I will have a full review of the third-generation 2019 Acura RDX Advance in a few days (I’m held to embargo restraints). To tide you over, here’s a look at its new True Touchpad Interface with Acura Assistant Manager Andrew Quillin. This is the user interface that Acura will use going forward.

About Tom:
Tom Voelk is an award-winning automotive contributor to The New York Times. His podcast was the first to win an Emmy Award. He also married way out of his league. Now, stop reading this promotional copy bragging about Tom's photography and editing skills and watch a couple episodes. It's much more interesting.

All of our smartphones and Ipads are touchscreens. Why luxury carmakers think we wouldn't want that is beyond me.

Great video; thanks! I've had my RDX for few days now and have everything down pat except how to name favorites such as "Tom's House" as I see you did in the video. How do you do that? Thanks!

I like the screen. It'll be interesting to see how the absolute positioning works. What If you want to find something in the middle. Can you just swipe around?

Wouldn't it be common sense to have the touchpad same shape as in rectangular as the screen?
@NeutralGenericUser
@NeutralGenericUser 6 жыл бұрын
It is the exact same aspect ratio. The right side of the screen is not selectable, it only shows you information, and you can switch to it via the slider looking thing to the right of the touchpad. I was unsure about this at first as well, but the aspect ratio of the touchscreen's selectable area and the touchpad are the same. Pretty clever solution, IMO.

Seems like a neat solution. I'm just glad that they stuck with "infotainment" for this and put climate controls where they belong: as hard buttons

These are the same designers that got rid of the volume knob. This is just as dumb. Fire everyone of them!

Fire all of them! Except the designer that included a manual volume knob and seek/skip buttons below the screen and to the left of the hazard warning button. I drove one briefly and the True Touch works much better than the laptop like touch pad/cursor in the Lexus NX

I own a 2016 Mazda CX-5 and find the infotainment controls to be difficult to use without looking away from the road, and too many "clicks & turns" of the controls to perform simple functions like changing radio station, treble\bass, media, from one function to another, etc. If a car company would make all of the infotainment functions via hard buttons and knobs - no menu driven, no funky true touch pad, no rotary dials, etc., I'd likely buy the vehicle. I'll need to try out this new Acura set up and see if its better...
@ColeTowsley

I'm surprised. My girlfriend and I _love_ the Mazda command knob input for the infotainment screen in the Gen3 Mazda3. For us it's been the most intuitive input we've ever used, we don't even utilize the touch screen. We're shopping for something larger now, and are leaning heavily toward the CX-9 to maintain this sort of comfortable input.

The second the review is embargoed, everyone will be trashing this system, and in the coming years. No Android Auto as well. You have to make an infotainment system dummy-proof for auto journalists.

The 2018 NSX, TLX, and MDX have both. The RDX is scheduled to get it 'likely this year' via a software update. Apparently AA is incompatible with the 'absolute positioning' part of the touchpad and requires some rework to make it compatible.

I feel like they could get more customers if it was also a touchscreen. I personally enjoy the touchscreen because that is what I am used to inside and outside of the car. On the plus side, less fingerprints on the screen, I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

Exactly, give consumers more choices. I don't see why it's so hard. Genesis and now BMW are offering both touchscreen and wheel knob control.

Touchscreen are old system that very few people care to learn or use. This is the revolutionary touchpad system that is totally brand new and takes only a few months to learn while the old system took years to master with a touchscreen.

Many buyers don't know how to use a touchscreen! Many buyers don't own a smartphone! It going be too much of a shock factor that is why all the luxury car company continue with a separate touchpad or knob to use as a pointer device to navigate the screen and prevent the screen itself from working directly! Seems to be working as buyers seem to get familiar with their laptops touchpads.

In a traditional button/lever/knob world you do not need to look at the controls to operate them, neither you do not need to look at a screen because there is no screen: you make music louder or quieter, or you make air colder or warmer or you make fan blow more or less. Even when you change audio settings you know that you need to press the Settings button so many times to get to balance setting or so many times to get to fade setting. This new Acura system requires eyes off the road and on the screen whatever they say about safety. Also, I cannot see how the absolute touch points allow selecting items that are not in the corners with precision unless there are fixed number of items on the screen (say, eight, with four in two rows) and the pad has "pimples" or whatever other Braille-like thingies. In any case, I would like to see the same presentation while the car is in motion, either 70 mph on a freeway or 40 mph on some beaten up back road - you can hold onto a knob, but cannot hold onto a touch panel. All this stuff works only when the car is stationary. My car has a screen and a touch system, luckily I can use many features with a knob and button. Did I mention that I hate the tablet in my field of vision? Especially the one that does not hide inside the dash. The Germans started this idiotic trend.

Basically Honda/Acura is not capable of vehicle manufacturing, it’s a company for lawn mowers or motorcycles at best. The company is always bragging about interior/exterior of the vehicles, has anyone seen them bragging about engine or transmission? See how many problems they had in the past, acurazine.com/forums/3g-rdx-problems-fixes-458/harsh-shifting-2nd-3rd-971060/ acurazine.com/forums/third-generation-rdx-2019-454/how-many-immediate-problems-2019-rdx-too-many-972050/ I’m just waiting my RDX 2019 to be recalled for transmission replacement, but what can they replace it with? This transmission issue is not only for RDX, it’s common to all Honda/Acura: www.autoblog.com/2019/04/25/honda-odyssey-minivan-recall-transmission/

So they've located the screen such that it minimizes the amount of time your eyes are off the road, but the user interface has a palm rest needed for the copious amount of time your right hand has to be off the wheel to use it? This guy can spin it however he likes but it seems a bad design to me. Get rid of the pad and put thumb roller balls on the steering wheel so the driver at least keeps their hands on the wheel while navigating the screen
@RixceU

RigoTheFilipino Your hand is only off the wheel for ~1.5 seconds when changing gears in a manual and your eyes stay on the road. Doing anything with that touchpad will take APPRECIABLY longer and require you to take your eyes off the road as well.
@doc0garcia
@doc0garcia 6 жыл бұрын
idk about you but the people here in the east coast area I see a lot of driving with one hand on the steering wheel unless it's in bad weather........plus this design is way better than looking at your phone. the location of the screen is at eye level compared to looking completely away from the road when you take a glance at your phone. One thing I liked that that guy said was that the corners of the pad are set allowing quick response and muscle memeory over time. Than gives you hard buttons for back and home. All this creates a great UX especially when driving.
