8 out of 10 for the front seats??? I guess you really cannot understand how good Volvo seats are unless you've had a severe back injury, like me. I've seen at least one reviewer of Volvo's new line-up try to explain this to people who are young, or who have not had a bad back injury. They just don't quite understand. Volvo built their front seats with the input of orthopedic surgeons, and they're a masterpiece.

I agree, I have had two recent Volvos (I rate them 10) and drove the XC90 with what I assume is the same seat design. 10/10 there too. My X5 with sport seats is a park bench in comparison. maybe a 6/10. And it costs 50% more!

And not to mention they are extremely narrow (hence the great leg room for rear passengers). A comparable 5 series BMW front seats are twice as thick as the ones in a V90, yet the Volvo seats are much more comfortable and offer the same high trim tech. This is really a class leading seat design in the V90.
@connorPiper0
@connorPiper0 6 жыл бұрын
There are actually three seat options on the V90. They have weird names but basically they have one that is hard and carved out for the R-Design, one that is more flat and sculpted for comfort on the Inscription with Nappa Leather and the standard seats, which use the same shape as the Inscription upgraded seats but have less padding and less forgiving leather. I think the cross country has the standard seats because they are a mix of comfort and sportiness (Offroad type driving would benefit from this). Alex rated 10/10 on other Volvo models with the more comfortable seat option.

Referring to the MY17 or '18 Merc E400 as "hideous compared to the Volvo" is a bit much don't ya think. .. All of these wagon's are a 4 box design to which there isn't an endless design path. .. The most recent Volvo designs that's exterior and interior are striking, I'll give ya that. .. The Volvo engine pallet consisting of a singular 4cly architecture begs further study. .. One 4cly version operates with two forced induction types which can be complicated, and more so considering the dealership service tech hierarchy. .. Recall the days when Porsche Design AG was Volvo's accomplice in engine creation and very much in the background. .. For that era, the inline straight 6cly as example fitted to 960 wagon, was a thing of beauty. .. Cheers, M/S out

From the picture shown I do not find the Merc' beautiful at all. The front just looks limp and the line from the lights to the rear window has a slight curve that doesn't work for me. That the grille stands proud of the lights looks wrong to me and the rest just looks like a generic wagon from the late 2000's. Though it should be noted that as a Scandinavian I am biased.

I'm in my early 30's and I absolutely LOVE VOLVO's. Always had, the 850's first and then the V70's that later followed. None of my friends or family like the brand or the models and I'm sure they represent the common american buyer. I've had sports cars (911, corvette, xkr etc) but I think the wagons are gorgeous and after i rented one I wouldn't mind driving it every day.

Let me say it again. People have no individuality when it comes to automobiles. They buy what everyone else is buying. Dare to be different and people try and tell you Volvo are overpriced but in the same breath they drop 35k on a RAV4 or CRV.

The American public is fickle about cars. Practicality often takes a back seat to "looking cool or powerful." This is the reason Americans are so hooked on trucks and SUV's. When I see a guy in an escalade or 3/4 ton pickup, I automatically think he's trying to compensate for a tiny or impotent penis.

Volvo has styled this car absolutely fantastic! minimalistic approach everywhere. Front, side profile. Even rear all feel soothing to look at. Otherwise many of will be busy all these aspects. Even interior is good without being hiiting on face. No led theme trim lights running through out interior which always looks to me a aftermarket thought . Glad Volvo doesn't have. Nice review. Only gripe people may say that tad underpowered or low engine specs. Volvo should offer more powerful or more cylinder version of their line up. Nice review. Very detailed.

I've watched a number of videos and I think we're going to buy one of these next weekend. I use an all terrain walker which requires a lot of cargo space. But, I'm also short so getting my walker in and out of an SUV is cumbersome because they are too high off the ground. We decided that a full size wagon was the best option for us but, sadly, there aren't many to choose from in the U.S. We purchased a Ford Flex two years ago because it was as close as we could find to what we really need without spending over 50K. After driving it for two years, we realize that it's not a great fit for me and it gets terrible gas mileage. I like that this Volvo has plenty of cargo space and a lower profile than an SUV, but it still has a sporty appearance. It doesn't look anything like the wagons that all the mother's drove when I was a kid. It's time to bite the bullet and purchase our first ever luxury automobile. This will be our biggest purchase other than our house! It has taken nearly a lifetime to realize that sometimes it's better to go ahead and spend the money on a better product that will last longer and retain it's value. You'll save money in the long run. I'm fully prepared to be bashed as unpatriotic, but I trust this vehicle more "because" it's foreign made. I've owned over a dozen cars in my life and, by far, the best quality I ever owned was a Honda. So, there you go.

I'm switching from a sedan (BMW 640ix GC) to a "crossover" because I want better visibility, higher ground clearance (so I don't keep scraping the front bumper or running into parking curbs), a more manageable length (for easier parking), and more carrying capacity. Volvo XC60 seems to fit all these criteria but the V90 CC does as well with the exception that rear seat legroom is minimal and, more importantly, it's a long car (from my perspective, since it's about as long as my current car); I wanted something about 185 inches. I realize that's not possible with a wagon, it becomes a tradeoff between having something that is less "upright" and has to some degree sedan handling and driving around what I consider to be a larger car. To show you how analytical I am, the fact you can get blackout window surrounds may be the deciding factor. :)

Plain and simple: People are not willing to give up the commanding position, more vertical space and better view of the road that CUVs offer all while having more less the same performance & mpg. We are not Europe or the rest of the world for that matter, TUFF luck for wagons on the land of the SUV and CUV(USA). Personally, i would love to own one, specially when my current ride it's not even worth $1500, I love being dirt broke ! Great work as usual, Mr. Alex ! P.S: They need to cut using the misleading badges, there's no more turbo 5 or 6 cyl engines anymore, only crappy and strung out to the Moon 4 cyl time bombs waiting to detonate as miles go by. And i hope they took care of their crappy transmissions giving up the fight at less than 50k miles.

TheArrogantOne Exactly, most ppl just don't understand how to appreciate cars inside out. Volvo active & passive safety quality, chassis design (especially for Cross Country), interior design and many more. V engine is a rare breed nowadays with the market demands, but still some Germans are still making em. But if 0-60 is the goal here, then after trying T6 4-cyl Volvos, sub 6 sec will just do more than enough on almost any cases.

What a timely wagon overview. .. The '90's era Volvo 960 wagon we'd order didn't age very well - this was our first Volvo experience. .. The Volvo Denver techs deserve an A+ addressing the many squeaks and rattles. .. The wagon proved not to have the level of refinement expected from an upscale Volvo. .. Our first and last Volvo. .. A performance Audi '95.5 UrS6 Avant soon replaced the squeaky 960 wagon. .. Okay fast forward a decade + and we're eyeing the 2 German made -US market available wagons; The Audi Allroad (A4) and the MY18 Merc E400 wagon. .. Agree with Herr Alex, get carried away with the option list of either at your own peril. .. A MB w/luxury body version, w/pkg 2 option, Acoustic option, Air Body suspension option, metallic grey exterior, rear seat heat and air bag options, with the No Cost MB Tex interior. .. This spec level positions a E400 wagon in the $78,000 MSRP area. .. As a spec. ordered sale and several MB dealer's price our spec'd wagon in the high $60,000's. .. Not an overly stupid price level for a wagon we'll own for well over 10 yrs plus. .. Our ole MY95.5 Audi S6 wagon (UrS6) with RS2 mod's was the uber ski wagon day in - day out over its 10-year daily driver duty. ..

Excellent detailed review and information. You know infinitely more about this car than the 3 different Volvo dealers I've talked to. The only content missing from the review is information on the proprietary hitch and towing capabilities of the V90 CC. Most likely because they aren't selling a lot of them so they haven't focused much energy on understanding the car and it's competition (or lack thereof). Volvo has clearly failed miserably in their go to market with this car - I am the perfect target market for this vehicle and am only now realizing (partially based on some of the info you present in your review) some of the differentiation relative to the market after researching it for about a year an talking to multiple Volvo dealers. Upon my initial review/research, this just looked like a vehicle with a 15-20% price premium to the competition (allroad, Q5, Q7) but there are some things that are more interesting. But there are also some trade-offs - such as the proprietary hitch, which forces the customer to chose between towing capability or hitch-mounted accessories (such as a bike rack).

With lot of European cars made in Europe imported into US, you're actually paying quite more for the car, making the price go beyond the class the car was meant for. In Europe, this Volvo isn't a $60k car putting it in a different class, with it different expectations.

Love how Volvos continue to make wagons meanwhile Americans continue to be smitten with pointless 3 row "MAM" (Minivan avoidance machines). Sad that US and by association Canada will be forced to take the LWB S90 after 2018; I just got out of a rental Altima and kind of shocked at how unnecessarily big the car was in the back seat. Just because I live in North America doesn't mean I'm a big American (I fit perfectly fine in an Audi A3 front & back) but disappointed by the lack of choices of small cars in this continent.

FActor in Volvo resale. Why is is bad? People want to buy prestige. A 8 year old BMW 5 series is still pretty cool to people. An 8 year old Lexus is both cool and reliable. An 8 year old Volvo is neither. You have to buy the right Volvo trim line at the right price, at the right time of year, to make it work out financially. I like them mostly for the excellent seats and the anonymity vs high profile brands, which in some areas of the country the locals hate. I got spit on in a BMW once, had another keyed, and my wife got tailgaed in her '98 540i sport by guys wanted to race her all the time. In some areas they're invisible too, but in the country watch out. Nobody hates volvos, which makes them a nice alternative.

Alex, I have noticed that you often mention tire width as a factor in handling performance, particularly braking. While tire width is an important metric in handling and braking, tire design and composition is often just as important (if not more so). A narrow high performance tire will out perform a wider all-season tire in most conditions, except cold-weather performance, which is directly related to tire compound and design, not width.

I am thankful for a station wagon. I do not like SUV styling or height and have zero need for a 3rd seat. While I enjoyed my XC70 this has a more car like ride and the styling is fine. I also like the lower roof line as it makes loading my kayak easier. The increased safety features were also a big draw.

Judging by the large number of luxury crossovers ($60,000 plus) I see being driven on a daily basis, perhaps you and Bruno may need to re-check your statistics. I realize many people in the U.S are not able to afford a vehicle at this price point. Many people in the U.S. however, are well able to afford a vehicle at this price point. Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Lexus, Infiniti don't seem to be having too much trouble selling their products in North America. Mercedes and BMW have built plants in the U.S. to help meet their demand and Volvo will be building a plant in South Carolina as well.

I'd say many more people can't afford them than can; and of course, by your reasoning - it apparently isn't possible to get a car from Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Lexus, Infiniti for less than ($60,000 plus).

(I don't see the V60 in any way replacing the v70 (they were both available simultaneously in Europe) - V60 was more a replacement for the v50. V90 replaced the V70 and V90CC replaced the XC70. ) These new v90 cars are so welcome in the marketplace, I hope North American buyers will go for them. The nice job Volvo has done on the new XC60 may slow the move over to the wagons though. But if I were able to have one now, it would be a V90 (with overseas delivery) - there's something to be said for not seeing yourself coming and going.

I’m in the UK and If I had to choose one I’d buy the Volvo V90. I love the shape and seats in the higher spec. I thought the new Mercedes CLS would be better but it looks the same as the other Mercs. In the UK I think the Volvo have an air of a more educated buyer gets them. My son loves his new shape 5 series and although it’s a nice big car. I wouldn’t have one.

Estate? Well that's an American word for it, it's called a Kombi in Swedish or as both Volvo and Saab has said before, Combi. Might be a harsher market in the US but you're welcome over here to the court try where every third car is a Volvo and make a judgement upon that. Do you want more people to recognize the V90 or the XC90 then drive it around and people will notice.

What? No comparison to the BMW 3 Series wagon? I know it's not quite the same, but it seems to make more sense than the 5 Series GT.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 6 жыл бұрын
The 3-series is considerably smaller and the direct competitor to the V60 wagon. If Volvo didn't have a V60 then maybe it would make sense to make that comparison but as it is a 3-Series to V90 makes no sense. They start about $10,000 apart, one is much larger, etc. The 90 series is a direct 5 series competitor so the 5GT in lieu of a 5-series wagon is really the only valid BMW comparison

I had a 2017 V60 R Design AWD T6 Platinum which I adored, traded it for a new V90 Cross Country T5 and after just two month I bought back my old V60 which thankfully had not yet sold! And all because of the center screen. Do not know it is a common problem, but mine was freaking crazy. It would work properly about 40% of the time. Cross traffic sensors would go off randomly, back up camera would not engage when needed, but do so after shifting to drive, phone calls dropped/connect/dropped/connect in cycle of death. Streaming audio through phone via bluetooth produced mediocre sound, but if i plugged the old iPod to the usb then it would sound properly. Screen would shut down while driving then reboot which was scary! I would love to give the car second chance ONLY after Volvo fixes the processor of that stupid screen. When that happens their new cars will then truly be perfect because their design is impeccable

Test drove exact same car 2 weeks ago in upstate NY and it was inscription PKG which they quoted as $64,500. I only test drove it because of the $50 they were handing out. These cars are practical but overly pricey. If they just cut a few corners, and lower the price, they would move volumes. I get the impression that they want to be the Porsche of the poor man. I absolutely love the video caption which sums up the Volvo brand - 'The best car nobody buy'. This is a luxury brand, yet the general population do not associate that term with the Volvo brand.

Toc Bikers because volvo ideals respect north europa ideals, be simple, minimal. And also in the first decade of 2000, volvo was in ford group, that ruin the brand making shitty cars like v50 or c30. Now they are very improved and they make very great luxury cars, now they use nappa leather, wood, alcantara, tje t8 has a crystal gearbox. As jeremy clarkson said " new volvo cars look like rolls royce". Peoplw should change their idea about this brand, it has nothing to do with the past

For those of that can afford the brand, we prefer that they don’t cut corners. That’s what wrong with most “American’’ cars... they forgo safety and quality to make throw away cars that Americans waste tons of money on. Most US cars are so cheaply made and overpriced it is ridiculous.

It really annoys me that people aren't buying these Volvo wagons like they used to. The current ones, especially the v60, are gorgeous and still good at carrying things, though the v90 is a bit compromised by the slope of its rear. The SUV craze is just ridiculous, in my opinion. If you need them, fine. But people are just getting them to ride high up and a wagon is a more efficient and better handling solution than an SUV. And an AWD wagon does just as good in the snow as an SUV.
