A couple things here- Correction- Equinox DOES has a handsfree power tailgate with Premier model. Don't be too excited about having Evil Twin back. It will go to his head. Besides, he only shows up sporadically, I can't count on him. Something about wanting only orange peanut M&Ms. Also concerning my comments at the end, I am not going to respond to individuals claiming their cars are the most reliable and that I don't know what I'm talking about. I don't have that kind of time so here's my blanket statement on reliability. I know a number of people with engine sludge problems and transmission failures with the "most reliable Japanese" brands. I also know a Range Rover owner that has never had a single issue with their car. The most trouble free car I ever owned was a Pontiac. Owned it for 10 years and the only issue it had was a bad horn button fixed under warrantee. My wife has a five year old Kia Soul. Oil changes and a headliner recall are the only things it has needed. All of that is called anecdotal evidence. Hard data that's aggregated from thousands of vehicles suggests all modern cars are so well built these days, reliability is less of a concern. Even the manufacturers will agree with that when we're talking over a beer. Some might be better than others, but in general, not by the wide degree found 10-20 years ago. But by all means, do homework on specific models. Cars are expensive. I don't have the luxury to just say something and wish it were true. I research, talk to engineers and mechanics, call organizations like Consumer Reports and IHS to find out what's happening. It's very important to me that I provide the most accurate information possible because that opens up choices for buyers. And reliability, while extremely important, isn't the end-all-be-all for some buyers. There are very reliable cars that are hideous. I, for one, will not buy a poorly styled car or a vehicle that handles like a wet towel. While I don't use Consumer Reports as a bible, I do like this resource- bit.ly/2vJMM1N. Check it out, it's eye opening. U.S. News has a wide range of manufacturers on their top reliability list- bit.ly/2ulknMd I could go in and on. In the end, buy the car you love. It's the one you'll take care of bes and keep the longest. Thanks for reading! TV

Kudos for your comments. Maybe it's my background in journalism, but I don't care for biased reviews. In the end, it is the consumer that must do a pro and con list. I've looked for a new SUV for 6 months now. It's mind boggling. I will say after reading actual owner comments and doing various test drives and research, there are problems that arise on every model. There's also no perfect one, hence my need for a pro/con list. For me, a big thing is comfort and how the seat feels. I've spent time on test drives constantly looking for the right adjustment and never finding it. I actually miss the past where the internet didn't sway and you just saw a vehicle and said 'that's the one for me' and closed the deal. I appreciate your reviews. It's refreshing compared to some I have seen with absolute brand bias. Keep up the great job!

We just purchased a 2018 Equinox LT Awd +confidence and convenience package for our new family car. I love the infotainment system with Apple CarPlay. It’s so easy to use, and isn’t distracting. I love that I can roll down all the windows with my key fob on a hot day to start cooling the car off, and the rear air conditioning works well to cool off the back seat. That’s important to me as a mom with kids in car seats. Our previous car (2015 Hyundai Santa Fe sport) never got the back seat very cool for the kiddos. I don’t mind the auto stop feature, and the only time I actually notice it really is when I’m driving with my windows down. Thank you for your amazing reviews! I’m not a car person, but I have watched a ton of your videos because they’re very enjoyable and informative.

the auto stop Can be turn off!!! all you have to do is put it in Low drive and set your shifter all the way to 9 gear or any gear (this is why you see a plus and minus symbols on the shifter) it’s just like using regular drive but it will not engage the auto stop.

This comment section is full of foreign car fanboys. Cars built to be affordable and comfortable. All car manufacturers cut corners somewhere, that's realty. I've had my 2012 equinox for three years now and I absolutely love the car. The new one looks great, sleek and aggressive. Great work as always Tom, really enjoy you work!!

I agree on the reliability part. But now a days, it goes beyond reliability. I owned a 2007 Mazda RX-8 brand new and the build quality was very good, nevermind that it had a rotary engine. But what really stood out was the dealership experience. They picked my car from my job for maintenance and recalls and drop it right back. They will give me a loaner if it's more than one day. Not a lot of dealerships do that. I moved from Mazda to a Subaru STI and I though that quality will be different. But was a lot better. My car keep track of all maintenance schedules, stores it on the cloud via starlink. Sends me an email reminder and an explanation of why is happening. Monthly maintenance reports. I get suggestions on where to go on a road trip and get subaru discounts on hotels. It even reminded me of my birthday and had a nice happy birthday message on the infotainment screen every time I start the car. The dealership gives me a loaner for as long as I need it. It feels like they are so happy that I am part of the Subaru family. I wonder if most manufacturers offer the same quality experience through their dealership network.

There is little to no comparison between the old 2017 and earlier 2.4L and the 2018 1.5L turbo. The old 2.4-liter I-4 is rated at 182 hp and 172 lb-ft. The 2018 Equinox 1.5L turbo is rated at 170 hp and 203 lb-ft. PLUS, it's dropped 400 lbs. compared to its predecessor. According to www.fueleconomy.gov, the 2017 2.4L AWD is rated at 23 mpg combined, 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway (or; 4.3 gal / 100 miles) Fuel tank capacity in gallons: 18.8 The 2018 1.5L AWD is rated at 26 mpg combined, 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway (or; 3.8 / 100 miles). Fuel tank capacity in gallons: 15.6 Based on the numbers, I don't see where any of the pre-2018 Equinox models are superior in anything but HP, size and weight. The 2.4L is DEFINITELY more "sluggish" than the 1.5L turbo - despite more HP. www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=37464&id=38552 Granted, putting the pedal down with these two engines is akin to flogging a mule to go faster but, aside from on ramp acceleration, for city and congested suburban driving, however, these 2 engines are fine. I also want to add that the 2018 1.5L gets down the highway just fine, as well. There's plenty of ooomph when you're doing 60+ mph to get around other vehicles. The tech in the 2018 Premier trim is stellar. 6 USB ports (4 of which are data ports which can communicate directly with the MyLink system (which offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto). 2 USB data ports are located at the bottom of the center stack with one 12v outlet and wireless phone charger. 2 additional USB ports are located inside the front center console and 2 charging ports are located at the rear of the center console for rear seat passengers. A 12v outlet and a 110v electrical outlet are located at the rear of the center console and there are HVAC vents at the rear of the center console, as well, for rear seat passengers in addition to heated outboard seats AND seat backs for rear passengers and vented (aka; "cooled") front seats. A 3rd 12v outlet is located in the rear cargo are near the seatback release handles. In addition, the only thing the 2018 Equinox is missing vs. it's RAV4 and CR-V competitors is adaptive cruise control (ACC). (Unfortunately, many of these (safety, et al) features are in only available in the up-level Premier trim. I also want to mention that rear seat room with 2 full-sized adult males (225+ lbs., 6') is SPACIOUS and offers plenty of head room (despite the panoramic sunroof). The rear seating is stretch-yourself-out comfy (and offers 2 reclining positions)! The rear seats fold completely flat with automatic seat releases at the rear and opting for a panoramic sunroof or 8" MyLink screen or navigation will require the "Sun, Sound and Navigation" package. This will add the panoramic sunroof with a fully retractable shade, 19" Hankook Ventus all-season rubber affixed to upgraded wheels and an 8" MyLink screen with navigation (might I just add how awesome that HUMONGOUS sunroof is as well as that 8" MyLink screen). This (unfortunately) comes at an upcharge of ~$3,200 (available in all but the base "L" trim). The interior leather Jet Black / Brandy color scheme is head and shoulders above the 2017 RAV4 and CR-V AWD Touring (I test drove them both). However, I felt (literally, felt) the RAV4 Limited Hybrid and CR-V AWD Touring had slightly more zip to their acceleration. The 2017 RAV4 is completely outdated tech-wise, IMHO. Granted, it has ACC and fantastically reclining rear seats but its Entune seems outdated and wasn't easy to navigate and operate (potentially because I'm somewhat more familiar with GM's systems). The new 2017 CR-V's interior is dull IMHO (in particular in Ivory leather), and the CVT was absolutely driving me nuts as well as its gear shifter placement. Considering its outstanding tech, pretty darned good looks as well as its much-improved and very competitive fuel economy, I gave the 2018 Equinox the nod. The downside(s) of the 2018 Equinox: it could have a slightly more competent base engine (for that it'd need a CVT in order to maintain top competitive mpg's), higher purchase price (~$3k to $4k more in AWD Premier guise) than some of it's target competition which are available with more / all tech in all but the absolute base trim levels and less trade-in / re-sale value. Value added features such as 3 months of SeriusXM's "All Access" package and 6 months of OnStar service should be taken into account. In addition, pretty much all of GM's vehicles come with 5 year roadside assistance. (then again, one of our local Toyota dealers offers "lifetime free oil and filter changes, lifetime free state inspections (required yearly in our State), lifetime engine guarantee and service hours until 9 p.m on weekdays and even up to 5 p.m. on Sunday(!), whereas GM only offers 2 free oil changes per year for the 1st two years of ownership. Individual dealers can and will offer better service - negotiate that into the deal of your vehicle! In addition, don't be dissuaded by the ALLEGED $40k+ price tag on the "window sticker (aka; Monroney Sticker)! That's the MSRP! If anyone is paying MSRP, they either live in a location where there's only one Chevy dealership which believes it can charge its customers above and beyond what is considered "doing right by the customer", or, one is "hot to trot" on owning a new Equinox, or, one simply has not conducted sufficient pricing research (read; not a savvy car buyer / lazy). A fully loaded 2018 AWD Premier with two-tone leather, "Sun, Sound and Navigation" package and numerous accessories (roof cross rails, cargo net, all-weather / all-season front and rear floor mats, rear cargo all-weather mat, mud guards, rear bumper protector, rear cargo shade) including a $600 "dealer documentation fee" (don't get me started on that one) 4.1 % new vehicle sales tax in our State, registration / transfer of plates can be had for a hair over $37k. Sure. Lots of dollars, no doubt! However, surf on over to the Honda website and price a 2017 CR-V AWD Touring with the same options (heated steering wheel is optional and is $400+ then add labor for installation of all of these accessories), and you're scratching at $40k for a CR-V AWD Touring. Next, go to your local Honda dealer and negotiate - considering the numbers! BTW, the 2018 2.0L Equinox will require PREMIUM fuel to wring the maximum performance out of its 2L, 252 hp turbo - but it will be able to tow 3500 lbs (vs. the 1.5L and 1.6L diesel 1500 lb. tow rating, or the CR-V's and RAV4's ratings). The bottom line is that these are all incredible and incredibly nice and fairly safe vehicles. Choose the one you like above all others, in your preferred / most affordable trim level and interior, and little else will matter. Pick one everyone else says they "think" is great (and who knows whether that's based on actual hands-on experience / ownership or "just reading the reviews" and "from what they know from previous models") and you may find you don't like it near as much. Test drive each model and trim you want for yourself several times(!) and read, read, read the reviews and COMPARE with your own findings. The real bang for your buck is buying the car you BELIEVE has everything you need and REALLY want - at a good price! Some people want terrific fuel economy without going hybrid, electric or "hyper-miling". Some want the best of everything in one package. Some want a smidgeon of this and some tech to go with it. There are pros and cons to everything. Don't forget, you're the one who has to drive it and live with it every day. And, for gosh sake, remember, it's only a car. Live within your means! www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=37464&id=38552&id=38073&id=38453

Reliability even? I have a 2009 Camry and my brother has a 2010 VW CC. We bought brand new. Both have around 90k miles on them and my brother has had 5 or 6 repairs on his car all around $600 a pop. I had one. A faulty passenger door lock that doesn't work with the power locks. I kept my 600 and just lock/unlock that door manually. I'm scared of VW now. While I'm itching to upgrade, how do you get rid of a car that has never broken down on you or needed repairs besides brakes, tires and oil changes? My brother will have a new car by the end of the year. He's sick of it already.

Purchased a chevy Equinox in February 2019. It has 1,144 miles on it. Died in the middle of traffic over Memorial Day weekend. Engine/Transmission malfunction. Dealership duct taped the broken part which is on indefinite backorder. They refused me a loaner and sent me on my way. Still not functional nor safe. At second shop. It’s a known problem with no fix in sight. Still no resolution...GMC is the culprit and not authorizing assistance ..... 1,144 miles. Brand. New. Car. BBB complaint filed.

Quick question: Why is it that American cars are designated with the next year? Why is this a 2018 when you can get it now?
@rustlesee
@rustlesee 7 жыл бұрын
It's not "American cars", I believe it's more of an America thing, or possibly NA. 2018's are out now, for many manufacturers. This change over typically happens in the summer, after all the auto shows releases from the winter prior. I know some other counties don't really use model years, which makes us a little unique. Tom might have more details than I do, though.

The way I understand it, the automakers are allowed to start labeling for the next year on Jan 1. So, on the first day of January 2016, a car can be released as a 2017 model. I will do some digging to get a concrete answer.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Okay, here's the deal. The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration allows vehicles to have the next model year if manufactured after January 1st of the preceding calendar year. So, as I said, a car produced on January 1, 2017 can be sold by manufacturers as a 2018 model. Why do this? Apparently, there's research that shows there are people who enjoy having something so new, it "shouldn't even be available" yet. Automakers tend to ship the first models to dealerships very well optioned to take advantage of buyers who must have the newest of the new. That means extra profits. Also, there's a lot going on in the first quarter of the year. The Super Bowl, March Madness and all. It's a great time to market a shiny new car. And what says new better than a car with next years model designation? As a marketing move it all makes perfect sense. Hope this helps.

Not true. I found AWD for $25K brand new this month on 2019 Equinox. Some youtube reviews make some errors in trim info. I did my research. I found it on the Equinox LT and priced it with local dealers so I know it's that price. AWD in LT trim can also come with Nav and Sunroof for $27K. Premier features are nice but you can get well stocked for under $28K.

It's because American car companies just can't get the design language down, their stuff tends to come out looking cheap. Lincoln might be getting there with the interior of the new Continental and the CT6 isn't bad, looks great outside but the interior while nice isn't as good as the Europeans. It's laughable when you put a $100,000 Cadillac Escalade next to a $100,000 Range Rover and see just how much better the Range Rover looks inside and outside vs the Escalade, not even close.

I (and a few of my engineer friends) would argue the Volt has the best plug-in hybrid system money can buy right now and the Bolt EV is the best affordable electric vehicle available on the market. There's a good chance that Tesla has a winner with the Model 3 but I'll wait until I can drive one (and see if there are any issues after 6 months on the market).

I hate start stop, I hated it in mercedes when it started, and at first I avoided the company car for this reason, then it started spreading, and now everything has it, I hate it, If I want to save fuel I buy a hybrid, so if I wanna help the environment, as a CT6 owner, I can´t stand it, and lately they are choosing to completely remove the option of turning it off...
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 7 жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean and like all humans, wish there were options to turn it off. For grins, you should try this one. Martin, the guy that drives for me when I shoot the running footage, didn't notice it for the first 10 minutes. GM does an exceptionally good job on a tech that will be required by all cars in the future.

Driven Car Reviews So you see by putting an underpowered Turbo 4 cylinder in a vehicle that big is a step up over a NA 2.4? Well I guess to each his own. Lifting 400 lbs is amazing although, the previous one got decent gas milage so it doesn't say anything to me directly.
