As promised, here is the next truck featured in the medium duty truck review series. This is an Isuzu NPR-HD that is rated for 14.5k lbs. It has the 5.2L 4HK1 4-cylinder Turbo Diesel, which is the highest engine option for this truck. It also can come with a 3.0L turbo diesel as well as a 6.0L GM sourced V8 gas. Mated to the engine is an Aisin 465 6-Speed Automatic transmission. This particular truck has a 16ft Aluminum Morgan body and a 2000lbs Maxon Liftgate
Many people overlook these trucks in a this class of vehicles. Competitive to the 4500/F450 and Hino 155, these trucks really standout with their long history of being extremely reliable. If you want a truck that workers can abuse and mistreat, ignore maintenance, and keep in the fleet for over 20 years/300k mi, this is the truck that will do it.
Pros:
Very Good Maneuverability
Great Fuel Mileage
Legendary Reliability and Durability
Powerful
Cons:
Weak Engine Brake
Aging Cab
Low/Vulnerable air intake
No 4x4 available
Ryder Review: Although I had initially order a 26ft, I was advised a day before arrival that my assigned truck was out of service for transmission issues. I was asked if I would be ok with a 16ft, with no other option with any other company I had to say yes. There was only one available and it was at the mercy of the previous user returning it during overnight drop off. Ryder also requires you pay for a full week of service with the truck as a deposit, and for this particular truck it is in excess of $1,000 even for just one day. So be sure to keep that in mind when renting. I was not given any kind of discount for not being given the right truck. The truck was also fairly dirty inside the cab and box.

Your right about that blind spot, I’ve given a couple drivers a good scare because of that. 😂 I’ve found that checking the lowest part of the window where it curves down eliminates that blind spot as you are able to see most cars through it

I work for ryder, the Isuzus like this are by far the most reliable trucks you can get these days. I can’t say I’ve seen an engine or transmission failure on one of these yet. Just oil changes, tires & brakes really. Even very few issues with emission systems. I always recommend these to customers when they ask what they should get, if it’s practical for them.

Yeah, but for how long do you keep them in the fleet? As they are getting older or used, you guys begin to sell them. How many miles on them when you get rid of them?
@HondaRedneck16

@@Gabriellariz depends on the customer, but most are turned in around 200k, but we have some customers running older models with 300-400k. Don’t see them too much either, other than for basic maintenance. I know In the industry that isn’t a whole lot but most of our costumers are doing a mix of city & high way driving.

I'm looking for a new truck to replace my Sprinter van..... I am a remodel contractor.... I am thinking about getting into a box truck with lift gate and side door. I would be buying new or something a few years old.... What are your thoughts? How are the maintenance costs on the NPR-HD Isuzu? Thanks.
@crazyjdkid
@crazyjdkid 5 жыл бұрын
I am honestly not completely sure how maintenance costs are, but I imagine they would be similar to your Sprinter. And it greatly depends on the engine and how good you take care of it, 5.2L Diesel vs 6.0 Gas. With modern diesel emissions you have to be a bit more aware of how you treat it. The overall body and interior are extremely rugged, and are designed to essentially last forever. I had one at work pushing 300k.

Very informative. I'm in the market for 2 box trucks ( 16" and 14" ) for our business and not very knowledgeable when it comes to this industry. What would you say is the best bang for your buck when it comes to box trucks and should I worry if I purchase a used Isuzu with 150k miles ?
@crazyjdkid
@crazyjdkid 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of it comes down to what you plan to use it for! If your just zipping around a few cities job to job, these are great trucks! If you are traveling like 600 miles at a time I would look at something else. With these Izusu's the truck and chassis usually outlive whatever body is mounted to it. The gas versions have a design life of about 200,000 miles. The diesel versions, like the one in the video, have a B10 life of 375,000 miles. That means that 90% of the trucks will reach 375,000 miles without any major failure. I have personally been in one that hit 400k, and it had absolutely no issues. With modern emissions on diesels though you need to be cautious and ensure drivers understand the systems and how they operate. One mistake will cost you a small fortune. Although deleting the exhaust is always an option too. Otherwise, I would have no worries buying an Isuzu with 150k, medium duty trucks like this are designed and rated for a lot more than a standard car. That's still young for a medium duty truck.

@@crazyjdkid thanks. It would mainly be used to move around in the city and move furniture, file cabinets , refrigerators, and etc... From our child care centers. They are selling me a used 2013 with 118k miles , we are adding a new liftgate and they are trying to sell me on the 3 yr /90k mile warranty ($3k included in price) for $27,499 before taxes and fees here in California. What do you think ?

@@kI2ispi That would be a great application for this truck. So with that I have two questions! Is it diesel or gas? Also, if it is diesel does the extra warranty cover all the emissions related components?

I think it would probably be worth it to get the coverage. Those parts can be expensive if you are replacing them out of pocket. Just 2 or 3 of those parts would push you over 3k if they were to break. Thats not me saying they would break, its just would be nice as a business operator for you knowing the truck won't cost you in repairs for 3 years. Everything breaks no matter the manufacturer. But as I said earlier, the key factor here is ensuring your operator understands how the diesel exhaust system works and never mixes up the diesel and the DEF fluid. Thats a $10k mistake that no warranty will cover. Don't let that scare you through, thousands of these truxks run every single day without any issues. Let me know if you uave questions!

Well I had about 3000 lbs of household goods in it and the lift on the back weighs about 550lbs. I drove it for about 100 miles, mixed city and highway and the average didn't move much. And I didn't reset the trip so most of that information is from the previous driver. These trucks aren't cheap to rent so I imagine the other driver had it loaded up too. Going off of filling it at the pump with diesel I got about 11.5 to 12 mpg (US). That being said I am pretty heavy footed, I have videos on my channel of driving this truck. Thanks for watching!

These Isuzu need a Manual transmission.
@crazyjdkid
@crazyjdkid 5 жыл бұрын
They use to be available with a manual, but they stopped with the manuals a few years ago. With most of these trucks operating in tight cities I would imagine the automatic was much more favorable. I liked the transmission in this truck, it's built by Aisin and performed very well. Much better than an Eaton, although I don't think it was as refined as an Allison.
