KTM builds on the release of its new midsize LC8c parallel twin platform with the introduction of a new motorcycling Swiss army knife: the 2019 790 Adventure. Engineered for the rigors of, well, anything, this standard, non R-spec model is the more road-focused solutions in KTM’s middleweight adventure lineup.
--
The 2019 790 Adventure was initially developed along with the KTM's 790 Duke. It features a tweaked version of the 799cc powerplant, with a couple of enhancements, to give the engine more torque and added rideability at lower rpm.
Because it’s an adventure bike, the chassis and engine cooling system use heavy-duty componentry to ensure the 790 Adventure is capable of carrying both rider and passenger to their destination, wherever that may be.
For us, the destination is the Motorcyclist office in Southern California. Tag along with us in this review and share with us your thoughts on this midsize ADV bike in the comments section below.

KTM is doing so well selling bikes. Nice looking and great motors. I have owned a 2016 SD GT and my new 2018 SD 1290r. Both torque and horsepower. Truthfully 650-800 cc are the sweet spot for bikes. I love my SD but can never use all the power. Nice video. Love both 790’s. Perfect cc’s!

I'd say 600-850. This way we can cover the FZ09 and all the middleweight supersports as well as the slightly smaller displacement large dual sports. IMO, if they could make a fully-faired 475 pound or less wet, 5-6 gallon tank FZ09 with triple tree mounted pseudo clip ons (basically, a VFR800 competitor) and a 400 pound or less wet, 5-6 gallon tank, bike with a subframe that was directly in between an ADV and Enduro/dual sport, those would probably be the only two bikes I'd ever want.

Easy to up horsepower vs more costly to try and bring weight down.
@Drunken_Hamster
@Drunken_Hamster 5 жыл бұрын
@@Firestorm637 It's more than just power to weight ratio, though, as I'm sure you know. Hence why I never said whether the enduro-venture should be a single or twin cylinder. I'd also like to say that those are the MAXIMUM weights I'd be comfortable with. 25-50 pounds less would definitely be great, but, I don't see them getting much lighter than that without issue. And, to get down to that low of a weight with a subframe and bikini-fairing with windshield, I'm pretty sure the enduro-venture would HAVE to be a single at that point.

You mentioned (at 9:55) in your video that KTM acknowledged the oil leak issues in the 790Duke and fixed the issue in production. Leading me to believe that later produced 790s might be free of this problem. I actually plan to buy a 790 in the near future and would love to know when that production change occurred so that I can read the VIN and get a model produced after that production change. I don't suppose you have that information?

@lancealbon46
@lancealbon46 3 жыл бұрын
@@opusdei51 … hi. I went for the Honda Africa Twin. Got a 2019 DCT with low mileage. Both of those bikes you’re looking at are great. I’d probably choose the KTM over the BMW, but I do like both. Personally I think I should have gone for the KTM 390 Adventure and that is because of the weight. This African Twin is a heavy beast. I did the Akatarawa Forest Track with it (I posted a video) but dropped it 3 times because the clay was so slippery (I did not include the crashes in the uploaded video - haha), and that bike gets heavier after each drop. So the KTM 390 Adventure is lighter, and it will still hit 170 km/h which would get me into trouble. Long answer, but that’s just how I feel. I do love my Africa Twin but coming from road bikes to duel purpose adventure I just feel that I’m out of my league with it.
@opusdei51
@opusdei51 3 жыл бұрын
@@lancealbon46 thanks for that! I wasn't considering the 390 because I'm concerned about it's touring abilities e.g. vibrations, 'lack' of weight, potential quality issues being a budget bike from India. A mate had a small KTM made there and it was quite shocking what he had experienced. I have no experience in off-road riding and would rather stay away from difficult stuff. That is why I am even considering a standard f800gs, which is probably more of a comfortable travel bike that can go off-road to some extent. The 790 is lighter and has the 'feels light' ergonomics but is less comfortable and likely less reliable. I'll have a look at the 390. It could be an option with an easier learning curve in the rough stuff and as a commuter.

on every ADV bike made there are optional steel crash bars, I assume makers dont usually factory install them because it keeps the claimed weight down, plus they can charge extra for them. The original KTM 950 ADV had 2 low tanks, no big deal. most riders added crash bars.

“Rally” mode doesn’t come standard on the Street model. You have to request it be installed. This model also suffers from the KTM starting issues found on the 1190/1290 models - with it taking 3-5 times using the start switch to start the bike. This means, in the course of a typical riding day, you will use your starter between 18-30 times. My local KTM dealer has no solution for this except to say I should “re-map” the fuel management software, but they said they’ll have to charge me for this service. Haha. The fuel sender reports from the right side of the tank, and only past 1/2 level. This means that for the first mile after you start the bike you won’t get an accurate level report on the dash, and you don’t know you are using any fuel until it hits 1/2 tank. Kinda annoying and a lazy way to build this bike. 1st and 2nd gears are very short. Add this to the sponginess of the throttle with Anti-Wheelie mode engaged, and you have a good chance and falling over in a low-speed turn. I’ve never lugged an engine in 1st and 2nd gear on a motorcycle before, but I do it on this bike all the time. The turn signal controls are almost unusable to the point I consider it dangerous to the rider. The turn signal button is a spring-loaded switch that has to be sloooowwwwly used for the turn signals to turn on - otherwise the switch just springs back into zero position. Also, in regard to the turn signal switch, the very thin diameter handgrip makes it difficult to activate the turn signal switch if you have small hands. Lastly - THE HORN IS THE WORST HORN I’VE EVER HAD ON A MOTORCYCLE. Seriously, you can’t hear it at all once you get rolling.
@ulyssescale
@ulyssescale 4 жыл бұрын
All that being said - I consider all these issues to be solvable. I thoroughly enjoy riding my S model. Really, a beautiful bike to ride. Extremely comfortable and nimble. It is q-u-i-e-t with the stock exhaust. Gas mileage is really solid and riding on the highway is a blast. This thing is QUICK.

Multi has better ergos (for me), slightly cantered forward riding position, KTM too upright. Multi a bit more classy, KTM plasticky. I noticed how compared to this older video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNymqdxovL7aeps.html the camera here is so stable. Do you have the camera on your chin? How do you record your voice and not the wind noise? As an owner of an old Hero3 my videos tend to be shaky and inaudible :) It would be cool if you could do a video about recording our rides: your experience with camera angles, camera positions, some do's and don'ts. thanks!

Mirrors are very ugly... anyway an intersting bike. I don't like the poor aerodinamic protection and the footpegs fixed directly to the motor case (funny when you hit a rock in offroad). Least but not the least, the bike is quite overpriced for being without adjustable forks, IMO.

Time to help me... I own a 2018 R1200GSA and a F850GSA. Both bikes have gone on very long adventures -- on and off road. 1200 went from top to bottom of South America. F850 went from Miami to Thailand through Canada, Europe, Russia, a few I'stans, China, Laos.. F850 was a champ -- LOVE it for that trip which was only 30% off-road although on-road were crap roads. My next trip after the virus is to Africa. I'm actually thinking of going from Miami to Cape Town -- Yah; USA, Canada, Europe, Morocco -- through African continent -- ending in South Africa. Big deal with F850 is its weight... On road it is god... Off road, like the R1200 GSA, its a pig. I think Africa will be more off-road and dirty off road. So I'm thinking about the KTM 790 Adventure. I'm 5'9" so I need a lower setup. Ok, which bike would you take? F850GSA for luxury, comfort, ... or KTM with competent off-road and LIGHT weight savings of 100 lbs? Would love your input... The decision is important for me.

I don't and I'm a KTM owner. This is the confused bridge between the 690 Enduro and the 1090/1290, with nothing that makes it great at one thing. The only thing that these do in all honesty is give shorter riders another ADV option, which is something if you can't easily ride the 1290 or find the 690 too focused.

I don't like how wide that low gas tank is, it looks terrible and looks like it'll totally get in the way of legs, not to mention dropping it or bumping a boulder and losing all fuel or going up in flames. But then again if this is purely a commuter bike to compete with a Duke then maybe might be fine.

The ugliest bike race has a new competitor! For years BMW 's big GS with asymmetric headlight, beak and random frame tubes etc took first place, Ducati took first with its series of Multistradas, more beaks! KTM has never been the best looking, and orange is getting old- but this headlight deserves first place in the ugliest wars. It brings KTM a win! I love this bike, if I ever get one the headlight will be for sale asap. A nice round light on the forks will be installed. KTM mirrors are no winners either, my SMT has a pair of basic Japanese mirrors from a Suzuki Bandit. The gaitors on the mirror stalks break, but cover screws that tighten the ball joint. Double take mirrors work nice on my offroad KTM. I prefer no windshield for less turbulence, this wind shield will be gone with the fugly headlight. the weird notches in the windshield are there to enable clearance for the handle bars guards on full lock turns. 21 in' wheels can handle fine on the street, they have done so for years. The problem comes when the 21 inch wheel has knobby tires, modern dp tires such as Avon excels at are great on sporty street riding.
