2019 Toyota RAV4 looks very different from the model it replaces, but that is just the beginning. Sharp looks resemble those of US Toyota models - the Highlander and the 4Runner. I also see a bit of Jeep Cherokee. By the way, the Cherokee is only marginally larger, than the RAV4. The 2019 Toyota RAV4 is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), which allows among others better packaging of the hybrid powertrain. And the hybrid powertrain in the new Toyota RAV4 is supposed to be more refined, and more efficient.
Starting price: 30 000 euro
As tested: ~46 000 euro

Reviewers go on about the time the hatch closes, why stand at the back waiting? It closes so what. I don't find this a problem.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 5 жыл бұрын
Before I walk away from the car I want to make sure it's properly closed and locked. There is no close&lock option, so I would have to walk away (in ten seconds I can be inside my house), and then lock the car via remote. And hope it reaches. In ten seconds a cat can jump inside, a child can stick its fingers under the lid, whatever. 10 seconds it's just a long, long time.
@tectorama
@tectorama 2 ай бұрын
I agree, no problem at all. Imagine if the hatch came down faster and people were injured. There would be dozens of people trying to sue Toyota. Ours also came with the side steps, no problem with those either. In Europe the 2020 models come with Android auto and Apple car play. The navigation also accepts voice commands, but isn't that easy to use unless you have the exact location you want to get to. In the UK all Rav4's come as hybrids with AWD, plus a plug in option. Expect around 50mpg (Imperial gallons) if driven with a light foot.

Its simple. A brand new car has no history, how you care for it will shape the car. A second hand car is basically a gamble on how its been treated in the past. You have no idea if the previous person treated the car very badly and decided they they were a mechanic overnight and put twice as much oil as it needed etc.

Your review seems to be presented in a manner that shows some dislike for the vehicle, and the Toyota design team. I do love your brutally honest review. First review of about ten I have seen that mentions some of its faults and issues (Some done with great humor). Overall, I think this is a great vehicle, and hope some of the issues are fixed next year. Hope to see a review of the Toyota Prius Prime.

Nice video as always by Marek. Toyota Hybrid have no CVT, but a planetary gear which is even better. It can`t break, so to speak. I especially like the new RAV Hybrid with the all-wheel drive option. I've been driving the CHR Hybrid for a few months now and I'm very excited. When it was cold I had about 5 to 6 liters and currently about 4 l on average consumption. For single trips I came to 3,1liters. Toyota keep what they promise.

Just test drove Rav 4 Hybrid XLE I own a Rav 4 2016 and the hybrid is much quicker. I tested the gas version 2019 and was turned off over the constant shifting from the 8 speed and the engine noise with the lack of under hood insulation. Our next purchase will be the Hybrid Rav 4 when Toyota includes Android which hopefully will be the 2020 model year.

I'm waiting for the FL. I hope it'll have Android Auto, a better instrument cluster and a safety feature for the electric trunk. I did a test drive with the 4X2 Hybrid and it's great. I also like the bulky design very much, though I understand why some people don't like it. The engines and the transmission work very good together and the fuel economy is simply awesome. This is the best SUV on the market (for my personal needs).

No other (non plug-in) SUV is a tax efficient as this for company car drivers, not even the excellent Honda CR-V hybrid. If you think the boot is slow.. try a Mitsubishi Outlander!! I test drove rav4 with this mirror - really unpleasant experience. To me it was eye focus issue - when you look ahead, your eyes focus somewhere far. With standard mirror the eyes also focus far (just through the mirror). You drop a quick look, check what's behind. This happens real quick - 1 second maybe Now when the screen is on - the eyes are focusing to a close object - a small screen that is few cm from you. It takes 1-3 seconds to switch, and then re-focus back on the road ahead (another 1-2 seconds. I did not like this at all.

We have the 4th gen version and agree with your thoughts on the mpg and compromised boot size. It’s rare to get 50 uk mpg but typically 44. The engine is a bit noisy when accelerating but being older people we don’t do speedy overtaking as it would be a little risky and need careful planning. Comfort is good but handling is not great on bendy roads. I really don’t like the new rav looks with the square wheel arches and prefer the Honda CR-V.

I am guessing the rear hatch is so slow is due to a safety concern. someone may be near the hatch like a small child or someone not paying attention and the hatch speed gives time to get out of the way. I saw other SUVs that seem to have the same slow hatch opening and closing.

The infotainment 'why not use bigger buttons and write on them rather than above them?'. I think that is a really good question! The climate control is really chunky and easy to use, maybe even with freezing cold hands so why not make the infotainment easier to hit on the move? The only thing I could think was that Toyota build cars to theoretically last a long time so maybe they thought the words would fade from the buttons of they were pressed a lot over 150,000 miles+ if they were printed onto them.... but then the buttons on the steering wheel have graphics printed onto them.....

You have a point. Toyota in the US has Android Auto, Alexa and Apple Car play on all their latest cars...here in EU it handles slowly the required licencing. On the other hand the new Corolla (former Auris) has Android Auto and Apple CP from the get go, I was looking into the new RAV4 and when I asked, Toyota said that the hardware is ready for Android Auto but not activated and when the licencing is done Toyota will offer free retrofit (to what ever requires it) or update to activated. So technically you could get a RAV4 now and when Toyota will get the licence you could go to a dealer and they would enable it for free. PS: You should ask your dealer and contact Toyota to make sure you won't pay a thing, some dealer are sketchy.

It is a shame the 2019 Lexus NX300h (a RAV4 in a party dress) didn't adapt the Gen5 power plant. Gen4's less than stellar performance, while the Gen5 power plant has been out in every fricking Camry hybrid all last year!!!! Lexus you coulda had me back, ya blew it.

Great review, Love your humor, (non slip floor mat :-), But - ordinary sat-nav, with no apple or android car play?? Am I supposed to stick a Garmin/Tom Tom onto the dash/screen for the next 4 years or so? For me, this could be a deal breaker as one of the big reasons I wanted to upgrade was so as NOT have to have this setup. If this is a software licencing issue with Android and Apple (read saving £), then in my view, this current situation will not serve them well. After all, how many Apple/Android licences could they have paid for, just from the profit they would have made from the car they will now not be selling me? Seems very shortsighted to me. All other details were acceptable to me, including the price.

AFAIK they added Android Auto to some cars retroactively, but you'd have to check VIN with the dealer to verify, whether a particular car can be upgraded or not. Also with the new system launched in Lexus NX, Toyota bZ4x and Subaru Solterra there are some issues with Android Auto. For now it's not wireless, and has some connection issues. Long story short - it should work right out of the box.

That's if they just printed the word menu on the button. However Toyota printed words under a transparent panel. Why not make larger buttons with transparent panels on top? If it makes the car too expensive, perhaps they should rethink their strategy. Infotainment is increasingly important, especially with cars going semi-autonomous.

Carwow - I didn't notice any brake noise (maybe it's his test car), at 15:10 he says it's pretty quiet, there's just a little tire and wind noise. He claims C5 Aircross was quiet, whereas mine was really loud at motorway speeds. The next 4 are US spec non-hybrid, so pretty much irrelevant, BUT: The Straight Pipes are referring to acceleration sound, and then they say the cabin is quiet. Steve Hammes is also referring to engine noise under hard acceleration. Tom Voelk also doesn't like the engine sound under hard acceleration. Consumer Reviews also complain about the engine sound under acceleration. To me it sounds pretty much like any other car with CVT, when you floor it.

Marek Drives unfortunately, you’re right. These new Direct Injection engines run rough. In North America, at least, the Rav4 gets an Aisin 8-speed with the non-hybrid 2.5L, instead of a CVT. Those are mostly Canadian-built cars. They are also missing the hood blanket, as insulation, on those models. They may have cheapened out in sound insulation there. The hybrids are all made in Japan and still have the blankets.

1. The button on the inside of tailgate is to close the tailgate and to adjust the opening height. 2. The button on the outside of the tailgate is unlocks the car, and opens the tailgate. I'm not sure about locking. 3. The button on the key fob opens the tailgate, but in order to use it you first need to unlock the car, for example with another button on the key fob. It's a minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nonetheless, especially with the amount of time the tailgate on this car takes to open and close.

Was getting excited for electric and hybrid vehicles but they still aren't built well enough for the general public. There's no used market for this hybrid. @@dannyzdenek2125 Just to clarify: I meant tarmac steep hills up and down. With some cargo in the car - the usual camping scenario. A lot of engine breaking, starts up hills etc. The mountains in Japan are a reliability challenge for both engine and transmission. When you mentioned CVT it got me thinking - these belts and pulleys do not like hills ;) Then I checked the design and, so far, I cannot find any actual belt and pulleys like in belt type CVT. They are mentioned by name but I cannot see them in the cross sections. It might be just normal marketing BS :) There are clutches inside of the torque converter. There are planetary gears like in normal AT. No usual CVT looking "thing". Let me know if there is some detailed info about it. I like Mazda, A LOT. NA Petrol only - hate DPF and mechanics ;) Already driven CX-3 in Norway, winter, above arctic cycle. Amazing vehicle.

Depends on what you compare it to. Off the top of my head I can't think of many that are as useless as this one (maybe SsangYong, and Lexus of course), but if you look at Hyundai/KIA they will have much better infotainment systems. Also, at the time of filming Toyota didn't offer Apple Carplay or Android Auto. They are gradually upgrading the infotainment systems in their new cars. Some may also be retrofitted. Also I recently reviewed the face lifted C-HR with the same infotainment system, and some of the issues I mentioned here have been addressed. To sum up: at the time of filming this was crap. If you buy a new car now, it may be less bad.

Nit picking for no reason, much like most other reviewers. Does anyone review cars without saying negative things about them ? When I go to a showroom and look at a car its because I like the car. As a buyer im not going to say to the salesperson "I want to buy this car but I dont like the sat nav or the dashboard material or the seat position or the ride quality" . Who does that ? Nobody, so why point out problems with a car that are simply not there ? You dont buy a car you dont like !
