This is it! The big 'A' race. We are racing for the 2018 state champion jersey in the pro men category. Who can prove he's the fastest in a one-race winner-takes-all competition. The event was part of the Crafts n Cranks festival at Snow Summit.
The XCO course is a long one-lap loop in Big Bear Lake California. The first part is mostly fire roads and then we get on some of the best mountain biking single track California has to offer. We end the race lower than where we started with a full-on enduro stage descent that can often make or break the race.
🏆 Race podium
1st Samuel Brehm
2nd Stefano Barberi
3rd Jonah Sanchez
I finished 4th! OH YEAH!! Super stoked! My best result at state champs.

- Great race. Great result. It is not often we see you in a race that in one long lap. - Are all the riders GPS tracked? Because I was wondering how you are able to know on your metadata what position you are in? - Do you run a dropper post on your bike for races? - How much water/liquid do you typically consume during a race? - Btw what happened to the Josh cam lol? Sorry about all the questions. Just enjoy watching the videos and have questions lol
@bengoyette
@bengoyette 5 жыл бұрын
I edit the position manually; it takes a while to figure out all the passing moves from the video. Sometime I check the Strava Flyby to see what happened. No dropper. I had 1.5L of fluid for that race but at most races, I use only two bottles. Josh wasn't racing with us. He was riding the bike park!

One thing I'm really curious about is on these races are you constantly locking and unlocking your shocks depending on the terrain? Or do you just leave them unlocked for the hills and everything? Btw this is a great race for 5th place with the red-shirted guy, you guys are in an epic wheel-to-wheel war!
@bengoyette
@bengoyette 5 жыл бұрын
I must be locking/unlocking 100 times per race. I use it a lot because it makes the bike so stiff, it's worth it even for 3 pedal strokes. I "re-wired my brain" so that I have to press the lever to stand up. I also used the trail mode a lot on that course, which is in between locked and open. Myles in the red-shirt was riding the single track so well, taking full advantage of his dropper seat post! It's great to watch him ride. He's a mechanical engineer working for SRAM.
@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 5 жыл бұрын
@@bengoyette Ah well I bet Myles isn't using XTR then! Now this is interesting for me that you mention Myles rode well on the single-track, because when you were riding next to him early on the fire road I looked at his bike from the side and was struck by the fact that it looked like his frame geometry was on the trail side of XC. And then when he was behind you on the single-track, I saw him in your rear camera and was again struck by the width of his handlebars which seemed to be on the trail width side of XC. Now I'm a complete mtb noob so my judging of his geometry might just be in my head. But it's just a coincidence that I thought his bike geometry was a fair bit on the trail side of XC, and that you then said he was riding very well on the single-track.

@@bengoyette Ah I see, that makes more sense lol. He's doing pretty damn good for one gear then. I used to race on one gear as a kid in sub-juvenile 3 (under-12s in the 80s) here in Australia, we were only allowed one gear for road racing and it couldn't be bigger than a 69-inch. My father (coach at the time) used to send me down big steep hills as a 9 yo on my track bike with a 61-inch fixed gear with no brakes, in order to practice high-cadence pedaling. He apologized for it when I pointed it out to him as an adult. But in the process I'd get up to 60 kph with a cadence of about 190. Well I had no choice, it was either keep up with the bike or crash spectacularly. Dad was too obsessed with high-cadence smh. "Ok son, if you survive this, you'll be a better rider".

@@bengoyette I see mountain biking finally adopted a category system like road racing. When I was racing in Alaska during the 90s, there were the pure pros, which we didn’t have in Alaska, the pro/expert (we just called it expert for short), the “citizen” class, and beginner. There just weren’t enough people participating to have more classes. We had some strong riders though.

This is so confusing. This is a "pro" race? Guy riding with you for most of the race was on a hightower, another on drop bars, and another in baggy shorts. Some your passes were extremely unnecessarily risky and you were half wheeling on so many occasions it was nerve wracking. What was the format of this race? Was it a mixed class start? How many participants?

You got 4th in the Pro-level California State Championships? So this is the absolute fastest xc riders in California, which means you're literally in the top 5 fastest xc racers in the California this year? That's wow! Where is that young chap Blake Wray, or those super-fast Menso or Tinker dudes? Are they not Californian? Hey have you ever qualified for US Nationals, I bet you'd be coming close to qualifying with 4th in the state?! Well I'm off to watch the race...
@bengoyette
@bengoyette 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, that's what the official results say. I got 4th at State Champs and 4th overall in the Pro Series over 7 races. I never thought I'd be a top pro in California. I got 3rd last year. I bet more guys could beat me if they tried, but if they choose to focus on other stuff like endurance racing or road racing (or their NBA career) then we can just speculate what could have been. It was a tough season that took a lot of grit & dedication just to complete all the race weekends.
@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 5 жыл бұрын
@@bengoyette You're a hard-working (and talented) guy to achieve 4th in the points series, I know they are insanely-hard work to do well at as I've seen athletes competing for points series in other pro endurance sports. Especially given that you're competing against many pros with a great deal of support and resources. Not only do you have to complete all the race weekends, but you have to do well at them all too, have to stay peaked all season I suppose. A hard thing to do on body and mind. And thanks for the explanation on the other chaps.
