Kawasaki’s Z900RS features the same liquid-cooled 948cc in-line four-cylinder four-stroke 16-valve powerplant as the Z900, with a bore and stroke of 73.4 x 56mm. The engine features revised camshaft profiles and timing, along with a reduced compression ratio (10.8:1 v 11.8:1) to aid a wide-spread power curve. Downdraft throttle-bodies are used, with a 36mm throttle bore and sub-throttles, for sensitive throttle response and good low speed and small throttle opening response.
Intake and exhaust valves are 29mm and 24mm respectively, with cast pistons manufactured with the same technique and materials used in the H2R, while cylinders are die-cast and feature an open-deck design. A secondary balancer eliminating excess vibration and a heavier flywheel (12%).
Intake funnels help deliver both performance and a strong intake sound or ‘howl’ on aggressive throttle openings and acceleration. The exhaust is a tuned four-into-one that actually has fake outer tubes to give the bike a tougher look. The outer tubes are 38.1mm, while the inner tubes are 28.6mm to increase mid-range. The Z900 headers are 35mm.
Over 20 variations of the exhaust were considered before the final one was chosen. The exhaust pre chamber is specifically designed to give a nice rumble at idle, on start up and low speed when the rider can hear it. The gasses essentially escape through a straight line but as rpm increases, thus gasflow, the exhaust gasses are routed via a muffler to keep sound level legal. Pretty smart thinking!
Short gear ratios from first to fifth and a sixth gear overdrive ensure a strong and punchy mid-range, without losing highway cruising capability. First gear is shorter than on the Z900 by one tooth on the drive gear, while a longer top gear (30/29 - 29/30) enables lower rpm at highway speeds. Final gearing is also taller than the Z900 (two teeth down on the back). An assist and slipper clutch is also featured.
The Z900 high-tensile steel trellis frame design is retained, and uses five rigid-mount points with the engine as a stressed member, but was completely redesigned to accommodate the teardrop tank. To give the bike a flatter more upright stance the front was raised and the rear lowered. Steering offset is increased by 6mm, interestingly reducing trail, in this case helping make the steering lighter.
An extruded aluminium swingarm weighs just 3.9kg and the sub-frame is a twin-tube design, which like the frame itself has been designed to follow straight lines, with as small bend angles as possible, for optimised stress dispersal.
41mm USD forks include stepless rebound damping and preload adjustability via the left fork cap, while the rear shock is a monoshock with linkage above the swingarm to reduce heat transfer from the exhaust, and features rebound and preload adjustability. Twin shocks were not considered as Kawasaki engineers wanted a good handling bike.
Brakes are four-piston monoblock radial-mount calipers with sintered brake pads on the front, with 300mm rotors, while the rear is a 250mm rotor with single-piston caliper. ABS is standard thanks to a Nissin unit and the master-cylinder is a radial-pump item. The wheels are flat spoke cast alloy items.
A 795mm seat height offers an easy reach to the ground, with the footpeg, seat to handlebar ergonomics designed to offer a sport-naked feel.
A stacked dash is also featured, with an LCD central screen, surrounded by an analogue-style tachometer, while the Kawasaki ‘Economical Riding Indicator’ lets you know when you’re not using enough throttle and having enough fun.

Little late on the comment, but Jeff is on of my favorite reviewers/riders on youtube. He rides great and tells it like it is.I already have a Z900 and bought an RS a couple months ago. This bike is excellent. All around one of the best bikes I've ever owned. The fit and finish is superb. Sound is pure music. The blue paint is what drew me to it.Will be keeping this one.

I bought mine a couple of weeks ago and I’ve done 2,400 kms on it as of today in Melbourne’s great weather we’re having. The throttle on mine is definitely snatchy. Apparently some are and some aren’t. I hope they’ll be able to reflash the ECU at a later date. Apart from that I love the bike. Who cares if people whinge at the price. The bike is not for them. Personally I think it’s a reasonable price when you’re comparing it with others like the Thruxton for example. Highly recommended. If you can get one that is, the next batch is just about all pre-sold from what I’ve heard.

Well, I fixed the snatchy throttle. Came across the Booster Plug a month ago which quite ingeniously richens the mixture at low throttle openings, but the mixture is normal at all other times. It’s transformed the bike. I’ve done 4,500 kms on the bike so far and absolutely love it. A few others on the Z900RS forum have bought a Booster Plug and it’s fixed their throttle problem as well. It’s made in Denmark and cost around $200 including air freight. www.boosterplug.com/shop/cms-21.html

It's beautiful and for those of us of a Certain Age..... put it this way: My uncle took me on a Z-1 in 1973 I was 8 years old. He took it up to about 95 and I was hooked. Test rode one of these today .................... did 50 or so kays on it over central NSW roads so not many corners but plenty of bumps and 100 zones. This thing is purely wicked .............. cannot think of any other way to put it. You can ride very sedately in town at legal town speeds. Go a little further afield and it sits on 80 ridiculously easily, and get to the open road and 'bob is your uncle', it does that damn easy as well in terms of sitting at speed. You do not have to work the bike to maintain a legal or near legal pace and nor do you work yourself, the feedback is positive and immediate. For me, I even found visor up to around 110kmh (I do wear glasses) a possibility although at that speed the wind is catching the raised visor and starting to be felt, but lower that to 60 and you could ride all day with visor up (again, I wear glasses so have added protection). The bars are perfect for me and the seat very comfortable for the ride I undertook. The motor is easily the best that I have ridden. Tractable, no snatching or hesitation and pull .............. as the saying goes 'pulls harder than a 15 year old boy watching the playboy channel'. Under hard acceleration and small bumps I had the front skipping a little and when I played a little it did stretch the arms in 2nd and 3rd in particular (to do this in 4th was to risky - I need my licence). Watching the analogue instruments is, to say the least, so bloody fantastic. To watch the needle of the speedo move with the speed it does is a sight for sore eyes (not because of the wind mind) and for me, the instruments work very well with the digital panel. The gearbox was a little notchy but would loosen up as the bike did only had 360kms when I took it out but I suspect half the issue wast hat my usual ride is a DL650 so having to get my timing and feet position etc. Suspension felt good, like really good. The dealer lets me take bikes often and I have a small piece of road in a 100kmh zone that has a few small sweepers that are very bumpy, so I use them for a guide. On this thing it was rock solid at speeds of 100 (with a slight +) and felt like it was on rails despite my deliverately aiming for the bumps. Sure it let you know that there were bumps but it did not push me offline nor bounce the bike. I have done the same with other bikes (DL1000 amongst them) and they do not come close although immediately after the test I took the same turns with my DL650 and would say that it was equal or close to the Zed. The only niggles I noticed were the kind that would be overcome with familiarity. The first being the wider front tyre and handling in roundabouts (where tested corners or good corners are scarce) and the left switchblock where twice I bumped the horn trying to get the blinker on, but I still do this oneth DL from time to time so as I said, minor and familiarity. i ended up giving the keys back somewhat reluctantly as this was the first bike that I have tested that I jumped on and was comfortable immediately (for some reason reminds me of my old ZR7) and will admit outright that I gives me that 'kapow' factor that I like in bikes. Not sure if I want to spend just yet as I also want to test the Cafe so time will tell but I can see how this thing gets the raves it doesn

The body work is similar to year one Z1 but it has so much more bling. And that lovely sound from four pipes is nothing like the original. I had a second year Z1 that I put 40K on in four years. Very expensive to keep on the road: tires, chains, sprockets and surprisingly pipes. I was doing a lot of short trips and the pies totally went twice on me. Great tourer though. It never took long to get anywhere.

From the first time I laid eyes on this bike, I wanted one. First test ride and I was disappointed. I assume it was just my particular body shape/size, but the buffeting on my helmet was something I could not live with. I do suffer from mild vertigo, and I walked away shattered. I even went for a 2nd test ride months latter to try and talk myself into one, but I couldn't. I decided I will forever enjoy looking at it but could never own one. Still not over it. :( I've ridden a lot of bikes over the years. Few cause helmet buffering as this one did. Did I mentioned I'm shattered. :( Maybe the fly screen off of the Cafe model might do the trick? Might book me another test ride. :)

Hi John, I have a broken left foot and broken right knee! It's just how I have to ride... It's all fine, even on the racetrack. I just wear out a lot of boots and toe sliders! Thanks for caring though, cheers.

nice bike but over priced, it should be a similar price to the z900.
@NigelGriff

Holy shit, that's almost $5000 more expensive than the Z900. You could own a Ninja 1000 for that price which is far more motorcycle than the Z900RS. Seriously steep price for the cafe style.

The RS should deffo cost more than the Z900, as it has better brakes, better suspension, more electronics...but i agree the price difference is a bit to much.

Yeah I feel the same here in Mexico it came at $16,000 USD that doesn't make any sense, official price was 12,000 usd which I think it was ok

I'm in the same boat - was really waiting for this bike to come out, but seeing the price tag... it's just a little too much. In California it is $11,000 USD, which is around $14,000 AUD as per current conversion rate. Not sure why Australians have to pay an extra 4 grand on that :( XSR900 is so much better in terms of value for money - looks wise, it is quite confused, but performance wise it's fantastic. Just struggle to justify spending another $6000-7000 on a bike that is marginally better specs wise and mostly for the looks.

D’ont touch it, that snappy throttle is downright dangerous, I have owned the gsx-S 1000, with a snappy throttle,SUZUKI never took responsibility. Why should we, as bike enthusiasts, be willing to put right the shortcomings of manufacturers

Indeed, I did a testride three years ago and de snatchy throttle from de z900rs was really very annoying. Especially, for that price, Kawasaki could have fixed it, but it still seems the same with the newer models.

Next time don’t try to please the brand and be honest, mate. This bike has a piss-poor throttle response, but very few publications have the balls to admit it.

We have already addressed this multiple times. Our bike had a fantastic throttle, very little snatch, seems that some are worse than others. We don't try to please any brands, only our readers. Thanks. Jeff.
