2018 Triumph Tiger 1200 XCa Review

Speaking of adventuring, on my way home from flogging this new Tiger all over the mountainside, I was inspired enough to explore a new route: Instead of taking the 210 to the 57 like I usually do, I hopped on 5 South, to the 10 West, to the 710 South! (I had to go to Long Beach to do a bike swap with Ryan.) Was it scary? A little. There are some parts of LA where you really don’t want to have to stop, but the Triumph Tiger 1200 XCa had me feeling all omnipotent. Bring it on!
Some of that pavement is not the best, but the bike’s WP semi-active suspenders barely noticed, and 1215cc of torquelicious Triple is just the thing for hacking one’s way through the urban jungle, both when the traffic is dense and when it opens up. The big Tiger was a very solid beast before, now it’s a highly refined, more civilized solid beast.

I own the new 800 XRX. It's inspiring to ride and I simply can't get enough of it. It's much lighter than the 1200 making it much more traffic friendly. It's also really quick in sport mode. The suspension is outstanding, it's makes cornering feel very secure. The triple engine sounds great and the electronics package gives more than I could even need. Even riding two up, it has more than enough power to tour on. Triumph build quality is outstanding and their dealers seem to be in a different league in terms of customer service. All in all it's the best all round bike I could find for the money.

Not sure why everybody is ripping on John. I thought that he did a great review, and really appreciate the fact that he was honest. It’s nice to see him pulling out a note sheet to make sure he has the facts straight. I love the few candid jokes as well. I would really love to see a versys 1000 and Tracer 900 review.

I think this bike looks beautiful and classy at the same time, love the Matt marine color, the best part of this video is that it is in American standard not European English. What sets this review apart from all the others is the Great video of the bike being ridden and being followed by the camera so we the consumer can see what it looks like being ridden. Great job.

Nice! Yeah, I really like this bike. I have a 2011 Tiger 800XC but want a bigger bike to handle two up camping a bit better. The 800xc can do it but you can tell its close to its limit in terms of the suspension, weight, power. The only thing about this bike that I don't like is that its top heavy, doesn't have the best range, and produces a lot of heat. BMW 1200gs is definitely a good competitor, I am just a little worried about those massive blocks just hanging out like that. I want to be able to lane split without working about loosing a cylinder.

I'm ready to step up from my tiger 800Xcx which I love, to a 1200. And even with all the new features on the tiger 1200. I would have to guess I'm going to choose a r1200gs. The BMW just seems to outclass the triumph at the same price.

I had one of the old ('14) Tiger 1200's and I hated it & consequently sold it. The handle bars were too far forward for an ADV bike, which was fixable with bar risers, but as I hated everything else, didn't get that far. Glad to see they moved them back, but 2cm I don't think makes any difference. The big problem to this is the weight, and worse it carries it high. This thing feels heavier than an electraglide (which is 200+ lbs heavier) because the COG is so damn high. Once it starts to go over, fuck you if you're trying to save it - especially if you're under 6'. Nice that they cut some lbs. The fueling also sucked, so it's nice to see that's better too. Only good thing about the previous one was the engine, and glad to see they left that alone.

Here Goes.. I love my 2012 tiger 1200 and finally decided to upgrade to new bike, a new Tiger 1200! My 2012 is an awesome machine, well maintained, never crashed and never dropped. Not a scratch on it and not even a scuff on the seat. I went to trade it in at SoCal Motor Sports in Brea Ca. And Spoke to Tom, he told me at 40000 plus miles it had to much wear and tear and they would not take my triumph as a trade in no matter what bike I wanted to buy. Lesson here, the builders and sellers of triumph motorcycles do not stand behind there overpriced products. Too bad, they lost a triumph enthusiast.

I hear you, unfortunately it's just the world we live in today, there are so many people, millions and millions of us that customer service just doesn't matter anymore like it did in the 1950's. Unfortunately you're always going to get that uneasy feeling of the used car salesman mentality, and that's just life today. Sale your bike yourself, buy the bike you like and don't let these salesman ruin your day, I know it's irritating as hell but it's everywhere and there's nothing you can do about it. Enjoy your ride and have fun.

did they ever fix the valve issues ?- for me the 1190R / 1290R fits me better, (6'4") my 1290 super adv R gets 43 mpg on highway and at 520 lbs with full fuel is right at 100 lbs lighter. I do like the xcx wheel rims better though, and its probably a better highway bike also.

No adventure bike needs a larger engine than 800 cc. Really the 1200 is a sport touring bike. Hardly anyone who owns one rides it off road anyway. Maybe the 800 cc riders go off road though.

@@jimbosavage Yes, I wish people would stop comparing the 800 to the 1200, these are two totally different classes of motorcycles. It would be like comparing a Honda Goldwing to a Triumph Tiger 800.

The Tiger 1200 has an identity crisis, should be fire road use only. Off roadability rating is a 3 out of 10 IMO. Just don’t trust or want to pick up the tank when it’s dropped. Just stick with 90/10 Adv touring and it’s probably a great bike. But for the price, get a one or two year old KTM, a second round town fun bike, and use the rest for your trip to Alaska. :)

Love all the negative comments, the only limitation of a bike like this is the rider. Even a Humvee would get stuck in a mud puddle if it had a super slab queen behind the wheel. I rode many street machines years ago off road with street tires before the “adventure bike” segment came about. People should really just get out an ride and learn some skills.

I wish they made the one with cast wheels like the Multi1200, 17" wheels front and back, it would make a perfect sport tourer. $21,750 . . . WTF . . . That's down right insulting. No thanks, I'll be heading to CL to buy something just as capable for much less.

Man this channel just can't compare motorcyclist or fortnine. Old man didn't say anything useful or nuanced. Just basically rambled a bunch of manufacturers data sheet and even admit he didn't ride the bike much. I mean most of the shots are of the bike stuck in the mud. Jeez Louise can't get much more lazier than this

i dont think fortnine is owned by revzilla. that was an april fools joke by fortnine. fortnine to the best of my knowledge is a small canadian retailer. i get what youre saying man. maybe im not motorcycle.com's target demo. but hey, we're all motorcycle enthusiasts, and i happen to really be interested in the tiger as a next bike. I wish the guys over at fortnine and motorcyclist magazine are doing reviews on this bike but they arent yet. the comment i made was just out of disappointment that the reviewer of this video didn't really go above and beyond for a review like we all come to expect out of channels like this this day and age. ari and zack at motorcyclist magazine make amazing entertaining content while being really informative, which this video lacks in both regards. the video is well shot and produced ill give you that but come'on, all the things he said in the video are not very inspired or nuanced. i watched the whole video and just left disappointed, where as if i saw a video of zack riding a bike to work i feel like a good friend who i know is really into motorcycles just told me all about what he likes and doesnt like about the bike.

Just sold my Tiger after 3 months.....probably the worst bike in my over 10 or 15 bikes over the years. Ran way too hot and is literally a ball-cooker. Gear box too clunky, engine crazy loud, and turns worst than a tractor. Windscreen useless and top heavy.....did I mention HEAVY?!? Engine tons of vibration to the bars. Traded in for BMW GS1200 Rallye and so much happier. Too many bike reviws have.....pure puffery.
