2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport 2.0 litre Leaking Water Pump Replacement

This 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport TD4 HSE has been back to the workshop. Since we recently serviced it we found that the external water pump was leaking excessive coolant and that the customer had been regularly topping up the coolant.
We access and replace the water pump with a brand new genuine part and talk specifically about what to remove and successfully carry out this repair. We also talk about the functions of the water pump and what other electrical items are used to regulate vehicle engine temperature.
This turned out to be a straight forward repair and it something that I would encourage anyone to do themselves.

The 3 wires connector is the coolant pump position sensor connector and the 2 wire connector is for the coolant pump variable soleniod connector

Topix has the pulley bolts torque at 25nm and the pump bolts at 12nm. 👍

Thanks for that - very interesting. My 2017 Discovery Sport loses coolant very slowly ( I have added about 0.5L in the last two years). My garage says they can't find a leak but I can usually smell antifreeze when the engine is hot. I might take that wheel arch cover off and take a look around the pump when the weather warms up.

You’re more than welcome. Please do have a look. You shouldn’t need to regularly top up the coolant on any vehicle. It’s a sealed system so will be going somewhere. I am surprised that this water pump for such a relatively new vehicle failed so maybe this may be a common fault? If you can smell coolant when the engine is warm, open the bonnet with it running coolant burning off will create quite a visible smoke and then hopefully you can trace it back to the source. I recently had a water pump replaced and now the car won’t get up to temperature. Is it possible if the variable water pump is always full open that the engine never gets hot? 🤔

Would you happen to know how many miles the discovery was at? I believe I have the same problem but using dye to confirm it is the water pump. Thanks.

Yes, shockingly was repaired at 45,000 miles. They seem to be quite common and these engines are also used in some Jaguars too with the same problem. Easier to see in the Jaguars but with the Land Rovers, to confirm the leak, you’ll need to access the pump through the drivers front wheel arch. Thanks for getting in touch 👍

Great video matey, could I ask at what mileage this water pump failed at and the cost for a replacement from JLR?

Thank you for the positive feedback. So the mileage that was recorded at the time of repair was just over 40,000 miles but I do know it had been slowly leaking for a while prior to that. I don’t know what JLR would charge would be total but the water pump itself was close to £200 itself. Then main dealer hourly rates on top would really bump it up. The problem seems to be though that there is on average 4-6 week wait list for any repairs.
