Hear how our caravan went over the first twelve months of use. This video covers all of the replacements and fixes that were done under warranty. Some of the other issues that we experienced along the way. Towards the end of the video we show some of the things we added or changed to improve the setup.
Overall the caravan has been awesome and we love it! It was the perfect step up from a Jayco Hawk and it is perfect for our young family.
I hope you enjoy the video and please send through any questions or comments.

Shot on a Canon 6d and Go Pro Hero 5.

Great rundown Lewy. Not a bad list of issues. We’ve got the 17.53-3 after having a 2017 Expanda which we also liked. Some similar issues nothing major. Just removed the microwave for the same reasons. Love a good freecamp. Diesel heater is the best thing since sliced bread.

Oh nice. That van looks the goods. What are you using the microwave space for now that its out of the way? Couldn't agree more about the diesel heater. So toasty when you need it.

Awesome, we really like our caravan, it is great seeing how you got it setup, everyone does it different. We got a Nextgen from new and only 1 issue that I sorted myself. Glad you got yours nearly there, seems jayco needs more little ongoing fix's etc (why we did not buy one) but great prices to begin with. Personally twin axle is the go mate, I'd hate to get a blow out, especially with a family in the car, you keep it light but still, a risk I guess. We like our ensuite, we had planned to buy one like yours, but just went with the works and have not looked back especially with Covid etc in parks or even traveling we just use it instead of public. Keep living life mate!!

Thats awesome Kev. Totally agree with the dual axle thing. I feel like they would possibly hold their own weight a bit more as well. The ensuite would be a game changer! Enjoy the travels.

Thanks for your informative review with tips etc. We are looking at this model as we are just getting sick of all the bullshit associated with setting up our Jayco Eagle. We are getting to that point of not wanting to go away on our twice yearly trip to Gnaraloo, which we've been doing for over 30 years now! One major issue that has me concerned is the width of the main bed.Our Eagle is 1450 and the Journey is only 1380. I struggle to get comfy in our Eagle so not sure how I will cope with less width.I talked to the Jayco salesman in Perth about this and no chance of changing this in the build. We will not get the air con unit as will never use it ( $2600 less without) hoping this will also give us a bit more payload as well. I will query them on this when ordering to see if they can adjust the specs plate.No microwave either as will neve use. Will put space to better use. We see great value for money in this unit and understand there will be some issues. The best part of owning a Jayco is knowing they hold there value and are easy to sell. Thanks again for your inside knowledge. Look forward to more of your videos. Cheers, Steve and Karen Young Geraldton WA

Thanks for the feedback Steve and Karen. Yeah the bed is an interesting one, it's not huge. If there's a chance to see one in the flesh then do that for sure. Double check with your dealer re the air con. Since making the video we got in touch with the Canberra dealer and they said the air-conditioning is not optional, they won't build it without. It's a bit annoying.

Steve.. A long shot as its 3 years ago, however, did you end up buying a 15.48? We live in Gero and are keen to view one before driving to Perth to purchase second hand. Cheers.

Agree with ditching the microwave, we swapped it for a grey water tank. Pitty the aircon is now a standard in our Journey... would have swapped it for a heater.

Great round up mate. I think anyone getting into caravanning, regardless of brand, needs to have some level of awareness that things can and will go wrong and you absolutely need to be prepared to roll with the punches. It could be the difference between having a hiccup to your holiday vs having to abandon it. It is videos like yours which assist with getting a spare parts list together for things to have on hand (e.g tyre valve). With the exception of that brake cable, none of those issues you've listed concerns me too greatly. This is why you fall back on that warranty and Jayco are everywhere. Perhaps the only thing I would have liked some more detail on was the number of km's travelled, type of roads and how easy Jayco dealers where to deal with with warranty items. We pick up our new 2020 model Journey 15.48-6 OB in a month or so, very much looking forward to it. Options wise we went with the larger solar panel, extra water tank, hot water unit (no longer using Suburban) and external shower. Kinda kicking myself now we didn't get the bike rack, though we'll get something like a Grip Sport to go on the drawbar which will cost a bit more. Already had the microwave pegged as lasting a few trips before we remove it for the cupboard space, though found it interesting that you said you haven't used the A/C much at all. I've had some truly punishing nights in the tent due to those long hot nights, so being able to retreat to a caravan park on occasion to crank on the A/C is actually one of the things I'm quite looking forward to. Is it that you haven't found it effective in dropping the temp, or just haven't found yourselves out camping on those still 35c @ 11pm kinda nights? Last question, did you do anything with seal reinforcement? Have watched other channels around Jayco vans where they go to town with the silicone and rubber grommets to plug up all the holes they can coming into the van for plumbing and cabling. How have you found the van goes keeping the dust out when on the dustier roads? *Edit* Forgot one question. How have you managed with the 350kg van load capacity? You did mention you pack light anyway, just wondering if you think you struggled to keep the van within the weight limits with bikes and water tanks full, etc?

Thanks for the reply Dominic. I agree with everything you say. In answer to your questions, we have done a wide variety of roads. The worst dirt road being that 300km stint on the dirt to Menindee. A little bit of offraod sine then, one very corrugated road driving into Black Rocks Campground. At a guess we would have done around 6000kms in total since we have owned the van. Our Jayco dealer is Queanbeyan, and personally I think their service dept is understaffed, and extremely low on physical space to park and work on Caravans. They need a bigger yard. They are generally no questions asked, but can be long wait times. We used the air-conditioning for the few nights we were in Broken Hill and yes its awesome and cold. It is very noise though, particularly when it auto turns on and off. But most of the time we aren't in caravan parks. We blocked the door vent, amd put some gaffer tape around some of the plumbing holes etc in the floor, but all in all we got hardly any dust coming it. I was quite surprised, not even sure I needed to take those precautions. You chose great extras. We wish we had hot water and the external shower.
@dominic-ryan
@dominic-ryan 3 жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorsCBR Yeah, shower is key with my boys or they'd have the interior trashed pretty quick otherwise. We did look at the 17.58-3 for a bit, big step up in price and weight needing to be towed. We'll likely end up with a cassette based portable toilet like yourselves for rare time we are camping where there aren't at least drop loos. Think I'd just much rather keep all that sort of stuff well away from where we are sleeping and eating. Great feedback on the dust sealing and Jayco warranty experience. I have two Jayco dealers within an hours drive, so hopefully this can work in my favour. Thanks for the feedback on the A/C as well. What do you do to keep cool when off grid?

@elroybeauzec4155
@elroybeauzec4155 2 жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorsCBR I suspect the floor clearance would be the same. It's just a dual axle whereas the 15ft van is a single axle. The 17ft ensuite model looks like a great van. Good times, enjoy.

Just beaware that Deleting the A/C next time would be a bad move and affect resale value when selling. Why not invest in a Trailmate jack and ditch the factory jack. Hand sink pump sounds like it had air in the lines. I would havd thought in this day and age a 12v pump would have been included.if not allready done so Sirico fans fir air flow at night if needed.
@OutdoorsCBR
@OutdoorsCBR 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers for the info Mick. Turns out Jayco won't delete the air con anyway. Yeah have heard good things about those jacks, two birds with one stone. Yeah not sure about the water pump, definitely had air in it, just not sure what the solution was.
