Cheap and cheerful has long been the reputation for Honda's smallest car in America and that continues in the latest incarnation. For 2019 Honda has continued their trend of moving their models up-market as well positioning the Fit as the "more premium" alternative in a way to the Nissan Versa Note or Ford Fiesta. Driving dynamics are still a win, although I don't think it's as engaging as Fits of yesteryear, and as always cargo practicality was high on the designer's agenda. The real question of course is: can it beat the Kia Soul? Let's find out.

The cargo hauling flexibility of the Fit is hard to express to someone who's never lived with one. It's really like a mini panel van. You can load things that would never fit in a full-size sedan or even a compact SUV.

Yeah, it's like a Tardis inside. Probably the most space efficient and fun little car. I miss my 2nd gen Fit Sport 5MT, but it's pretty sad for manual transmission enthusiasts to know that CVTs are now both faster AND more fuel efficient than driving stick.

Phrancis5 - Truly sad, as now I can't even count on my cheapness to justify ordering the stick ….
@Phrancis5
@Phrancis5 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was my justification too, but these days rowing the gears aren't even fun anymore if you're stuck in traffic a lot. CVTs can keep the engine in optimal torque range for the best acceleration and mpgs with infinite gear ratios and there's not even a millisecond needed to "switch gears". Self-driving cars are on the way and robots are gonna take our jobs, so get used to it! I've driven stick all my life, but gotta admit our new CRV with AWD turbo CVT and lots of active safety/driver aids is pretty nice. I still have an old Prelude SH where I can row the gears and fling it around corners when I want...

I owned a Fit about 10 years ago and absolutely loved it. I sold mine because I also had a truck that I use for weekend excursions and I didn't want to maintain 2 vehicles any longer. but I've regretted selling it ever since. As someone who likes a sporty driving experience, the Fit 'fit' my driving style perfectly. It really is a joy to drive. If you're looking for a commuter vehicle that offers excellent fuel economy, can fit anywhere and is fun to drive, you can't beat the Fit.

Cool! Trunk comfort is back! LOL! I appreciate you're one of the only reviewers that cover in depth the amount of space in the cargo area. I'm probably one of the few that could care less about infotainment and more about cargo capacity in a reasonably sized vehicle. Keep up the good work, Alex.

What a thorough and informative video. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! I'm interested in a Honda Fit but I like to really analyze things before deciding. Love how how you compare the fit to most other cars in its class! Been driving a 2010 Honda fit manual for 5 years now and still loving it! My two large dogs "fit" in the back with my camping gear... Might have pushed this poor fit a bit past its intended purpose off road but she brought us home safe :) I still get a kick out of driving it through the twisty roads banging it through all the gears :)

Big Honda Fit fan. I still have fun driving my 2008 Fit Sport manual. It's old enough that I can take it to Lowe's and load it like a clown car and not be worried about getting it too dirty or scratching it up. Yet still have fun tossing it through roundabouts and curves.

Great review! I drive a '17 Fit and one thing I've always found amusing is the hilariously ambitious 140 mph speedometer. Other than that I find the Fit to be a perfect city driving car and a great cargo hauler. 99% of my driving is stop and go urban 30-35 mph driving and with the CVT I average 34 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway.

Shantelle this is obviously a year late, but this is a great 1st car. But I would HIGHLY recommend getting the previous years to save yourself a ton of money for not that much different cars. Any of the previous models are equally as good and good luck. You may want to look at a comparison of the 2013 honda fit and the 2015 honda fit. The 2nd generation fits were beautiful , but the newer ones after them had more bells and whistles. In the end, up you and you wond't go wrong with whomever you pick.

I own a 2017 Honda Fit w/ the CVT. I live in a large city with heavy traffic. We average around 31.5 mpg with the majority of that being city driving. The "magic seat" is amazing, and we've been impressed at the odd shaped and large items we've been able to squeeze in. The lanewatch camera is amazing, and I use it all the time. What we don't like -- the seat comfort is merely OK. The engine is noisy when accelerating uphill, even with a reasonably light foot. The model year I have does not have a volume knob, and limited wiper speeds (just low, medium, high). The CVT seems a little touchy from a (near) dead stop, like a 4-way stop; it takes a little practice to avoid a slight jerk as you accelerate. Overall, I love it as a excellent city car, but I wish that Honda would produce a more luxurious sub-compact car for us city dwellers, one with significantly more sound insulation, a more refined engine note, auto up/down on all four windows, automatic climate control, etc.

@readyplayer2
@readyplayer2 5 жыл бұрын
Hank Hill No problem! I’d take them both for a test drive and see what you think. I’ve found the Fit to be reliable, very easy to park in the city, gets good but not hybrid / Prius level fuel economy on regular, and the magic seat and Lanewatch camera are awesome. But I’m sure the Hyundai has its own advantages and trade offs.

I love the sport trim in black with tinted windows too. My unrealistic dream is for an Si trim with the 1.5T from the civic lineup, a nice dual clutch transmission and the HFP sport suspension. It would be mad but still a perfectly logical purchase. Something I would buy in a heartbeat if it wasn't too overpriced.

I like your reviews Alex you go more in depth compared to other reviewers on youtube I've watched, especially when comparing to competitor models you not only look at the direct competitors but also hybrids, electric cars which is a nice touch. Is there a chance you would do a review on the Honda Civic Hatchback? I know you like the Ford Fiesta ST a lot but at $30K in Canada, the Honda Civic Hatchback LX which is the base manual transmission model for the Civic Hatchback already has a 175 HP 1.5L turbo engine at around $23-24K, I am curious what your thoughts are on the 2019 Civic. Even just a brief reply on your thoughts would be nice.

Although I"m looking at possibly trading my 2015 Camry LE for a 2020 model this was a "great" comprehensive review that much is still applicable today. I've driven 2018 Soul+ for a week from Hertz in Tampa. I traded a 86 Ford Tempo Sport for a 91 Honda Civic DX hatchback 5sp Great car. I've been comparing my old 91 Civic specs to 2020 Fit. Amazing the Civic DX had only 92hp/89ft-lb engine but felt lively. I'll test drive a Fit EX and a Soul 2.0. based on really thorough review. Thank you. Happy 4th of July.

Hi, I tested one of these which was advertised from a dealer but although i liked it even with the CVT i didn’t like the way it steered like as though the castor is set too much as it wants to centre itself back too quickly into the straight ahead position and although it handles well this feeling spoils it If you know what i mean.? I wonder if the 1.3 model with the standard tyres feels better or is there a tweak to fix the sport out there to make it feel better in this dept?
@No-xr7vx
@No-xr7vx 2 жыл бұрын
@@gtibruce It definitely took some getting used to. It does feel like it centers too liberally and the brakes honestly felt like mashed potatoes to me, to the point that I took it to the dealership to have them make sure the breaking was that smooth but spongy on purpose. It's been a year now and I haven't had any problems with it at all, and you definitely get used to the feel of it. The paddle shifters are fun but easy to accidentally pull if you steer all over the wheel like I do (and I wish there was a way to disable them entirely if not in the Sport mode, a tad bizarre that you can tap the things at any moment accidentally and start switching gears while going 100 down the highway). Not sure about improving/modding this Sport variant though, I'm not too much of a gear head and so am empty in that dept.

I don't think it's as rare as it was a couple of years ago. 2018 Accord is a good example, as Honda-Sensing is standard across the line there, and Toyota has been pushing TSS-P as standard feature on more and more models, starting with Corolla (e.g. SE MT6). Subaru, apparently, isn't interested in offering EyeSight with manual, which is why I'm never buying their cars again.

Thanks for showing the rear hatch area with the seats down and telling us cargo capacity with the seats folded. And for dispensing with the roller bags. However, you should have shown it without you sitting in it. I owned a 2015 Fit and found it a very competent sub-compact. My only complaints were crashy ride over road imperfections, small gas tank and not particularly tight turning radius. Otherwise, it was a fine car and had, by far, the best cargo capacity of any small car I've seen thanks to those magic seats. Yes, the Soul has more cubic feet, but it feels like a substantially bigger car.

Kia Soul with a 160 horsepower engine, and 6 speed automatic transmission is probably the most practical choice in vehicles of this type. It has descent power, a good warranty, and a real automatic transmission. For several years, the power train has proven itself in the Soul and the base model Hyundai Tuscon. The other vehicles in this class are generally best used for inner city driving. The Soul - with the right engine - can be used for both city and highway.

Nice review. Except for changing the seat height, with you in it, power seat adjustments seem awfully silly to me. It takes almost no effort to slide the seat forward- backward, and almost no effort to move the seat-back angle. Why anyone would want an electric motor to help them do this, is beyond me. While the rear seatbacks fold nearly flat, and give lots of room for cargo, the floor of the cargo area is made of some pretty thin cardboard material that flexes under a moderately heavy load. Seems like it could even bend, fold, and crease. The weight of the load is supported by 1. the nice strong sheetmetal under the compact spare tire, 2. the tire itself, 3. a piece of styrene foam sitting on top of the tire, and 4. A piece of cardboard sitting right on top of the styrene foam. A rigid plywood or plastic load floor (like the plastic floor in the Matrix) that is NOT supported by a spare tire and a piece of styrene foam, would have been MUCH better. Get better tires and you will get shorter braking distance and better handling. The manual transmission is really nice but the gear ratios seem too close together.

I have a 2015 FiT stick, and I believe, unscientifically, that I can get better MPG than I would with a CVT. I drive about 28.5 miles from Westchester county, north of NYC, to JFK airport for my commute. I have gotten 50 MPG by actively engaging the gear box. I do this with safe driving as my basic premise. I use no dangerous "hyper miling" tactics like coasting through gas station plazas. I play the gears, the brakes, the gas pedal and the hills such that I can maximize my MPG. The 50 MPG has been just a few trips, and it involves significant attention to my driving effort. I do not doubt that under test conditions, the EPA determines that the CVT bests the manual transmission. However, I believe an engaged driver can beat the CVT with a manual if the driver is diligent. My experience with MPG success with the FiT stick speaks to the fact or, rather, my opinion, that drivers are not as attentive to the driving experience in an automatic car. In driving a manual, I am more concerned about keeping a safe distance between me and the cars in front and behind me too. In general, I get 45 MPG on my commute to work. My stick shift fanaticism will end when we are all driving EV's!

can't do because the CVT automatically does all u r doing with the manual--e.g. it coasts down hills in neutral when u have foot off accelerator.

I wish the back seats can be easily removed and that the cargo mats behind the rear seats can be at the same level as the floor after the rear seats are gone (along with that useless foam and the spare tire). I will then convert the front seats to be swivel-able and make this little car into a stealth camper.

Would love to see Honda make the Fit into the Fit Si. 160 to 170 hp's would be sweet.

Just checked Kia Rio recently and sat in its back seat. I found it hands down one of the most cramped and uncomfortable not only in its class but almost any car below compact class. Honda Fit on the other hand may seem a bit tighter from outside, but inside, I find it's rear seat one of the most comfortable and accommodating. I don't how and why Alex finds Kia Rio's rear seat better than Fit? Seems more like a personal bias rather than honest commentary.

I've always admired the Fits with a manual transmission. I'd consider this or a Corolla hatch manual transmission if I was in the market :)

Having owned the first generation Fit for many years, and now with a Kia Soul Plus since 2016, Alex's comments are dead on. The Soul is the overall better call by a considerable margin, particularly with the respect to the interior, but the Fit was a bit more fun to drive--like a go-kart at the theme parks. Too bad the MPG for both vehicles are worse than many larger and more comfortable vehicles like the Civic. I'd choose a base Civic over a top-end Fit every time.

I bought a CPO Fit to tool around in after an errant driver totaled my KC2. My single biggest complaint...those Firestone low rolling resistance tyres. They are not much for overall grip in the dry. I suppose they contribute to the 42-45 mpg I am getting, so I will deal with it! :-)

To me, the Fit and the Civic are two hatchbacks that are most attractive (not visually - IMO of course, but practicality, handling, and reliability). Honda makes good cars. The other ones I've thought about were the Mazda 3 or the VW golf but they're both a bit less reliable and more expensive to maintain.

Is the direct injection or multiple port injection for the engine ? Only direct injection is a hassle to keep the intake valve clean.

What is the engine RPM at 65 and 70 mph, with 'eco' on and off with the CVT? Does the display give you a total MPG reading (not just present or 'on the fly') as well? Thanks.

I bought one in the UK back at the end of 2018. All was well for just over 4 years. It was an okay drive. Nothing special . Bit noisy at 70 MPH (112kmh). Infotainment system was just about passable. Fuel economy was okay, and it's party trick is that it's quite spacious, with the magic seats. But at just over 4 years old, then my low pressure fuel pump went wrong. In the USA they had a recall for I'm pretty sure the same model as my one . However Honda UK seems to apparently think that my car was not affected by the major batch of faulty Denso fuel pumps. So I've got a £1200 bill spread over a few garage visits whilst the fault was trying to be found. It's really easy to find that there was a massive recall of 700,000 Honda vehicles around the age of my one about Denso low pressure fuel pump failures, but somehow I magically never got one of those, but my fuel pump has gone wrong. Honda UK are being really useless. I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy another Honda car or motorcycle EVER EVER EVER again. Things go wrong sometimes, but Honda UKs abysmal response to me has meant I can never ever trust Honda again.

Nice review - however, you explicitly say the CVT will get it from 0-60 faster than the manual - while pretty much every other reviews states the opposite. 8.7 seconds for the manual, 10 seconds for the CVT. Perhaps the only way I can imagine the CVT to be faster than 10 seconds, might be if you'd use the paddle shifters to rev it up as high as possible before shifting to the next 'gear'. I'm curious what you'd have to say about this subject.

Actually, there's a specific method for maximizing acceleration in the CVT Fit. One has to pump the accelerator and not just floor it. Something in the ECU triggers enhanced engine performance to allow the vehicle to get into the 8's for the CVT, while just flooring it will be a second or two slower.

@@oldtwinsna8347 Thanks for the tip ! So, the pumping entails pushing the gas pedal in a staggered fashion until fully floored or something with a quick interval per push ?

I used to have Fits from 2 of the prior generations........both with manual transmissions. They were superb and served me well. Very pleased. I wanted to buy a new 2020 Fit, and there are TONs of Fits with CVTs all over the place, but not a single 6MT in a 500 mile radius of where I am. 500 miles radius and not a SINGLE one ! When Honda states that the LX/Sport comes "standard" with a 6MT, it is a pure scam......they just don't produce them with the 6MT at all, while scamming the public that the lower trims come standard with the 6MT.

In my opinion, hard plastic armrests are unacceptable. I should at least have one comfortable place to rest my arm. But other than that, the Honda Fit actually has nice materials. Even the hard plastics feel nice. But still, they should used the same material as the soft touch material on the dashboard on the door armrest.
