They are all awesome cars. T, S, GTS... we are lucky to own any of them. Porsche has this game nailed. They have a model for every personality type. Buy and enjoy the car that resonates with you. IMHO this car will be a collector, not a limited edition like the R, or GT3 touring, but still a collector.

I currently own a 2017 Carrera S with PDK, however, I have a 2019 Carrera T scheduled to arrive in September that I, with great anticipation, will be upgrading to! Yes "upgrading to!" Let me explain. The Carrera T I have on order will be my 4th 911. While I have always been a Porsche fan, I have no interest in "tracking" any of my cars. What I enjoy most is the pure and engaging driving experience that the 911 creates in an every day user fashion that few other cars can come close to. My first 911 was a 1984, 911 Carrera whale tail. Compared to todays 911's it was vastly underpowered, had few internal driver/passenger amenities, an overly awkward long throw 5 speed transmission, an air conditioner that horribly bogged the car down and a heating system that to this day I still don't think I fully understand. That said, it was one of the most engaging drivers experience cars that I've ever owned. In a word it was "FUN!" ( and yes I wish I still had that car today!) My next two 911's were a 2007 (automatic) and my current 2017 with PDK. Both great cars, and no question, the PDK transmission is nothing short of spectacular! However, both cars were severely lacking compared to my first 911 because the automatic transmissions, at least to me, had removed one of the biggest reasons to have a sports car like this. That being the "engaging drivers experience" that Porsche has always been known for. The weight difference for me is inconsequential. Personally I think Porsche made a mistake by trying to market that point. What this car is, is a return to a basic but well appointed German engineered drivers car for those of us who aren't stuck in traffic all day long while being a bit of an out-lier from the Porsches you see on the road from day-to-day. As I said in response to your first Carrera T (with PDK) review. Buying a 911 with a PDK is like having an aerobatic airplane with an autopilot that does everything for you. Where's the "FUN" in that? I've had the opportunity to demo a Carrera T and to me, for the way I intend to use the car, it is the first 911 since my '84 Carrera that brings back that feeling of a pure and engaging driving experience! Not to mention a huge smile on my face! Anyway, that is why I currently have a Carrera T on order and why in my mind I am looking forward to the "upgrade" and getting back to why I was attracted to Porsche 911's in the first place. Thanks for your review, I'm really looking forward to the upcoming drivers review. Ron

I've owned 4 911's in the past. After spending several days at the Porsche Sport Driving School, I came to the conclusion that the Cayman/Boxster is the better car. I sold a '13 C4S for a 2015 Cayman GTS/PDK, and then sold that for a 2015 Boxster GTS/manual. In NA/manual form the Boxster is the complete package. It may not have the cachet of the big brother, but that is of little consequence to me personally. IMHO the 2015-16 GTS/Spyder hit the sweet spot. The NA engine may well not be as fast as the new model, but I'm not out on the track setting records either. I have not been convinced that the new engine is an improvement except that it did improve the new 911T's

I don't agree with that analogy.. I find the PDK plenty entertaining, even if I don't have to use my left foot.. On the track it's the most intuitive piece of equipment I've ever seen,.. And, of course, driving around town in traffic, it's perfect.. After owning at least 17 manual transmission cars in my life.. The PDK has it all ..

The 911T is just the base 911 with the unlocked rear wheel steering option. Yes it does have a few changes in the drivetrain but these cars are perfect anyways base. Unless you are tracking the car, you are not going to notice differences. The current T to me will always be a gimmick.

Because it's not an engaging sports car. It's a car that is fast, comfortable, handles perfectly, and looks after you. It has enough engagement to make you in control, but it's no lotus. You can drive the 911 any day and all the time, but the lotus is a weekend toy.

Fortunate to own both a 991.1 GTS PDK (3.8 NA) and 991.2 T 7MT (3.0t). Both bought new: GTS = Dec 2015 , T = May 2017. I do a 1,000 mikes a month, spread over both cars. All road use, no track. They're very different to drive and both are great with ample performance. But the T is more fun. We're here to have fun! So I shall be selling the GTS soon as it's getting used less and less.

I have a Carrera T and have been enjoying it since the end of April. It is a FANTASTIC, FUN vehicle. It is my daily driver, and it just puts a smile on my face from the minute I start the engine and hear that growl from the Sports Exhaust. This is indeed a special vehicle. By doing a VIN analysis I found out that the number of T's made and sold in the US is far lower than even the GT3's, which will make it a very unique car. The interior is also quite spectacular, particularly if you choose the Carrera T interior, which adds deviated stitching, color matched door pulls and seatbelts, along with the stripes on the seat fabric. Add to that the Rear Axle Steering (unavailable on the base Carrara), the short shifter, Torque Vectoring and Limited Slip Dif. and Sports PASM (not available on the Base either) and you have an incredible handling vehicle. This is a great example of the whole being much more than the sum of its parts. It transforms the vehicle, and feels quite different from a base Carrera. By having the smaller turbos, you have nearly non-existent turbo lag, which can't be said of the S or the GTS. In a daily driver, you won't notice the HP difference from this to an S. Heck, I've had friends with GTS's that wonder why it is not more noticeable the HP difference between the two. I'm sure there are some undocumented software tweaks added by Porsche that changed the way this car feels. At the end of the day, in a few years there will be thousands of "S" models in the market, while only hundreds of T's at the most, making it a unique car, which will be sought after. Once again a great video, and I can't wait to hear your comments once you do the review of the Manual T! I'm a fan and now subscribed to your channel!

The reason why there’s going to be more S than T is because many know that the T is just a gimmick. I’m 100% sure that it handles just as good as a base model on the streets.

essel23fly Have you driven one? Clearly not. Base Carrera does not have SPASM, Rear Axle Steering, Torque Vectoring or Limited Slip Differential. Unless those things are useless in your opinion, So yes, there is a difference. A BIG difference.

@essel23fly 6 жыл бұрын
A C oh please you’re not going to notice that on street driving other than maybe rear wheel steering. Of course for the track it will make a “big” difference.... It’s a base model with a few unlocked GT options. Why would anyone get that for a base? You don’t need any of those to have a nice drive on a 911. You’ve been had by Porsche that’s all. I’ve only driven the base and a gt3 with rear steering.

@@security_threat I have done around 10 000kms with the Carrera T, I loved every bit of it, a sheer drivers car that can be used as a tourer, I could only fault the 7speed manual, of I were to re order it I would go pdk! I traded the vehicle in for a 718 GT4 thereafter a 992 GTS in pdk. The Carrera T is a definite keeper, out of all the cars it was the most fun! I’m a 991.2 4S owner, and I would say my car is too fast for the road already. If you are not planning to track your car with higher stock power, the T can be a better choice. The 4s puts down 420 hp too well that I cannot enjoy it on the road. However, if you have a T, you can push the car harder, and have more fun on the public road. And if you want more power, you can tune it up… I first worry about voiding my warranty, but now I don’t really care anymore.

Carrera S with a PDK, not driving a 911, but frequently rents them when in Germany and a well equipped S with PDK, any day of the week. Reason for not choosing a manual, I am usually always preferring a manual, but the PDK is such a fantastic gearbox, quick, smooth, and bloody comfortable when in traffic.

I drive a '13 C2S cabriolet (991.1) and have driven the T. While the turbos are powerful and fun, the torque coming in later, and feeling the power build as the engine winds out is such a rush as compared to the 991.2 with turbos everywhere. I'm going to delay as long as I can, buying a 911 with a turbo.

I know this is an old video, but to answer your question, I would definitely take the Carrera T over the S. The 991.2 base Carrera (and T) already have more than enough HP and torque; they are pretty fast cars. In my opinion perfect for a street car cuz you can push it and explore the limits on the street, unlike super high Hp cars. Add to that the extra bits that come on the T to sharpen the car up and the reduced sound insulation and you have a perfect drivers car, in my opinion. Edit: and not to mention that this is a special edition 911 that will always be a little more special than a Carrera S of the same vintage.

I like the Carrera T a lot. More than the non-special Carrera S. I would not miss the extra power as 370 is already plenty for a public road. And the standard engine has a more linear response anyway. I would skip the carbon ceramic brakes and add only the interior trim package (red stitching!). That said, at times I think a previous generation Cayman S (with the flat 6) is a more desirable car as it is plenty raw, surprising more rare and less expensive too. Right now though, I live in the gutter with my 996.2. Cheers!

I have a very low miles Carrera 991.1 and sticking with that because I prefer the sound of it’s naturally aspirated engine. The T is very nice though, if I had to choose between it and the Carrera S I think I would stump up the extra 3 grand for the S.

I like the trim package of the T, but the issue with it is the brakes. Unless you spec it with CF brakes, you are stuck with the base Carrera brakes. The S brakes are not an option. For that reason alone, I would go for the S with similar options. This is inexcusable on the part of Porsche. Perhaps they will wise up soon and correct this oversight. Or maybe they are just interested in selling more CF discs.

Good luck trying to fade even the base brakes - unless you are doing multiple laps at a fast track like Road Atlanta and your name is Walter Rohrl, I doubt you will notice the difference. I have a T on base brakes and they are better than any BMW M car I've ever owned. But hey, you might be a world class driver that notices this stuff, but most likely no...

@v12_dante26
@v12_dante26 5 жыл бұрын
yootoobhd for me the essence of the T was to keep it as simple as possible. No sunroof, no front suspension lift, no rear steering and a manual transmission. I wasn’t trying to keep the weight down but to keep the whole package as simple as possible. I’ve driven a few Carrera S with rear steer and could only feel a slight difference on very tight and twisty roads. It felt like I was driving a shorter wheelbase car. It did not feel unsettled or artificial. But the difference is way to small and subtle to justify the price and the complexity of the package. My salesman was kind of pushy once it was time to speck the car and wanted to convince me to add this option. His best argument was Mark Webber lapped the Nürburgring 1.5 seconds faster with the rear steer car compared to the non-rear steer car. If a pro racer save so little on a 8 minute lap, it wasn’t worth it. Once again, my goal was simplicity and purity. 5 months in and 10,000km later I would not change a thing.

I would definitely would go with a 911S for $3k more than the T. The torque is just so much more readily available on the 420hp set up of that engine. BTW - the sport seats with the manual front slide are amazing! So much easier, faster, and intuitive. I am part of the Porsche Passport program. It is a subscription service (I believe it is currently still only available in Atlanta). For a monthly fee you can get any Porsche as a daily driver - All the 911s up to the GTS - not the Turbo or any GT cars, and you get access to rest of the current Porsche vehicles - 718s, Panameras, Macans, Cayennes, etc.). They deliver them to your house and you can flip to another car as often as you like. In the last two months I have had a 911 GTS, 911 base, 911 s, Panamera 4s, and even a Cayman S. In fact, today they are flipping me into a Targa (either a 4S or 4GTS - not sure yet). So - while I have only been driving Porsche's on the regular for a couple of months I am lucky enough to get to drive many 991.2s in a short while. I would definitely would go with a 911S for $3k more than the T. The torque is just so much more readily available on the 420hp set up of that engine. BTW - the sport seats with the manual front slide are amazing! So much easier, faster, and intuitive.

Weight savings is actually 39.25 Kg/86.5 Lbs!! IF you get the carbon seats which also delete the rear seats in NA. Comparing the weight difference with a base Carrera is misleading, because the 20” wheels, LSD adds weight. If you compare apples to apples, you can save 86.5 Lbs, and even more if you remove the media unit.

Yea and if you live off of water and kale for 4 months, you can shave another 50 pounds of that too. I mean come on. The T is a gimmick. Rather have my PDK S any day. 911 is an excellent fast perfect handling GT car you can drive every day for years and not really a 'raw race car experience.' The T tries to make it a lotus fun car, but fails. Maybe if they actually stripped it out to allow real weight reduction it would be more than a packaged base car sales gimmick with some clever marketing. It's no different than how Porsche offers a GTS to clear inventory of parts prior to next generation release. The MT is crude at best especially when paired to a turbo (1-2 shift is nasty)...Miata 6 speed any day. I expect many of these Ts will be on the used car market in 2-3 years as owners move on to their next love.

This didn't age well. The small handful of T's on sale now are selling close to sticker, and manual T's are far rarer and arguably more desirable than any PDK S (which are a dime a dozen dentist spec cars).

Yet another Carrara T with the ceramic (Yellow) brake option because it’s embarrassing driving a BASE Porsche.

I actually chose the 991.2 base over the S. The prices are close enough where it wasn’t a money issue. It was just that the base engine felt more fun. It seemed to have more character. The S is very powerful but feels like a modern turbo engine with a lot of torque but doesn’t pull any harder up top.

Wishing I drove a 911 GT3 Touring....actually any 911 will even a 996. I like the T, but wonder if this is a cynical way to move more 911 base cars...who cares, this is more than enough car for the road and the only way to get the trick rear wheel steering in a base 911.

MDJAK Okay sorry. I was half right. I've heard some race teams prefer steel brakes to carbon ceramic. Since CC performs better and wears longer maybe it's just a cost issue. Thanks.

I wish Porsche would let you paint the calipers. If you want a red car with carbon ceramics, you are forced to have a McDonald's themed car.

I'd go for a GTS. What's an extra 18k if you're already paying over a 100k for a new Porsche ;)

11 lbs, really, makes the difference?

I don’t get this car. If your going to build a base engined car you need to have a much bigger weight savings. I would pay the 3000 extra for the Carrera S this car just does not make sense. I previously owed a991.1 turbo which was the best freaking car of ever owned.

Cool car but basically they took the basic put some options on it. Now what makes me really sad is the fact that u can not have the bigger better breaks from the S so u either stuck with the bad small breaks or pay so much for the ceramic breaks ! This is not cool. Finally i wished they have a specials rims for it not get the ones from the S

Another review that comments on the “lightweight” aspect of the great Carrera T. What credibility can a reviewer have when an alleged 11 lb weight difference “definitely had an impact on our driving...” As for an investment car, very very few automobiles actually constitute a good investment. If reducing your losses compared to other car purchases can be considered an investment then perhaps this title is not misleading.

Just get a Carrera S with a manual. You might have to pay more, but it will be worth more in the long run.

11 lbs? Are you kidding? If you are really serious about weight savings, lose 11 lbs, drive around, like my ex, only in a thong, or leave the spare at home. C'mon, PT Barnum has a quote for this, a sucker is born every minute. We are not talking 11 lbs in the suspension or tires, or even 11 off the overhang- -- Just 11 lbs total. That must be weight in extra money you are spending on this special edition.
