The 2019 Passport is Honda's idea of a perfect balance of on-road drive-ability with off-road capability. It's a new vehicle to the lineup but it still shares most of its DNA with the nearly identical Honda Pilot. It's only a 2 row version and not nearly as long, with extra ground clearance that gives it a bit more capability when going off road. If off-roading isn't your thing, don't worry because this still makes for a great family vehicle offering comfort and practicality. This 2019 Honda Passport Sport is the base model, but the high-end Elite gets pretty pricey. Let me know what you think of the new Honda Passport 2019!

I've owned a Passport Touring model for two months. So far, I have only used it for normal driving, not off-road. I bought it for its larger, roomier size coming from mt Acura Cl-S. Also, at nearly 74 years old, I sense a need for the "nanny features", line maintenance, sensing cars in adjoining lanes, etc. I really need the much better visibility of the Passport. I take one or two trips a year which often takes me off the beaten path, but not up the Jeep trails. I used to do these in a now gone GMC van, and the Passport doubles for that use as well. My Acura got about 10% better mileage, but it also liked premium gas. The cost of operating the Passport on regular gar nearly offsets its lesser mileage. Finally, the Honda dealer I use (not the first time), is fairly straight forward, whereas the Acura dealer basically makes the service department a white collar crime scene.

Very appealing vehicle. So many people state that a third row is a must have. For me, the two row crossovers offer all the room and utility I need. That Honda 3.5 is a smooth operator as well. 😉

So the difference between the sport and the EX-L is close to 7k. I do not think that paying 7k just for leather seats and some other interior upgrades is enough. You basically get the same engine and AWD drive system across all the trims. This is the best bang for your buck car.

I'm very attracted to the size of the Passport. At 190" long it falls into a "tweener" category (188"-192") between compact SUV's (an average of 181" or so) and larger midsize SUV's (197"- 204"). The category includes the Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Edge, Kia Sorento, Subaru Outback, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Nissan Murano in addition to the Passport and some others. Most offer V6 engines as standard or optional and all but the Sorento are five passenger vehicles with total cargo space of 65 to 78 cubic feet. And if you want to hang a bike rack on the back extending the length by up to two feet, the shorter length compared to the larger midsize alternatives is an advantage in terms of fitting the rig into a crowded garage and closing the door. All in all it's an attractive alternatives for many SUV shoppers. As far as losing a third row of seats compared to the Pilot and other larger SUV's, that wasn't a big deal for our family (2 adults, a teenage daughter, and a big dog) when we purchased a new SUV last year. The Passport wasn't yet available but we looked seriously at several two and three row SUV's. Eventually it came down to the KIA Sorento and the Ford Edge. The KIA had several advantages over the Edge for us and one was the surprisingly accommodating third row for an extra passenger or two. We keep it stowed about 90% of the time (giving us up to 73 cubic feet of total cargo space, identical to the Edge) but it's very convenient when we're chauffeuring a gaggle of teenage girls around town or need to accommodate more than five passengers and the alternative is taking two vehicles. If one never needs a third row, the Passport is a strong contender in the segment. The engine is durable and offers good performance and Honda's version of SH-AWD is probably the best of the lot. In trying to distinguish the Passport from the Pilot I think Honda could have tried a bit harder to give it a more "rugged" vibe. I wouldn't be surprised to see an "adventure" version come along next year. But few consumers in this segment are serious off-roaders and for its intended mission, the Passport is appealing.

I loooove Honda. The only thing I would suggest is improve seating comfort in all your vehicles, along with quality on all around. Over the years I have noticed a big dip in quality to save $.

I’m a Honda fan 💯. One thing I can say about Honda is that you can always see and feel the quality in their vehicles. The exterior styling can improve a little bit more. I’m baffled with why this suv sits between the CR-V and Pilot 🤔. They should’ve made it a suv that sits on its own platform. Great review as always Nolan 💯

Do you have any conception of the design, engineering, and production costs of a vehicle "that sits on its own platform"? There's a reason that virtually every major manufacturer has invested billions in developing corporate wide platforms for a wide variety of vehicles.

@@MoNoK15 Seriously? Volkswagen, Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Nissan, Mazda, and FCA are all moving to shared platforms for their vehicles and that's just off the top of my head. They don't do so because they lack imagination; they do so for cost savings and efficiency. And have you looked at the sales of vehicles like the Sequoia, Armada, and Expedition? The Expedition led the pack with 65,000 units sold in the US in 2018. The rest had far fewer sales in the US and few outside the US where such US "midsize" SUV's are considered large and large body-on-frame SUV's are rare.

That infotainment system looks like one from early 2000s, no blind spot monitor and rear traffic alert is a deal breaker for me.

I know media isn't the point of a utility vehicle, but come on Honda and all manufacturers. You really have to troll with the base cheap looking media units? LOL I'd rather not have a head unit at all which might help the car age well at least. Anyways, cool car overall and nice review.

While the base model isn't horrible, I imagine most people will skip this model. Although they didn't skip on simple amenities, you can still feel the cheapness. I'm surprised to see the electronic shifter in this model, I would've sworn they would've went with a traditional shifter here.

My Honda Passport Sport just shows the time in the display monitor. How do I change it so I can see the radio station that is currently on? I've tried everything and can't figure it out. Thanks!

Is the radio on? If you hit the radio button I would think it should show up. Not sure why it’s not. You might be able to find someone with a detailed video of the screen setup...sorry!

The base model wheels look better than the wheels on the other trim levels. SMH. You can get these black wheels on the EXL but it will set you back about two thousand dollars.

Another great review Nolan. Unfortunately, the vehicle is far from great IMO. Honda’s just don’t do it for me anymore. The Pilot looks like a minivan, so what does Honda do? They shrink it, slap a Passport badge on it and think it looks rugged. 🤦🏻‍♂️ The overall design is bland, the electronic shift is a joke in other Honda’s and plain stupid in a supposedly ‘sporty, rugged’ vehicle. No adjustable lumbar adjustment is inexcusable in a vehicle with this price tag, and the gauge cluster is probably one of the worst I’ve seen in a while. Honda skimped on a lot of small details and equipment on this trim. I agree with you that the storage compartments in these are great. Overall, It’s sad because Honda really could have made the Passport into a formidable 4 Runner competitor, but this is just another Pilot for people who don’t want a 3rd row seat.

I've seen more exciting displays on vacuum cleaners. I would assume (once) It being a Honda that the dash display will be reliable , long lasting and not cause problems to your wallet. But It just screams generic cheap and boring. I'm not into a bunch of animated monkey business running past you on the screen. I think its more the layout with the two semi circular analog looking gauges and the box in between. Theres just blandness and nothing attractive about it. Literally , the Display on my current production Yamaha R1 Motorcycle makes this display look like ancient technology ...
