@@rimonzaky5578 are you referring to the fact that the engine kicks in and sounds louder than running on electric? Yes. It's weird going from all electric to an engine run on gas. You are driving effortlessly quietly, then it switches and sounds like a monster being woken up under hood. Everything about this care takes getting used to. From the dash board display, plugging in every night, to forgetting to check to see if you have enough gas. 😄

Get the non-hybrid S trim though, its a superior vehicle. Handles better, payload is greater, seats fold away (the best feature), looks great, and it has great tow capacity. Lower initial price, better used value retention, and lower long-term maintenance costs with just one rather than two powertrains.

@@BoopSnoot The Hybrid qualifies for $7,500 federal credit though, making it basically same price as the non-hybrid. If you aren't needing towing or the stow-away seats (instead you get much more comfortable 2nd row seats in the hybrid, plus the 2nd row seats can still be removed very easily), the hybrid is better in a lot of ways. Whisper quiet, far superior gas range/mileage (I'm at 800 miles so far on this tank and only used 1/4 tank, still have 3/4 left). It's saving me about $125/month in gas (even considering the cost of electricity).

@@slandshark I don't think its healthy to exhaust the non-hybrids range before stopping for gas, as that's how you end up with blood clots and bladder issues. The non-hybrid does over 400 miles, which is about 6 hours of driving on the highway, plenty long IMO. That's more fuel savings than expected, and at least the battery has a good warranty because it will be expensive to replace and they tend not to last very long in extremely hot and cold climates (I'm in extremely hot in Houston where the black asphalt w/ triple digit temps tends to roast floor mounted batteries). In any case, fuel economy aside, the non-hybrid is the more utilitarian sporty version.

@@BoopSnoot I suppose we can agree to disagree then. Also, the hybrid battery in the Pacifica is actively cooled (unlike the batteries in the volt and VW e-golf, for example), drastically improving battery life. I also disagree on the 'sporty' version, since the hybrid has instant torque unlike the gas version. Even if you never charge the hybrid battery you still get over 30mpg average compared to low 20's for the non-hybrid. I own the 2018 limited Pacifica hybrid and would buy it again in a heartbeat.

@@slandshark Sporty with regard to higher peak horsepower and the S version having wider lower profile tires and 657lbs less weight. More power, less weight, wider tires, more payload, stow and go, and 3.6K lbs tow capacity makes it the more sporty utilitarian option. The hybrid is the fuel saving option, but with compromises.

Duke Silver PacHy degradation isn’t covered if it’s normal wear and tear. My Volt’s battery has degraded by about 5% after 6 years. No need to replace it.

@@MrDragonsPit76 I was able to purchase a LIFETIME Mopar warranty for about $3000 (no limit on miles or years from manufacture date). Mopar discontinued offering this Nov 2018. While I've had no problems with my 2017 Pacifica Limited, I'm not sure I would have purchased it without this guarantee.

@Jags No, they don't. I have had 3 Dodge Grand Caravans, put way more mileage than that on all 3. Current one 200k km, and nothing has been done other than oil changes. The Pacifica hybrid should be even more reliable since the engine is running far less.

Hello Mike, I live in Toronto, I calculate in liters and kilometers. What is full gas capacity, how many kilometers do you get for full tank, using gas and battery. Just battery how many kilometers would you get

Jack Ryder hey, I’m in Ottawa! I don’t know the exact numbers off the top of my head but a full tank is something around 50L or about $60. The electric range we get is about 50km depending on how you drive (we’ve gotten as much as 60km on city streets, less on highway). The gas range is the normal 500+km or whatever. The plugin hybrid is just as capable as the gas version but since most trips are less than 50km in a given day you end up buying way less gas. We buy gas every few months instead of every week or so. I haven’t bought gas for our van since June!

@@whyprasad Yea - I was shopping like a mad-man for aggressive deals on 2018's and ran across a new Pearl White Limited w/o Sunroof here in Phoenix at Tempe Chrysler/Dodge (they were awesome) - drove our 2017 Gas White Limited down there and gave it to them + $20k and drove off with the Hybrid. I paid $36,500 for the gas one new 2 years prior (negotiated for months) so I feel OK about the deal. Wasn't amazing, but was the best deal I could find nationally for trade-in and was in our back yard and took all of an hour and a half I think. We LOOOVVVEEE the Hybrid. Wife is crazy happy with it and we use the UConnect Theater a lot with kids (put on learning shows or PBS or some Disney movie - a bit better than glaring down at iPads for hours maybe? Who knows)

The Pacifica Stow-and-Go seats are better than the Caravan ones, but not as good as the regular seats like in the hybrid.

Its surprising that Toyota hasnt done it yet with the Sienna. Theyre far ahead in hybridizing the other segments. Smart of Chrysler to take this segment while its wide open.

They are no doubt waiting for the next model, which is a couple years overdue at this point.

The Pacifica S non-hybrid is the car that does everything. The hybrid has worse handling, worse payload, lose stow and go, and can't tow.

I sure hope you were given a free replacement hybrid Pacifica while yours was in the shop. The Pacifica (hybrid or not) seems like a great design until I read these horror stories.

I own a 2018. The lane keep assist is “ping-pong” style.

Our 2018 it just bounces around. It tends to argue with me about the center of the lane too. Not sure if I'm right or the van is. The adaptive cruise on the other hand is awesome, smooth as silk.

It all depends on the manufacturer and how many EVs they have sold. You probably heard that about Tesla or maybe Chevy.

The Outlander is a 5 seater SUV I think? Totally different vehicles and the outlander has much smaller EV range.

Engine starts and charges battery then shuts off you should be able to run it all night without engine starting

Engine will turn on often to recharge engine depending how cold outside. If you're in below freezing engine will run quite a bit since heater uses a lot of energy and poor insulation in vehicles especially with all the windows.

If you are camping and have the car plugged in at the site, you can run the climate control continuously without using the engine.

Since the hybrid seats don't stow into the floor, I imagine they avoided heating them so they would be easily removable for those who want greater cargo area.

They are totally different things. Pacifica has no belt but only planetary gears.

Other than anecdotes what's the evidence for your opinion? I'm not saying that FCA vehicles rank as high in reliability as other brands but the actual differences among brands has been shrinking for years and is no longer a significant metric among most brands. Furthermore, while one brand as a whole may rank lower than another, that tells you almost nothing about the relative reliability of specific models. Reliable information about the latter is extremely difficult or even impossible to find.

Stephen Hendricks DJ GaFFLe posted his Pacifica ownership issues in the comments. I realize it’s anecdotal but I’ve seen similar reports online as well. Chryslers are known to have many issues. Toyotas don’t have as many. I’m not saying they’re perfect, but problems tend to be fewer and further between. Toyota problems also tend to be easier and cheaper to fix

But here are some points to consider. () Sources of evidence. Undoubtedly the best and most comprehensive publicly available source of information about reliability is Consumer Reports annual survey of over 500,000 owners of vehicles. But CR warns readers that a BRAND's reliability scores may not accurately reflect the reliability of individual models. And for the least popular models, scores may well be based on very few responses. The FCA brand ranks relatively low compared to some other brands in terms of reliability but that doesn't mean that each and every vehicle in the FCA line-up contributes equally to the overall reliability score. A statistician will tell you that if there is more variation WITHIN a brand's set of vehicles than BETWEEN brands, a brand's ranking should not be relied upon to tell you much, if anything, about one vehicle versus another. () Measuring Actual Risk vs Rankings. When you purchase a vehicle you should be interested in the actual RISK of encountering a major reliability issue, not whether one brand (or vehicle) is slightly more or less reliable than another. Hypothetically, if one brand has 30 cases of problems out of 1000 vehicles sold and another has 15 cases, the first brand is arguably twice as reliable as the second. But the chance of encountering ANY problem in the first brand is still 3 out of 100. And in reality the actual risks of one brand/vehicle vs another is much closer than that hypothetical example. This is a problem analogous to comparing violent crime rates. One city, say Houston, has a much higher rate of violent crime than another such as New York City. But the actual risk of being mugged or murdered in Houston is still very, very low. (And yes, it's true that Houston is a more dangerous city than NYC according to FBI crime stats.) () What is measured by "reliability." CR asks respondents about 17 separate categories of issues in their evaluation of vehicles' reliability. They range from truly serious categories such as major engine and major transmission problems to things like "paint/trim" and "in-car electronics." In 2018 the Chrysler Pacific was at the top of five categories in 15 of the 17 categories, at the next lower category in one, and at the bottom in one category (in-car electronics.) The Honda Odyssey also ranked at the top in 15 categories, one in the middle, and one (again in-car electronics) in the lowest category. The Toyota Sienna was at the top in 16 categories, and at the next lower rank in one. No question that the Sienna outpointed both the Pacifica and the Odyssey according to CR's survey, but only in a single category, one that hardly qualifies as something serious such as "major engine" or "major transmission" issues. And for that matter, there is no way to determine just how much more frequent or more serious the "in-car electronic" problems were in the Pacifica and the Odyssey than in the Sienna. Would that single issue be enough to determine a purchase? Not for me. () Vehicle age and personal experience. As vehicles age they, like men, tend to drop off in performance and reliability. What does it tell you about the reliability of a new model to look at the current reliability of a model with the same name five or more years ago? Likely very little, especially if the vehicle has undergone a refresh or been replaced with a new generation since that time. When manufacturers encounter issues, even when they don't issue recalls, they typically redesign components in the next refresh or generation of a model. And virtually all vehicles today can be counted upon to run without issues for at least three years. That's why virtually every manufacturer offers a 3 year bumper-to-bumper warranty. It's a cost-free marketing tool. Some manufacturers who have reputations based on models from years before that encountered problems may well offer longer warranties. Again, because like any fixed term insurance policy an issuer expects that on average they won't have to pay off. Furthermore, past experience is a terrible guide to current risk. I owned an early Mazda6 whose engine literally melted at 8000 miles. It was replaced under warranty and ran flawlessly for another 120,000 miles. Would I hesitate to buy another Mazda? No. Every manufacturer produces a lemon now and then. Encountering one is largely a matter of the luck of the draw and having an engine detonate is about as likely as being struck by lightning. () Bottom Line. The internet is packed with hysterical, over generalizations about brands and vehicles. The fact is that virtually all vehicles today are far more reliable than was the case two decades ago, much less compared to earlier periods. And the actual risk of encountering a major reliability issue during the seven years, or so, that an average new car buyer keeps a vehicle is low. If I were purchasing a small pickup that I intended to drive for 25 years, it would probably be a Toyota. After all, Toyota pickups are the vehicle of choice for ISIS terrorists who subject their vehicles to far more abuse and neglect on the desert than I'm likely to subject a vehicle to. So when I buy a vehicle I take a look at potential trouble spots but there are other far more important priorities, especially when vehicle reliability evidence is on the whole so "unreliable." P.S. In response to "Trubatube," I don't own a Dodge Durango but I have a close friend who owns his third and reports virtually no issues in any of this vehicles. So much for personal anecdotes.

I am in the same boat as I really like it given this is the only plug-in hybrid van but reliability is a huge concern in addition to depreciation. FCA products do not command a high resale value period.

Was 2017 the first year of the hybrid version? Most car manufacturers will have issues with the first year of any new model car. Even second year. It's why you lease and not out right buy new cars. Especially in today's car market where cars are flooded with all kinds of tech. More things likely to go wrong. Even newer toyotas have been having issues where 10 year old models have not.

Flores William I’m not sure. Ours is not a hybrid but it is the fully featured model with the 20” wheels. It may be a first year run but my sister in-law has the first year run of the newest Honda Odyssey and she has ZERO issues.

azoreanblade2 yes but it’s the second gen of the penastar what came into in 2016. The car van and town and country only use the first gen pentastar regardless of year.

I have the 2018 Pacifica Hybrid and looking to go all electric now given that charging at home has spoiled us..don't like going to gas stations anymore. Wondering how my wife would settle into a Tesla Model X as it lacks a lot of conveniences of a minivan. And she would lose her favorite 360 top down camera view.

@@gregoryhwin Wait until nearer the end of the year to get a MX due to a refresh, unless you want free lifetime supercharging, which is available now. She'll love and be completely ruined by it, never able to drive a gasoline (or hybrid) vehicle again. There are not many inconveniences (especially with the X) but there are many advantages.

In Northern Canada the gas engine would run a lot in the winter for heat. In southern Ontario it runs most of the winter. But it still averages out to use less than half as much gas as my 2008 Dodge Caravan did.

keep the toyota until you have kids. by then, the new re-design sienna should be out and hopefully there will be a hybrid version.

When the electric exhaust, the car functions as hybrid, which means, it generates energy when breaking. Hope it helps

The hybrid just makes it more efficient, the engine won't recharge the battery to give you pure electric range, you'll just get hybrid fuel economy

I own a 2018. It isn’t at all difficult to keep it in EV mode so long as you’re easy on the accelerator pedal. The electric motors (120 hp combined) are enough for most driving. But in cold weather (below freezing), the engine comes on often for heat.

I've had mine for a month. Used zero gas so far. I hear that if you step in the accelerator, it can fire up the engine but I have not seen this yet. It also can fire it up to condition the engine and oil if needed or if is is really cold. I have not seen it do this yet either. I love this vehicle so far. As a dedicated toyota driver, I never thought I'd buy a Chrysler but i did. It's lux drives better than my old sienna and all in 100% EV mode.
