Apple finally updated the Mac mini after its four years without an update. The 2018 Mac mini brings a lot of options that should fit the needs of most casual and pro users depending on the workload. In this video I show how the new Mac mini performs when tethered to an eGPU and without an eGPU when running Final Cut Pro X, geekbench and more. #macmini #Apple #macOS #FCPX

Got the 2018 i7 64gb ram 500gb SSD, paired with a blackmagic EGPU Radeon pro 580 8gb. I use it with Premiere and After Effects, currently editing an hour long multicam project with 3 blackmagic pocket 4ks in BRAW. The performance is amazing, so good.

I've just got the i5 base model as I think that's the best value plus I got 150 cashback. I'll upgrade the ram later. Main reason I'm ok with that is I've got the HP Omen eGPU box with a RX580 and a 1TB SSD inside of that. Do wish the i5 had hyperthreading but six cores is still pretty good and not all apps use hyperthreading. Nice thing with this combo is I've got mac OS for work on a desktop grade CPU and then a 50GB windows partition for gaming. VMs stored on the external ssd in the Omen. Still got about 100GB on the internal so anything that can take advantage of the internal speeds I still can.

I suggest to upgrade only the CPU. Thunderbolt 3 is 40 Gbit/sec fast. Which is unbelievable. You can install programs into a Thunderbolt SSD disk and run them from there. It is much cheaper. The RAM from Apple is very expensive too. If it is ECC it is not expensive. But I doubt it is the premium ErrorCorectingCode RAM like that of Mac Pro. The 100$ 10Gbit Ethernet isn't expensive. But if you don't really need it now, you can buy a Thunderbolt adapter to 10Gbit Ethernet later. Thunderbolt is very versatile.

Only the RAM is upgradeable, from what I´ve seen. If you can show a video of a CPU upgrade of the 2018 Mac Mini, I´d consider it.

I own one of these i7, 256GB storage and 16 GB memory. It was ordered as the NY event closed and the store came online, so I have had mine about as long as anyone not getting a preview from Apple would. It replaced a MacBook Pro 13" Retina 2015 generation. I have not seen the high temperatures you describe as "always" on the top of your device. I have tried it sitting as you have and usually have it vertical in a metal stand and it has never gotten hot or even warm. My usage is not so much video editing, but I do rip and transcode BluRay and DVD files with Handbrake and have heard the fans spin up, but not anything too excessive. The rest of my use is pretty common apps and Parallels running Windows 10 Pro. I commonly multitask my Mac mini with multiple windows open to include streaming media (KZfaq TV, for example) and any number of other apps. I would suggest you might check with Apple regarding the heat you are measuring on the device as maybe there is a problem. The mini should also be more robust than using a laptop as the CPU is a desktop grade and not a mobile processor version like the MBP. I am considering an eGPU but want to wait and see what the best combo is before buying. I would love to see a combo hub/eGPU in a housing that matches the mini's size and shape. It does not have to be a bleeding edge GPU, just a decent discrete one. Finally there are many of us who want a Mac but do not want a laptop or an iMac. The mini is quite good as a headless Mac that can be used with any display. Mine is connected to an H-P 32" UHD display which is well suited to my use. Some users concerned about security also do not have to worry about mic or camera hacking as there is not one of either built in.

Thank you Soooo much for this video. You more than answered my question. I just bought a 15 inch MBP w/ 16GB RAM. But the 2018 Mac mini came up on my radar & I was thinking about swapping while still in my return period. I just started my own KZfaq channel and use iMovie currently. However, I know Final Cut will be in my future. After watching several vids on KZfaq about the weak graphic card on the Mini, I was debating if investing in a eGPU was worth the cost or just stick with the MBP. The MBP is still more expensive. But the price difference, even with 3rd party RAM & eGPU added, is worth keeping the MBP. I love the display on it. I love the Touch Bar & Touch ID. But mostly, I just cannot give up my mobility to edit anywhere on my laptop. Thanks again!👍

Well, Apple is really pricing themselves out for so many people. I'm a big Mac OS fanboy, but once they announced this little thing, I built myself a PC. First one since 2008. It has 8th gen i7, gtx1080, 32gb of ram, water cooled, 1tb nvme ssd and a big, fat and beautiful case. It costs less then your mini, and is way more powerful. I'm done with Apple tax, especially since my keyboard on MBP failed 4 (FOUR!) times. I was glad to pay up when everything worked, but it doesn't anymore. And T2 kernel panics are a nightmare as well. I will wait 3-4 years, then I will check macs again, since I love Mac OS so much. If Apple doesn't reverse course, well, I will keep up with windows. I would like to use Manjaro Linux, but Unity3D isn't that great on Linux :(

Do this....spec out one of these how you want it, but remember to do it the cost effective way and get 8gb of RAM and upgrade it yourself (you can save $400 upgrading to 32gb on your own for example). Go with 512gb SSD and run an external one for regular files and data, and save a crap ton of money. Pick an eGPU (I suggest the Razer Core X for $300) and a graphics card (the RX580 he used is a great card for the price around $200). If you want to go with an Ultrawide Monitor, throw that in on the price. And heck, throw in a keyboard and mouse while your at it. Then spec out an iMac Pro or MacBook Pro with similar specs. You will be save over $2k on the iMac Pro and about $1000-$1500 on a MacBook Pro. And in both cases have a better system that you can upgrade the monitor and video card whenever you feel like it. So when you compare Apples to Apples you see very easily that the new Mac Mini isn't all that expensive when you consider it's a "Pro Device". Use the Pro Device term and this device makes much more sense.

What Apple is doing now is giving us options. I used to have a MacBook Pro for the very reason you stated. But I no longer need portability and I want the small form factor and upgradability of this Mac Mini, I can use whatever monitor I want (and I want to use an UltraWide) and I can use whatever GPU I want, even Nvidia cards can be used with a workaround. People don't need to argue about these devices, you simply need to sit down and weigh out the pros and cons and pick the one that best suits your needs.

I keep looking at this Mac Mini. First off, thank you for the video, comparing it to other models with & without an eGPU. My current Mac is an iMac 5K late 2014 model. No longer under warranty and suffering from over heating. It's already had it's heat sync replaces, along with other parts, while it was under warranty. Of course right after the warranty expired, the issues returned. Wondering if I should try having my current iMac repaired (may or may not cost a lot) or if I should invest in a high-end Mac Mini or wait to see what the rumored Mac Pro will bring. I mostly just watch streamed games on Twitch while maybe messing around in Photoshop or playing a little Ark (back when Ark actually worked flawlessly on my iMac, but patches broke the game).

I am in the same boat as you are. Currently running things for my video editing off the early MacBook Air. Now, thinking of upgrading to the base model Mac mini and going for an eGPU solution. Sonnet has good options (especially if you are on a budget) and from there, you can add any GPU that is in your budget and requirements. Also, if your work is mainly photo, eGPU won't change anything. Photoshop is CPU heavy and hardly uses GPU (internal or external)

Good video, however an i5/i7 Mac mini with 32GB/64GB RAM and an eGPU outperforms any iMac and even equals the new i9/Vega 20 MacBook Pro - once you factor in thermal throttling for intensive applications then the Mac mini outperforms that too. My i5 Mac mini, 32GB, benchmarks with a Gigabyte RX580 box equals the top end MacBook Pro that costs twice the price. Don't underestimate the 2018 Mac mini - a 64GB i7 Mac mini with a Vega 64 eGPU would get scores in the range of: Geekbench 4 5,800 single core/27,000 multi core; Heaven Benchmark (ultra settings) 80fps+/score 2000+ - easily outperforming any Mac short of the iMac Pro.

@@talent103 Everything depends on your uses, but the iMAC has the 7th generation CPU whereas the new Mac Mini has the 8th generation - there's significant differences (some benchmarks show around 40% difference) in these processors. In 2019, I wouldn't buy a 7th generation Intel CPU. Also, the Mac Mini SSD is extremely fast and the Mac Mini main board can take more RAM if you need it. I had huge problems with a noisy fan after adding an SSD to a pre-existing HDD, fitting dual drives in a mid-2011 model. Only a small improvement was made when alone leaving the SSD in there. As long as I don´t run a lot of video the noise is subtle. Of course, the speed of an SSD was and is very noticeable. I later chose a rather expensive route in adding to add external SSDs in a thunderbolt bay, to dual-boot systems, e.g. other versions of OS, Windows, Linux etc. No doubt USB C will bring closer alternatives to connecting directly to the internal PCI port or a - non-existing - eSATA port.

I would say the iMac line has a way better value. I can see why you'd go with the Mac Mini, especially if you already have a monitor, but I'd still go with the iMac Pro and just use an external display if desired. People don't really need a "portable desktop" unless they're moving it consistently around the house like I am with my iMac 27" 5K, up and down the stars, from my studio to the living room, gets annoying.

We bought a 27 inch 2010 iMac. The video board died two years ago and Apple doesn't support it any longer. I have talked about getting it repaired but it's not really worthwhile. So a great 27 inch display is gathering dust in the basement. The things that break on MacBook Pros: keyboards, inverters, displays, graphics chips. I work at home and at the office and could just take the Mini back and forth.

What resolution are you able to achieve with the LG 34WK95U-W and Sonnet eGPU, and which port? I have this same set-up with monitor and mini. I was using a Razer Core X eGPU with an ASUS AMD Vega 64 Card. But the best resolution I could get out of it was 3440x1440 over the DisplayPort port, and that didn't seem right (all the letters were slightly fuzzy). The Vega 64 seized up after a week so I returned both so I can get the BlackMagic eGPU Pro and connect via Thunderbolt whenever it becomes available (hopefully).

Correct me if I am wrong. Seems to me, FCPX not fully utilize eGPU in exporting video. How about color correction and color grading work? Is there any significant difference? I have a max out macbook pro mid 2012 with an old integratedGPU. I am still hesitant to upgrade to the newest macbook pro for video editing work. I think I would be better saving more money if I buy mac mini i5 + eGPU(rx580) instead and still keep my old macbook (+ipad pro) for mobile. @RockyColaFizz 5 жыл бұрын
@@Interceptor121 In my initial findings I noted the following. For a 3 minute 4K 60FPS file that I export out at 4k 30FPS in H.264. It takes 3 minutes 31 seconds to export without eGPU. With the Vega 64 eGPU it took 2 minutes and 46 Seconds. A time savings of about 45 seconds - or to scale it as a percentage it saved about 20%. So if you were doing a very large export it would make a small but noticeable difference. However when applying effects on a 10 minute 4k file the difference was huge. I added a stabilization effect and a crisp contrast to the file and the total time to render it without the eGPU was 55 minutes. With the eGPU it was 22 minutes. So that is certainly where the differences are clear.

Mac has become recently a bit too heavy on the price. The reason customer buys mac is the software. But now we are facing computers that are at least double in price comparing to the same thing in windows version. This again brings up the question isn't it better just to go back to windows and simply buy the software that you will need again and get a faster computer or keep paying a premium price . For me I don't play games so build in video card more than sufficient . I don't have the answer but I do hope Apple gets around and makes some price corrections because there sales are going down and I am planning to get a new laptop but I want to see more value for the money.

I've used an RX 580 eGPU with my 2016 15" MBP which is very similar to the 2017 one you test here, and when forcing eGPU use, it can do a BruceX export twice as fast compared to without the eGPU.

This is been my experience across all the MacBooks that I’ve used with the EGPU. With exports over 10 minutes, you normally will see about a 25% gain when exporting in my experience. But if i want to get an eGPU later, for 3d Graphic Work as i also do a lot of CAD, .. --->> you're saying that i might as well get the iMac..is that it ? Going for the Mini, i would probably get the : i7 3.2 6-core, 512Gb SSD model, 10Gb ethernet, 8Gb of RAM, and get 64G aftermarket.. installing it myself ( 360€, instead of 1200€ ) So that would be in total 2230€. (not factoring in a monitor, evidently) The i5 iMac (6-core) with the same approach is 2700+360= 3060€. albeit WITH the 27" 5k screen, but only 2 Tb3 ports, and WITH a Radeon Pro 580X 8Gb GPU, but only 1Gb ethernet The HP Z27 is a very solid 4K _ 32"_ display for ~500€. Unless one goes for an i9 CPU..that the Mini doesn't feature.. i reckon the Mini might still cut it. How much will a eGPU + enclosure be ? ~400€ ? (RX580 + Sonnet 350W) What do you reckon .. Nope. The MacBook Pro has a dedicated GPU which can run at full speed. Even though thunderbolt 3 is fast it only can push about 80% of the actual speed of the gpu. While I did not have many thermal issues with the Mac mini, the 2017 MacBook Pro doesn’t throttle or dip in speed hardly at all. My 2017 MacBook Pro also beat the 218 MacBook Pro for the same reason earlier this year. The tests are setup exactly the same. In fact if you connect an eGPU on one of the new 2018 MacBooks it will slow it down because it can’t handle the heat of having to process data from that eGPU as well. There are many others who found the same thing

Main advantage of the mini is as long as you get the i5 or i7 you can add stuff on that you want without paying loads at point of sale for less good components. 256GB SSD fine if you use thunderbolt 3 storage (for 90% of users). I've got an older iMac already that I could use in target display. TBH I've got my mini eGPU linked to a 24 inch Matte 75hrz freesync display that is currently £90 on Amazon. Not all mac mini users are video editors so this suits my text and gaming needs better for a lot less and more powerful then anything outside mac or iMac pro (that runs mac os officially).
