the battery out not three!! Lol!!! On mine the black cable was 1/2" socket. I will subscribe to your channel!

Came back here because it's been 4 years since I've owned the car and it's still running well. I only came to this video because my mom's car battery died even after 9 months of owning it (2021 CRV). When I wanted to Jumpstart her car I didn't know what to do since it looks complicated. Anyway the battery after 4 years is still running fine.

Thank you I have a dead vehicle and I have been told by a mechanic that because the voltage is low on the battery it needs to be replaced and then I have to touch the terminal wires together to cold reset the computer before using the new battery. Praying that this works

I don't think touching the terminal together would do anything. Your low battery may have already caused the programming to drop out. Depending on how low the voltage got. Best of luck

The "crazy 'T' bracket" was probably the best part of changing this battery; no bracket poles falling down into the engine compartment!

@@SKPcars At the 0:02 second mark, there's a metal frame just below where the negative cable is hanging that (on the Equinox I worked on) held the rear part of the bracket as a hook or a clip perfectly while I took care of the gadget on top of the battery. There was no need to remove anything else. Maybe I got lucky with that battery exchange! 😅

@@GarrettWorcester i remember there is a loop in the metal the hold it to the tray. I remember they don't come out easy. Off hand i don't remember if there is a holder for the post. I remember the top bracket came off and went on pretty easy. I would have to look at it again to see if there is something hold it up.

If you lack the skill to do it, it is best to take it to someone. If you have the skill its not as hard as it seems. The style with the computer on top is much harder.

hey did the battery light that was flashing cut off as soon as you changed the battery or did you have to drive for a while so the computer can register the new battery

The only advantage to it versus the on top style is, you have to back up the on top style computer. This one you don't. I agree though, awful design. Thanks for watching.

Great video! Do I need to use a 12v ODB2 memory saver before I disconnect the negative cable to preserve my "learned" settings on my 2020 Equinox?

If you have the computer on top yes because of the way you disconnect it. If you disconnect this type the way i did you shouldn't unless the battery is disconnected for a long period of time. I didn't lose anything when i reconnected. My battery was disconnected for only a few mins. Good luck.

This is the only one on KZfaq that even mentions the little red slider/screw driver trick! Why would GM do that? So everyone will give up and take the car back to the dealer to finish the job, that's why. Or, was it just a stupid engineer? I should send them a bill for the time I wasted.

Best video I have watched for working on my car. Followed the video step by step, but my alarm still went off after connecting the negative. Did I do something backwards or is my car just special

You should be able to reset the alarm by hitting the button on the remote. The alarm system just lost charge and defaults to alarm. Especially if it is an after market alarm.

to keep from having to reboot the computer use a keep alive cable to any good 12 volt battery I got mine off of amazon for about $12.

Thanks for the vid! I am about to replace the battery in my wifes Equinox. You mention at the end about resetting the computer. What does that entail? Do I need something special to do this or is this as simple as just retting radio presets, clock, etc.?

As long as you don't have the computer disconnected for any extended period of time it should just hook back up and run. Exapmle pull battery out and put in new battery, should be fine. Take battery out, go to the store buy a new one, bring home and install. You will lose the program. Generally not a job done at home. You have to connect to the computer with a plug for the computer and store the current program. Then, reinstall the program once the new battery is in. They do make program savers that connects to it and holds the program. You still kind of have to know how to do it. I don't know what those cost. I currently don't have one.

I recently replaced my battery and now my infotainment screen is displaying "Calibrate Device :One of more devices need to be calibrated prior to use".... It doesn't let me do anything on the screen. Does anyone have any experience with this or know what i did wrong?

This is what it looks like when you lose the program. The car needs hooked up to a computer to relearn the settings. This is more likely with the computer on top of the battery. If it was side mounted and done the way i walked through, it shouldn't have happened unless you have a power drain from another source. At this point you need a mechanic with chevy software to reflash it. Sorry i don't have better info.

How do you install the negative without sparks?

While i know its a little uncomfortable, it is nothing to worry about. You are completing an electrical circuit. A small amount of electrical discharge is normal until a smooth connection is made. If it sparks like crazy and after it is connected there is something else going on.

Is there some kind of notification before the battery dies or does it just suddenly die? I have a 2019 2.0L Equinox, but my previous vehicle was a 1997 Blazer…and technology changed a lot since then…. With the Blazer it just died suddenly.

This is an interesting question. As far as i know no car has a battery failure notification system. As for the battery i know ac delco tried a battery life indicator years ago but it never worked right. Batteries fail for all sorts of reasons, sometimes you get lucky and it will give you 1 or 2 slow cranks before it fails. A lot of the time it is just dead. A bad cell in the battery or system slow drain will cause it. Best case, keep jumper cables or a quick start ready in the car and it will get you to an auto parts store or home. If it has a bad cell there is not much you can do but change it, it generally won't start again. Thanks for the comment, make to subscribe if you haven't already.

@@SKPcars Ok. I was hoping there would be some early failure detection. Hopefully it doesn't just not start at a light or something. I've got a conference out of my state in a couple weeks. With the last car, that could often be an interesting experience to drive there (battery issues, fluid just disappearing, random cold weather issues,...). As the Equinox gets up there with miles and age, I'm sure things will start to go on mine. I subscribed since you seem to have a similar car, and I can't find any repair guides at all for my year. It looked like a shop manual is available for 2018, which I might end up ordering if they never make a 2019 version. I'd think those should be close enough for most repairs.

@@Korn1699 if it starts at a light, your battery is not getting charged. That would be an alternator issue causing the battery to go flat. A lot of repair manuals now days are downloadable. I didn't directly see chilton or hayes making one but they may have a downloadable version. I did see a repair manual on ebay that was downloadable by an unknown brand so i have no idea what would be in it. We did have this car but we got rid of it because an engine issue that would we couldn't figure out. I think it was related to the vvt.

Since your issues sounds alternator related you can actually watch the voltmeter from the center screen. It should show the voltage while running. The alternator should be pushing 14 volts into the battery, if its not you have an alternator problem.

@@SKPcars I have no issue, right now. I was just trying to prepare for the possibility of having a battery issue with my Equinox, since I've had battery issues other years while at this conference, with my last car. It is also almost 4 years old, at this point. This is the first car I've had with this type of battery and the first that shut off at lights. I wasn't sure if a failure could occur with the battery itself, where it would not have enough power to start back up, due to a battery failure. It sounds like if a failure happens, it would be after the car sat for a while.

You have to connect to the car computer with a computer and back it up before you disconnect it. Then reload it to the car computer. They make a device that connects to it and store the program. Unless you mean reset it after changing it? That is a different thing all together. Generally the computer needs to see a few drives at highway speeds over 50 mph over 50 miles. It will reset the base setting that way. I think total it needs 150 miles min of driving. Switching out the battery if it is the same model shouldn't require any of that though.

If you have the type with the computer on the top there is a whole process for it. With it on the side you don't have to do as much to change it. There is no resetting the computer as long as it isn't out so long all the power drains out of the system. I had this one out about an hour with no issues. It should be an H6 AGM battery. @@vasiljevicbranko its pretty obvious if it is on top of the battery. There is a silver box looking part towards the passenger side of your battery. If you followed the video, your computer is there. On some older models that box sits over the top of the battery and has to be completely removed to change the battery. That is the main computer for the car. If it is complete removed it require a complete back up. If you go through the steps i talked about and the computer is still getting some residual power from other parts of the system your install should be fine. To be on the safe side some people will back up the computer to a flash drive when they do that. This type doesn't need it. As long as your car is running alright after the change out, you did it correctly. If you are having an issue there may be something going on.

@SanityKillerProjects thanks for the reply. To be honest, I don't know if I have the computer on top of the battery. Your equinox battery module looks identical to mine. But all I know is I changed my battery 2 weeks ago and I have been having issues with my car not starting, turning off while and in park. I took it to the dealership, and they are saying starter needs to be replaced. Is there any other way we can communicate directly? I'd love to pick your brain if you are able and willing to help. Let me know.

@@vasiljevicbranko i honestly don't know what help i would be. If you have followed any of the recent videos on the equinox. We have been having a hesitation issue with the throttle. I plan to do a video or short on it soon. Besides the jobs done, i sent to a mechanic to have the turbo checked, i don'thave to tool at my house. We had a hole in the intercooler, didn't fix the issue. My mechanic that was working on the turbo had a friend who works at the dealership look at it. He said these have been flooding in with all kinds engine issues. To make a long story we are dumping our equinox. The only thing i would suggest is having the computer program reloaded through either a dealership or mechanic with chevy service computer software. If the issues start when you changed the battery. I was considering buying this car but this would be the deal breaker. My bro has a 2015 chevy traverse and his battery is located under the floorboard of the backseat. Why chevy???

That actually make sense for weight distribution and is probably easier then this. Volkswagens bettles were known for having them under the backseat. I would prefer it there compared to this set up. The big problem with that is cable corrosion because of the length.

If in the event of losing it or in effort to keep the info safe. You have to hook a computer to the obd2 port and save the entire system. They make hand held versions but they are expensive. Generally it takes a mechanic or the dealer. The way done in this video should keep the info in the system unless there is another problem.

I haven't had to do one yet. I assumed it was more of a pain since you had to move the computer. I have been told you have to data save those. This style doesn't require that.

I'm a little confused as to what you are asking. The computer shouldn't need reset if everything went correctly. Did you lose the program? Then you need the program for your car reinstalled. Usually by a gm mechanic. Do you have codes after you started it? Some codes will go away once they see the correct conditions met. Generally after a few drives. Is it not running correctly? You may have active codes were there before you changed the battery. Some codes can be reset with an obd2 reader.

So again your question is a bit vague. If you just want to back up the computer, yes you would have to connect to the obd2 port and back up the entire memory. The way i take everything apart, the memory doesn't get lost. If you had the computer on top style you would be required to back up the memory and reflash the system once the job is completed. With the battery on the side you can keep enough connected to keep the memory for a short period of time while changing the battery. You can also do it as a fail safe if you are worried about losing it.

There was no memory loss with the way the battery was changed. I believe that happens on the style with the computer on top or if you leave it unplugged for an extended period of time. With the other style you have to download the computer info and reload it after hook up of the new battery.
