I compare the new 2019 15.4" MacBook Pro 2.3GHz i9 with AMD Vega 20 4GB graphics and 32GB of DDR4 RAM with an external graphics card attached in terms of video editing using Adobe Premiere Pro and Blackmagic Davinci Resolve 16 and compare it to the 2019 i9 5K iMac 8 core processor, 64GB of DDR4 RAM, and AMD Radeon Vega 48 8GB graphics.
The codecs that are tested and compared are 4K h.264 footage from Sony cameras like the a7S2 and A7III as well as 8-bit h.265 footage and 10 bit 4K 60 HEVC h.265 codec from the Fujifilm X-T3 which is very difficult to edit in FCX.
Along with those I test stabilization, timeline smoothness and rendering, Canon Cinema RAW Lite from the C200 and RED .R3D RAW 4.5K from Red RAVEN.

Can’t begin to express my gratitude after hours and hours of watching your videos today and you answering question after question and even nuanced things and thoughts I didn’t even realize I had regarding: which Mac to buy, which cameras to buy, other gear, software performance, tips, just a ton of stuff to help me as a TD help my relatively large church finally jump start our video production ministry (outside of just live production of services) from the ground up. (Blackmagic is really seeming to take the cake on all fronts, price point, hardware AND software. Speaking of, curious which lens you use for your BMPCC4K!) Really, thank you, Max, for all your time and effort. I’m also personally really curious if you have any other ways of supporting you besides buying gear from the affiliate links? I also don’t know if you do any consult-type calls for donations or pay, but in my situation, you’ve already answered so many of my questions and steered me in the right direction to the point where just having that last ounce of reassurance and few questions answered would make all the difference. Either way, super appreciate you, subbed, and looking forward to more of your content in the future. 👍 Thanks again!!

I bought the BlackmagicDesign eGPU Pro and hooked it up to my 2017 MacBookPro 2.9, i7 with an Radeon Pro 560. Main usage and reason: to edit 4K up to 60fps BRAW Files from my BMPCC 4K in Davinci Resolve. What a huge disappointment it was. I send it back after 10 days and will now sell my MacBookPro and buy the 2019 iMac maxed out. Already got 64GB of Ram for it waiting on my shelf.....

I play World of Warcraft on a 4k display with my 2018 Vega 20 and using an EGPU Vega 64 gives noticeably better performance on the 4k display vs the v20. At max settings, the V20 struggles to get to 40FPS while the V64 EGPU sits at 60FPS 95% of the time. The display is connected to the EGPU.

Max - 2 questions if you could. I have a 2017 fully loaded MBP and your test with 4K footage w/ 2+ LUTS is most applicable for me I believe. 1.) Would the Core X be helpful with the right graphics card? (i assume the challenge here is vs the 2019 iMac) 2.) Do you have a recommendation for a graphics card that would allow 2 ... if not 3, monitors for external display? Many thanks,,

Are you using the internal laptop screen? That's cutting bandwidth in half - sending data to EGPU then back again. Would using an external monitor connected directly to the EGPU make any difference. Just a thought.

All of the results are using an external display actually. I ran a few of the video editing tests and the performance wasn't that much worst just having it plugged in, but the gaming benchmark resulted in about 25% lower score.

Great video. Question: would an eGPU be useful for either the MBP or the iMac for only running one or more external displays and not to run software? In other words, could we use the eGPU for our external displays and spare the native GPU of the work of running the external displays and free up ports on the MBP or iMac, while allowing the native GPU to run our software?

If I wanted to go back to laptop lugging again (stopped in 2013, been using an iMac since), I might want maximum portability... as in 13-inch Core i7 MacBook Pro. This is just me, but if I wanted to do video editing and other heavy-duty work, I would do that in the office while plugged into an eGPU and 4K or ultra-wide monitor. While on the road, I would be doing things like Microsoft Office, e-mail, web, etc., which would be require an eGPU.

So glad you made this video because I've been trying to troubleshoot my setup. I have a maxed out (i9) 2018 MBP and hit walls with my video editing. I needed a bump in performance. So I added Vega 56 e-gpu but the fans on the card haven't even come on once, yet I've experience no gains in performance. I've been trying to figure out why Final Cut just isn't working that card harder (or tell if the card is working at all). This is all very disappointing as I spent 6 months researching and a grand for this "upgrade"

Where I live there are not many options and was wondering if I can get an external SSD drive and run FCPX through that and how it the best way to do it? Do I have to make a bootable drive out of the SSD or can I just keep my media on the SSD and run FCPX with the external files stores there? Or DO I have to install a complete OSX to the drive and boot up from that drive? Also, are the Samsung T5 1 TB drive adequate to do it off an iMac? They are really really cheap, about 150.00 for the 1TB SSD drive. Thanks for any ideas or suggestions on the best way to do this. I mainly will be using FCPX, Premiere and Davinci Resolve for 4K prores footage from my BMPCC4K My options are the iMac 27 5K either with base model i5 6 core with pro 570X 4gb or the Pro 575X 4gb. Resolve timeline speed and exporting takes a performance hit when connected to a vega 64 egpu when using blackmagic raw footage compared to the internal Radeon 560 in a 2017 MBP using the latest resolve 16 beta. Very disappointing. Rendering effects (balance CC, NR, &sharpening) on a timeline(the red to blue bar on top) is faster with the egpu but non-optimized, non edited clips play choppy on the vega 64. They still need to optimize egpu use as the gpu is barely being utilized and doesn’t go above 300mhz when playing unrendered no effects, braw footage. SMH. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Hey John, The standard 5K (not iMac Pro) are actually a really good value for the money if you want to have a really nice display and the performance is quite good now, same thing for the resale value and it has MacOS. I think you really can't go wrong with the $2399 model or $3249 model depending on your budget and performance needs (add ram yourself though following this guide: bit.ly/RamUpgradeGuide ) If you don't care about MacOS and don't want that nice 5K screen (or care about upgradability, but not resale) You can go for a Puget system or Bizon.

@@MaksimYuryev Thanks MAX. Lastly, how about Mac Mini i7 6 core with eGPU.. I guess that too probably won't be as good as 5K iMac 2019. I do like the modularity though. One thing about iMac is that you can't reuse the display later after you've outgrown the iMac horsepower.

YES EGPU ARE GREAT once they become matured tech. If you are in a video editing app, each of those apps and each type of video codec treats processing differently. Some will be CPU dependent, some will use GPU. A mixed timeline can have even more variables. Don't expect miracles with any GPU. You still have to render background proxies. That's why Apple has created a special accelerator card for the Mac Pro.

Perfect - Just saved me wasting a grand. All I needed to know was whether after spending 4 grand on a 2019 macbook pro do I need to an eGPU to render 6K RED footage [Silvertstack in my case] and it appears no. I'll save the shekels and get a Nestor box and whack in a couple of AMD cards in that beast.

Thank you really much ! This video really helps me a lot ! What about screen on MacBook Pro : 8 bits and iMac : 10 bits ? Is it better for photography ?
@MaksimYuryev
@MaksimYuryev 5 жыл бұрын
The display quality is actually the same as far as color accuracy both P3 and 500 nits. I don't think the 5K is a true 10 bit just 8 bit dithered. Both are really good for photo editing.

Baseline CPU and Vega seems like enough for most people, I'd definitely get an eGPU for something like streaming but even then a 580 is probably enough for gaming/streaming at the same time. (If you can stream and game over thunderbolt, not sure how that works)
