2018 Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin Adventure Sports Review: I was lucky enough to ride the original Africa Twin just after it was first launched, I thought it was a nice enough bike but didn't have high expectations for the Adventure Sport. How wrong I was! The new for 2018 Adventure Sports version could just be the ideal big adventure bike for the real world rider.....

It's got a brap to the exhaust note... My buddy says it's too loud as he has a triumph 955i tiger with a stock muffler.. ..i say too Fu€kin bad. Triumph recommends Arrow brand exhaust but d.j. can make Lincoln cry pinching pennies for last 12 years as rides the triumph

Great review, being a Honda fan and an 2016 Africa Twin dct owner I just love these bikes together with the performance and sound of this engine. If you can’t afford the new price then the earlier 2016/7 bikes are coming on the used market at attractive prices and are just as much fun and it’s still the same power engine in them.

I’ve always had sports bikes and fast nakeds, adventure bikes have always been off the radar for me but a friend told me to ride one which I did yesterday (this bike) and was blown away. The way the roads and limits are now this makes perfect sense for me..... and going away. Such a fun bike ✌️

I'm 5'8 too and today I had a go at this bike with the standard seat on its high position (stupid me) and it was the tallest bike I've ever ridden. Scary stuff. Apart from that, I loved the engine, the geometry and overall quality of build. Top choice at this price and holding value well in the UK. Secondhand ones still going for big money. If you like that you'll love the Guzzi Stelvio too for £7K ish... if you can live with its quirky looks! which I can. *you should do a video about the second-hand market. Super cool subject as you can get so much for your cash lately!

Having watched this review and the review of the DCT version... I went out and bought a new 2019 Adventure sport DCT. My first new bike, living in australia I commute on it every day and have toured on it 2up all within the first 4 weeks.. The DCT is brilliant the bike is a head Turner and such a pleasure to ride in the dry dusty conditions here.... heading to Uluru at Easter for 2 weeks and 7,000klm. These review are spott on... thanks and keep up the great work.

Glad you enjoyed the big Honda. For me it would have to be the DCT version as after 35 years of commercial driving my days of playing tunes on gearboxes are over. How does low down pulling power compare to your GS? On a different note ,you should get together with old Teapotone and try out each machines to see what difference rider size makes.

I test rode one last week, lovely bike I was amazed how you build speed without noticing it the wind protection is much better than the standard model. Two little niggles I found are no cruise control like you said which is a shame and the button for the heated grips is realy small and hard to push with thick gloves. Brilliant review once again TMF, take care :)

I'm glad to see Honda is continuing to improve the AT, it's a great platform. They added a larger tank, which is very necessary. Shocks dive too much, and not the only one to say so. I heard they were going to offer better suspension and other goodies as an option.

Test rode one the other week. Fantastic machine. I’m very tempted. Finally may have found the bike to replace my blackbird. I’m 5’6” on a good day, with a 27” inside leg; and had no issues with the low seat fitted. The screen on the other hand caused a lot of buffeting. Easily fixed with a shorter screen no doubt.

I have had the bike now for three days and no time yet to leave town for a ride into the surrounding country back roads as we have 1000's of miles in all directions. So far I have just over 100 miles on the odometer of stop and go city traffic lights and stop signs with the wheel of fire icon on the dashboard flashing at me constantly and continues to cause the engine to misfire. This happens now all the time with the front wheel off the pavement at about two inches or so with the sound of a rubber tire squeeling as my back tire tries to spin as the bike is trying to wheelie over but the traction control as described comes default setting at maximum and will not allow the bike to do anything illegal except breaking all speed limits. So on a few side streets I have registered so far up 104 on the digital speedometer read out in miles per hour ...and as hard as it is not to jump up this second grab the keys and go for another burst around the block, I guess I must open the owners manual to learn how to turn off all the buttons that is forcing it to go slow

Just test rode an AT 2016, new GS1200 and KTM 1090 S and I agree that the AT is probably the best value for money. People need to add overall COO (Cost of ownership) including parts and accessories which all add up. With the money saved you can buy tubeless rims if it's a concern and still have plenty left for actually going on a long trip. But yes, the GS is amazing.

Great Review as usual, I've put 16000 miles on 2017 DCT so far and still stand by my claim that that of all the bikes I've owned it is the best for the job I use it for, 95% perfect 95% of the time..

How are the spokes holding up?
@mattnicholas9842
@mattnicholas9842 6 жыл бұрын
I did say 95% perfect.... 5 things I hate.... 1. The spokes are pants, i'm on my second set of rims and they are minging now, I gave up and had a set made in stainless and re-laced the rims (with funky red alloy nipples) I think the 2018 has stainless now.... 2. The traction control is way too sensitive, on its lowest setting it can still interfere if you nail it from the lights (even in the dry), again I think the 2018 has 7 positions..... 3. The speedo (and therefore odometer) over reads by 10% this can only be deliberate act to generate revenue, I have fitted a 15 tooth front sprocket and a speedo healer..... 4. The outside temperature reads 2 degrees high..... why ?. 5. A lot of the fasteners are corroding a bit, I don't expect this from Honda on a premium priced product.... All quite petty (but unecessary).... still love hooning around on a big motocross bike..

I have a 2017 manual AT, I like it a lot. There are 2 things that will determine whether I trade up to a 2020. Cruise control and cruise control, otherwise I'll keep the 2017. Something less important but comforting, tubeless tires. 1.) There's more selection 2.) A slow leak or a simple plug won't ruin an otherwise great day.

Thanks TMF for your great review. I pretty much concur after riding a demo last week. I was a so impressed I bought one today. With a sunny day I did find the rev counter difficult to see, to the point I had to take my eyes off the road to find it on the screen. But for my Kind of riding I’m not sure how important the rev counter really is anyway. Rarely do I get close to red line. When these bikes first came out they were hard to find, now it seems Honda has a surplus inventory of them and are cutting prices on unsold models.

always a little nervous listening to reviews about the africa twin as so many people try to compare to the BMW GSA. very nice review and which i believe was very honest. i liked the original africa twin but was torn by the GSA. i held off to see what would come next and glad i did.

I was quite surprised to see you riding this, TMF, given that other reviewers made a point of the incredible seat height, but, just like the KTM 1090, I see you managed to snag a rideable one for people that aren't 2 metres tall.

Yes, I wouldn’t have been comfortable on the bike without the low seat though....

Cheers, I've been waiting for this one! I am the same height as you and when I test rode it, I had the medium seat and the turbulence on the top of my helmet was horrendous, so low seat clearly the way to go. Everything else I loved, but I decided it would be waste to not take this off road ( which I probably wouldnt) so have turned my eye to the Tracer 900GT. Reviewing this anytime soon? 👍

Great review as always. Love this thing but haven’t done the miles on my 2017 Africa Twin to warrant the cost of an upgrade! Plus the wife tells me I’d need to find somewhere else the live! 🤔

TMF, I'm hoping you're working your contacts to get your hands on the new 2020 Honda Africa Twin CRf1000 adventure sport with the updated engine, ES adjustable suspension and all the other electronics goodies. Honda finally added cruise control, spoked tubeless tires and lower seat options for those of vertically challenged. Finally a serious Japanese competitor to the likes of R1250GS, KTM & Multstrada. Keep up the good work!
