(Kim Dong-ryul): In 2014, after releasing the "Donghaeng" album, we toured, and the following year, we held a major concert. After all that, I fell into a slump. 김동률 (Kim Dong-ryul): The concerts and the album were successful, but why the slump? 김동률 (Kim Dong-ryul): I think it was during the 2015 concert, perhaps while singing the encore, when I was suddenly overwhelmed by the beauty and happiness of the moment. I thought of the countless audience members, my band who have been with me for so long, and the unseen individuals who prepared hard for this concert. I realized how much I had received and felt truly blessed. Yet, nothing lasts forever. What else can I achieve? How far can I go? How much can I desire? Maybe I peaked long ago. I've been focusing solely on album production and concerts. Many want me to release albums more often, perform more frequently, or even appear on variety shows. But time feels limited even just doing what I'm good at. 황성제 (Hwang Seong-je): If there's something different about working with Dong-ryul compared to others, it's his meticulous nature. He's always striving to be more precise. Even though we're only a year apart in age, I feel he's much more experienced in life. 김동률 (Kim Dong-ryul): When I was going through a tough time, I confided in Seong-je over drinks, and he asked me to share my saved demo tracks. 황성제 (Hwang Seong-je): At that time, Dong-ryul seemed to have many concerns and lacked confidence, right? When I heard "Contact", an idea struck me on how it should flow. Starting with even a single track could motivate us. 김동률 (Kim Dong-ryul): Within a week, he came back with a nearly completed arrangement. Listening to it stirred deep emotions I had forgotten about. Before, working on music felt like completing a task. Now, it felt exciting and ignited my passion. 박인영 (Park In-young): When I was approached to work on the "Reply" album, I agreed immediately without hesitation. I believed it would be a beneficial and enriching experience. Although Kim Dong-ryul might be my junior, I deeply respect him as a musician. 정수민 (Jeong Su-min): He seems like a tsundere (cold on the outside, warm inside). He might appear stoic and not talk much during work, but sometimes he discreetly provides food. 김동률 (Kim Dong-ryul): My friend, Subin, is relatively new to music. When he works with us, he shines brightly, eager to learn everything. It reminds me of my early days when I was also passionate. 박인영 (Park In-young): Dong-ryul is already exceptional in music, but I hope he doesn't feel lonely on his journey. He's a perfectionist, often taking on a lot by himself, which can be isolating. I hope that, surrounded by good people, he can share and create music for a long time. 김동률 (Kim Dong-ryul): In-young and I have shared concerns only the two of us understand. We both work with strings and orchestras and have similar tendencies. Having someone to share these in-depth conversations with makes a significant difference. Working with Seong-je, Subin, and In-young brought back memories of my early days of intense musical passion. It helped me overcome some of my slumps and made me realize that I had taken for granted the support and love from those around me. I recently released a song called "Song", and to my surprise, many of my acquaintances reached out to me. I hadn't expected such a response since it was a personal song. Maybe it's okay to be unique in my journey. Maybe it's alright to be different. 황성제 (Hwang Seong-je): When I see such a brotherly figure, we, the younger generation, especially ones like me, feel a stronger pillar of support because of having such a senior. It might be apt to say, the musician Kim Dong-ryul embodies the artisan spirit akin to a Japanese udon restaurant owner. It's okay if his music doesn't change too much. Offering subtle changes within that consistency serves as an inspiration to us younger musicians. It would be great if he remains that inspirational figure in music for us. 김동률 (Kim Dong-ryul): With every album release, there's always this point raised about my music always being the same. Every time I hear such comments, I find it confusing. Are they implying a lack of progress or a lack of change? Though they might sound similar, they seem different to me. If what they mean is a lack of change, then I wonder, why should there be a change? In today's world, many things change rapidly. Personally, I'd prefer if the things I love remained unchanged - be it an artist, an author, cityscapes, or even the taste of my favorite restaurant. With so many excellent options available, why would anyone expect a single person to encompass it all? Doing what one excels at is challenging enough. Thus, rather than changing for the sake of change, I'd prefer to continue in my style, showcasing the effort I put into it. This probably reflects my perspective on music. And this also applies to those who have long appreciated or once appreciated my music. Even if they don't actively listen or seek my songs now, should they chance upon my new music or news about me, they might think, "The artist I once loved is still devotedly making his music just as he used to." Wouldn't that offer a sense of relief? A reassurance that their past admiration wasn't in vain? I wish to provide that consistent feeling until the end. So, my current mantra is: Both as an individual and a musician, I want to age gracefully. It's about wanting to age well.
