I just ordered a new 2020 carbon Santa cruz 5010 27.5+ with carbon reserve wheels. I have ridden and demoed so many bikes in the past 6 months but none feel as good or as playful as the 5010. It handles the climbs good as well as the downhill and tight turns. I am 5’11 and ride a large so I think if you rode a large you would not feel like it was as sketchy on the steep stuff. Great review man.

Great vid. IMHO, by adding what you thought it was good at, and what you though it was a bit iffy on, is very helpful to those that aren't wrapped up in the jargon. i.e not the fastest, and feels less stable on the steep, and maybe a large would help some. Excellent. The girls was a very nice touch.

Cool... just watching this video again as the trails are too wet to ride here in Oregon. This video is rather epic -- you got to ride with Luca Shaw and on a bike setup by the trials and Cirque de Soleil magician Lance Trappe. It's amazing that you were able to focus on the bike... and only went OTB once.

Thanks man, I'm In south eastern Missouri and have zero access to demos. I was considering the bronson or the 5010 built up with a 140, like you suggested. I was worried about being overbiked 90 percent of the time on the bronson. And on the flip side wanted to travel to bentonville a few times a year and ride some of the drops and jumps there. Aside from that most of the stuff here is rocky, rooty xc type trails. Seems like your vote is 5010.

The 130mm was boosted to 140mm swapping airshaft he said its the way it should have come right off the bat. I usually ride strictly trails but i wanna dip my toes into a bike park i never been to one. Any tips? Is the 140/130mm travel enough? Note i don't do huge jumps or drops don't really plan to i like to stay planted and do the rock gardens etc.

Right on thanks for the reply! Which one would you buy to ride mostly KT with a little burke mtn mixed in? I like the flickability and agility of the 5010 but am wondering if the 29ers speed would be better overall for these trails? Which is the funner bike to ride? I think that might be most important factor. I plan on going to the bike shop to hear their opinions I just thought id ask you seeing as how you have rode these trails and the 5010. Thanks again man!

sdm07120 you also need a bike that climbs well and the Ripley just crushes the 5010 in that dept. I still need to ride the new HT but I don’t think it will come close to the Ripley in climbing.

We seem to be pretty similar body types... I am 5’10 190 (not fat I lift weights). I have a size M Hightower LT but have always wondered if I should have gotten size large. It sounds like you are also in between sizes. What are your thoughts on medium v large?
@jctrails
@jctrails 5 жыл бұрын
303MTB I hate being in between sizes. So here is my rule of thumb: most 27.5 bikes I ride a large. With the smaller wheels the bike does not feel as big even though the measurements of the frame might be. With 29 wheels it's a little harder to choose. With short travel 29's I might size up to a large w/ a 40mm stem , once again the bike does not feel as big. With a LT 29 I might go to a medium depending on brand and type of riding. If I was racing Enduro or gravity oriented riding, large all day. I want a roomy cockpit. When I rode the SC HT LT in PHX it was a size large and it felt a little big on the chunky climbs but I think I could use to it. Hope this helps.
@Cartsp70
@Cartsp70 5 жыл бұрын
303MTB , I’d say If you’re a Medium on the SANTA Cruz website ....... GET LARGE 👍🏽 ,SC bikes are small imo I have the N4 in a large and I’m 5”11” it’s still on the small side but it’s ok 👍🏽

I find it odd when people wonder if a bike can ‘handle’ something. This thing has over 5 inches of travel! 😂 if I ever looked at a jump or section on a trail n thought ‘fuck that’ I can guarantee an extra 10mm of travel wouldn’t help. people with no skill thinking they ‘NEED’ 170mm ‘enduro’ bike to ride around Surrey hills bike because Richie rude races one crack me up. Have you rode the newer Bronson? Just had a demo day with Santa Cruz here in Chattanooga, TN and loved the Bronson, but the 5010 is a little cheaper... 1 degree less slack and 130/130 suspension vs 160/150 on the Bronson.

MTB Trail Rider I haven’t ridden the new Bronson yet, but from what I heard it’s a big bike. Do your trails require that much bike? The 5010 is so much fun to ride and you lose the playfulness when you add all that travel.
@MTBTrailRider
@MTBTrailRider 5 жыл бұрын
JC TRAILS my local trails don’t need that much travel to be honest. I’m currently riding a hard tail with 100mm front travel. But here in Chattanooga we got a huge downhill bike park being built on signal mountain - construction and build should take about a year... 🤞🏼 based on what I’ve heard, the Bronson would be ideal for that bike park but your 5010 looks to be handling that park pretty nicely... hard to make the decision
