After we filmed this review, GM killed off their first plug-in hybrid model. After a great deal of debate we decided to just go ahead and publish this review as a memorial to the only PHEV with a truly split-down-the-middle personality.

We are "senior citizens," and have two 2013 Volts. We bought 'em off-lease, and for less than half retail. Both are still running strong with no appreciable battery degradation. GM engineered the crap out of this car. They knew they had to get it right, as it was the introduction to their "electric age" era of personal transportation. I, as a retired electrical engineer, hacked the charge controllers to 240 volts and we are totally satisfied with them. I'm thinking of trading mine in for a used 2019. Too bad they shit-canned them. It's still the ideal cheap electric car. Our driving pattern seldom requires any fossil-fuel purchases.

It's moot at this point, since the Volt is gone, but all the discussion about efficiency misses the mark. For most people, they'll probably be able to drive the Volt almost exclusively electric. That can't be said of the other plug-in hybrids with the much shorter electric-only ranges. Consequently, even though they're technically more efficient in each mode, they'll generally be burning a lot more gasoline for a similar number of day-to-day miles. This varies with the commute, obviously, but the Volt has been a fantastic car for me, because it's essentially an electric car that happens to have a gas engine for road trips.

It's really going to come down to ones own driving habits. I just bought a used Volt, but I wasn't really comparing it to another used hybrid but to the Chevy Cruze. I've had and loved a Cruze for many years, so when it came time to replace my wife's car a newer Cruze was the first thing I looked at at. The Volt though is a very similar size, similar interior, etc but has that 30-50 miles of all-EV range with a similar gas-only efficiency as the Cruze and a good deal of additional technology features available. With our relatively low daily driving needs, it seemed like a perfect choice. Sure we might have been able to find something with a higher fuel efficiency, but being able to avoid gas entirely for most trips is even better for us.

I have a 2015 Volt. Love it. Getting 88 MPG lifetime, and if not on a road trip, I don’t buy more than a gallon a month. I get why they 86’ed her. It’s only real purpose was to lower the fleet MPG so they can sell more trucks, and SUV’s. The upcoming all electric fleet will do that without having to build a 3rd propulsion system that the Volt used.

Is the volt a good buy used? I have found a ton of 2017 LT models for around 17k with about 20-30k miles on them. It’s either that or a Prius priced around 17-20k max used. Which is best ?? I commute to work about 80mi each way daily and need the best bang for the buck.
@alaind831
@alaind831 5 жыл бұрын
@@toddnewman2680 160mi a day commute (that's >50k a year!) will likely favor the Prius much better gas mileage (52 vs 37 which require premium on Volt), unless maybe you can re-charge for free and very low gas prices. You would have to run numbers... the prius are $$ used even though retail for much less, which hurts right now but will help when it comes to resale down the line. You see prius with ridiculous mileages still sell for a lot vs other cars. If you plan to put many 100k of miles that may be best options. The volt drives a lot better though (which I almost bought, but ended with prius for kid first car). You need to look at maintenance cost too. Ultimately long term an all electric car with the range you need might be the cheapest options for you as kw can be 1/3 the cost of gas, and many work places offer free charging. Maintenance cost are a lot lower than hybrid which have a full engine (just did a bunch of work on my prius) + battery/electronics. Might want to check total ownership of a Tesla 3/leaf/etc.. with EV rebates in your area.

I’m usually a big fan of the accuracy and detail of your reviews, but it’s kind of unfair to ding the inclusion of an MPG only meter as misleading when if you just click on that box in the infotainment console, it will switch to report MPGe combined, which accounts for both electric and gas miles driven over the total amount of energy used (and is likely what the Pacifica you mentioned was reporting)
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 5 жыл бұрын
MPGe isn't any better since they are still displaying a combined rating on both energy sources. The optimum would be miles/kWh when in EV and MPG when in hybrid mode.
@mattjones3257
@mattjones3257 5 жыл бұрын
@@AAutoBuyersGuide The energy display also displays your MPGe specifically for EV only operation, and lists the kWh consumed and miles driven if you prefer that metric. It also presents your MPG for gas operation only on the right of the energy screen since your last charge. I agree that having lifetime figures for each of these sources individually would be nice, but the Volt already presents what some consider to be an overwhelming amount of information both in the "gauge cluster" display and in the infotainment energy screen. In any case, all I'm saying is that the Volt does offer a measure of combined efficiency rating, which is what you said you preferred in the Pacifica.

I give GM credit for developing and releasing this innovative car even as their company imploded through 2007-8. But I also think it was a missed opportunity. They were the first with the serial hybrid design. Yet they botched the early marketing by trumpeting their "pure EV with a backup plan" yet not clearly explaining or disclosing that the Volt runs as a parallel hybrid in some driving situations. The battery in the spine was innovative in the face of a ton of "compliance cars" that just shoved a battery into the trunk, yet that design is a huge compromise compared to the battery under the floor layout. GM gets so much right, but can't seem to avoid the crippling mistakes that scream "accounting rejected the better ideas". They cleaned up their balance sheet, but I see no evidence they improved (or removed) the idiotic management that prevents the clearly strong engineering team from really (re)building a strong company.

No matter what GM does, they are still going to be saddled with their UAW contract. They would be better off liquidating the company and returning capital to stockholders. They can't compete in the long run. Both the union and management are intent on looting the company until it collapses.

I don't know of any long range plug in hybrids that have a pure below-the floor battery design such as that used in the Bolt, Tesla, and other pure BEVs. The Ioniq, Prime, Niro, upcoming Escape PHEV and others are all roughly half the size of the Volt's battery, have underpowered electric motors, and put the battery beneath the floor/in the trunk. The Prime actually puts in in the trunk and sacrifices a seat. The Clarity comes the closest, with some of the battery beneath the floor and most beneath the trunk and back seat, but it can do that because it's over a foot longer than the Volt and has room to spare without a noticeably smaller cargo area. In a compact platform like the Volt, they needed room for other drivetrain components. Not saying you're wrong to criticize the Volt for this, but if you want a long range, compact electric vehicle that also runs on gas, you need to compromise somewhere.

I own a 2013 Volt and my daughter bought a Clarity PHEV last year. With a 38 mile daily commute, I average maybe 20 gallons of gasoline a year to cover road trips and heat when the temperature drops into the 20's F and below. Barring a road trip, I use less than a gallon of gas from April thru November. The longer range of the newer Volt would cut out a few gallons per year for me, but certainly not worth replacing my current one. We briefly considered an Ioniq PHEV for my daughter but with no electric heat it made no sense in Michigan.

We have bought an Opel Ampera (Volt spelled European accent) showing 0.4 l / 100 km (588 MPG) lifetime value, it was 6 years old, ran 62000 miles. It means that the combustion engine was running below 10% of time (distance!), so it's almost new (calculating with 6 l / 100 km = 39 MPG). You should not buy a new one for long years, I think.

I don't intend to keep it for more than a few years before I buy a full ev, but as a stop gap car it's alright. I hate how much gas I use in it (winter has reduced range from 80km to 45km), but it's low enough that I'm doing better than if I'd got a Prius. And for me it isn't about the cost of gas/electricity, it's just about not burning gas. Bought my used 2018 Volt Premiere a year ago for about $25,000 CDN. At the time that felt a little steep, but now (a year later) 2018 Volts are going for about $10,000 more than I paid! I've seen the base model pushing $40,000 CDN! I've put on a lot of mileage, but even despite that and an extra year of age, it's still appreciated considerably. I realize this phenomenon is not exclusive to electrified vehicles, but I'm sure glad I sucked it up and bought it at what I thought was already an inflated price a year ago rather than waiting until now and having to pay the currently exorbitant gas prices on a weekly basis. I've considered selling my suddenly hugely in demand Volt at a profit and then turning around and buying a brand new Bolt EV, Bolt EUV, or Kona EV, but who knows how long I would have to wait for one of those. Plus, I live where charging is scarce. Thanks to its powertrain flexibility, the Volt is a road trip monster. The same cannot be said of either of the "Bolt Brothers" nor the Kona EV since neither one of them boast particularly fast DC charging capabilities compared to newer EVs like the Ioniq 5 or EV6; so, while it's manageable if you're very mindful about where our few chargers are located, it could be stressful and complicated going into remote areas like the Rocky mountains. Bottom line, the Volt is the best compromise between EV and ICE currently on the market and we need more vehicles like it to ease the transition from fossil fuels to electric. This would allow the shortage of battery materials to go much further and most people would still rarely use gas. I think GM needs to introduce a Volt EUV crossover.

The first gen had led tail lights, which is better, but no amber indicators and single central reverse light, which is worse. Still, it's a simple upgrade to put led bulbs in the tails and then just never worry about it again.

My son bought a Tesla model 3 performance and I took over the last six months of his 2017 Volt LT lease as a third car because I wanted to try out a PHEV. I really enjoyed the time I had with it. Ultimately, I found it too small and uncomfortable and kept hitting my head on the roof getting out. However, I thought the Volt powertrain was nothing short of brilliant. After I returned it I was hooked on a EV/PHEV and wanted one. I ended up buying a 2019 Honda Clarity PHEV. I love the car! Especially, having gotten it for 18K, down from sticker price of 37.5 (Touring) after tax credits, discounts and incentives. I will say though, I like the Volt's powertrain and delivery better (staying in full EV until depleted) and I like how the Volt handles the power delivery after the battery is depleted. And I would give a slight edge to the Volt's handling. I just had a problem with the Volt's size. I would highly recommend the Volt as a great used car deal. Oh, one thing Alex didn't mention was that for 2019 all the graphics on the dash and infotainment on the Volt were upgraded and tweaked.

I have a 2017 Volt and I love it but you do point out a couple of downsides, especially rear seat space. Fortunately I only have a wife and 2 kids. I have driven a lot of small SUVs and crossovers so maybe this is normal for a hatchback or sedan but one quirk i find with the Volt is that the front seats go back really far. I notice this when drive both of my kids to school every morning. First I drive my 6'1" 17 year old and he puts the seat all the way back and can easily fit his backpack which contains a ton of books and a full sized laptop in front of him. Then later I drive my 12 year old and when he gets in, the seat is so far back that he cannot see over the dash. I am 6' and 280 lbs and I only need to put the seat about half way back to drive comfortably.

Great Video. Very informative. Also note - cost of gasoline for example for lets say two charges 1 to get to destination 53 miles = approximately $0.40 approximate 2 to get back home 53 miles = $0.40 approximate. Cost for gasoline = 1 - 53 miles = 1gal = $4.00 to destinatiom 2 - 53 miles = 1 gal = $4.00 to home Total gasoline drive cost = $8.00 approximate miles and cost per trip both scenarios. With that said the total cost savings to drive a Chevy Volt in electric mode with a full charge per day will be approximate the $6.20 per day. Not to mention the added benefit of not having to stop at a gas station Couple times a week to fuel up. Massive time saver. Maintenance costs are reduced dramatically as well compared to in all gasoline vehicle. According to the specifications from Chevy they suggest changing the oil approximately 2 and a 1/2 years Massively huge incredible technology with the Chevy Volt. Wish they would have kept it around.

@mattjones3257
@mattjones3257 5 жыл бұрын
While it's darn near impossible to figure out exactly where the cost equivalency comes in, your statement isn't any more accurate than Alex's. Generally, the Prime will be about 25% cheaper to operate if your daily commute is 25 miles or less. Between 25 and 75 miles, the Volt will probably be cheaper to operate, unless you live in high electric cost areas like Massachussetts (21 cents or more per kWh) Hawaii (I think around 30 cents last time I checked). In those states, the Volt is actually cheaper to operate on gas than electric at current low gas prices. I own a Volt, and I love it. But my daily commute is 28 miles and it'd probably be slightly cheaper in a Prime. I don't regret the Volt as I FAR prefer its looks, and it's a much more engaging and comfortable car to drive.

@corystansbury
@corystansbury 5 жыл бұрын
@@phillips9986 Edit: I revisited my more pessimistic take before to acknowledge reality: Up until recently, only California fell into this category, due to the ridiculous electrical rates in California. I just ran the numbers, factoring in all the stuff for multiple driving distances. I have to admit that, given today's cheap gas prices (nearly everywhere), the PRIME wins the notable majority of driven distances in the vast majority of states. If gas goes back to where it was up until 2016 or so, I believe that generally reverses. Now, when you factor in the smaller real-world cargo volume, vastly slower acceleration, poorer handling, noisier cabin, and HORRIBLE styling...I'm still happy to own a Volt (plus, much of our juice comes from my wife's employer, so the big battery wins for us). The EV driving experience is also a notable benefit. I generally think I have to agree with Alex's overall assessment. I could never get over the Clarity's styling, but beyond that, it's a great car. Lesser known is that GM had a LOT to do with that entire system. My cousin used to run the Transmission calibration group at Honda and said the Volt was near to perfect...no reason to reinvent the wheel. I believe an optimized plug-in is still a great solution for overall efficiency...arguably better than full EVs. I think the Volt likely isn't the peak of that (they chose to be mostly electric because that is very appealing). The Prius/Ioniq etc. do very well at reducing the system costs (by using the engine at high loads), increasing gas MPG, and lowering battery purchased while still covering a useful number of miles for every day use. When looking at the overall energy consumed, they are very comparable to the Volt (I've run those numbers too). Looking at the larger footprint, including manufacturing, they beat pure EVs to probably something like 200k miles. Buying 70-100 kWh of battery to use occasionally is a HUGE amount of energy (and mass to carry around). It looks like everyone is going to full EV with quick charging, but I think passing over PHEVs is chasing a religious philosophy, rather than the actual engineering optimum.

Love my Vaxhall Ampera (Volt Gen1), it only cost me £40 last month for petrol, in comparison my previous BMW 3 series cost £320 for a months driving. Can't help thinking with the latest batteries or super-capacitors my Ampera could get 3 times the range it has now. And this in my opinion is where GM and most EV/hybrid manufacturers have gone wrong, with their sales model. They should have been designing and selling cars which could be easily upgraded, since technology is rapidly advancing, hence future proofing them and shielding them from high depreciation rates. Most people can't afford to take the hit in the loss in value of these cars hence are avoiding them, which I believe is why the Volt has failed.
